If you love craft beer and live in Lower Bucks County, the Hulmeville Inn is the place to be.
They have an excellent tap list with one offering on the beer engine at all times. Also, they regularly use their Randall to infuse beers with additional flavors. Their food is great bar fare and their wings are very good.
There are many reviews complaining about the smoking, but recently, the owner installed smoke eaters and changed out the standard ceiling fans with the air filter type. So, the smoke issue has been reduced greatly.
For a great place to hang out with some terrific beers, you can't go wrong with the 'Ville!
I had the misfortune of not discovering the Hulmeville until I had been living in the area for at least four years. Oh, the wasted opportunities. Regardless, I try to make it to the Hulmeville at least once a week.
First, the beer: the selection is, without a doubt, one of the best in the area. If you live in the 'burbs and don't want to make the drive into the city to find a decent selection, this is the place for you. There are 19 taps here, including one for casks, that are constantly rotated. Want something brewed locally? The Hulmeville will have you covered. In the mood for a Stout/IPA/Belgium/Imperial something or another? Done. Friends still haven't discovered or learned to appreciate the complexities of craft beer? They serve Miller Light too. CO2 accident took out your arm and now you're scared of taps? As of this review, the Hulmeville has 61 types of bottled and canned beer.
Second, the food: The food can be summed up in a word: Meh. Â I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered here and everything has been fresh and made to order. You have your usual bar food staple of burgers, wraps, sandwiches, cheese steaks, etc. It's decent, if a little boring, but not what I come back for. I do recommend the homemade chili though.
Third, the staff: The staff is great. I hadn't been visiting the Hulmeville for more than a couple of weeks before my usual bartender, Jackie, made me feel like a regular. Our drinks have always been kept refilled, our orders taken promptly and the bill processed quickly when asked. Even when it gets busy I've never felt like I've had to wait long to place or get an order.
While I think the Hulmeville is a five star place, it gets four because they allow smoking. I don't have anything against the bars decision to allow smoking nor do I against those who chose to smoke. It is still annoying though and limits when I can go. So long as you can look past this or are not bothered too greatly by it, the Hulmeville Inn is still a great beer bar.
I would be lying if I said that the location of my current home's proximity to the Hulmeville didn't factor in to my decision to buy it. Easily one of the best bars in Bucks County. If you think Isaac Newtown's is better, that's only because you haven't been to the Hulmeville. The place simply has it all: great selection of craft beer with prices, alcohol percentage and tapping date listed, cheap Lager and Miller Lite pitchers, lots of TVs to watch the game, good music selection, two pools tables, good bar food, darts and friendly bar tenders. The only reason why I'm only giving 4 stars is that they permit smoking, otherwise it's definitely a 5 star bar.
Review Source:Decent selection of beer for the area but I have been places that have a wider variety. The food was ok but did nothing to knock my socks off and make me want to come back for more. The real downside for me, a non-smoker, (keep in mind most of my friends smoke so I am around it all the time) is they allow smoking and I left smelling like an ashtray.
Review Source:Great place... really good local beer selection that rotates based on the season, etc. Bartenders are all great. Pool tables, bowling game, a couple other game machines too.
I consider it my local even if I am not a regular!
Only downfall... sooooo smoky, you come home reeking of it; but the place itself is a good one!!
If you love dive bars, this is the place for you! The bar sits in a quaint inn-looking building. Â The beer selection is AMAZING and REASONABLE! On a random Saturday afternoon I will come here with my boyfriend and sample their beers on tap. Â They will give you a flight of about 5 beers for a couple bucks. Â It's a great way to taste new things while having a fun, relaxing time. Â It's a good place to watch a game when you want to be in the ambiance and excitement of other people but don't much about the score. Â The tv's are not too great and it is tiny. Â they also have pool tables and dart boards which is fun with a group of friends. Â Overall I love this place. Â The only bummer is that smoking is allowed. Â Despite the "SmokeEater" I still come out reeking of cigarettes and cold beer!
