Ive always wanted to stop into this place to see what it was like because everyone said it was "underground". That sounded cool. So yes it's underground, which was cool but once you get to the bottom it wasn't that great. There is a pool table in the back and just a bunch of chairs everywhere; some of the chairs are even plastic.... Anyways they could have done a lot better of a job with the atmosphere. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because it's open until 3 and 4 in the morning which is cool if you want some place to chill after a bar or club.
Review Source:This was the first Hookah place I ever went to and it was defiantly an awesome experience! From the outside it looks sort of sketchy, next to a out of business Blockbuster, but once you go down the stairs and enter, its a whole new vibe. During the week when I've gone, they play current movies and its a real relaxing environment (great place to study/socialize). The couches are super comfortable. During the weekends, they play great music and its a more up-beat fun environment and a fun place to go on a Saturday night with your friends. On request you can get a deck of cards and play some poker, or go play some pool on their pool table. The staff that work there are awesome and have always been friendly to me and my friends. The hookah is great as well. Its not too far from CSUN and the 118 freeway, so its not a pain to get to. There is a 24hours open Subway a 2 minute walk from The Source in case you wanna grab a bit to eat. I would recommend it to anyone
Review Source:I was a regular here years ago, and slowly, this place lost my interest. Parking is never an issue, but walking down the entrance feels like you could get shot in the back of the head at any moment. Can't tell if they made any improvements on their products, but from what I can recall 2 years ago, it seems like the same stuff. After experiencing my own hookah and other establishments out there, this place could do for better. The air circulation in that place seems to work at times, but overall the place smells pretty strong of coals and you're basically left breathing in those fumes the entire time you're there. The last time I went, thought I'd give it another shot. I left the place with a splitting head ache.
Review Source:Not gonna lie, Hookah Source is probably the most ghetto hookah bar I've ever been to. The entrance is hella sketch; Â it looks like you're going down into someone's basement and you almost feel like you should be armed. But once you enter the lounge, it has a really great vibe to it. It's ALWAYS packed with a younger college crowd; I've never seen a dead night here. It's loud and busy but it's a great place to bring a big group. The music is loud as well (sometimes too loud), but it's usually pretty good - lots of house, dance, hip-hop, pop, top hits, etc. And the hookah? Pretty legit. They remove tiles from the tables to set the hookahs in, which is a great way to keep them from tipping over. Considering the commotion in here, it's a pretty smart safety precaution. The couches need to be replaced since they're all pretty busted. Actually, the whole place could use an overhaul. They have pool tables and a couple of nice wall-mounted flat screens. There's always like 10 people working and they're insanely busy, but they do a good job getting to you to fix coals and whatnot. I've probably been here half a dozen times now and still keep going back for more.
Review Source:I'm not HUGE into hookah, but my best friend really is. Â When I moved to Northridge and saw this place within walking distance I had to check it out for him. Â I instantly dug it. Â I like the underground feeling. Â I like the couches. Â The addition of the artwork is cool. Â The TVs are big and great. Â I love going in there for movie nights on Tuesdays. Â Nice relaxing way to smoke hookah and enjoy a movie. Â Their selections are very wide. I've seen Due Date, Tron and The King's Speech while in here just to demonstrate some of the variety they pick out.
The flavors there are pretty legit. Â I usually ask for recommendations from the staff in places like that or have my friend order when he's with me. Â Being a hookah master, he's been to every different kind of place like this in existence, and even he admits the place has a total charm to it. Â I think he also likes that even though he lives 2.5 hours away and has been there only a handful of times the staff always remembers him. Â That's another reason this place rocks for me. Â The staff pays attention to their clientele. Â Sure there's no liquor allowed inside. Â But that doesn't mean you can't show up drunk. Â
The people in there tend to be on the younger side, but it is an 18+ establishment, so what can you do? Â I prefer the nights when it's quieter over the nights when the music is so loud you can't think. Â Probably why I like movie night so much. Â The 10 o'clock movie is usually pretty unwatchable due to the large crowds and all the talking. Â The 12 o'clock show is always a lot more chill and you can actually watch it which is nice. Â If you're in the area looking for a chill spot, check it out.
As many of the other reviews stated this is a college hangout  and does not serve alcohol. Despite those above stated terms I would still go back because their prices were reasonable and as long as you're with good company, who cares who's around and if you're drunk or not.
They earned my 3 stars from the following:
They had many flavors to choose from, (which I will be exploring when I go back) but I had the pleasure of tasting the sour apple gummy bear. It was just as good as candy.
