Had a great time with friends, service was very slow...It took way too long to get our food and drinks...Checked with waitress about our drinks and was told they were "making them" really you're making wine and beer. Food was good, one thing I didn't like was after the food was made at table side, they cleaned up right away with a smelly wet sponge. Lots of smelly smoke while we were eating. Will go back because of the food.. Maybe next time the service will be better. Â Great place to go with a group of friends or a large family!
Review Source:I've been here a couple times with my husband and both times it's was great! The filet mignon just melts in your mouth, so good. The difference here too is they give you noodles as well, the first teppan place where i've gotten that. Highly recommend for a night out with friends or family :) Also, prices are really reasonable too.
Review Source:I went here for the first time with my boyfriend yesterday and we ordered the teriyaki chicken and veggie dish. The food was amazing...melted in my mouth and the sauce was perfect (not too much or too little)!! The server was very entertaining but was also good about letting us enjoy a romantic evening together without interrupting us every 5 minutes. We will definitely be back:)
Review Source:Please dont ever go here, unless you're having too good of a day and life is just going too well. If that is the case, a meal here will definitely knock you down a couple of notches and you will leave irritated, angry, and probably still hungry, as was the case with us...
Friends/Coworkers Birthday. A group of 9 of us decided to celebrate at this God-Forsaken place. We walk in, find our own seating, seat ourselves and the wait begins. There seem to be 3 people on staff, plus 1 senile old man who must have gotten lost & wandered in there, because when I ask him questions, he seems surprised and shuffles off, without a response. No one knows why he's there or why he is rearranging chopsticks 12hrs/day.
Anyway, back to my point - 3 people on staff & 1 occupied table (us). You think they would be excited to have customers. You think they would cater to us and make sure that, as we are their only means of income for this particular lunch hour, they squeezed as much $ out of us as possible, or at least given us a pleasurable experience so that we would come back. Clearly they dont understand the concept of "repeat business". We may as well have been invisible.
Finally an old lady (possibly the owner of aforementioned old man), comes to the table, and automatically seems annoyed with us, like we hit her child and woke her up from a nap.... We explain that we have 1hour to celebrate the birthday lunch, and that we need to be in and out as soon as possible. 10mins later, the menus arrive. 10mins later she meanders on over to see if we want to order. Surprisingly, we do. (Time Check-30mins in). In the interest of time, we order everything at once - drinks, edamame, entrees. She brought 1 drink out at a time. This took 15mins. I reminded her about the edamame again. and she disappears. (Time Check-45mins, we have to be back at work in 15). 5mins later, out comes the edamame. I send it back because its cold.
We say "we do not have time. please bring our food to go. We should never have come here. We will never come here again. Just bring us the food and the checks".
10minutes later, some the food comes out. Not in boxes. Not with boxes. Not with checks. We should be back at work now. Lunch hour is over. Again, we ask for boxes, checks, and the remaining 3 dishes (birthday girls included) all while stressing urgency, as we are now late. I asked for the manager. He shrugged and turned away when i explained the situation to him. They are good listeners here. Clearly.
Finally, 2 of the remaining dishes come out, the birthday girls is not among them. When we ask where it is, our waitress explains that they are re-doing it now because they messed up. At this point, we just need to leave. I am not concerned about payment. Frankly, i think i should we should be the ones getting paid, as they are single-handedly responsible for ruining our office birthday celebration, plus we should be reimbursed for our time and frustration.
We finally pay the checks and get out of there. The birthday girl ate scraps from other peoples plates, we did not get any ice-cream, candle, birthday acknowledgement. After expressing our discontentment with their services, we were shrugged off. I even told them I would yelp about this horrible experience. We were 35 mins late getting back to the office.
AND THE PLACE SMELLS LIKE URINE AND BLEACH.
I had to report that Ichibiri has gone way down in appeal. The last time I was there my food was inedible. I took two friends with and they felt the same. we all had the Sushi lunch, which I had ordered for years. The sushi looked like it was made by a mid western house wife for the first time. The fish was not fresh. The rice tasted odd and the soup was watered down. It was disappointing but it was also SAD. Having eaten at Ichibiri for almost 20 years it has become a part of my life. I don;t think I will ever go back. It feels heartbreaking. Time to retire guys.