Review Source:I just went there for the first time today for lunch. I was only able to sample a small portion of the menu, but what I had was good. The fried hotdog wanton wrap things were really good. Tasty dog with great texture. I also had their loaded quesadilla which was solid. Not anything to write home about, but definitely solid. Both items were very well prepared which is nice. I tried their house hot sauce and I gotta say it was pretty darn good. Definitely different but in good ways. I started putting the hot sauce on the quesadilla and that took it from solid to really good. Now this place seems to be know for it's beer selection, but I didn't try any, but I do know good beer and they definitely have a really good selection. I'll have to go back and check out their beer sometime. Regarding the smoky comments I've read, either the comments are totally overblown or I just got lucky because there was no smoke problem when I was there. Cool place, check it out.
Review Source:I love the Hulmeville. Love, love LOVE it!
It's a dive bar, it's dirty, and it has it's own odor, and I love all of those things about it. Something about the consistent familiarity of the place really does it for me. The bartenders have been the same since I started going there years ago, the regulars are still the regulars, and the beer is still cold an delicious. I'm not kidding about the odor, it's like a mix of stale beer and cigarettes, which sounds gross, but you really do grow to love it.
In all honesty their food isn't bad either. I love the fact that they serve pierogies, and they make them really really well. I'm sure they're the frozen pierogies you can buy at the supermarket, but they cook them with peppers and onions here and they are delicious! I'm Italian, not Polish, so if you're Polish and want to hate on me for liking the pierogies the Irish bartenders fry up for me, go on and hate, because I think they are DELICIOUS! Their fries are really good too! I actually can't complain about any of their food.
The beer selection is huge. The staff are all really nice and friendly, and for that matter so are the people who go there.
It gets the 4 starts for beer and grungy-yet-comfortable atmosphere. Â Always a great tap list, and prices are reasonable.
The food is...meh..they have a deep fryer and they buy shit from a grocery store and cook it. If you expect nothing more, you'll be happy.
The smoking status of this bar is somewhat lamentable, as the heavy stench of smoke makes it hard to fully appreciate a beer (you can't really smell the beer or anything, plus you leave smelling like an ashtray). Â But it's a fun place, and I love coming here on weekdays to get some work done and just people-watch (always an eclectic crowd).
Just note it gets really crowded fri and sat night - its the "go to" place for young adults in lower bucks...not really my scene, but if you want a beer those nights its not terrible.
Plus, they fill GROWLERS!
For their beer selection - 5 Stars, hands down. They have everything you're not going to find at any other local bar around town.
The Hulmeville is nice - but if you are a non-smoker - it can get so smokey your eyes start to water. I completely appreciate that people can still smoke in certain bars - but I've seen places take care of ventilation/air filtration better.
Skip their quizo games - cheating on cell phones is the worst I've ever seen (and I'm a quizo regular around Philly.) so there's not much point.
That being said - the beer selection still has me going back - take that as you will (they've got great beer that rivals Philly if you're not in the mood to drive.)
I finally made it over for a late lunch at the Hulmeville Inn. The Hulmeville is an old Inn that boasts a great tap selection, and unlike most establishments also permits smoking.
Beer wise this place gets extra points for having a beer engine. The selection ranges from good local microbrews from Yards and Victory, to some pretty obscure Belgian Seasonal. I was able to try both the Yards Love Stout ( a great version of an Oyster Stout) and the Yards ESB on Hand Pump.
The food menu is small, with the usual pub menu suspects showing up including wings, burgers and sandwiches. However, one of the unique dishes they serve up are soft pretzels covered in different toppings. I had a crab and cheddar soft pretzel that was a cheesy crabby decadent offering that went very well with the beer.
The Hulmeville is a friendly local bar with a local clientele that all appreciate good beer. Its a great place to stop by, have a beer or two and talk to some real friendly people.