They had large television screens, games to play, and a pool table.
They had a DJ who made sure we were bobbing our heads.
Definitely not the most luxurious hookah bar I've been to, but it was a chill spot that I will be returning to.
I do not smoke. Now I end up at this place cause my BF bro decided to celebrate his Bday here. OK now for the actual review of this place: From outside this place looks likes its being leased and its an empty suite in the plaza. U open the door and u see stairs going down to a lower floor WTF?! I hear the music so I'm assuming I'm at the right place. Its dirty the "welcoming" area (where the stairs are) is ghetto. I make it down stairs and the place looks DECENT. (Inhale) 2 flat screens one on each side of the place, the non-alcoholic bar to the right and at the end where the bathrooms are they have a pool table. Honestly I can't really give this place a review on their services since I didn't use them or made use of what they sell BUT my opinion of the place is on looks and ambience rating. Torn couches with holes and stains on them. Cheap plastic chairs for those who didn't come early enough to get a seat on a couch. I DID NOT use the restroom no way! My BF and his bro +friends said the pineapple flavored smoke was good (I call it smoke) don't really care for the proper term. point is Guy who works there whom as coming around every 20min just about was real nice. Smiling and with good customer service skills which is always a plus. Wont go back cause its not my cup of tea BUT if I ever decide to smoke that stuff this would NOT be my place of choice. THIS IS MY OWN OPINION
Review Source:Legit "broke college student" hangout for hookah with the noted accents that it is (a) close by CSUN, much closer than Cloud 9, and (b) in a cellar so you feel hipster and undergroundish that you totes know about this place.
Good flavor selection for the hookah. Fair price. Cool place. I recommend it and will be back.
I wish this place had a better ambiance. I liked that it was under ground and everything. I liked that there were couchces as seating and billiards. What I didn't like was that the music was very low and the TV was on blast as if we came to watch TV. I would've stayed home and smoked a blunt if that was the mood I was in. It being my first time here, I thought it'd be a good idea to bring it to the employee's attention so he'd suggest something in particular. Uhm, FAIL. He just wanted us to make our order and that's it. He was like a zomby watching over us and breathing in our ears. Like, dude relax!
We made our order and off he went. Wasn't that great. Our refills would lag for a century and a day. The dude was way off point.
Will I come back here again ? Probably not.
Very laid back, we frequent this place (at least once a week). Hookah is good, service is fantastic (everyone here is so cool), they're open late, play movies I believe every Tuesday unless they've changed that, remodeled it not long ago too so it looks nice, and always have a good DJ. It's underground so can get a little stuffy and that does bother some people, never bothered me though. They don't serve food (but you can bring your own - yaye) and there isn't a clubby atmosphere here, music but no dancing.. It's super mellow and if that's what you're looking for this place doesn't disappoint.
Review Source:I've been here a couple times, the most recent time being this past week, my first time there in nearly a year. Maybe it's just me and I've gotten bored with the activity of sitting down and just smoking for how ever long you're there. Or maybe the allure of being 18 and finally able to go into these places has long since worn off. Or possibly its the creepy, dirty, dimly lit stairs you have you go down just to get to the place but I don't like it here. Personal opinions aside, their customer service needs work. I've worked in restaurants, I know how it is when it's busy but during my last visit here employees came to our table once only to bring our hookah and in the next hour visited every table around us without being asked to and passed us by even when we tried to get their attention and our coals had all gone out. If you really want hookah go to a restaurant with it. It may be a little more expensive but at least you'll have a waiter for help.
Review Source:Honestly, I find this place almost creepy.
Hidden down in the basement of a strip mall off Reseda, is this dingy little hookah spot.
I don't think I would have ever visited it, had it not been for my affiliation with the Greek System @ CSUN -- since plenty of Frat events were held here.
The hookah is fine and there is a good selection of flavors. The prices are good too...it's just the ambiance...it's not somewhere I really want to hang out.
Now that I'm a grown up, I'll probably never set foot back in here again. But, have fun collegiates.
No alcohol served here, just soda, water and hookah. Â
This place is underground, yes, you walk down a bunch of stairs that lead to the hookah cave with lounge-like setup; couches & coffee tables scattered about, the walls lined with flat screens.
This kinda of set up is perfect  in the summer for Northridge because it gets hot and toasty.  Great place to cool down and relax with friends and smoke on hookah. Theres plenty of flavors to choose from, Gummi bear my favorite.
Check for happy hour specials!
Pretty chill place. Very relaxed atmosphere. Underground which is cool.
the Good
its cheap, only $15 or $20 bucks which you can split with your friends.