Review Source:Hadn't been in the restaurant in about a year. Â Last time was kinda sketchy... Â Went in today and it smelled like a wet dog. Â The waiter was fighting with one of the owners. Â Sat at the bar and ordered some nigiri and an "OC Roll" (basically a California roll with tobiko on top - their idea of a custom roll!). Â It wasn't awful, but at the same time it wasn't great. Â Basically it tasted about the same as what you might find at those pop-up sushi counters at the Albertson's up at the top of Pico, except a little LESS fresh. Â I couldn't get passed the smell though... I ruined my lunch.
Review Source:The food has gotten worse and worse since we have been coming. We are locals and used to frequent the place a lot. The service is slower than slow. The portions are smaller and smaller and the quality is almost non existent. The decor is awful the bathrooms smell putrid! The building in general is dirty and old. It could be wonderful but until they get  a new owner that is not going to happen.
Review Source:I love this place! Ichibiri's has several teppan tables that serve huge portions and a sushi bar with an ocean view. The seafood salad sushi plate is my favorite, and will often order it ahead of time so I can pick it up and go eat on the sand. They have friendly service and can usually find something to please everyone in the group. Good times!
Review Source:I came here to celebrate my friend's b-day. The place was half empty for a Saturday night which is not a good sign. We ordered the california roll for appetizer which was OK. However, the entrees were nasty. I ordered chicken and beef teriyaki. The quality was not fresh, the vegetables were overcooked and the fried rice was too salty. The restaurant itself looked old and worn down. The service was slow and not impressive. We should have gone to Matsu in HB. Very disappointed and will not come back.
Review Source:Felt like Sushi and was looking for a casual cool place but I am just not into eating dinner in a strip mall, so off to Ichi's. Sat at the Sushi Bar, nice view of the ocean. Food was good and everyone was friendly. Was it the best no, but the Fish was very fresh. 3 rolls, Octopus, 4 beers=$40.00
Review Source:I'm surprised at all the negative reviews of this place! I came here three times during my 10-day vacation - twice for sushi and once for hibachi. Both times we went for sushi, we sat at the sushi bar and were really pleased. The sushi was fresh and delicious, and the sushi chefs were very nice. One of them talked with us the entire time we sat there, and when I mentioned I'd never tried octopus, he gave us some for free. Then, he gave us a free bottle of cold sake to take home with us. I've been to Taka-O in town, as well, and I think the sushi here at Ichibiri is far superior and the service is much friendlier.
The hibachi was ok, but I wasn't blown away. I'd go back again for the sushi, for sure!!
Can't beat eating fresh sushi while looking out at the Pacific.
Our family took us to this humble little venue where we sat at the sushi bar giving our orders directly to the sushi chef. I enjoyed a delicious plum wine with my edamame, eel rolls, mango rolls, and hawaiian rolls. I couldn't quite fit anything else in, although I really wanted to!
Friendly and excellent staff, and sitting right at the bar was the perfect way to take in a view of the ocean/beach while dining on its delicious offerings.
We've been here a few times over the years, mainly for the show (typical Tappan grill... nothing super exotic, but fun and safe fair for the family members visiting). I am a sushi lover and pretty picky, thus never venturing into the deep confines of their sashimi... more like hovering around a hand roll for an app. Â Hubs, he's not a fan of fish... at all. So for my birthday the compromise was Ichibiri.
They get the 2 stars because the Tappan grill has a decent selection (as far as the lower expectation when it comes to Tappan grills) and they give you enough food for your $$. (Side note... what's up with the noodles... anyway) It's dirty and needs to be cleaned up... Saying that I can't believe I ordered sushi.
The service was the worst we have ever had out of the few times we have been here. Â (It was a Tuesday night... not a lot of people, we sat at the grill so the 4 other people could eat...) Several times I was informed that I would be waiting for a very long time for anything from the sushi bar.
I started with the sashimi platter... (why I ask) not only was it gross, the pieces weren't cut all the way through, there was skin left on it... she offered to take it off the bill (we accepted)... had a hand roll, it had cream cheese that had the metal from the package left on it... it wasn't even what I ordered... need I go on? I think not. Â
Now deemed icky berries....