What? Â Whaaaat? Â WHAAAT??? Â
How did Hulmeville come to be, I wonder? Â By "come to be" I mean, arrange a draft and bottled beer list to rival Monk's cafe or Eulogy in Philly, and GingerMan in New York City. Â All I'm sayin is, they have some damn good connections, or, more importantly, they have some DAMN good beer. Â
Whenever I hand my laptop over to my boyfriend, it comes back to me with the welcome page of Beer Advocate open, a website that reviews and rates all the greatest beers in the world...kind of like yelp but not with food. Â Anyway, I started looking at the website enough to recognize the fact that the beers rated near the top of the list (meaning the top 10 in the world) are constantly showing up on the taps at Hulmeville! Â And HOW could it get better? Â Let's see....their prices are Pennsylvania prices, so they can't get any cheaper, or they'd be paying you to drink there, and while that would be really REALLY cool, I'll settle for going to drink on Monday nights when they sell their microbrews at 1.25 off per legit 12 oz. pour. Â ALSO, they have bar trivia!!! Â YAAAAY!!!! Â So I can learn about how squid have 10 tentacles, win free coupons to drink more, WHILE drinking incredible beer, playing pool, and smoking a cigar. Â OK, so I don't smoke cigars, but if you want to you can have one! Â
Impressive. Â Most impressive.
Easily my favorite bar. Outstanding draft selection and rotation, solid bar food (I live for the buffalo garlic wings), and great specials; 3 dollar cheesesteaks on Sundays (and all the NFL games), 1.25 off microbrews and half price wings on Monday, etc. Service is something I really notice at bars and here it's solid. Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive. If you enjoy great beers this is a must visit.
Review Source:I Â am reviewing this place as a nondrinking lunch experience.
Though I would give this place a one star if it wasn't for the beer. I was there for lunch on Friday and I didn't drink but I did have my tongue hanging out wishing I could have some beer because the beer list is fabulous! So I am giving it an extra star just for the beer - which I coudn't have.....if that makes sense....
We walked in and the bartender immediately told us that she was the only one serving. That was kind of a turnoff and if we hadn't already spent 20 minutes getting there, we would have turned around. The place had pretty many people there. The bartender was very nice though and was working hard to serve everyone. The food was just OK and it took almost an hour to get it from the time we ordered it. That's way too long for lunch. Won't be going back for lunch. Like everyone else who has reviewed the inn, it is still smoking and you do smell like an ashtray coming out. That sucked but I knew that going in so I can't complain too much.
I would definitely not recommend this place for a non-drinking lunch. It was below average in all areas. If I was there on a Friday or Saturday night, my review could change.
The Hulmeville Inn rocks. Â Yes, it's one of the best craft beer bars around. Â Excellent selection, plus they sell and fill growlers. Â (The new growlers are awesome) There are some regular beers, but a lot of the beer selection changes as the kegs kicks. Â Jeff, the owner, really is a cool dude.
The food is ok. Â For the most part it's regular bar food, but it's made well. Â The menu does change from time to time. Â Their website has the beer lists and menu.
The only real drawback of the hulmeville inn is that it's still a smoking bar. Â So no kids allowed and you'll come home smelling like an ashtray. Â It's completely worth it though.
Forget about getting a spot in the parking lot as well. Â It's usualy full, but there is parking on the street, so it's no big deal.
The Hulmeville Inn is also the home of the ALEiens Homebrew Club, as Jeff L.(not the same Jeff who owns the place) pointed out. Â I'm a member of that club, so I'm guaranteed to show up there at least once a month. Â The meetings are the last Tuesday of the month though, I dunno why Jeff said Friday. Â The meetings are held upstairs, and you can find more info at the link that Jeff provided.
I love the Hulmeville Inn. The beer selection is plentiful and forever changing, the food is great, and the beer events are fabulous. The Hulmeville is the home of the ALEiens Homebrew Club (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ALEiens.com&s=e9e08600cb303c63f74c26fc5c66184ab9ecdd48f6cb0c51e55043787d6598f4" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.ALEiens.com</a>). They meet there the last Friday of every month.
Review Source:You have to realize what you're walking into when you go here. It's a bar that offers pub food for most of the day and night. The food is actually pretty good!! The bartenders will absoutely make your drinks right and even pour their speciality beers in the proper glasses! People that complain about the cigarette smoke have to realize what they are walking into. The prices are great, people are friendly simply because many locals hang out there.
