I love this place. There, I said it! HKC/BBQ is the best Chinese restaurant in South Florida. Originally being a New Yorker, my impression of Chinese food in Florida is on par with mediocre fast food. Sorry folks, on the general whole, it just doesn't cut it.
UNTIL YOU GO TO HONG KONG CITY BBQ!
This restaurant captures the flavor of Shanghai, which is essentially the style you get in NYC. The egg rolls, the Dim Sum, the soups, oh my!
The sizzling dishes, the duck, the lobster! The ginger scallion, black bean, or black pepper sauces, are killer! The vegetable dishes are bright and fresh. The soy sauce pan fried noodles are right from the streets of Hong Kong! This is where Chinese and Jewish families converge in a feeding frenzy of delightful flavors. If you're too young to remember when Chinese food was exotic, exciting, and mysterious, this place will transport you back to that magical time. It's the kind of place where everybody turns their head to look at dishes coming from the kitchen to the other tables. Recently my family descended on the restaurant for Christmas day. 12 of us covered in duck sauce & hot mustard! It was the best time ever! My wife and I eat there at least once a week. Keep up the good work Hong Kong City BBQ! Delicious!
HK City plays two roles. Â It provides authentic Cantonese food to the Chinese of Broward County. Â It also caters to the elderly residents of the area. Â I observed at the table next to us the party ordered three types of egg foo young, while we had dim sum. Â The dim sum was fine, that is to say delicious because dim sum is inherently delicious, but not first rate in comparison with 1000 simple places in HK or NY Chinatown. Â But it was still delicious and it is available all day and even in the evening. Â (I am a sucker for dim dum at night.) Â So if you are looking for real Chinese food and you are in South Florida, this is the place for you. Â A welcome plus is that it always has customers but it is never crowded.
I am rating it four stars, but if the comparison is with other Chinese restaurants in the area, it would get 5.
This place is absolutely delicious!
I ordered the General Tso Chicken, Mongolian Beef , Singapore Rice Noodles and some steamed pork buns.
All of the dishes I ordered were said to be spicy which I like. Alas none of them were even though I asked for the mongolian beef to be extra spicy. That said every plate was still delicious and extremely fresh. The greens were crisp and fresh, the chicken was breaded in a way different then your run of the mill chinese food place and I could actually taste the butter on the strips of mongolian beef. Also the chrysanthemum tea is a nice way to wash your pallet.
I am definitely going back.
Conflicting review because the food was amazing, but as we were eating the guy behind the check out counter was clipping his finger nails! The sound was unmistakeable so my husband went over to confirm our suspicions. There were nail clippings everywhere and keep in mind they have a open duck heater right where he was standing. While the food was good if that is what they do in the dining room amongst customers I can only imagine the horror in the kitchen! Â Disgusting, I won't be back!
Review Source:You know how Asians can be really mean? Well, this owner takes the cake. Went in to grab a dim sum menu and he was so angry we weren't staying. He did not want to give us one!
It was completely empty, looked like a bad take out place, though you could sit down to order and eat. Prices were not worth what we could get elsewhere.
The strip mall and area are gross. Don't care how good his food is, not worth exposure to this negative energy.
BTW your GPS will go bonkers trying to find this place. It faces the main street.
My Favorite chinese food outside New York
Been going to this spot for years, and i dnt mind the drive from boca raton for this. Here you will find authentic Hong Kong style food including excellent dim sum.
Some of my fav dishes:
Crispy Hong Kong Chicken, Salt and Pepper Squid, Deep Fried Lobster, Â Crispy Duck, Singapore Rice Noodles, Seafood fried rice with gravy and 1 of my favs is the hot and spicy clam casserole....yumm
And they give oranges with the fortune cookie and the bill which is always delicious and sweet.
