We were excited to try this place since we had seen it on tv and they did not disappoint. It is an out of the way gem. The vibes are good, the people friendly, service is incredibly fast and the food is fresh and super tasty. My only slight complaint would be the prices but the wouldn't stop me from coming back if I'm ever in Key West again.
Review Source:This was one of the highest rated sea food places near Key West according to Urbanspoon and apparently Yelp, that's unfortunate. Its not the hardest place to find but its next to a marina behind a neighborhood of double wide trailer homes, classy. The restaurant itself is clean and the staff were friendly but we can here to eat sea food and thats where things went wrong.
They seem to have a large selection of fried items which is fine but I prefer to eat grilled fish when fresh fish is this close to the restaurant. I picked the Stock Island mixed grill which had fresh fish, shrimp, scallop calamari and lobster. The fish was generally tasteless and didn't seem fresh. Everything was covered in some sort of cajun spice mix which wasn't mentioned in the menu. The lobster was chewy and over cooked. Generally the food was what I would expect from any run of the mill restaurant chain.
My wife had the lobster BLT with fried green tomatoes. It sounded good but I think it was worse than my mixed grill. What they don't tell you is that the lobster is battered and fried, making it impossible to tell you are eating lobster. The fried green tomatoes are on the sandwich along with bacon that taste like the cheapest cut's of store brand bacon they could find. She also tried the Conch chowder that contained few pieces of chewy tasteless meat in a tomato based soup. The chowder basically tasted like ketchup with added vinegar, horrible.
I think this place is ok if you are looking to hang out with your buddies and have some drinks, eat some fried stuff, have some chicken wings and hang out with the locals. If you are looking for a place for good sea food, you will be disappointed. Sorry Hogfish

Found this gem on our way back from key west this weekend. Â At first we passed it, but doubled back just to find it, and we were SO GLAD that we did. Â The service was great, from the friendly hostess to the smiling server. Â The ambiance was great, with funny signs on the walls, comfortable outdoor seating, and even the chickens roaming around the parking lot...all charming! Â But the best part was the FOOD. Â The menu had plenty of choices and included something for everyone. The lobster bisque was OUT OF THIS WORLD (best I've ever had...it even had big pieces of real lobster in it! The hostess assured me that it is consistently delicious). I will not make another trip to the keys unless a stop here is on the itinerary. Â Well worth the short drive off the beaten path!
Review Source:I didn't come for the food; I came for a drink to celebrate driving all the way down here! This place gets 4 stars for the whole 45 minutes I was there. You gotta take a couple lefts, a couple rights, circle through a trailer park then a marina and you'll find it! Go see Uncle Mike (the bartender) and order one of his famous island drinks that ONLY he can make. See the manatees and all the wall junk hung around the open dive. It's a typical Florida Keys joint, so relax!
Review Source:Getting to this place did make me and my bf question whether we were going the right was after we seen the trailer parks and what ever and Boy! did we look like tourist amid the local folks. Being from NY we were dressed normal to us but we definitely stood out.
However worry not everyone is in their own world and we had a great experience and our food came relatively quickly we ordered the hog fish and lobster tacos which were delicious!
Yes, I'm definitely a fan of this place. Â Every time we head down to Key West this is a must. Â Either before the trip or after. Â Its a great place to eat before you hit the road. Â A couple cold beers make the trip back a lot better. Â Not to many of course. Â The food is ok but the atmosphere makes up for any issue. Â It's a little on the pricey side but when I'm vacation I can drop $30 for a meal with some drinks. Â The food has always been hot and fresh. Â Local place that gets a lot of run through traffic. Â I recommend it.
Review Source:It's been a while since I ate here but I figured I would finish my review. My wife and I took a Caribbean cruise last year for our five year wedding anniversary and spent a few days down in Key West afterward. This place came recommended by some locals we ran into while we were there. It's just outside the main touristy area of key west and well hidden. We had a navigation system with us so we had no issue finding it but it's very out of the way.
The restaurant is very Key West. All the windows open fully to make you feel like you aren't even sitting inside a building. The food was excellent. They also have alligator tail, one of my all time favorites and something you rarely see on the west coast. Alligator tail is common in Florida but of all the places I had it while I was there, this was by far the best.