Review Source:Stopped in here briefly just to check it out. They have to lose a star because they still, even after the rest of PA has abandoned smoking, allow smoking. However, 4 stars for the tap and bottle selection. If you want a great beer bar, this is the one. The atmosphere is, well, smoky. There is a lot of wood, it looks like an authentic bar, and as I said the beer selection is phenomenal. I'm looking forward to going back, but I wouldn't bring my wife there.
Review Source:The Hulmeville Inn is one of the best local bars in the area. If you start to frequent this bar once or even five times a week, then you start to see the same people. Overtime you know the locals and you can become a local at this great bar. The bartenders do a great job and are cool. The food is good. This place has some of the best cheesesteaks outside Philly. This bar has some of the best beer selections I know. Take your friends here and they will have a great time.
The Hulmeville Inn has two billiards tables, a dart board, a jukebox, and a fountain outside. The owner has put money into this bar and it shows. This bar would have received 5 stars, but they still allow smoking. I hate every time I leave this place myself and my clothes smell like fried food and smoke. I have to clean my clothes to get the smell out after I leave this place. It is time get with the new and ban smoking like the rest of the bars.
If you're 20-something, live in Levittown or Langhorne or thereabouts, and you're too lazy to drive to Philly, then the Hulmeville is the place to be on a weekend night. Â In my case, I date a guy from Levittown, and he and his friends love this place. Â So I tagged along when he and I started dating, and the place really has grown on me over the past year.
This place is historic, as well as fun. Â Located on Trenton Road in historic Hulmeville, PA, Â the Hulmeville Inn has been in business for over two hundred years. Â Originally, it was a hotel and stage coach stop for those traveling between Trenton and Philadelphia. Â There is still a hitching post and a stone step that was used to board the carriages located on the property. Â During Prohibition, the Inn operated as an ice cream parlor. Â Now it's a great place to grab a beer and watch some sports.
I like this place because it's spacious (yet tough to get a table if you get there late on a weekend night), has pool tables, and has a pretty good beer selection for a place in the 'burbs. Â In fact, I can always count on them offering Dirty Hoes because they always have Hoegaarden and Framboise on tap (and I like Dirty Hoes... no, not that kind, the drink, silly!). Â They change their beer selection to keep things fresh every once in a while, so check out what they have on tap on their website before you go. Â They've also got bar food - fries and such. Â Their wings are pretty good.
Usually, this place is pretty much a townie bar during the week, but it becomes 20-something central on the weekends, with a fun crowd and good juke box music. Â You can always find the random sketchy old dudes at the bar on the weekend, though, which reminds you that you're still near Levittown. Â They just add local flavor to the place and keep it from becoming too much of a hipster hang-out.
The Hulmeville bartenders are always really nice, and the ID-checker guys at the front door get to know the regulars after a while. Â I like having people know me at businesses that I frequent. Â I just don't like getting hit on by the sketchy old dudes at the bar (some have said some really GROSS things to me while I tried to order a drink...). Â If you're a cute girl, be sure to order your beer at the other end of the bar from them.
The prices are pretty reasonable, and you can also catch the Phillies game or whatever sports game on their really nice tv's. Â I also noticed that the owners constantly upgrade the place to keep it fresh. Â The decor has changed little by little since I started going there a year ago. Â Oh, and the pitchers have a compartment in the middle where the bartender puts some ice, so your beer stays cold until you finish the pitcher. Â That's always appreciated.
They are open seven days a week from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Â
My only complaint is that the Hulmeville is outside the Philly city limits, so the smoking ban is not in effect there. Â Thus, I've had difficulty breathing and leave smelling like an ash tray. Â Since the place isn't huge and it gets really crowded on the weekends, and since I don't think they have a state-of-the-art ventilation system, it gets WAY more smoky in there than your average bar that still allows smoking. Â In fact, it's so bad that I've been avoiding going there very often since the Philly bars went smoke-free. Â If the entire state ever institutes a ban, though, I'll be back in the Hulmeville at least once a week, like when I first started hanging there. Â In the meantime, I'll still go, just not as often as I'd like because I value my asthmatic lungs. Â If you can take the smoke, though, check it out. Â This place rocks.
