I was not looking forward to Houlihan's late on a Saturday afternoon but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Very competitive prices on drinks and accommodating service. I ordered a steak and wedge salad combo that that had a smallish filet, an iceberg wedge, some vegetables and some cheese that hit the spot. The dining rooms was full of couples, families and a table full of dressed-up kids celebrating prom night. We had a nice time.
Review Source:we tried this restaurant because of a coupon they mailed to us. Some of the food was good but some was really uninspired. The service is not attentive and the management could careless about our comments!!!!!!!!!! too many other choices to waist time on this one unless you are a big happy hour drinker they have 1/2 price drinks at the bar only not the dinningroom 3pm to 7pm
Review Source:I like the food in all, but the dress code for the hostesses is not professional. The girls!! The guys are fine. They look like they are a guest and you cannot tell that they are an employee. Â They are wearing something that is too short or showing off too much skin for a job. Wearing a dress at a restaurant as a hostess is bad, especially when they keep pulling it down! Â I do not want to see your underwear while I am trying to eat!!!!! Â Short shorts and low cut shirts should also not be worn either. Â It was very hard to find the hostess when I needed to get another menu and could not find her, and she was right behind me standing at the bar. I didn't know she worked there!
Also, the servers need to do a better job in getting a salad, soup, or appetizer before the entree! Â I do not want to get them at the same time. The point of an appetizer is to get it before the entree.
We've came here for drinks a few times, but dinner once (recently) - and I was under-whelmed. Â The bar and atmosphere is nice, the service is good, and overall it isn't a bad place to hangout at all.
App's are huge and tasty but the main meals were a little on the small side. Â Still tasty, but you expect a little more. Â The 'small portion' salman meal that two people got looked like a small appetizer.
We'll be back, but its not first on my list when thinking of where to go.
Ack! Â I should have known better. Â I usually avoid national chains because they tend to be insipid. Â For years I had passed this Houlihan's by without going in, but, after hearing from so many people over a such long period of time that Happy Hour is fantastic, I figured we should give it a try. Â And trying a new place at Happy Hour always seems like a good idea. Â A restaurant can be sampled without risking too much money, while it tends to put its best foot forward at that time in order to lure customers back for a more traditional and expensive meal. Â Well....
To begin, the space is pleasant enough. Â The atmosphere had some nice energy. Â And a 20oz draft Boulevard Wheat is $3. Â Not a bad first impression of the place. Â (Although I will say, with zero judgement, that the bar area seems to attract 50-60 year old guys cruising for younger women.) Â Being famished, Sweetie and I ordered both the Chiplotle Chicken Nachos and the Disco Fries. Â (So much for New Year's resolutions.) Â We happily sipped on our beers while enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. Â Then the food came...
The nachos were utterly bland, and had almost nothing in the way of toppings. Â The few pieces of chicken didn't taste like anything, not like chicken, not like chipotle. Â If I hadn't known what I was eating, I wouldn't have been able to identify the substance. Â The "cheese" sauce was almost non-existence, which, given its ersatz nature, was probably a good thing. Â The little scoop of guacamole had a gray exterior. Â And the chips seemed stale. Â Ack, I say again.
The Disco Fries turned out to be a little pile of fries with a few little hunks of pot roast, beef gravy, and cheese curds. Â The menu said cheese curds, that is, but we were unable to find any. Â The fries themselves, I must say, were delicious, freshly fried and perfectly crispy. Â But the toppings. Â (Can I say Ack a third time?) Â The scant pot roast was mostly gristle. Â And the beef gravy was terrible. Â It was clearly made as follows. Â Canned beef broth, which is already too salty, was reduced down and down and way down to a very thick glaze. Â The end result was so overpoweringly salty that is was inedible.
Though I am happy we tried Houlihan's after all this time (because it is good to take a chance), we will not go back, except maybe for one of those $3 Boulevards and a bowl of naked fries.
The reality is there are very few places to go for a happy hour north of the river. And I define a happy hour different from "grabbing a beer". Hou's is a legitimate place for a happy hour.
They have a good patio - good because they've done nothing to hide the fact that it's in a parking lot. Come on, put a nice privacy fence around that, make me feel like I'm not tailgating.
There's a full bar, basic wine selection and a good variety of food. I almost always get the mushroom and arugula flatbread pizza and the veggie sliders. Both are really kinda exceptional for a restaurant bar. The food is presented well, is tasty, always prepared well and is consistent.
I have gotten other vegetarian options but it's been a while since I've been with anyone who's gotten a meat option. I don't have any reason to believe you wouldn't be happy if that's what you're into.
1:10 visits gets me a server who's not great but I've never had a visit that's been flat out troublesome. They're not expensive but I somehow can never find a way to spend less than $60 for two - it's probably that "happy hour" thing I mentioned earlier.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this chain restaurant as the food here is actually inventive, fresh, and GOOD. Â Chains usually invoke images of bland food with boring options for vegetarians such as the typical pasta primavera or a portabella mushroom sandwich. Â However, Houlihan's has excellent vegetarian options and of course many entrees for meat-eaters.
The menu includes small plates that allow you to mix-and-match items including mini-veggie sliders (!!!) and larger entrees that range from about $12-$19. Â I had the mini-veggie slider and the Tuscan white bean salad. Â Both were excellent. Â The veggie slider was one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had and I immediately wish I had ordered the larger version of it. Â My fiancee had the wild mushrooms enchiladas that was absolutely fantastic. Â My friend is a regular here for their happy hour specials especially their non-traditional Long Island Iced teas such as the peach flavored. Â
What brought us here was my free birthday entree voucher but I'd happily return and pay. Â They frites bar looked interesting and seems like the perfect bar snack.