Love the ambiance in this place and the out of the way laid back feel. It was not loud and rowdy while we were there but we came mid-week. The restaurant is a good size and the parking lot is large from what I remember so maybe it gets real busy in the weekend but in my book, this place is good to go. I will definitely go out of my way to eat there if I am ever in the area again.
Such a disappointment! Made a special detour to visit this place due to the high rating on Yelp and I really wanted to like the food but I think it's way overrated.
Food: minus 1 star for price and minus 1 star for taste
Hogfish sandwich $16 - nothing special, kinda 'fishy', definitely overpriced.
Conch fritter $9 - very bland
Total $50 for 2 persons (excluding drinks)
Service: minus 1 start for lack of attentiveness (never comes by to refill even once)
The place looks like a really nice dive to hang out with your buddies over beer overlooking the bay, but other than that the food is quite forgettable
WILL NOT COME BACK - sorry
This place may be in a sketchy area but don't be scared away as its a true hidden gem. Only 5 minutes away from Key West, Hogfish Bar & Grill is a great alternative to the jacked up prices of Key West. The food is fresh, the outdoor seating is great and the menu is pretty darn expansive. All the members of my party were very satisfied and if I lived closer I'd surely come back more often to eat the delicious Hogfish.
My only gripe is that the service was a tad spotty as we had to hear about our waitress bowel movements which was awkward to say the least.
I wanted to like this place, I really wanted to have an awesome time here, but it was just ok.
Stopped in on my last day before hopping a flight back. The drive from Duval street seemed like forever and once we left we found out it was actually 5 minutes from the airport, DUH. And yes it is in a sketchy part of town just past the run down trailer park.
We sat out on the deck by the marina and I had the smoked fish dip while my friend had the ahi tuna tacos. The fish dip while tasty, had way too much mayo in it making it rather soupy and it was served with nacho chips which were definitely no bueno.
Friends tacos fared better, the fish was really good, but the toppings were mediocre with white lettuce, soggy tomatos and pickled jalapenos.
We both agreed we should have ordered the fresh fish specials.
WOuld I go back? Heck yes, if nothing else for some cold beers and hang with the locals. The servers were super nice here too.
Don't be skepticl about location because its definitely a creepy area BUT the food is good, fresh and views are lovely and calm.
App: coconut shrimp- awesome- tender and great coating with yummy chili sweet sauce on side
App: fried lobster with key lime sauce- lobster was okay- nothing crazy special. The sauce on the other hand was fabulous.
Famous hogfish sandwich- huge and delicious on Cuban bread. Eh hmmm yum.
Hogfish tacos were very good except I asked for no seasoning and sauce on it and the waitress screwed my order up. Other than that it would have been terrific.
Shrimps were great and fresh on the two other orders.
Off the beaten path for sure, but great food in that typical, laid back Florida way. Â The service was friendly, and the hogfish was outstanding. Â I'm not even sure what hogfish is, but I will be ordering it every time I see it on menus in the future. Â The conch chowder is another must have. Â Good for kids because, after all, you are pretty much eating outside!
Review Source:Returned to the Hogfish Grill remembering the great food they servers there. Â Fried hogfish taco, conch chowder and grouper cheeks was the fare for the lunch. Â All of the food was simply delicious and the wait staff from the friendly hostess to our personal waitress were terrific. Â We could use a Hogfish Grill on Cape Cod!
I would rate this place a 5, but there is one downside to the atmosphere; cigarette smoke. Â You would think it would not be a problem in such a large open air venue, but it is annoying.
I loved this place when I lived in the keys! It's always a place I would recommend to friends when they came to visit. My favorite thing on the menu was the tuna tacos. I would always get them rate and blackened. I have yet to find anything as good. If you don't like them spicy you can request they leave the jalapenos off. I liked mine spicy though. If you sit on the far side (right) you get a nice view of the marina and the sunset. This is a great place for people watching and getting a taste of Key West!
Review Source:My gentleman caller and I were excited to dine at Hogfish during our trip to Key West last weekend, and we left feeling very satisfied and glad we went. Â It's not cheap but it's plenty reasonable for Key West.
We tried to walk from Boyd's Campground and got lost in Trailer Park Land for a while before giving up and getting the car, so by the time we got there it was 9:30. Â We sat in the main dining area near the bar; everything was near the bar I think. Â To my slight annoyance there were two musicians playing, and the volume was turned up far beyond what I consider "pleasant to talk over," but whatever. Â Our waitress had a broken arm, poor dear, and was very fast and got our orders right and brought drinks quickly.
