It was like a college bar that tried to save fancy food. There was poor food and service.
There was 5 in our party. 3 people ordered steaks and they were all way over cooked. Also the crab cakes were over cooked. The vegetables were also burnt for the fajitas.
Service was poor, only got refills once. There were people standing everywhere and it was so loud you couldn't have a conversation with anyone.
Once the band started playing they literally asked up from our table before we were done. Totally unacceptable. Worst restaurant experience I've had in a while.
Again, wish I could do half stars - 3.5 leaning towards a 4 - based on ambiance.
I have gone here over the years, mostly to catch live music - I have a few friends in the biz so when they play here, I try and check it out. Â Great ambiance - if you're looking for a date night, you could also walk to Chic's Beach and have a stroll on the beach as well. Â It's a small venue but has a lot of outdoor seating as well.
Pros: always had great service, food has always been tasty which for "bar" food, is a plus. Â Great place to see acoustic and live bands. Â Great bar that also offers top shelf items like Patron.
Cons: the last time I went, for a bachelorette party, the place smelled like vomit. Â I realize that can happen because people are not too bright, but it smelled like it was still on the floor. Â It can get very crowded as it's very small inside. Â The bathroom only has one stall so you're waiting a bit if you're female... and this could be a chore depending on how bad you gotta go when you're competing with drunks for the throne. Â On one visit, the waitress snapped at me because I paid a pricey sum for a specialty drink and it was way too strong and I gave it a friend of mine (he was way over drinking age). Â She said that was a bad thing to do and I should've told her so she could fix it. Â I'm not a "fixer" when it comes to food or anything else I put into my body. Â I don't want someone spitting in it to seek retribution so I am not a big complainer like that. Â I was taken aback by that as if I did something wrong. Â Still not sure what the big deal was - I didn't pass it off to a teenager. Â I passed it off to someone who can handle a strong drink. Â And it was ONE drink. Â Not several and he wasn't loaded already. Lastly, their all you can eat crab leg nights - you better take off work early and get there around 5. Â If you wait, they say it's a 1.5 hour wait. Â So, I haven't been able to take advantage of the offer like I want to as I'm not waiting 1.5 hours for anything :) I could go catch 'em faster.
So anyway, we go from time to time because I grew up at Chic's Beach so it's a good spot for drinks and food. Â So, it's worthy of 3.5 but just a couple of negative experiences have me concerned. Â I'll keep going though and update this if anything changes.
HK on the Bay is a great little spot near Chix Beach that has live entertainment and great weekly specials. I came here on a Thursday night with my sisters and my dad. My dad called to make a reservation and when we arrived our table had been set-up and had a cute little photo frame that said "Welcome Larry's Party". That was such a nice personal touch and really made my dad happy. (Us daughter always have lunch with our mom during the week, but since he works, he can't join us. So this was a special get-together for us and that made it all the more special).
That night they had a special which let you pick the type of steak you wanted for $1 an oz. That is a great deal. You could add extras, like sauteed onions, mushrooms, etc. You get to choose two sides too. The steaks were all cooked to order and came out as requested.
I've been here several times before and have tried their Monday all you can eat wing night, steak nachos, chicken quesadilla, fish & chips, and the fish tacos. I've never been disappointed.
The only downfall is the parking. Very limited and difficult lot to get through when there are large vehicles there.
