For me the gold standard in roast beef sandwiches is Kelly's on Revere Beach in Massachusetts. Or the original Nick's in South Philly (but its been decades since I've been, so I don't know for sure anymore). However I got wind of this place by someone who I met in Maryland, where I live. And I was passing thru the area.
I read the Yelp reviews and gave it a shot.
Yeah, decorwise you are not going there for ambience. It's a big friendly place with an ample bar and plenty of tables. If it's St. Patty's Day and you want to be with the proper corned beef and cabbage set then you are home.
The guy from New Hope who didn't like the guy in shorts didn't talk to the guy in shorts. His name is John and he knows from good food and service. They also have Guinness and Yards on tap so beer snobs don't haveta go home disappointed, much.
My roast beef sandwich was piled high on a fresh kaiser roll. The beef was properly seasoned, tender and juicy without needing to dip, as New Hopeman had ta. I took a roast turkey home for my best girl and she pronounced it "damn good". She shared it with her teenage boy and he said "where'd ya get this? It's good" and then ate it up before she could get it back.
The young lady at the bar was actually interested in providing good service and offered a welcoming attitude. I think New Hope Dude is perhaps unaccustomed to such things or too young to have known it elsewhere. So maybe he misread the signs.
I really prefer my RB thin sliced and rare, this ain't it but it was what it was and what it was , was very good...bring cash money, no CC's but they have an ATM inside.(fees?)
I'll be back!!!!
As far as bars go, this place is about as average as they come. As for their food, there is nothing average about them. Delicious roast beef sandwiches, great wings, pretty much everything I've ever ordered was fantastic. I've been frequenting this place for years and only recently tried their roasted turkey sandwich; I almost shed a tear it was that good. Don't forget to bring cash because they don't take cards(ATM in house). If you're in the neighborhood give them a try, you won't regret it.
Review Source:My husband and I were running errands near Oxford Valley Mall and decided that we wanted sandwiches for dinner. We are not from the area but my husband had been here once before and said that their hot roast-beef sandwiches were killer. Â He warned me that it is by no means a fancy place, but that the food, prices and friendly people were great. Â He was spot on! Â I love it here! Â They have a man that cuts the roast beef right up front. Â Our sandwiches were fresh, tasty and piled high with roast beef - a little too much roast beef for me but my husband gladly ate my extras. I even contemplated writing in to Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives about this place - with all do respect. Â It's great food, great people, great prices and a laid- back atmosphere. Â Go there!
Review Source:Tucked in a random strip mall by the Oxford Valley Mall - if you're looking for a great hot sandwich and a beer - you cannot go wrong at Sandy's. The prices are right on food and beer both.
I've never met a sandwich there I didn't like. The Roast Pork is my favorite.
Big sandwich, pickle, and chips.
They make killer Poutine there too!
They're cash only - and the parking lot can be overflowing at times - mild inconveniences these, when there's their Roast Pork sandwich to be had!
We stop here frequently...monthly at least.  Being creatures of habit, he always  orders a roast beef "sandywich" and I get the roast pork.  Both are out of this world.  The rolls are nothing to rave about, but always soft and fresh.  This place has been cooking their meat the same way for years, and it is always delicious.
Great place to stop for a  cold beer and a hot sandwich!
Must have been a really off day, because everyone else seems to like it.  My sandwich was clearly substandard, and not what other customers are describing. When I ordered the RB sandwich, some guy came out in shorts and a pair of Chucks, and sliced off a very few chunks of thick, over-cooked, dried-out beef and put it in a Kaiser roll.  I was stunned because of how unappetizing it looked.  The woman bartender must have known it wasn't up to par, because she kept coming over to ask how it was.  It was only edible after dunking the meat chunks in the aus jus  (or whatever the spelling is) to make it more moist.  Any place that features Bud and Busch is off my list on general principles.  Not going back there unless you're buying.  Yes, I'm direct, but that's what I got.
Review Source:After frequenting this place with a friend of mine, I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite local bars/restaurants. Â As the name suggests, Sandy's Beef & Ale offers a variety of simple bar-type foods. Â Burgers and fries are ommon fare, although they really shine when it comes to their sandwiches. Â The absurdly named "Sandywich", is the house special. Â It consists of a kaiser roll piled with freshly carved roast beef. Â The owner of the establishment carves the meat at a small station near the bar, and the meat is always fresh and hot. Â Each sandwich meal comes with a few pickle slices and a handful of chips. Â Fries must be ordered separately in curly or standard format. Â Although the "Sandywich" is my personal favorite item on the menu, I have strayed occasionally to try some of their other sandwiches. Â The chicken cordon bleu sandwhich is a rare and exceptional treat, and the chicken parmigiana sandwhich is pretty standard. Â
The setting is typical of any bar: Â low lighting, multiple televisions, plaques and signs adorning the walls, etc. Â Unfortunately, I have been thoroughly disappointed with the music selection on a number of occasions, although this is more to the fault of the patrons rather than the staff. Â
Service is mediocre, but has, on occasion, been moderately improved. Â
The pricing is fair, and the food is great. Â If you are in the Langhorne area by yourself, or with a group of friends, Sandy's Beef & Ale comes highly recommended.
As a bar, the place is average at best. Â Their specials are lousy and their average patron older and/or loud and obnoxious. Â Smoking is welcome (edit: obviously not since the PA smoking ban).
Their sandwiches though....to die for. Â The best roast pork and chicken cordon bleu sandwiches I've ever had and their fries are well above average. Â My father says its among the best roast pork he's had (roast pork his favorite sandwich) and he knows food and has eaten at countless places. Â The pork is sliced right there behind the bar so you can watch, and the same guy does it all the time. Â He seems to enjoy it. Â A friend who's tastes I trust says that the chicken parm sandwich is top-notch. Â I brought coworkers here on lunch breaks when I interned at a business nearby and from what I've been told, many became regulars.
It's very easy to pass by when traveling on either bordering main road. Â It's in the strip mall on the northeast corner of Woodbourne Road and Maple Avenue. Â You can't see it from Woodbourne and it's very hard to spot from Maple because the strip mall is elevated above the street and obscured by trees. Â The best way to get there is from the loop road that surrounds the Oxford Valley Mall (Middletown Blvd) and turning down the exit road beyond where the old Best used to be (across from the Strawbridges/Boscov's) that empties onto Maple. Â Pull into the last stip mall entrance on the right before Maple Ave and look for it.