We went full hog(fish) and got an appetizer to start, splitting the Bahamian Conch Chowder. Â It was superbly creamy and fatty, maybe a little light on actual conch meat. Â
For entrees I opted for grilled hogfish with blackened scallops on rice with veggies. Â The hogfish was a little bland but cooked well with a great texture. Â The scallops were GODDAMNED PERFECT - I rarely ever order them at restaurants because there's always something wrong with them, but these were flawlessly soft yet substantial, with just the right blackened flavor. Â The veggies were Ye Olde steamed/buttered beans and asparagus and I didn't eat the rice but I'm sure it was fine. Â He got grouper with a mango salsa, which I loved and he just liked.
Dessert was OBVIOUSLY key lime pie, and it was very good - a little sweet which I like but my date prefers more tang and sourness. Â After dessert we watched some overweight feral cats beg from the outside tables and pet them. Â Mewwwww!
You know where the middle of nowhere is? Well go two blocks north of it and you will find Hogfish on your right hand side. Ha! I kid, it's not that bad but it is kind of out there.
Continuing a "see Key West like a local" tour by some friends, landed us here. I could tell this was not my typical kind of place but it looked fun (all except the dogs-more later). Tiki roof, picnic tables, outdoor seating, and live music.
We sat by the water and got lucky with perfect weather. It was in the low 70's!
This is what we ordered:
Baja Style Hogfish Tacos
Stock Island Mixed Grill
Grilled Hogfish Filet with Blackened Scallops
Everything was delicious. So fresh and full of flavor. They nailed it! They really did. I wanted to eat every last bite on my plate. I think the tacos were definitively the best out of everything we ordered. It's not that it was creative or that they used crazy ingredients and fused them together magically. It was just simple food, done right. Exceptionally right. I am adding this to my Key West rotating list. I think next time I will go for lunch instead so that I can appreciate the view more. Since it's on the outskirts I would recommend going before arriving to  Key West or as you leave.
Service was OK. My only big complaint was the amount of unleashed dogs walking all over the place.. I love animals (even dogs) but I am afraid of them. I just am. On this particular night, they seemed to know I was uncomfortable and kept "visiting" me. It was annoying to not be able to enjoy my meal in peace. This place is all outdoors so they must feel it's OK to allow it but it was not for me. That said, it's a big deal that I actually want to return despite this issue. I really enjoyed my meal that much. Can't wait until then...
Had a great dinner at the Hogfish. Was in town for a day playing the Tennessee Williams and went looking for some good local food. Man did I find it here. Took a cab from the hotel as I didn't have a car. It's a little out of the way but totally worth finding.
I had the conch ceviche which was amazing and very fresh. Next up was the fresh shrimp and let me tell you they were the best I have ever had. Had some hogfish too which also was top notch.
I'm sorry it was a quick stop through Key West or I would have gone back for sure.
Stop by and you won't be disappointed.
I loved the atmosphere here but the food was underwhelming. We went for dinner when we first arrived in Key West. We were feeling a little grimy and tired and didn't want to go to downtown Key West. Our concierge gave us a coupon to Hogfish so off we went.
There was a great live Blues band that quickly got us in the mood for vacation and relaxation. We had a beer and decided on splitting the Hogfish tacos. They were ok, absolutely nothing special at all. Maybe we didn't order the right thing but the beer and Blues kept us happy.
Visited Nov 20th with a group of 12 friends from MI on the way down to Key West. We have been doing an annual trip to Key West for a few years and always make 4-6 stops at restaurantsbars on the ride down. This was the first time we have stopped at Hogfish and it will def be one of our stops every year. Place had a great atmosphere with stiff drinks and the menu looked great. It just gave off the fun vibe like you would want when in the keys.. I have to admit we didnt eat but everything looked great and heard a lot of good chatter about the food. The crowd was very diverse and interesting!!! Bar is right on the water and has a great view. It's is difficult to find but worth the hunt!! Cant wait to go back next year!