Spicy cashew chicken was exactly that.....lots of spicy chicken & cashews...was excellent w several layers of flavor...egg foo young & lo mein wa spot on. Â The staff was very friendly w quick take out service. Â A lotta people coming in the door to eat....including chinese people...how often do u see non family members eating at a chinese restaurant? Â Definitely going back....only negative is they forgot our special fried rice &i had to return to get it....but it wa delicious & loaded. Â Fantastic food here...try it out
Review Source:This place was ok, maybe it was the dim sum choices I made that made it a standard experience with only a few standouts. Â The sauteed chinese mustard greens were delicious, fresh and crisp. Â I could have eaten more than one plate and made a meal out of that alone. Â The steamed shrimp dumplings were flavorless, gummy and definitely not fresh...stuffed bean curd skin was pretty tasty. Â Chive pancakes were small and lacked flavor. Â The turnip puddings weren't bad - flecked with pork and a bit bland but had the texture of comfort food. Â The sticky rice with lotus leaf had the right texture but was a bit too fishy - perhaps a bit too much dried shrimp?
Hubby had the sizzling black pepper steak and hated it - he thought the meat was very, very tough and barely ate any of it.
I would still come back to sample some more of the dim sum dishes - like the congee, roast pork, roast duck and pork siu mai. Â I just need to invite someone else to go with me, because hubby refuses to go back!
We went there on Xmas eve, for the first time. I'm so glad we made a reservation; the place was jammed and many parties were waiting. Our table for two was waiting for us when we arrived. One of the first things I noticed was that easily 1/3 of the patrons were Chinese. That's always a good sign. The menu is huge. (very similar to Silver Pond nearby, but without the rude servers). Our server was Sandy and she was very helpful. Also, the Chinese woman sitting at the next table gave us some good tips. If you're the type who wants their egg drop soup, egg foo young, lo mein, etc., go to your regular Chinese joint. This menu is for those that aren't afraid to try something different. A simple dish like sautéed baby bok choy was fantastic. We also had lobster in ginger & scallion sauce which was great. Couldn't resist the spare ribs when we saw a plate full pass by; best we've had in years. In conclusion- great food, very friendly service (no language barrier by the way), reasonably priced. Doesn't look like much from outside; don't let that stop you. We've been there several times since and the place is consistently great.
Review Source:Been going here for years. Â Authentic Hong Kong style food including excellent dim sum.
Some of the best dishes have been:
Crispy Hong Kong Chicken, Salt and Pepper Shrimp with Shells On, Dow See Lobster, Salt Baked Squid, Beef in Black Bean Sauce, Crispy Duck, Beef with Eggplant in Hot Pot, Sizzling Shrimp with Garlic and Onions, Satay Beef, Blue Crab with Ginger & Scallion, Cantonese Beef, Pan Fried Flounder, Roast Pork Chow Fun (Dry), Singapore Rice Noodles, and their BBQ Products.
Wash it down with a Chinese beer and some Tums and you are good to go!
I am only giving this place 5 stars from comparing it to what I've had in South Florida, which is nothing good AT ALL! It's hard coming from the bay area - home of the Chinese! Whenever I ask someone for a good Chinese restaurant - its always Silver Pond, but I beg to differ. This place is actually way better!
Some of my favorite dishes were:
-Chicken, Tofu and Salted fish in a Casserole (Note: Salted fish is an acquired taste) Â
-Beef and Eggplant
-Pea Pod Leaves/Stems (Vegetable dish)
Haven't tried their dim sum yet, but will definitely come back one day for that..
I've been going to this place for a long time. The quality is always good! The staff is always friendly and so are the owners. The food is on the authentic cantonese side, which only a few other chinese restaurants down here are. Lobster specials and peking duck yumm! The center there seems to be revamping itself so that's only a plus. What I like most is the consistency of the food and cleanliness of this establishment.
Review Source:For Dim Sum one of the best joints locally and the rest of the meals are very good too, I believe the Chefs are from NYC Chinatown, the food is very authentic our go to dishes are the Crispy Hong Kong Fried Chicken, Salt Baked Shrimp/Scallops Chicken and Baby Bok Choy, the Beef Fried Rice, the Chicken or Fish Tofu Casserole, the Soya Sauce Chicken, the BBQ Pork just to name a few of our favorites!
Service is good and efficient.
