For me the gold standard in roast beef sandwiches is Kelly's on Revere Beach in Massachusetts. Or the original Nick's in South Philly (but its been decades since I've been, so I don't know for sure anymore). However I got wind of this place by someone who I met in Maryland, where I live. And I was passing thru the area.
I read the Yelp reviews and gave it a shot.
Yeah, decorwise you are not going there for ambience. It's a big friendly place with an ample bar and plenty of tables. If it's St. Patty's Day and you want to be with the proper corned beef and cabbage set then you are home.
The guy from New Hope who didn't like the guy in shorts didn't talk to the guy in shorts. His name is John and he knows from good food and service. They also have Guinness and Yards on tap so beer snobs don't haveta go home disappointed, much.
My roast beef sandwich was piled high on a fresh kaiser roll. The beef was properly seasoned, tender and juicy without needing to dip, as New Hopeman had ta. I took a roast turkey home for my best girl and she pronounced it "damn good". She shared it with her teenage boy and he said "where'd ya get this? It's good" and then ate it up before she could get it back.
The young lady at the bar was actually interested in providing good service and offered a welcoming attitude. I think New Hope Dude is perhaps unaccustomed to such things or too young to have known it elsewhere. So maybe he misread the signs.
I really prefer my RB thin sliced and rare, this ain't it but it was what it was and what it was , was very good...bring cash money, no CC's but they have an ATM inside.(fees?)
I'll be back!!!!
As far as bars go, this place is about as average as they come. As for their food, there is nothing average about them. Delicious roast beef sandwiches, great wings, pretty much everything I've ever ordered was fantastic. I've been frequenting this place for years and only recently tried their roasted turkey sandwich; I almost shed a tear it was that good. Don't forget to bring cash because they don't take cards(ATM in house). If you're in the neighborhood give them a try, you won't regret it.
