First time at this establishment. The food was great, service was even better the outdoor seating was both pretty and well thought out. The waiter even brought us a desert on the house. One great thing about this plan is that they do not cook with butter or fry any of their dishes. Overall nice experience we will be back again.
Review Source:I ate hear this past Saturday night. Â I had been a long time ago, but had sat inside then. Â On this occasion, we had a larger party and sat outside. Â The atmosphere outside was romantic. Â Cute lights, swings that served as chairs and a water fountain. Â I had a frozen alcoholic drink made with mango and pineapple, it was delicious and they served it in a bigger pitcher which made it economical as well. I ordered a mango curry for my entree. Â It was delicious and reasonably priced. Â The Nan was also very good and they serve all the different styles of it on one plate, which is great for bigger parties. Â There was a belly dancer and henna artist on hand as well. Â I had a great time and highly recommend it.
Review Source:I had never been to an Indian restaurant, so I was a little out of my element. But the servers were very friendly. We sat in the back patio, which was a very nice looking area. My girlfriend LOVED the swing chairs. We got the naan bread basket, and it had several different flavors. I got Vindaloo Lamb curry. I've never had professionally-done curry, and I was a little intimidated since it was the spiciest curry listed, but it was amazing! Excellent flavor. I will definitely come back here.
Review Source:We went on Saturday night for a 7:45 PM reservation. Â Was a little late, due to construction/detour on the roads near the restaurant. Â Probably waited about 5 minutes or so to be seated in a little corner table in the room off of the bar area. Â Nicest decor of any indian restaurant I've ever been to. Â Service was a little slow, but didn't mind so much once the food started arriving. Â Food was great. Â Had samosas and two different naan breads to start. Â Lamb chop kabobs and chicken coconut curry for entrees. Â Too full for dessert. Â Would def. go again, if in the area.
Review Source:Let me start off by saying that I don't really love Indian food, but I do love India. So with that being said, I call this establishment pseudo Indian. Either way, it's delish. TUESDAY is where it's at because it's 50% off entrees! This is such a good deal. I love the kabobs (any of them are delish!) and you have to try the frozen mango coolada!!!!! Naan is so good (again not sure how authentic it is) and I also love the samosas. We have friends with dietary issues (gluten and dairy free) and this is a fabulous restaurant as many of their meals can be accomadated.
Review Source:Our server was one of the sweetest! Â Had dinner here on a Saturday evening around 7:30. Â We made reservations on Yelp/OpenTable 1/2 hour before arrival. Â As a tip, reserve 1/2 before arrival & there will most likely be a table ready for you when you arrive. Â In our example, the restaurant was filled when we arrived where there was about 4-5 parties waiting to be seated. Â Be Smaht, reserve a table!
Nonetheless, we were immediately seated in one of the rooms near the bar area. Â It was a quaint and romantic area. Â Our server quickly came over. Â He was rather busy but informed us he was running behind. Â When he did come over, he was truly great! Â
We ordered the Aloo Tiki, Samosas, Mango Frozen ALCOHOLIC drinks & garlic Nan for starters. Â This would have suffice as for our meals but we were living on the edge & decided to order an entree to share. Â Our tab was about $60..rather cheap for the amount of food and drinks!
On saturdays there is a dancer to entertain & work the crowds. Â Don't forget to mention the big screen that plays Bollywood movies! Â
Check out the murals in the bathroom! Â
Overall, if you like Indian food or spicy food, this will surely make you happy.
This place is just magical! Â Huge fan of the Mango drinks!!! Â After 2-3 carafes, you'll be feeling magical alright. Â If you're thinking of bringing a date here, ask to be seated in the rooms near the bar, as it is very intimate & sexy!!
Don't listen to the bad reviews on here, they are having a bad day!
Enjoy!!!
Worst indian restaurant ever.
Baked samosa made out of tortilla, no naan in buffet, jalapeño instead of green chilly basically they call themselves fusion of Indian and mexican and they actually give you worst of both worlds.
On top of that staff is damm rude, god knows how they get best food awards etc...
If you are looking for indian taste, just don't waste your time and money here.
Just try at your own risk.
Went there today for late lunch/early dinner (Linner? Dunch?) and had a very pleasant time. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I was in the mood for something light, so chose the grilled naan pizza with pesto, portobella mushrooms, and mozzarella, plus a grilled cantaloupe salad. (Grilled cantaloupe! Genius.) It was delicious and the portions surprisingly big -- I gladly took home my leftovers and ate them later that evening.
I'm not a big fan of Indian food typically, but I would go back for those dishes and am interested in trying other things on the menu!
We have been here 4 times and every time the food is amazing! They have a naan basket that has 4 or 5 different kinds, and there is something for everyone! I love the Chana Masala, I order it every time, and my Fiance always gets the Shahi Keer, its an Indain rice pudding that is amazing!!!!!
The staff is so friendly and they never rush us out, even on a busy Friday night!
Not to date myself but I have been dining at India, in some form and location, for 0ver 10 years. Â Have I ever had a bad meal? Â No. Â Bad service? Â Never. Â This establishment is one of Rhode Island's best. Â The food is always and consistently delicious. Â The service and the staff are attentive and courteous and efficient. Â The aesthetics of the restaurant are beautiful. Â From the front outdoor sidewalk area through the indoor dining room and even out to the back terrace with the swing seats. Â India, the owner, management and all the staff, do an exceptional job. Â I can not say enough good things about India except.....go and have a wonderful meal.