I used to frequent this location when it was Red Star Tavern and am happy that another good restaurant has taken its place. Â Love the ambiance and open kitchen here.
I bring the kids here about once a month. Â Tonight we came to do the Special HQ Preview tasting for some proposed menu items. Â We ordered several items, mostly from the small plates selections which are our favorites. Â I have to say overall they could put any of these on the menu and we'd be happy.
I started out with a small plate spinach salad with berries, kiwi, hazelnuts and a poppyseed dressing. Â It was very good, but maybe not so special. Â It did fill a salad void on their regular menu.
Next we tried the Asian Style Ribs which we all thought we very tender and the sauce was very good. Â The order came with 4 small ribs. Â I think maybe six would be better; and maybe some wet wipes!
My son had the Mac & Cheese which was unbelievably creamy, cheesy, bacony with a hint of green onion. Â He said he would easily order a double portion as an entree. Â We all tried it and agreed it was a favorite.
He also had the Chicken Cordon Bleu. Â He said the chicken was really tender and the outside was really crispy (one of his favorite textures). Â He said he would get it again.
My oldest daughter and I had both of the flatbreads. Â Hers was Italian sausage and mine was roasted vegetable. Â They were both great. Â The dough was just thin enough and the flavors were really tasty. Â Also the portion was just enough to satisfy without making you stuffed.
This brings me to my younger daughter's dinner and what I consider the only unsuccessful item we had. Â We all love a good veggie burger, so she was excited to try their new one. Â The texture was a little mushy and for this lover of seasoning, way too much curry powder. Â Don't get me wrong - I loves me some curry powder. Â I put it in my eggs, in my chicken salad and in a lot of my soup recipes; but this was all I could taste. Â That combined with the mush...just no. Â If they want a veggie burger on their menu, which I happen to think is a good idea - they need to rework this big time. Â (If you want a good veggie burger go to Eden Alley or Blanc Burgers & Bottles.)
Overall I would say they have developed some tasty items that we would easily order again on another visit.
If you have a lot of time on your hands and want to eat a little upscale in the Northland, go here. Â It always takes a while to get your food and drinks and sometimes I mean a long while. Â
My S-I-L and I frequent this place for their small plates and happy hour. Â The food is always savory and the menu does change from time to time. Â Our current favorite is the Thai Noodle Bowl and the Wild Mushroom Enchiladas. Â
At some point, Houlihans was voted best happy hour in the Northland which, I have a feeling, has to do with the under $7 liter pitcher of various Long Islands.  The apps are cheaper during said happy hour and it  allows being able to try new things.  They are always having some kind of special, (i.e. adding a free lobster tail to your steak, doing a three course meal on a discount, email coupons, etc.)
Last night the waiter tipped me off to a new flavor called Thai BBQ sauce, get it on the wings! Â Oooooo, good night! Â I put it on my Thai Noodle Bowl, delish! Â Our waiter was fantastic, suggesting things, checking on us, the whole 9, just be prepared for the wait.
Houlihan's is a lot easier to say than to spell. But that has nothing to do with the great restaurant in north Kansas City. When you walk in Houlihan's you see a great long bar with large glasses on the celling. It looks amazing.
When you think about any restaurant anywhere, you don't think about there coasters. At houlihan's that's the main attraction. Coaster McGee. He is a coaster with witty sayings on the bottom and saying to add him on facebook. I did add Coaster as a friend and he always has funny status' updates.
Enough about what you put your beer on for now. The food is great, they have a large variety of food so I usually get something different every time which is a big thing for me because I'm usually a person who always sticks with one dish at a restaurant the rest of my life.
After your done eating a great meal at Houlihan's you can do some shopping at the strip mall which is attached to it. It's at a great location in Kansas city so it is pretty close to everything.
houlihans bar scene is for cougars and divorced men.  the drinks are overpriced and the beer is warmish.  i remember it taking 24 minutes to get  a beer one time a few years ago.   i went in about two weeks ago for a free bday meal (sign up for their email club), and even tho it was free it wasn't good.  not worth my time or money.
Review Source:I remember this chain from its days on the Plaza and didn't expect much. Â However, I've been there twice on Saturday nights in the past month and have had delicious food both times. Â The appetizer of spinach dip with lavosh (I forget the actual name) was excellent and plentiful. Â The entree salad (Mandarin, I think it was called) was quite tasty. Â Presentation was a plus, with the salad served in this huge triangular white dish. Â
Sitting on the patio was pleasant since the evening air was cool; however, the ambiance factor is rather low outside due to the parking lot and busy roads nearby.  Other than around the bar in the front, the restaurant seems rather dark and cold.
The very best  part about going to Houlihan's is that it isn't busy on a Saturday night-- no wait!  On the other side of I-29 at the Zona Rosa complex, I know that we would have had to wait for a table. Â
This Houlihan's is kind of tucked in the back of the Boardwalk Shopping Center, rather forgotten by the crowd and pretty well hidden from view.
My friend was intrigued by their "bed-head" brunch advertisement.  She said that it is hard to find a good place North of the River to take her family for Sunday brunch and thought that Houlihan's might be a good choice.