Review Source:Over on stock island is this fun little place. Â Big outdoor tiki hut kind of lower key bar and food. Â Some tables along the docks but for the most part you are just looking at other people, so no great views. But heck it is on the edge of a marina at the back end of a trailer park, what do you want? Â
Menu is typical for this part of the keys.  The "speciality" of the house is the hog fish sandwich.  I got it blackened. Now here is the thing, they like to put cheese on these signature sandwiches.  But to me cheese and blackening do not go together as the cheese covers up the flavor of the spice, so I told them to hold the cheese and I'm really glad I did.  The sandwich was very good, well seasoned, flavorful and cooked perfectly.  There were also sauté mushrooms and onions on it which made an interesting switch.  The mushroom with the blackening spice and a bit of fish was very good.  I think the cheese would have wrecked this.  But again, there is this habit of putting cheese on fish sandwiches in florida that I will never understand. Â
We also ordered the fried calimarii.  Which was pretty standard but nicely done.  Squid was not over cooked and not overly battered so a plus.  But they also did something very cool that was a nice touch and I have to try.  They deep fried some pickled jalapeños and put them on top of the squid and this was great touch!  They should just serve these as a side. I'm so going to try making them when I get home!  The chowder of the day was also good.  Service was pleasant and reasonable.
This was our 1st Key West dinning experience. IT was a great choice; we went on a recommendation from a friend. The bar is very unique looking and has the staff feel for the staff. They were very friendly. You could tell that this place has it fair share of locals. The food was fresh and yummy. We sat out on the "patio" more like the dock, but it was fun to watch the fish. We also saw a manatee. The hogfish was very good white fish that was not fishy at all.
Yum!!
Loved this place. It is a little tricky to get to but once you do you'll love it.
Very laid back relaxed atmosphere. We went for a late lunch and the fishermen were arriving with there fresh catches. Â We opted for a table outside by the marina. We started with the fish dip and Coconut shrimp that were delish! For our meal we shared the Hogfish sandwich which comes with fries and the shrimp tacos which come with black beans and rice and chips. Both were outstanding. Definately will be back again!
We don't get out to the Hogfish on Stock Island all that often. Â Today though, as we finish up preparing for a month-long absence from Key West, we decided to take lunch there. Â It has never disappointed. Â It was busy with bikers in town for Poker Run, but we had no trouble getting a table on the dockside by the marina.
The hostess was very pleasant in seating us, as was the waitress who greeted us.
This place used to be Nobody Knows, a real shrimpers bar. Â When Bobby Mongelli took it over a few years ago, the menu, the facilities and the clientele quickly improved, and all continue to be good.
For lunch, the GumboLaya sounded good, but we were both in the mood for a bowl of hot chili, so that's what we ordered. Â I ordered a side of rice and beans, and Janet a side of cole slaw. Â
The rice and beans were excellent, fluffy yellow rice and Cuban beans served in separate dishes so the diner can make their own mixture to taste. Â The cole slaw, though OK, was a little too mild for my taste, lacking the tang that a bit more vinegar would have brought. Â I had forgotten that the HB chili is served a little on the soupy side, but the meat, onions and cheese were swimming in the broth and quite easy to eat with a fork.
Service was polite, friendly and attentive without, as some others have said, being intrusive. Â Our bill came to $23.98. Prices here are a little on the high side overall and for what we ate, but I said to Janet that I didn't mind paying higher prices for really good food, and that's what we had.
Hogfish is on our shortlist of good places to eat in the Key West area.
Recommended!
There are a few things you just know you have to have it when you are in Key West: scuba/snorkeling or just laying out on sandy beaches, get a nice and stiff Rum drink from any of the fine watering holes on Duval St., and seafood, particularly hogfish since they come in abundance in the Keys and the Gulf.
But just how exactly did I find this hideaway in the back corner of the Stock Island? To tell you the truth, I followed my idol Adam Richman over here. Have you seen that guy eat? He made the signature hogfish sandwich looked so delicious, I just have to drive a thousand miles to give it a try.
Boy, let me tell ya, I was not disappointed. The menu might tell you it's a "sandwich," but in reality, with giant slice of (blackened is what I got) hogfish, topped with grilled onion and mushrooms, smothered with melted Swiss, and the entire load held together with the local Cuban bread, it was the size of 6" sub. I was amazing. I almost couldn't finish my equally delicious Magic Hat #9 from the draft.
I came in on a night with live music, and the guy was entertaining; not really that much a singer, but the music was great.
