The pizza is pretty good thin crust pizza, but, in my opinion, its nothing exceptional. Â Of course, I think Gino's is the best ever, so my personal taste might not be the perfect metric for some people.
Home Slice Pizza is certainly a solid choice if you are downtown. Â The atmosphere of the place is laid back, especially the upstairs bar and open air patio/deck.
I wouldn't mind going here to start, or end, a night of drinking, all while eating a pretty good pie.
The defining characteristic of Homeslice pizza is it's thinness. To those who compare it to New York pizza I'd have to disagree. This isn't to say it is bad, on the contrary. It's just it's own category or style of pizza. ( midwest style? Toledo style?)
The basic Margherita  pizza is excellent as is their white pizza ( I had mine without sausage but it normally comes with it) The Potato pizza is also very popular but I haven't tried it. Â
Because the pizza is so thin you have to be careful not to go when you are super hungry or else you can end up eating an entire pizza. I like to eat a salad at home before I go so I'm not to famished.
Right off the bat, I have to tell you, this is the best Margherita Pizza I have ever had. If you don't know this kind of pizza is a standard in Italy and you could say is THE Pizza. Whatever, it tastes great!
In 1889, during a visit to Naples, Queen Margherita of Italy was served a pizza resembling the colors of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil). This kind of pizza has been named after the Queen as Pizza Margherita (from Wikipedia)
So, this pizza parlor is hard to find but we'll worth the effort. They have a
Moderately stocked bar upstairs, nothing fancy but comfortable at the bar with a few TVs for the best game. It is a nice place to grab a beer and have some great pizza pie. We got the Margherita Large and enjoyed it between two of us. People who are of average eating ability, I don't think this is enough to feed four people as the crust is thin, the way it should be. The flavor is incredible between the cheese and olive oil and slight amount of sauce. Thankfully, they don't ruin the wonderful crust by drowning it. I was very hungry so I ended up getting the cheese bread appetizer after and that was great too. Funny thing is that the appetizer cost about 1/3 of the price of the pizza but had about 80% of the amount of food.
If, no, when I go back, and I will be going back, I will start off with the appetizer then have the pizza too. I would think that would be plenty of food for three average guys. Maybe, Â enough for two couples. The price of the pizza was a tad expensive until I tasted it, but when we added the cheese sticks I thought the value was well worth it. I would highly recommend this place to all of my friends.
The bar is upstairs and would be hard to find unless you knew there was a bar there, just go in the front door and goto the back and you will see the stairs. They do have an outdoor patio but it was too cold for anyone to be out there, it didn't look too amazing but what bar patio is. The people hanging out at the patio make it, so take about a dozen of your most fun friends with you.
Overall, one of the finds of the year for me, I will be back.
Thank you Yelp for helping me find such a great place open, I would not have found it had I been on the block. Yelp saves the day again!
I finally checked out Home Slice. Â This is definitely some of the best pizza I have had in Toledo, and I eat a lot of pizza. Â They actually season the pizza so it's not just a bland mess of melted cheese and soggy bread like many pizza places in Toledo. Â We got a margherita and a bbq chicken. I seriously had to force myself to stop eating - it was that good.
Review Source:Home Slice is a great place to sit back and unwind after a long day. Â Not too fancy but very relaxing surroundings. Â The upstairs bar area has more action and people to interact with. Â Sometimes the music can be too loud but that should be anticipated for a bar.
Pizza and sandwiches are tasty and very hot when they come to the table. Â Yes, they can be greasy as mentioned by previous reviewers but it's pizza for cripes sake. Â They feature a cheese bread with feta that has become our favorite. Â Food and drink prices won't empty your wallet.
And a note to those reviewers who complain that it's not authentic New York style pizza: Get off your high horse and get over it! Â We're in Toledo. Â Or better yet, shut your mouth and go somewhere else!
By far the best pizza I've had in Toledo. Â Absolutely delicious. Â This is as close to New York Style pizza as you're going to get outside the over-hyped metropolis. Â If anything, "New York Style Pizza" shouldn't be taken literally, as we're not in New York. Â I think most people with an I.Q. over 95 understand the connotation of that term. Â If you think they shouldn't call it New York style, take a trip to Los Angeles and sample some of the many atrocities labelled "New York Style". Â Trust me, you will no longer mind that the delicious pizza served at Home Slice is called New York Style.
