It was like a college bar that tried to save fancy food. There was poor food and service.
There was 5 in our party. 3 people ordered steaks and they were all way over cooked. Also the crab cakes were over cooked. The vegetables were also burnt for the fajitas.
Service was poor, only got refills once. There were people standing everywhere and it was so loud you couldn't have a conversation with anyone.
Once the band started playing they literally asked up from our table before we were done. Totally unacceptable. Worst restaurant experience I've had in a while.
Again, wish I could do half stars - 3.5 leaning towards a 4 - based on ambiance.
I have gone here over the years, mostly to catch live music - I have a few friends in the biz so when they play here, I try and check it out. Â Great ambiance - if you're looking for a date night, you could also walk to Chic's Beach and have a stroll on the beach as well. Â It's a small venue but has a lot of outdoor seating as well.
Pros: always had great service, food has always been tasty which for "bar" food, is a plus. Â Great place to see acoustic and live bands. Â Great bar that also offers top shelf items like Patron.
Cons: the last time I went, for a bachelorette party, the place smelled like vomit. Â I realize that can happen because people are not too bright, but it smelled like it was still on the floor. Â It can get very crowded as it's very small inside. Â The bathroom only has one stall so you're waiting a bit if you're female... and this could be a chore depending on how bad you gotta go when you're competing with drunks for the throne. Â On one visit, the waitress snapped at me because I paid a pricey sum for a specialty drink and it was way too strong and I gave it a friend of mine (he was way over drinking age). Â She said that was a bad thing to do and I should've told her so she could fix it. Â I'm not a "fixer" when it comes to food or anything else I put into my body. Â I don't want someone spitting in it to seek retribution so I am not a big complainer like that. Â I was taken aback by that as if I did something wrong. Â Still not sure what the big deal was - I didn't pass it off to a teenager. Â I passed it off to someone who can handle a strong drink. Â And it was ONE drink. Â Not several and he wasn't loaded already. Lastly, their all you can eat crab leg nights - you better take off work early and get there around 5. Â If you wait, they say it's a 1.5 hour wait. Â So, I haven't been able to take advantage of the offer like I want to as I'm not waiting 1.5 hours for anything :) I could go catch 'em faster.
So anyway, we go from time to time because I grew up at Chic's Beach so it's a good spot for drinks and food. Â So, it's worthy of 3.5 but just a couple of negative experiences have me concerned. Â I'll keep going though and update this if anything changes.
HK on the Bay is a great little spot near Chix Beach that has live entertainment and great weekly specials. I came here on a Thursday night with my sisters and my dad. My dad called to make a reservation and when we arrived our table had been set-up and had a cute little photo frame that said "Welcome Larry's Party". That was such a nice personal touch and really made my dad happy. (Us daughter always have lunch with our mom during the week, but since he works, he can't join us. So this was a special get-together for us and that made it all the more special).
That night they had a special which let you pick the type of steak you wanted for $1 an oz. That is a great deal. You could add extras, like sauteed onions, mushrooms, etc. You get to choose two sides too. The steaks were all cooked to order and came out as requested.
I've been here several times before and have tried their Monday all you can eat wing night, steak nachos, chicken quesadilla, fish & chips, and the fish tacos. I've never been disappointed.
The only downfall is the parking. Very limited and difficult lot to get through when there are large vehicles there.
My first impression was that I loved the ambiance and look of the restaurant. I also like the selection of beers. That's the main reason I've tried to give it a fair shot and gone there twice. And I have to say, the food is very dissapointing. Even something like spring rolls they turn into this cheesy fried mess. Even if bar food is your thing, it's not even good for bar food. Sorry HK..I really tried to like you! :(
Review Source:I had high hopes for this resturant. The atmosphere was lively and fun. But I was soon disappointed. After being told it would be a 15minute wait 3 parties were seated ahead of me forcing me to wait well over an hour. I was looking forward to some great seafood, the ocean was minutes away after all. The menu lacked any seafood as a main dish, this "seafood" Resturant mostly just offer side dishes of shrimp at $1 per shrimp. Putting all the bad signs aside I ordered a steak and potato with a side of green beans. Minutes after ordering I was informed I couldn't get the steak I wanted with a baked potato, confused I switched my steak to a sirloin topped with "seafood" and toasted almonds (I had wanted seafood all along after all.) Â when the food came out the Resturant was so dark I couldn't tell what kinda of seafood was atop my steak. After eating a few bites I thought the taste was very odd, after a fair amount of squinting I was able to make out what the seafood was... It was imitation crab meat!!! Â I was floored, a real seafood Resturant wouldn't even allow that stuff on their property. To make matters worse the sides were not very good either. All things considered a very bad experience. My advice is to stay away.