If the sandwich overloaded you, take a walk along the water and dock, look some pretty boats. That's pretty much all there is to see in Stock Island, I'm afraid.
If you've ever watched a TV in Michigan, chances are you've seen a "Pure Michigan" commercial. Â You know, the ones that Tim Allen does because they made the last Toy Story movie, and his Buzz Lightyear pension isn't as much as he thought it was going to be.
What's the relevance here?
Hogfish is Pure Key West. Â This is what Jimmy Buffet is talking about, folks.
We stumbled upon a review for this place while mobile Yelping on our way out of Key West. Â I was sad. Â My time with Key West had come to an end, and my rice paper skin was not nearly burned enough for my liking. Â We were heading off into the sun for the Overseas Highway when we decided that the beer we had just had at 10:45 in the morning had made us hungry. Â We needed to refuel, stat. Â So, I pull out trusty iPhone, equipped with Yelp app, and I see this place. Â We decided to try it out. Â So I have iPhone try to direct us there via maps. Â That was fairly successful, but keep in mind, this place is definitely off the beaten path. Â
It's like a giant tiki hut, with a separate area towards the back. Â We had the choice of our picnic table, so we picked one that happened to have a decent breeze coming through. Â Yeah, this place isn't air conditioned, but you're at the Southernmost point in the US. Deal with it! Â It's right next to a marina and the ocean, so you have that awesome ocean air, and there couldn't be a better thing to do than sip a mojito and enjoy the air.
The mojitos here were one of the best ones I had on this entire trip. Â I had enough of the mint taste, and enough of a kick in the bum from the rum. Â I am a Cuban food fanatic, and the Cuban sandwich looked pretty legitimately Cuban-esque, so I ordered it. Â BF ordered the Hogfish sandwich, which is what they are known for. Â Both sandwiches were fantastic. Â Serious island grub here; I thought that my sandwich was great, but needed a little more mustard. Â The fish was FANTASTIC; it's obviously extremely fresh, and so good - you also get a ginormous hunk of it. Â For the prices, you get decent sized portions too.
We kind of just lingered here... it's one of those places that I think you just are meant to linger. Â We ordered another mojito, and the bill came. Â We paid it, and remained lingering, until we realized that the day before we only had one piece of Key Lime pie. Â That's seriously unacceptable. Â We decided to share a piece, and we looked for our server to order some. Â She just brought us a piece! Â After we finished, she talked with us for a few minutes and then we asked her for the second bill, and she said not to worry! Â I may add that this was true Key Lime pie; not "lime" pie, but this was seriously tart and creamy. Â I thought it was even better than the Key Lime pie outlet place we had went to the day before. Â
Definitely will be making it here again!
Overall the best food and experience we had in Key West. Â
This is THEE PLACE Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffet have written about in their classic songs. Â Its indoor/outdoor on a marina, everything about it is picture perfect key west, Caribbean, Â it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
The food was reasonably priced and all delicious. Â Its so nice to go somewhere with real cooking with real flavor.
The hog fish is very unique and delicious, the blackened preparations of anything are awesome, the pulled pork is melt in your mouth Cuban style, the blackened ahi tacos are something you've never had good. Â All the side dishes were well prepared, and the key lime pie was some of the better we had.
Its a no frills spot oozing with local color. Â I could hang here for an afternoon or evening with the drinks and great music anytime.
The "off the beaten path" are freaking hilarious, really 1 mile off the main road is off the beaten path?!?! Gimme a break!
This place was awesome from beginning to end. The food I had was great. The GIANT burger is perfectly done (I think its called the Valhalla Burger, but I could be wrong). I had the Conch Fritters as an appetizer, and they were great too.
Only problem: Don't trust Google Maps to get you here. Get the directions off the Hogfish Grill website. That's the only way we found it.
If you're wondering whether there's any way to escape Key West's mostly tourist-trappish restaurants, make the short drive to Mile 6, AKA Stock Island, AKA the first island on your way back to Miami.
The place looks like some unassuming casual bar & grill. Which is exactly what it is, but the seafood here is fresh and delicious, and there's no better place to watch the Keys go by over a beer and a plate of hogfish or snapper or....who are you kidding? Hogfish all the way. That's what the place is named after, if ya haven't noticed.
Everyone said we should try at least one "roadside seafood shack" in the Keys. We're lucky we picked this one.