And anyone who hasn't yet, you should take advantage of the $10 coupon that gets you $20 worth of food - you can't beat that deal with a stick!
I am only commenting on walking in, getting a slice, and that's it. I did not venture upstairs to the bar area.
I had been DYING to try this place. I read the reviews on Yelp. It just seemed that the timing was never right. I've lived in Toledo for over a year and a half now and once I heard that there was a place with NY style pizza, it always stayed in the back of my mind.
Well, you know how it goes. You get lazy. You order crappy franchise delivery. You don't feel adventurous enough to make the 20 min trek downtown to try the place. And every time you go out downtown everyone wants something more than "just pizza." So I finally had my day. I walked in...service was prompt and friendly. They had a very reasonable price for slices...then I got the pizza.
It's been said before, but I'm going to say it again...it's NOT NY Style pizza. I lived in NY for six years. I ate pizza while I was there. A lot of pizza. A lot of good pizza...and this ain't it. Is the pizza bad? No. Not per se. But, as a previous poster called it "paper plate thin" I couldn't agree more. And just as a paper plate gets transparent when it is greasy, so does their crust. I could see through my crust...it was that greasy and that thin.
The main difference between NY Style pizza and chain/Midwest pizza is that NY Style pizza will NEVER be cooked in a conveyor-belt style oven. There's an art to spinning the pizza in the oven to make sure that it is evenly cooked and the fact that the pizza lays right in the oven, directly on the hot surface, gives it that undeniable crispness to it. I've made a pizza or two in my day...on a conveyor belt unfortunately...but oh, how I long for the days of a true NY slice. Please God, let me win the lotto so I can afford to move back.
Above all...the sauce and cheese taste good and that's 75% of the battle. You can definitely do worse...and I prefer it to several chain places. Plus, it always makes me feel good to support local businesses.
When we get delivered pizza i can eat one maybe 2 slices of pizza....with Home slice I can eat 3-4 easily and still not feel icky full...I love the sauce i love the cheese i love the crust....just love the pizza....don't get it often because we have to get so many to feed a family of 4 but it's a nice night out treat with the hubby!
Review Source:I'm such a fan of this place my wife and I had our rehearsal dinner/party here the night before our wedding (yep, you can rent the upstairs bar area for a few hours). We didn't want our rehearsal dinner to be stuffy or a big to-do, so Homeslice Pizza's upstairs bar area fit our intentions perfectly.
The look and feel of this establishment has always reminded me of a low key, New York City loft. A very cool place to converse with friends, eat great thin crust pizza, and drink beer.
The pizza is super thin with a sauce straight from New York City. What I like about this pizza compared to New York's typical pie is that the crust is much crispier than what is found in The Big Apple. I'm not a fan of big floppy crust. Â In my opinion this is one of the best places to get a pizza. With that mentioned, there is a certain grease factor that comes with this pizza excellence. Â Homeslice brings the grease in a glorious way.
The trendy and hipster crowd matches the look of this place. The bartender/waiter we had last night was very friendly and honest. Our bill had been over charged and he caught it! Â
Homeslice is always busy on weekends, but especially so after Mudhens games.
Lately, I have been buying the Groupon deals for Homeslice every time they are offered, not that I need a deal to walk in to this great Toledo establishment.
Go to Homeslice pizza and surround yourself in pizza pie coolness.
The pizza here is very, very  thin crusted and extra crispy on the edges. If you don't like very thin crust, you will not enjoy your pie.
The hours are odd. Even though they are posted, the place sometimes is late opening or doesn't open at all. We've had better luck eating here between 8pm and midnight Wednesday through Saturday.
You can buy a single slice or a whole pizza. It may be worth it to hang out for 10 minutes while they bake you a fresh pizza, rather than getting the one or two slices sitting in the hot box near the front window.
I often get the feta/cheese bread which is just like a medium sized pizza with no sauce. You can get marinara sauce or ranch dressing ( I think) with it and it's super inexpensive, like $4-$5. Â Typically, I get several of the cheese breads rather than a pizza to feed a group. The cheese is pretty greasy, but if you're in the mood for a super thin crust pizza, you can look past that.