You can bring in your own food so save money there too.
they have good music playing and flat screen t.v.s.
A good mix crowd of people so it helped me blend in.
Most sodas and waters are only $1
The bad
Well not one of those hookah places where people are partying or clubbing at. They don't serve food so its not one of those places where you can eat by ordering.
Overall I liked this place. Alot of CSUN students here.
I'd like to start off by saying: people who give this sh*thole a 5 star review have not been to a real hookah bar/lounge...
I haven't been here in years, and today's experience reminded me why.
So I came here with a friend because we needed somewhere near CSUN to chill...
We sat down and ordered a hookah... were told that it's happy hour so the hookah is half off...
We smoked the hookah for about 40 minutes... the staff came by ONCE to change the charcoal and blow out the hookah...
when we were ready to leave, I asked for the check and they told me I had to go to the counter to pay... w/e... went up... was told that the total for one $10 hookah is $12.62... I inquired why that was the total and I was told that they charge tax (understandable) and that they charge a %15 gratuity... which is NOT understandable...
GRATUITY IS EARNED!! I didn't feel like they earned %15... but w/e... was in a hurry so decided not to argue...
gave the girl $13.11... and she actually gave me 49 cents back...
like... REALLY... not 2 quarters to make everyones' lives simpler??
w/e... I don't care about the penny... it's just a matter of principal...
simple rundown:
the place looks like crap...
the hookah is w/e... (the bowls are way smaller than the usual bowls you get anywhere else)
there is absolutely not ambiance... unless u consider a dirty old room good ambiance...
and because it's in a damn dungeon, there's NO oxygen... I was nauseous in no time...
also they don't have food and their drinks are sold in a can...
NOT WORTH WASTING YOUR MONEY!
I can't wait for this craphole to get shut down so that something better can open up near CSUN...
I've been coming here on an off for the past 4 years. This place has truly grown in the years they have great bowls, and friendly staff. My friends and I are regulars here so they always greet us when we walk in. The gummy bear and the blueberry watermelon are out usual favorites mojito is good as well if you like something minty.
They have a DJ on Wednesday nights and it's a free refill if you have a college ID.
The outside of this place does not hint at all that their is a hookah establishment there. Once you open the door you walk down a flight of stairs. The walls walking down are full of unpatched hole in the walls, real classy.
Anyway inside its like many Hookah lounges with the couches (with holes) along the wall and some in the mid of the room. They have a pool table (which the white balls get stuck sometime) and TVs, which play the Laker games.
From my experience Hookah lounges are usually dim but this place seemed a bit brighter than other places and my friend and I had to move because the light was glaring down on us. Anyway after the Laker game ended they started to play hip hop music.
The Hookah we had was good. Now about the crowd it was mixed and young . More on the crowd of this place, while my friend and I were playing pool a guy literally passed out on the table and hit the floor. Man that guy was out of it.
Anyway I've gone to better and my experience did not turn me into a client.
From the front this placed looked closed down. The windows were painted white and there was no sign or anything saying they were open. Opening the door and my concerns only grew. Holes in the wall, grafitti on the dark walls and still no sign- only sound of faint music coming from the bottom of a stairwell. Carefully I walked down the stairs with some buddies...(If I were alone, I may have just turned around, gotten in my car and driven far away)...but, once we reached the bottom of the stairwell, we were greeted with the sweet smell of hookah smoke.
We grabbed a corner sofa in the back and enjoyed a Jolly Rancher, Moijto and Whit e Peach...all delicious but a little HARSH. One so much so that they took it off our tab. We got milk in all of them, hoping it would make it more calm. My fav was the moijto.
The bathroom was all kinds of tagged up, and the entire place was just so fantastically broken. A true hole in the wall, but a chill place to enjoy hookah. No DJ spinning around 9-11 on Friday night...around 10 or so they played some hip hop.
With the right group I'd come back. It was a nice change from the SPOT!