Review Source:I do not exaggerate when I proclaim that the seafood nachos at HK on the Bay are nothing short of a miracle. Quick! The genius who dared combine seafood and nachos must be beatified immediately. What other miracles has this saint performed? Have lame children been made to walk?
Future generations will sing the legend of these seafood nachos. Epic poems will be recited from mountain tops praising their delectability. Civilizations will rise and conquer for a mere taste of these nachos. And HK on the Bay will be the new Mecca, the new Jerusalem: a cheesy, crunchy, salty, spicy, holy land.
So it is with absolute earnestness that I offer you this word of warning: one taste of HK on the Bay's seafood nachos will leave you forever changed. When you've tasted perfection, you can never return to what you once knew. Some, it is rumored, never eat again.
Look deep within yourself. Be certain that you are prepared.
My first time at HK on Saturday (cinco de mayo) and we stayed outside the whole time and played cornhole (we did have our own server outside on the deck so that was nice). It's got a very locals/divey vibe. Drinks are simple. We wanted a blue agave nectar margarita (Skinnygirl anyone?), but they only had neon green sour mix margaritas, which is kind of a pet peeve. Some of the food I tried to order they were out of and their menus were not updated, other than that, it's a chill spot with decent food. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to return.
Review Source:We had a pretty fair meal here...the mojitos were delicious, and they have good drinks at pretty reasonable prices. Â Taylor, our waitress, was really cool and the crab dip was really savory, served with a warm French baguette). Â We sat out on the porch at the end of the summer, after Memorial Day, when it was more quiet than it would have been otherwise, and enjoyed the company of friends and family in a quiet, off-the-beaten track area.
Review Source:Four of us went to dinner at HK on the Bay last night. It was a 25 min drive from Shadowlawn at the oceanfront, but well worth it! Everything was delicious, the service was excellent, and I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. Unfortunately we left before the band started, but they have live music on Fri & Sat nights.
The only negative we experienced at HK was the noise level- pretty loud. The 4 of us were constantly saying "huh??" and "what??!"... It wouldn't have been so bad with just 2 people, but it would definitely be hard for a large group of people to carry on a conversation. BUT the food was delicious & the menu was creative. I ordered the stuffed flounder (yum) and picked mashed potatoes & asparagus as my 2 sides. My husband got the stuffed chicken and really enjoyed it (even though he normally thinks chicken is "too boring" to order out). Our friends got some type of spicy shrimp appetizer and the seafood mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was sinfully good and served in a huge pot (enough for 2). It's very rich, but absolutely perfect if you're looking for comfort food and saying to hell w/ the calories :) The other entrees were much smaller portions- enough that we were full, but not stuffed and definitely not enough to take home for left overs.
I can't wait to go back and try more entrees (& dessert)!
This place is amazing. Â We were in Chicks beach this past weekend and wandered to HK on the Bay around 6 p.m. for some dinner. Â I had the sangria which was pretty good. 3 people split the seafood nachos which were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Â We all shared the tequila lime fajitas and the fish and chips (both very good). The icing on the cake was the dessert. Our waitress recommended the deep fried (in waffle batter) PB&J. It sounded weird but we went for it. Unbelievable. I can't wait to go back and get it again. I may even call the place to see if they will tell me how to make it. Â I will go there again next time we are out that way!!!!!
Review Source:Went here with my husband for a nice low key dinner and overall, not too bad. It was a little loud but our server (Jessica) was very nice and the food was good.
Here's the breakdown of the meal:
1 Crab Dip - $10 (Served with fresh warm baguette, VERY good)
1 Steak Grilled Burrito - $13
1 Shrimp Grilled Burrito - $13
1 Deep Fried PB & J - $8
With the grilled burritos you can choose shrimp, steak or chicken. I have to admit this is the only time I've ever been asked how I would like the steak in my burrito cooked. Definitely a plus. The burritos also come with two sides. I had the green beans sauteed in garlic butter and french fries. My husband had the broccoli sauteed in garlic butter and garlic mashed potatoes. Nothing really spectacular but a nice addition to the meal. The burritos were very good. The tortillas are made with sun ried tomatos and have a bit of tangy barbecue sauce on top which quite the delectable addition to the other flavers.