I haven't had any of their meat pizzas, but the veggie pizza is pretty great.
The regular pizzas have very light tomato sauce, light cheese and light toppings. the crust is so thin, you can't really pile on the toppings. Nor is it anything like a New York style pizza. I've even asked the cook to cut it into 4 slices instead of 12 or 14 they usually do, but they said they couldn't do it and we left it at that.
The plates and cups for fountain drinks/water are styrofoam and  the flatware is plastic. They are not winning any awards for eco-friendly.
I've had only one issue with a guy there that appears to be a manager. once, we asked if they could turn down the air, which was blasting in the upstairs area. We were the only customers in the entire place. The (good looking male) manager copped a New York attitude and said " I'm sweating my balls off. I've been here since 9am (it was 10pm). the air stays on. I can turn it up a little if that would be better for you." We shut up and ate our pizza and left him a tip, but we now try to go when he's not there. Too bad we had young kids with us that day, otherwise it probably wouldn't have made too much of a lasting impression.
By far the best pizza joint in Toledo. The pizza has a thin crust and a great sauce. The sandwiches are also very good and filling. The Italian is my favorite. Home Slice also has great cheesy bread.
The restaurant itself is small but nice and cozy. I like the upstairs bar area with sitting the best but I have ate downstairs before. They offer pretty good drink specials and usually have some sort of offers during the weekdays. One of the best times to visit Home Slice is when the Mud Hens are in town because it is conveniently located across the street from Fifth Third Field.
This was my favorite restaurant during the four years I spent in Toledo. Whenever I am in town I have to stop and grab some pizza here.
i was introduced to Home Slice by a friend of mine who attended The University of Toledo. While visiting for a weekend, my friend told me about a really good pizza place that I should check out while in town. Â Living in Chicago, where people's passion for pizza borders on religious fervor, I wasn't expecting much. Â
When I got there, i was pleasantly surprised. I loved the thin crust and the delicious sauce. Â The bartenders were slightly surly but the great pizza and the cheap beer made up for it. Â
Whenever visiting Toledo, driving through on the way to Cedar Point or coming back from the bars and in need of a "4th meal", Home Slice is always a required visit.
To preface, we've only eaten downstairs and out on the back patio, not upstairs, and we seem to go at odd hours, late afternoon or early evening. Â
The first time we tried here, the pizza was okay, kinda pricey for what we got, we had to wait forever for our drinks as the one guy there had to run upstairs to get anything. Â Growing up in NY and NJ, I wouldn't exactly call this authentic NY pizza, but everyone seems to have a different opinion, so I won't comment on that. Â When we finally got our food and everything, the guy serving us from the counter let us know that it was the end of his shift. Â Uh, okay, does that mean we need to leave...? Â Is someone else coming to takeover for you...? Â Not really sure, it was just kind of awkward.
The second time we went, wanting to try again as we lived close by and wanted to like this place, we brought our 2-year-old, who's mostly well-behaved. Â We started inside, then moved to the patio so he could be a little more free. Â We ordered the BBQ pizza, again had to wait for our drinks as our server had to run upstairs, then the buffalo pizza came out instead. Â We tried it, and it was fine, but too spicy for the munchkin. Â We pointed this out to our server, he didn't exactly know what to do. Â My husband munched on it a little longer and bit into something hard either plastic or glass, not sharp, but not supposed to be in pizza. Â A very nice man, we assume was some sort of manager came out and let us know that he was making us a BBQ. Â I was a little impatient and wary at this point, but the BBQ came out with an apology from the manager-type guy. Â Again, it was fine, nothing earth-shattering, but I have to admit the evening was done for me and we haven't been back since...
This is by far the best pizza in Toledo. Since moving here (against my will) a year ago, we've been looking for good pizza and all the pizza places here have fallen WAY flat (esp. Bambino's and Jet's--super nasty).
The atmosphere is definitely more big city/East Coast so my guess is that the people who say it's a dive bar or whatever have NEVER left Toledo.
We went for weekday drinks and pizza so not sure how it would be on a Saturday night. It is on the smaller side which is cozy with not a lot of people but I guess could be claustrophobic if too many people were up in there.