Let me start out by saying i used to come to this place on a regular basis with my friend Elias, and i loved it. but after last night - i have a whole new respect for hookah source.
upon my first visit, after the door opened i looked at my friend with fearful and uncertain eyes - the stairwell has a very creepy "theres something waiting at the bottom to rape you" kind of feel. but Elias assured me we would be fine, so i proceeded. upon reaching the bottom i was delightfully surprised to find a really chill hookah joint. couches, tables, good music, AWESOME staff... the works. i have been going here for over a year now, and it is still one of my favorite places, not favorite hookah places, one of my favorite places period.
remember when i said i had a new respect for this place after last night? well... here goes. i came here with my friend Geoffrey and we got a bowel of Mojito flavored hookah [not a fan of mint usually, but i had a cough and the mint soothes it, Chris recommended Mojito - smart man. it was delicious. moving on, we stayed and smoked for about an hour and a half, talking, enjoying the atmosphere. i have never seen this place so busy, but then again it was Friday night. after we were done smoking, we got up to go pay for tab and go. i felt really light headed, like i was drunk, which was weird because one: i had not had a single drop of alcohol, and two: i was perfectly fine 2 seconds ago. when i reached the counter though, i fainted and threw up. i came to sitting in a chair a few feet away from the counter with Emad looking at me telling me i was going to be alright and the i had stood up too fast. he helped me take a few sips of a Pepsi and had another employee [who's name i do not know] fan my face for a good 15 minutes. the staff took VERY good care of me. they checked on me often and a few of them stayed there to make sure i was alright. they even waived our bill - including the Pepsi Emad handed me =]. Nick told me to stay there as long as i needed, after i had tried to stand up and realized i was still very dizzy. after i was okay enough to make it up hte stairs without passing out, Nick had the guy who had been fanning my face walk us up the stairs and out the door to make sure we got to the car alright, and to make sure i was not driving. I was SO very thankful for the guys that work there last night. I mean i have grown to love them anyway, but i now have a very deep appreciation for them as well. they never once made me feel embarrassed or like i had inconvenienced them in anyway.
In conclusion, this place has everything a really awesome hang out needs: great atmosphere, awesome music, fantastic and caring people, etc. I would highly recommend coming here. once you get past the rough outside, this place is fantastic.
Great Live DJ Mixes to Go with your Smokes
This was one of the more younger crowds I've been to for hookah lounges. It's near CSUN so it attracts a bunch of college students. We tried out the milk in the hookah for the first time here. It gave a nice smoke although I prefer hookah without any additives. You have two LCDs that are playing some television. One of the screens was very blurry but the other one looked good. There's plenty of seats. You get good coal service and the drinks are cheap. Compared to other places the lighting is much darker but it's a nice touch. The DJ was playing excellent house music. It's probably the better house mixes I've heard in Los Angeles.
From the front entrance you can barely tell there's anything there. It's just a big mirror image. If my friend didn't tell me there's a lounge inside I'd never known it existed. Once you open the door you follow the stairs down, hear the music, smell the smoke, and you know you are at the right place.
College prices, good music, good smokes, enjoy!
My first hookah experience was here. Â As my friend and I were walking down the stairs, the first thing we heard was the sounds of blood curling screams and knives/swords clashing. Â Once we entered the room it was just "LOTR: The Return of the King" in surround sound. Â Felt like we were going to a slaughterhouse. Â
The staff was very attentive. Â They changed the stuff every few times. Â I had a great time just relaxing and chilling with my homie. Â I want to go back again. Â I heard a rumor about the hoses, but I can't judge based on one opinion.
This place is a great spot . I have gone here a number of times and have never been disappointed. Â When getting your hookah, make sure to ask for milk and a clear hose, so its smoother and you will get more smoke. The flavors are great, the hookah's are very clean. The atmosphere it pretty cool, upon entering it looks pretty shady, but when you go down the stairs its chill. Good place to relax and smoke hookah. about $15-$25 per hookah. The service is amazing, they change your coals every 15 minutes with out having to ask, also the waiters are extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. The music is perfect, DJ is good, a pool table as well.
Go here for hookah if you want a good experience, I am positive you will love it and keep coming back for more.
A good hookah bar must have 2 things above all else: atmosphere, and quality hookah. This one is very strange and may turn a lot of people off, but they get most of the basics right. I went there with a friend who is a regular there (almost a daily customer) and I was underwhelmed, mainly because he built the place up so much.
From the outside, the place looks pretty unimpressive. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with a flight of stairs going down into the actual business itself, which is basically a giant basement that looks like someone's living room. Don't get me wrong, I like the place, but not as a hookah bar. When I'm here it seems like I am smoking hookah out of a friend's garage. They have 2 tvs on opposite walls, i'd say 42" or maybe 46"s, one tv was playing "Gladiator" while the other had a group of people hunched around a PS3 playing Street Fighter IV. Again, a chill, laid-back place for sure, but hell, if I want to smoke hookah and watch Gladiator I can stay at home.