Which brings us to the dessert....I have to admit I was very skeptical and would not have ordered this is my husband hadn't said he wanted it. It was basically peanut butter and jelly inside waffle batter (think funnel cake tasting) with a side of vanilla ice cream. Looking at the description I would have thought I'd still be in a sugar coma...but it was actually good! It wasn't so sweet that I went in to shock, but there was no skimp on the flavor either. A yummy choice, even if there is absolutely nothihng calorically redeaming about it. But then again that should have been a foregone conclusion with the words "deep fried" in the name.
I would recommend this place. However, if it's warm enough out I was definitely recommend sitting outside. It's much more quiet than the interior and the food is worth it.
There is not much good to say about HK on the bay except that is located close to home.
The top four things I took away For HK On the Bay
4. Bottled Beer (Nothing on tap)
3. Bad Food -Over cooked/bland
2. Bad Service - thought about sending smoke singles to get drinks refilled!
1. HEARING LOSS! - So loud in there with chatter bouncing off of everything I couldn't hear myself think let alone talk to the people in my party.
This place might be a fun bar if you like $4+ bottled beer and no music. The food was so bad it is not worth the time to describe it other than BAD, OVERCOOKED, NO FLAVOR!
HK on the bay = BAD
My husband & I love this place. Â Noone we have brought to HK nor ourselves have ever been unhappy with the food or service. Â Fish tacos, stuffed chicken, seafood nachos, steak nachos, fries, ceaser salad, wings, tuna poki just to name most of the items we have tried! Â
HK has a nice atmosophere too. Â I would feel comfortable walking in in flip flops and a t-shirt or a dress. Prices are all very resonable too.
We have a 3 1/2 yr old who LOVES the kids mac & cheese & burger bits in it. Â It's so good & big that Mommy & Daddy usually have to help her out
with it!
Get there no later than 6:30pm on the weekend if you don't want to have to wait for seating. Â HK also has live music on Sat nights too but we are usually in and out by then.
HK also has diffferently nightly specials like all you can eat wings, all you can eat crab legs, etc.
I dont normally do bad reviews but I have to say I was not impressed. 1. It took for ever someone to see we were there. No sign that says seat your self. Then it took forever for them to take the order. Once the food came the App trio was good but WAY to salty. My main course was seafood mac and cheese. It was HUGE ( YES) but again WAY to salty. I have 2 more gift certs for the restaurant but after that I wont be back.
Review Source:I can see the appeal of this place to many of its patrons. It's located almost in a residential area, so it's kind of secluded and it seems like one of those hangouts that locals and regulars really enjoy knowing is there, precisely because tourists cannot find it easily. And you can tell that many of the people in there all know each other, staff and customers alike. So I will say that vibe was certainly good, and this always counts for something.
That said, I found that the bartender kept giving me an attitude for some unknown reason. She made our drinks, but they were not particularly strong. She seemed to loosen up a bit when she realized I was there with a good regular for his birthday party, but I still don't like being treated with an attitude until she "approved" of me. But they do have a cool outdoor area and I found myself hanging out there more than inside the place.
we found this restaurant by cross referencing the reviews on yelp with the restaurants on <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> - great find!
now were staying on the beach, not the bay, so this was a bit out of the way but we really like "local" places and this definitely had that vibe. we were there on a monday night so it was busy but not packed, we were able to get a table and happy hour ran until 8 pm so we made it just in time.
the menu has a lot of options and i liked that it was different than traditional vb beach establishments. i had the seafood macaroni and cheese and it was HUGE and my friend had the seafood pot pie - both were delicious and again, different. we never saw either item at any other restaurant.
i would definitely go back and with the <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> gift card it is a great affordable option.
I am giving HK a 4 star more for the atmosphere and the staff than I am for the food. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the food. I really like the steak nachos although I order them without the steak as they already have chili on them. I have not tried the seafood nachos but really, really want to. The crab legs are delicious but often slightly overcooked. The hush puppies are awesome. I thought the she-crab soup was a little thick but not bad.
Really, I enjoy stopping in and having a beer.
I have only been to HK in the evenings for live music. I've always had a good time. It's not very big and a lot of the tables are cleared away to make room for a stage area, so it can be hard to find seats. Every time I've been (usually on Friday/Saturday nights), there's been a good crowd. One of the other reviewers mentioned it's hard to find parking. That's true, you have to find somewhere on the street to park by the houses nearby.