Authentic Chinese food here, but I may have not picked the right dishes this time. I tried the Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce plus Fish and Tofu pot. Both were okay but not the greatness I was expecting. The noodles were much better but was missing something. It was either that the batter or oil for the fish needed freshening in the hot pot dish. The dark sauce and large mushrooms slices were over-powering.
Looking around there seemed to be more regulars who had better choices.
I think I'll try the dim sum or the more straight forward dishes that take advantage of the BBQ chicken, duck or even seafoo
d next time. This may be more of the homey cooking than the fine elaborate menu meals.
I'd give it a 3.5 if it weren't for the more disappointing hot pot.
I saw this place on "Check Please S.Fla" (great show for finding local restaurants, by the way) and knew I had to check it out. It's not a short drive from Miami, however if you're up for a day trip into north Broward or just happen to be in the area, it isn't so bad.
I've never had real Hong Kong BBQ, however have heard rave reviews, so this place shot to the top of my list of must-trys the second I heard about it. Unfortunately, I think I set my expectations just a little too high.
They do indeed have a fresh BBQ counter at the front entrance, however the selection was sparse and looked as though it had been there for a while. I ordered a pound of the boneless BBQ pork and a 1/2 duck to-go. Both were lukewarm when he gave us the box, so instead of picking at it in the car (as we had hoped to do), we waited until we were able to heat it up.
The duck was too dry, although that could be due to sitting out and reheating (used saute pan). The pork was much better, however still nothing extraordinary. It was reminiscent of the BBQ spare ribs that most Chinese-American restaurants serve.
I would be willing to try this place once more dining in, as that may make the difference, however I wasn't impressed by the take-out BBQ.
Another under rated "Hidden Gem" !
The key to having a great meal is that you must know what and when to order at this "Dim Sum Place". Â It's as authentic as you can get!
This is not the "roll-a-round" Â cart dim sum ambience. Â This is all made to order and comes out piping hot, ready to enjoy all the flavors that sets it apart from the others.
As you sit down, Â the server gives you the "pen and paper" to place your order. Something that is out of the 1980's Twighlight Zone. Â Don't be fooled.
*Eggplant stuffed with shrimp - crispy skin and a burst of flavors
*BBQ pork - freshly cut - on the butcher block
*Soy sauce pan fried noodles - savory and a large portion
*Shrimp balls -(Oh My)so crisp on the outside and tender juicy inside
*Sticky rice - large portions
*Shrimp wrapped with bacon - crunchy
*and so much more!!!
Remember to get the chrysanthemum Tea with the aroma and taste that cleanses your palate for your next bite of pleasure.
Xie Xie
(more to come later as we explore the menu)
Went for lunch on a Sunday. Â The place was clean, and the servers were friendly and helpful. Â There is a large variety of Dim Sum, all very reasonably priced. Â We enjoyed various dumplings, chinese mustard greens sticky rice, stuffed egglant, soy sauce pan fried noodles, and BBQ pork... all was simply delicious. Â We had a pot of Chrysanthemum tea, which really complimented everything. Â Overall a great experience, and I look forward to coming back!
Review Source:My friends took me to their fav Chinese place in town for dinner at 8 PM. The owner knew them well.
The place was a bit run down but still clean inside. The service was not intimate but business-like friendly (I expect better for they are frequent diners here). It helped when it's very quiet. My friends even recognized other frequent diners here.
The foods were traditional Chinese. We had spicy shrimp, 1/2 soy chicken, seafood tofu soup, taro and pork belly hot pot, and special fried rice. It comes with free steam rice.
The foods were decent for Florida overall. The prices were a bit steep for my taste. But being in the middle of Asian culture-deprived land, I couldn't complain too much. It's $60 for 3 without any alcohol.
This will be a typical 3-star restaurant in southern Califonria. But it's a good find in Florida.
So diners, there's not many option to choose in this deprived land. So Enjoy.