They also have a back deck with a nice downtown view.
I think I've finally found my hang-out in Toledo!
Awesome pizza!
It is indeed very thin crust, and perfectly cooked. Â They run the pizzas through an over on a conveyor belt, rather than manually putting them into an oven. Â So presumably as long as the over is running at the proper temperature and the conveyor maintains it's constant speed, there is no guess work in how long to cook the pizzas. Â Which presumably is why they turn out so good!
This is the second pizza place in a row we went to here where they have good sausage, after years of not finding good sausage (on pizza) in the Toledo area.
It is a younger place, and more expensive than I'd like, but this will definitely be on our rotation of places we go to.
This is in all likelihood a place we never would have discovered without Yelp.
My husband discovered this place on yelp and we decided to give it a try. We went early on a game day, although we had to wait for them to open, it was well worth the visit. The pizza is the tastiest thin crust pizza around... and I mean thin crust, paper thin and delicious! I ordered a personal size and because it was so thin, I ate the whole thing. I wasn't filled up by lots of breading. My husband ordered a large and finished it too. If you are looking for a bread pizza, this is not the place. If you are looking for a crisp thin pizza try this place! It was very good!
We sat in the front area and it was very busy with the chefs and all kinds of people hustling around to get things done. The younger crowd walked in and went right upstairs to the bar. I am sure they were there for the pizza and the beer. We are older and we aren't drinkers, so the front area was fine. Although I checked that it was a little dive-ish, the pizza was great!
Tried Home Slice for a weekday lunch with co-workers, mainly driven by the name of the joint, which we thought was truly awesome.
We didn't find the pizza quite as awesome.
We did show up a touch early for lunch -- before noon -- and we hadn't realized that when they say "thin crust," they really, REALLY mean it. We were the only customers in the place for most of our lunch, and we still had to wait an unusually long time for such a thin-crust pizza. Being used to not-quite-so-thin-crust at other pizza joints, we'd falsely assumed that one large would be sufficient for three or four of us. Maybe if we were drinking beers before a game, or just had the munchies, but not for a standard weekday lunch.
That day, we ended up stopping at another local eatery and having second lunch before going back to work.
I'm guessing this place has a great atmosphere for its intended bar crowd on game days. The upstairs is well-furnished and has a pleasant enough ambiance for a sports bar: dark-finished wood, high-top tables, and TVs above the bar. Not the best place for a lunch with co-workers, though. Many other sports bars downtown do a quite passable double-duty between weekday lunch hours and game-day festivities -- just not Home Slice.
Been coming here more often lately and pretty much all of the bartenders are really nice and the pizza is still the best thin crust pizza around. Â Great specials on certain nights and its always helpful to check Facebook for deals as they will post specials on there but you have to mention it. Â Just about any pizza is good but I have to warn you that the potato pizza is really dry and the ranch dressing they serve it with is not very good but just about anything else is great.
Review Source:As Opening Day of the Toledo Mud Hens season approached, my friend and I decided to visit one of her new local favorites: Home Slice Pizza. Located within a block of the stadium, this two-story bar has a lot of character to it. The walls are simply the bare brick of the old building, giving it an established local hangout feel. The first floor consists of a few booths and the kitchen while the second contains a full bar as well as several tables. Being a smaller place when compared to other bars in that neighborhood, Home Slice offers a more intimate atmosphere allowing more camaraderie between customers. For the game they also had the area behind the restaurant open for outdoor service, taking advantage of the great weather we had.
Home Slice has several beers on tap and offers other regional and top-shelf brews. They also ran several game day specials on your typical American beers, which come in handy when you see that $5+ price of the same beer at the ballpark.
The menu options are your usual pizza parlor food but with some unique twists. My friend and I ordered a large pizza with ham and pineapple, which we split between the two of us without any problem. The pizza is thin crust and was very good compared to other thin crust pizzas. You could actually taste the sauce in this one!
After the game we returned here and were surprised to find a live band playing in the upstairs portion of the bar. I would definitely recommend this hidden gem in the downtown area for a cheaper alternative to the food in the ballpark and a hometown atmosphere.