It's an enjoyable place to spend an evening if you live in the area. I don't think it would be worth the drive out if you weren't already in the Shore Drive/Chick's Beach area. It's a great neighborhood hangout. Maybe dining there is more exciting. If I'm out that way for dinner, I'm going across the street to Zia Marie's though. I can't pass that up for HK.
Went to Hell's Kitchen On The Bay last night (Saturday) for the first time to see a couple of bands. The first issue I had with HK was the parking, because basically there was none. We had to park about four blocks away, which was the closest empty space we could find. When we got into HK the place was slam packed and it was extremely hot  (granted it was very hot outside). I couldn't stand anywhere without being in someones way. There were only two bartenders working so we had to wait in line for about 10 minutes before we could even get a drink. I wanted a cherry bomb but since it was $9, I passed and settled for a domestic bottle which was $4. I felt like everything in there was overpriced. With no where to sit or even stand my group decided to go outside since it was cooler outside than inside (and that's saying a lot). We left soon after.
Review Source:I love HK on the Bay for a nice dinner out. Â I've never had a bad meal here..and I've been several times. Â It's pretty small with about 5 tables outside and 10 inside...so you'll have to wait if you go at a busy time..but it's worth it. Â The service, food, and drinks here are top quality!
Review Source:The meatiest food I've ever had!
It was a weird day, and on weird days, I want weird food. We arrived at a restaurant. It looked deserted from the outside, but the inside was much more glamorous. At first there was no sign of intelligent life until a waiter came and greeted us. The waiters were very friendly and liked to talk, but that's how waiters are when there are only 3 more people in the bar. For a bar, Hell's Kitchen was very kid friendly (crayons, coloring sheets, etc.), but that doesn't matter. What matters is the food.
We got the Crab Soup, Steak Nachos, Fish and Chips, and Philly Cheese Steak. I'll start from best to worst, but first I'll say this. The natives of this strange bar DIDN'T seem to have poisoned our meal. It was fresh and good tasting food, like it should be. The Nachos were the best. They were covered in meat, cheese, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and mush more. It was very outlandish.
Next came the Cheese Steak. It looked like a futuristic version of a hot dog. It was delicious. It was served on a French bread bun that was covered with grilled beef, onions, peppers, cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
The Crab Soup was very sweet. It was almost too sweet. It was very good, but it wasn't that special.
Last, but not least, is the fish and chips. It was just normal cod fish served with fried potato slices.
Overall the restaurant was good. The inside was clean, although the outside was grungier than the nice inside. If you see this place, you have to come. It is a brilliant discovery!
I just got back from here a while ago. Good food, better value.
Especially since they're on <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a>, where you can buy a certificate for $25 (use a coupon code off <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fretailmenot.com&s=60f04326c50bdf5d35cf9bfdc7e95f54ba6b793d7b30d5b45b64692741515202" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://retailmenot.com</a>, to bring the cost down to $2). It requires you to spend at least $35 though, but that's more incentive to try more right?
Like the previous reviewer mentioned, the waitress was really good about repeating sides, without me asking or anything.
The restaurant sort of reminds me of Steinhilbers, not the food, just the location. While it's not hiding away in some hidden area, it's in a neighborhood with regular ol houses. Parking can be a problem, but I went on a saturday night. There wasn't a wait when I went, got the last table.
It's really dark in there, more than I care for, but it's super small and the bar takes up a good portion of the space. So expect it to be loud. Most of the light comes from the TV's they have around the restaurant.
We ordered the 10 wings ($7), tuna poke ($11), cold man's meal ($7), and the stuffed peppers.
The wings were good, they're no wing king, but better than buffalo wild wing. I just prefer really crispy wings.
Tuna poke, I've never had it before, and I should have brought my friend and family with me to gauge it, before they left back for Hawaii. But it was a really nice portion, and came with wasabi, pickled ginger, and a nice assortment of greens underneath. They were fresh. The tuna was already pretty salty, so I didn't use the soy sauce with it. This was my boyfriend's favorite item.
The cold man's meal came with chilli, sourdough grilled cheese, and fries. The fries aren't your normal fries, they're whole slices of potato, fried. I really liked them, like if chips were fat and fluffy on the inside. The grilled cheese was okay, better than say, Dourmar's, but nothing spectacular. Healthy amount of cheese, and chesseeeey.