The only authentic Chinese in South Florida that I've found. Â Real NYC Chinatown feel complete with the BBQ ducks, roast pork, ribs etc hanging in the case as you walk in. Â
Elaborate menu of stuff you don't see everyplace else. Â Where it seems like every Chinese take out place is buying the sauces in a jar because their stuff all tastes the same this place is making stuff themselves and you can really tell the difference. Â Dumplings and Dim Sum items are great and if you luck out and visit during Chinese New Year when they have a whole other menu of special items it will blow your mind. Â
I don't agree with Bob that they discriminate against round-eyes. Â Yes lots of Asian families eat here but the staff - mostly family - always make us feel welcome and the owner even knows my name now. Â
Yes it could be a little cleaner but I've eaten there anyplace from once a week to once a month the last couple years and had no ill effect. Â
Only thing to be careful of is that the menu is very literal. Â If it calls something 'salted' whatever it will probably be so salty you cant eat it. Â Same with something called 'bitter' whatever. Â They mean bitter when they say bitter. Â
Silver Pond down the street is pretty authentic too but it way bigger and feels like a factory. Â This feels like visiting somebody's Chinese uncle.
Let me first say that I love their dim sum, roast pork/ribs, duck, ginger and scallion lo mein, and just a few other dishes. It is the reason we go once a week.
Having read the reviews, it seems that if you know what to order, you will love the food, but if you are looking for wonton soup (salty) or regular lo mein (over-cooked) or shrimp and vegetables (no flavor)- you will not like the food. Go to a regular Chinese restaurant. This is BBQ Chinese style.
What they specialize in is dim sum, roast pork and steamed duck, and the best ginger scallion lo mein I have ever tasted. It's addictive!
The shrimp shu mai and shrimp dumplings are delicious, I have tried a lot of their dim sum, and liked most of it. I am not adventuous enough to try snails in black bean sauce, or jellyfish salad or frog legs, but I see people happily eating all sorts of things all the time. Many of the people are regulars. I tried the ginger scallion lo meiin when I saw it being brought to another table and asked what it was. The noodles are very thin (not regular lo mein thick noodles) and the sauce is amazing. Fresh ginger and shaved scallions mixed in and it's perfect.
Try the sliced meat platter and get a choice of 2 or 3 portions of honey roast pork, duck, or spare ribs. I don't love the spare ribs cut in small pieces, but the flavor is great. It is authentic hanging in the enclosed glass box with the ducks. I lived in San Francisco for 3 years and it tastes the same.
It's not in a horrible part of town- just off 441/Commercial and I have been to way more scary strip malls -just keep going south-far worse!
The service is sporadic, with some communication barriers, and it is not sparkly and clean, but it is good food. The cost of the dim sum is a bit up there, but frankly, I have not found any other place where I like the shu mai as well, or the ginger scallion lo mein, so to me it is worth it. It's fresh, and made when you order.
Horrible Service, Ho-hum food
Food was so-so. Â Its Cantonese cuisine that pretty much 95% of the Chinese restaurants serve in the U.S.A. Â None of the food really stood out to make this place recommendable. Â I'm not comparing this restaurant with restaurants in China Towns (SF, NY, DC, Chicago, etc) but rather with other local Chinese restaurants.
The service at this restaurant is discriminatory. Â Not to Caucasian folks but to Asian folks. Â While me and the gf were waiting to get seated, another (Caucasian) couple walked in 5 minutes behind us. Â They were seated immediately and before us (they did not have reservations - he signaled 2 to the hostess) Â After being seated, we were treated rudely by the wait staff that hurried us to make an order, while they were being very patient and detailing dishes to other guests. Â Our order (of simple stir fried vegetables and beef) took substantially longer than a neighboring table that ordered many more (complex) dishes that also ordered after us.
I have been here several times over 12 years, whenever I am in south Florida. Â The place isn't the cleanest, so if you are looking for that... go somewhere else. Â Chinese restaurants aren't known for their cleanliness. Dim Sum here is good. Â My friend from Hong Kong loves this place when I took her there after her arrival.
The food is a bit on the pricey side because there isn't any competition. Â The quality hasn't suffered thought and that means alot.