Used to bring the kids here for their birthdays. Â Always was OK at the Teppan Bar. Â Noticed it was getting sort of long in the tooth. Â Went back last week and was shocked. Corners cut everywhere. Â Dirty. Â Food was terrible and the staff was indifferent. Â Won't be back and bet they won't be around long.
Review Source:The food is OK at best, not nearly as good as other similar restaurants in south OC. The Chefs that we have experienced during our 4 visits all appear to be Hispanic vs. Japanese. Â Not very authentic/talented if you are looking for that part of the experience. Â The Chefs that we had did not know how to do a flaming Volcano so the kids were very disappointed. Â For some reason the restaurant always smells like some type of cleaning product or paint when we go. Â The decor is very outdated and needs a remodel. Â The bathrooms are gross and this always makes me wonder. Â If the bathrooms are not nice and the public sees them, what does the kitchen look like?
Review Source:I have been coming here since I was a young kid and i am extremely disappointed in the direction the restaurant has taken.... spaghetti noodles....really. If i wanted Italian food i would go to an Italian restaurant. I am upset that i can no longer eat at one of my childhood favorite restaurants. Clean the place up and get your act together. so sad
Review Source:If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Â Disgusting. Â I actually feel sick, not to mention that it ruined Father's Day. Â Did you ever go somewhere and think, we should leave but your feet didn't find the door?I had one of those moments but I didn't listen to my gut and I should have. First of all, the bathroom was so disgusting that I had to cover my mouth so I wouldn't vomit from the overwhelming smell of Lysol mixed with mold and stank air. The carts they bring to the table are filthy-stained and nasty. Â The food-where do I begin? Â Fried rice with frozen peas and carrots. Spaghetti with soy-sauce. Â Rubbery little shrimp. Â I literally was thinking "I hope we all don't get sick." Â Plastic everything and the cheapest silverware-not a chopstick in the place. We spent 160+ for 5 of us - and that included 2 beers , so you do the math. Â 160 for a horrible meal and a ruined Father's Day. Well, lesson learned. Â When you sense that it's going to be horrible and the bathroom confirms it...leave.
Review Source:I have been coming to Ichibiri for a few years now. Definitely a teppan restaurant. I wouldn't come here for just sushi, as there are far better sushi places in south OC.
San Clemente location definitely has more charm than the Dana location and the staff is VERY friendly. I always recommend the new York steak or the filet. The pennysaver also puts out great 2 for 1 coupons every once in a while!
Solid location - I'm rounding up from 3.5 stars.
Why? Every time we come to this place we have a solid meal. As opposed to the Dana Point/Laguna Beach location, the service here is excellent, and the chefs are fun and attentive.
I am not judging this on the quality of the sushi, as I wouldn't eat here if I just wanted sushi.
The Mahi-Mahi is always top notch, and their vegetables are awesome - they have recently upped the broccoli element and toned down the disgusting cooked carrot component.
I didn't feel like this place was dirty...I have never been to the bathroom here, but judging the other reviews, it looks like I'll be holding it until we get home.
I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars.
It was here I first tried sushi and the patio has an ocean view, so there is a sentimental part of me that wants to go 4 stars.
But then, there is the other part of me that has had several teppan grill over-salted lackluster no-fun chef experiences as well.
Hmm... tough call.
Am so sad to hear this place will be closing... Â Ichibiri's has been a North Beach mainstay for as long as I can remember. Â
Food quality is excellent. Â Teppan tables (although there is a sushi bar and regular seating area) are always fun and every chef that I've had there has been enthusiastic and lots of fun. Â Steak and scallops is my usual favorite and I have never left disappointed. Â
Much better than Benihana's! Â I really hope they'll relocate and continue satisfying the teppan cravings for the folks of San Clemente.
This place was recommended by friends so we decided to check it out. Its your usual japanese steakhouse with all the food cooked in front of you. Our cook was very entertaining. My favorite part was when he selected my girlfriend and I to catch shrimp from the grill in our mouths. He threw up the first piece and it nearly hit me in the eye. Totally bad toss. Then he threw one up to my girlfriend and she missed it. He threw the 3rd one and I caught it..got a standing ovation from the table and the chef continued cooking. The portions are big and the food is good. It is really close to the beach if you want to take a stroll down there after dinner. The parking lot is kind of small but there is plenty of parking around.