The stuffed peppers had a sausage and rice filling, and topped with breadcrumbs and a spicy marinara sauce. It came with two sides; I picked mashed potatoes and asparagus. The mashed potatoes wasn't that attractive, but it tasted good. But again, not my preference, I prefer a lighter whipped, buttery type. My friend loved it though, he claims it was "the best mashed potatoes ever, they were amazing, did you get that? amazing". He also thinks hooters and applebees are amazing, FYI. The asparagus was huge, a bit greasy, and near the end of the stalk a bit chewy and hard to bite. Also, the rice was undercooked in my peppers. Quite a bit.
I sound like I'm putting it down a lot, but I'd go here again, especially with the coupon. Also I'm just super picky with my preferences in food.
Another note about the waitress. At first she brought out a bacon wrapped meatloaf with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I told her that it wasn't what I ordered, because I ordered asparagus and the stuffed peppers. She insisted that it was the peppers, they just look alike, and she'd bring out the asparagus for me. I'm pretty sure meatloaf and bell peppers can't look that much a like... She also brought out some crab dip for my boyfriend when he ordered the chilli. She came back shortly after the confusion and apologized. No biggie, I mean, it is super dark in there. Otherwise she was great. She would walk around making sure everyone's glasses were full and to see if anybody needed anything. Though a couple times me and my friend ran out of water, but that is more on our part because we are camels afraid that we're going to be stranded in the desert.
It has been a long time since I've had a good steak, and it seemed overdue. Â A little searching online led me to find HK on the Bay. Â It's a little seafood/steakhouse with a full bar (no beer on tap, though) that offers live music on weekends. Â
It's tucked in off the beaten path of Shore Drive not far from the CBBT (which we had to pass under to reach the place), but despite that it was absolutely packed.
A little more packed than you'd expect even for a Friday night - they had been hit by three parties of more than seven people each and weren't quite ready for it. Â We had to queue up in the entryway which would normally have been a comfortably large area for a restaurant of that size. Â The waitresses and hostesses encouraged us to feel free to visit the bar while we waited.
They have a happy hour, and we caught the tail end of it. Â All domestic beer $2... except for the two priciest domestics on their list. Â
The menu (available on their website) has a good variety of fish and meats, salads, sandwiches and appetizers. Â I wanted to try everything - it all sounded so good! - but I was there with a meal in mind.
I ordered the 11 ounce sirloin (the menu doesn't mention that entrees come with two sides or what sides are available, but they do) done medium, and my wife had a large apple salad. Â
The steak came out rare... but oh, so good on the edges. Â It took a while to get the waitress's attention (it was absolutely packed, so it's understandable), but when I did she whisked the steak away and had it grilled for a few minutes more. Â When it came back, it was perfect. Â I'm sure steak sauce was available if I had wanted... but why spoil such a good piece of steak? Â It was delicious on its own.
The waitress needs to be mentioned. Â She was so cheerful, helpful, friendly and prompt despite the crush of customers that I'm sure there must be a law against it somewhere. Â Our water glasses were no sooner drained than refilled, she checked back on us several times, and the only time I had difficulty getting her attention was when I realized that the steak wasn't quite as medium as I had first thought. Â She recited the sides for us several times without our asking, whenever it was appropriate and didn't make us feel bad for needing it when she was so clearly busy. Â
The selection of desserts is small. Â We shared a piece of the Kahlua Chocolate Fudge cake and the Kahlua Cheesecake over coffee (fresh - she went and put a fresh pot on for us). Â We agreed that while both were decadent and delicious we liked the Kahlua Cheesecake better.
The live music was scheduled to start at 9. Â We considered staying, but decided that we'd save that for another night. Â
Total bill for two (before tip) was around $35.
We will definitely be returning. Â What we had was delicious, and some of the other menu items (Seafood Pot Pie? Â Hawaiian Rib Eye?) sound too good to pass up.
Non-food items:
- There is no smoking inside. Â There is a wrap-around patio around the building with tables and a roof, and smoking may be permitted there (I'm not sure - the only person I saw smoking was standing up a little past the patio in the parking lot.)
- I'm not sure kid-friendly is the right word, but it's not kid-antagonistic. Â I didn't see a kid's menu or a high chair, but there were at least a few children in the waiting area.
- The parking lot is small. Â We had to find a space out in the neighborhood around it (and right near the bay, as it is, there weren't many places not marked "no parking").
- I saw one person picking up take-out. Â I somehow doubt that they deliver.
- There are TVs in there in most corners. Â For me, this comes close to counting against the place. Â The largest were behind the bar and tuned to sports - no sound, subtitles only.