So far, this place has been the best Chinese place I've been to in South Florida. Â They aren't lying when they say "Chinatown" food/experience is here. Â It's definitely a place that is akin to Chinatown restaurants in NYC or Chicago.
For some reason it's been hard for me to find Canto-style food in So FL but here it is! Â And the food is tasty and with authentic flavors and I liked how they had dim sum as well. Â All the food came out quickly and fresh... I am definitely a fan!
My cons for this place however is that it's kind of in a ghetto location, the cleanliness is a little questionable (but I can chalk it up to the "Chinatown" experience), sometimes I wonder how long the meats have been in that glass container by the cashier (I hope turnover is high!), and I find the prices to be a bit on the high side (but I'm used to cheap Chinatown prices).
Aside from the cons, this is definitely my favorite Chinese place so far and I will most certainly keep coming back (despite the 40 min drive) and you should too!
This little dive is off SR 441 - just North of Commercial Blvd. Â
Not too hard to find - just look for the Neon advertising New York Style.
My brother was in from Los Angeles and craving some Dim Sum! Â So, I thought we would try out HKB as we could practically walk to the restaurant from where we were staying.
He said the dishes were a bit overpriced at $3.00 each
I think our market can charge a bit more than Los Angeles due to lack of competition.
We ordered off of a list and used the picture menu and also asked for dishes in Chinese.
Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.
The tea was hot and delicious - Jasmine.
The dishes came out as they were prepared.
No favorite dishes yet, typical Dim Sum, have definitely had better in Canada, Los Angeles and Dallas, but this will sedate your craving and better than Tropical Chinese in Miami.
Really was dissappointed especially with all these great reviews on here.
This was definately in a shady part of town, tucked in the corner of a dark, spooky looking strip mall. Â The only reason why I dared to venture in was because of all the great reviews this place has. Â Don't get me wrong, I'm not one to shy away from hole in the wall places, but this place was very blah!
First off, the place wasn't the cleanest joint (and I've been to restuarants in china town San Fran, and they were cleaner than this place). Â I really got excited about being able to order dim sum, which I did, and sadly that was a disappointment as well. Â The dimsum tasted like they purchased a frozen box dimsum kit that you buy at the frozen section of the asian market, did not taste fresh what soever. Â The honey garlic chicken was WAY TOO SWEET. Â The snow peas beef was not bad however.
While we ate we got to listen and watch some Chinese pop singer rock out to some chinese toons on TV(that by the way you could sing along to if you could read chinese b/c they had the insriptions at the bottom of the sreen to follow along kareoke-style)
I kind of felt like I was teleported to the mid-90's when I walked into this place; LOL!
On a recommendation from Tim F. I had lunch at HKC BBQ. It was excellent. I had the lunch special, shrimp in a spicy sauce with pea pods instead of broccoli and an egg roll with won ton soup. The egg roll was perfect. Fried to perfection it was tasty. The soup was good, but the main course was spot on. The shrimp were cooked with a nice sauce and the vegetables were fresh and crunchy. Just heaven on a plate.
Thanks Tim and remember to tell them Dan sent you and Stay Hungry!
I just love this restaurant.
If you want Hong Kong style dim sum, noodle soups or Chinese BBQ, than you have found the place. I walk in here and I feel like I am back in New York's Chinatown. On the dim sum menu try the turnip pudding, which has bits of roast pork mixed into it and fried to perfection. Also they make really good chrysanthemum tea, which goes perfect with any of the dim sum choices.
Here is a link to the website: http://www.hkcitybbq.com/ Â , which has links to their menu/dim sum items.