As for the hookah itself: I like the flavors. They have some interesting mixtures I've never seen attempted (churro? wtf?!) but ended up tasting really good (a friend ordered that one, not me). The staff was friendly and attentive, never neglecting to bring coals. What I didn't like: they used milk to fill the base of the hookah instead of the standard water (i put ice water in mine, myself). For what reason? I do not know but ice-water gives much smoother hits in my experience. The other complaint was I didn't like the hoses. They looked like clear tubes, like an IV line, except thicker and pretty solid feeling. While they were thicker than normal hookah hoses which in theory should give you more smoke, it burned the shisha (hookah tobacco) quicker and made the hookah seem harsh pre-maturely. Regular hoses work better in function and look more authentic, I can only imagine them using their own special hoses to be different.
While I might have seemed a little harsh on the place, it's not to say that I didn't enjoy myself. I just like my hookah bars filled with belly dancers and middle-eastern music, so it wasn't quite my type. But it's a fun place to take people that might feel out of place in such a hookah bar. I know some non-ethnic people trip out or feel uncomfortable when they hear arabic music or go to a place frequented almost entirely by armenians, persians, or arabs all speaking different languages, so this is more of the hookah bar for the "mainstream" crowd.
Let me start by telling you some things I hate, which have been present in 95% of the hookah joints that I have been to in LA, the valley and in San Diego:
Staff who are indifferent, slow or downright rude
Middle Eastern music
A mediocre attempt at Middle Eastern decore
Uncomfortable couches
A dance floor
Thank God for the Hookah Source! It's ghetto-hip, the music is great (hip-hop and rap) and not too loud ( DJ Mister Mike is actually pretty good, and you can buy his CD's there, too), the decor is, in my opinion, just what it should be, dark, with some mirrors, black lights, plenty of seating that includes comfy couches and chairs, flat screen TV's that are always showing a half-way decent movie and a fish tank and pool table. The crowd is always mellow. Every time we go, I feel relaxed and chill as soon as we walk through the door and go downstairs. It is NOT hot and smokey; the air conditioning is always going, in fact, I have always bring a jacket because I sometimes get a little cold.
And what really sets the Hookah Source apart from everywhere else? The service!!!! It is consistently absolutely great. Always genuinely upbeat, friendly, attentive and fast! The guys that run the place come over to shake hands and ask how we're doing, and they always remember our usual order. Ever been smoking and your coals burn down to nothing? And then you have to go get ask the waiter to get you more? And he takes ten minutes? At the Hookah Source, someone comes around ever ten or fifteen minutes and gives you fresh coals, weather you need them or not, so your hookah always hits great. They don't sell food, but they let you bring in your own. Which is fine with me, as most food sold at hookah places is unappetizing and way overpriced.
The Hookah Source is a tad more pricey than some other places, but it is so worth it! I will never go anywhere else to smoke. I do have a few complaints... I wish they would turn on the captions on the TV's. And they supposedly sell Hookah Source shirts, but every time I ask, they're always out. Nothing critical, though; the Hookah Source is still the best hookah place for miles around.
this place used to be my hookah bar of choice because it was in my neighborhood. its not terrible but it isnt great. on most nights it is very loud, with a very mediocre DJ spinning, and it gets very hot since you are smoking and it is underground. that being said the hookah is decent, the staff is cool, the couches are set out and the pipes are placed on coffee tables in the middle. its a pretty chill layout, with a couple TVs on mute to watch. not a bad place but i highly recommend the Blue Nile on Winnetka. it is a new place but it is really amazing. great staff, great hookah, great food
Review Source:My friend Thuan and I frequent this place. We went last night after a long day at our perspective office jobs. Couches and tables are low laying , so it's easy to smoke your hookah. There's a pool table (I believe a separate charge to play), and two LCD TVs in the center of the place. The couches have seen better days (burns and what not, decent, but not plush), but I'm not here for the decor, just to chill, smoke hookah, shoot the sh*t. One of the managers already knows us because we're here so much. The overall atmosphere of this place is really, really, chill. The people are laid back and never had or seen a problem with the other patrons. They mostly play hiphop, but not the club stuff, more the underground hiphop. Thursday nights (@ 10) a live DJ spins. He was spinning some decent Mos Def, Common. Got people's heads bobbin'. Now, I've never been to another hookah place, but our hookah and two waters, ran us $28. The one bowl of hookah lasts a couple of hours. Just be careful not to inhale too much and get light headed. One of my friends passed out from inhaling too much and didn't get himself some sufficient air. A good place to hang out, chill atmosphere, listen to some hiphop. It's in between the Blockbuster and Big 5, literally minutes from CSUN.