One of our dinner guests flew in from Hong Kong that morning and said that this is very authentic food. Â This was also my best dining experience in Miami so far, aside from Tropical Chinese dim sum on cart (from a different visit). Â To be honest I hope to never have to visit Miami again in my lifetime. Â But, if I must then I will return to Hong Kong City BBQ. Â The atmosphere is exactly what I expected and it was nice to see all of the workers eating dinner as well when we were there. Â
One of my co-workers ordered the Steak Kew with Mushrooms, which was very large chunks of medium rare beef that should have been marinated in wine for a little longer to remove the tangy/buttery flavor. Â
The Shrimp in XO Sauce was by far my favorite dish because the shrimp were plump with the perfect snap to them and the snow peas were cooked perfectly. Â
The Salt & Pepper Tofu was quite impressive and would lead me to believe that any of their S&P dishes would be just as good. Â Mostly because of the topping used, which was fried garlic, hot pepper, and cilantro. Â The best topping ever. Â
It is sad, but I really would not recommend their BBQ Char Su Pork. Â However, if this is really one of the only places in Miami to get Chinese BBQ then you might have to adjust your expectations. Â On the last page of the menu was a huge selection of different Chinese style vegetables: U Choy, Gai Lan, Snow Pea Tips, Water Spinach. Â However, they were sold out of everything but U-Choy, so we ordered that. Â
Hong Kong City BBQ is definitely the place to go for anything seafood, Chinese greens, and BBQ.
I was trying to explain to my guest from Hong Kong that the same style food is served in Miami Beach on a pre-fixe menu for $100.00 dollars and he just could not understand the reasoning in that. Â I prefer everyday, authentic, and homestyle Chinese cooking that tastes delicious. Â I could care less about atmosphere or $100.00 price tag. Â Expect to pay $8.00-$14.00 for a large family style dish here. Â Hot jasmine tea as the drink of choice.
I don't know why Hong Kong doesn't have absolutely stellar reviews. Â I've been eating here for years, both before and after the tragedy with the owner. Â
My parents and I come for regular meals and dim sum - I love the stuffed eggplant and stuffed tofu - both stuffed with shrimp. Â The rest of the menu is excellent as well.
So what that 441 is a dingy neighborhood; it could be a lot worse. Â If anything, it means cheaper rent and thus cheaper food!
Yayyy to Dim Sum & Roast Duck!
It was a random drive by while I was starving that caught my eye in a shady part of town in a shady shopping center. It was the neon "New York Style" lettering that caught my eye. Hidden gem!
I had (from Dim Sum menu) Roast Duck over white rice, shrimp dumplings, and chicken feet (yes I did say chicken feet). It was all very very good and fresh! Its the next day now and I didn't get sick...yayyyy. Â Oh and it is cheap cheap cheap but then again dim sum should be cheap. I will go back next time I stray to these parts.
I would give it 5 stars but the location keeps me from doing so.
i went here for lunch/dim sum today. it was pretty decent for Florida (after coming from NYC and SF, i think i have a good idea of what good chinese food is :)). we had ha-gow, shiu mai, fried taro stuffed dim sum, singapore fried noodles, and wonton shrimp/pork soup. the dim sum didn't look like it was made on-site, but they were pretty good. i'm not a big fan of singapore noodle, so that was just EH to me. wonton soup, typical msg soup, but the pork/shrimp wontons were really pretty good!
i will probably come back for their cha-shiu since they are a bbq place. next time!
Went here for the first time in awhile. Although this place is located in a rather grungy spot, the food is above average compared to other Chinese restaurants. I always order the Pepper Steak or the General Tso chicken...can't go wrong. If you're into Dim Sum, they have a menu as well.
The service and atmosphere are just OK. But if you want New York style Chinese food, this is a good spot.
BTW, hope the review by Cindy is not true.
recently re-opened since the shooting a year ago.
bbq ribs are still awesome--sweet and salty, cut bone in, with perfect dark charred glaze. Â better than chinese bbq further south near silver pond
they didn't have the oysters i wanted...
cha siu excellent ~$4 for 0.5lb
maybe they will be serving dim sum in the future?
Dude...don't go here! I don't trust this place, especially after they were featured on WSVN CH.7's unsanitary food practices...I don't mind a hole-in-the-wall atmosphere but it just gives me a bad vibe when even their dim sum is bad.
There are just other places you can go. The only reason why I go here is because my mom likes their BBQ pork (char siu) and roasted duck that they can chop-up and prep for you (they have the meats hanging by the window). That's about the only thing I trust here.