Review Source:This place is basically a bar with live entertainment of Indian dancers, loud music, enormous margaritas, and a giant screen playing Bollywood films. It felt like a frat party. Most of the clientele consists of white people who probably have never set foot in Kabob & Curry or Not Just Snacks. The waiter didn't really know anything about Indian cuisine. The pseudo-Indian entrees are expensive, and ours came out suspiciously quickly and were incredibly bland. The waiter also refused to write down our orders, almost screwed up both of our food orders, and got my beverage order wrong. If this is your scene, go for it. Not for us! Will not be returning.
Review Source:We have been to India Restaurant multiple times now and have not been disappointed. The service is great, the food is always delicious and the waiter remembered my hubby needs yogurt with his vindaloo (which is wonderful)! The live belly dancer is always entertaining and provides incentive for our teenage boys to join us in an evening out. Best yet, the prices are very reasonable!
If it is summertime, be sure to ask to sit outside in the back garden. It is beautiful and serene!
Tuesday's half price! This place is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Providence. The service is great and so is the food. Ambiance is nice as well. You can sit at the bar or in one of three different areas, 2 being a bit more private. Everything I have tried here has been excellent. The rice is not sticky, the portions are not small, and the price is right. You can get the chicken masala with a kale salad instead of rice, so don't be afraid to ask for alterations (kale salad is great, btw). The yogurt sauce is a must esp if you are ordering a spicy dish. They include pineapple or mango in the sauce, but you can ask for this to be eliminated (i always do). The naan (bread) comes in white or wheat form and both are great.
I wanted to list some of the dished I have had, but their site seems to be down...
Yummm went here again last weeekend and as good as I remember!
I got the sampler appetizer (not sure what it was called) but it had a kale salad, Indian-style nachos and samosas.
The kale salad was refreshing and light, the Indian style nachos were awesome. Lots of cilantro, yogurt sauce and pita chips. We ate everyyything!
For entrees I got Chicken Masala, it was so delicious. I got the garlic naan, and should of just got the naan and a side of masala sauce because its sooooo good together!
My friend got a sandwhich on naan with sirloin I believe. It was really, crisp and fresh.
I highly recommend India for people trying Indian for the first time. I've been to other places but this is the nicest decor, food and atmosphere. There was even a Bollwood movie playing!
Awesome awesome AWESOME food!! I really preferred the menu over buffet. The wait staff = super friendly and professional. I don't think you can go wrong whatever you pick. The decor is also really amazing. The outside looks kinda Mexican but no one cares cause again, the food is great :)
Portions are generous. Food can be adjusted for your ability to take on spice. Walked out of there stuffed!!
How have I not written a review for India yet? Â Shame on me.
India is a classic Indian restaurant nestled on the East Side of Providence near Blackstone Boulevard. Â The decor is beautiful and tasteful. Â They offer seating in the outdoor patio section, as well as tables for quiet corner conversations and tables in the middle of the dining area in the thick of it all. Â
They have a huge TV which is always playing Bollywood movies. Â Thursday night is Jazz night. Â Saturday and Sunday brunch if offered at a fixed price of $13.95 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Â India also has random musicians come in and play music from time to time; mostly Indian classical music.
There is a "bargain bar menu" which offers a wide variety of mouth-watering food options which can be ordered in the regular or promo size. Â It certainly is a great way to sample many different items on a budget. Â
Their menu options are endless and they even offer a vegan and gluten free menu as well.
Keep up the good work, India. Â I will forever be indebted to you for all of the wonderful cuisine you've given me over the years.
I considered myself a novice when it comes to Indian food, and until now I had never had bad or mediocre Indian food. Yes, I said UNTIL NOW.
The good: The space is beautiful, and I love the "booths" that are separated by drapes. Gorgeous! Service was excellent all around.
The bad: The food was disappointing. I wouldn't even come back for the $1 bar menu. If you order a drink $5 and up, you can order an appetizer for $1 for each drink (a few $$ more for fancier things). But almost all of the beers are under $5, and the cocktails are all sugary colored gimmicky drinks. Certainly not somewhere you go when you want a cocktail.
I had a flatbread pizza that was naan topped with pesto, mushroom & mozzarella. There was nothing particularly Indian about it other than the naan base, which really just made it taste like soggy pizza. Instead of the standard samosa, theirs are wrapped in a flour tortilla wrap and baked, which I thought was strange. The lentil soup was a huge bowl but it was flavorless. I also had a vegetable biryani was very good and spicy.
I noticed was that there weren't many Indian people there. Compare that to Rasoi, or the place on Wickenden where I always see a lot of Indian customers. While I don't believe in declaring things "authentic", I wish they would be a little more up front about their fusion style. Fusion can be aces, but in this case it's average. I came here because I had a gift certificate. With all of the Indian places to go to, I see no need to come back even though I still have another gift certificate remaining.
I'm always happy with the food at India. Â Service is usually good as well, and the movies and belly dancers help entertain while waiting for food. Â
I'm in love with their kale cucumber salad, but please note: the kale cucumber salad that comes with entrees is NOT the same one that comes with the veggie sampler or as the stand alone salad. Â The latter is the kick ass kale salad with farmer's cheese; the other is a 'meh' side conconcted with a foul salad dressing that tastes like mayo.
Hands down, best Indian I've had. I ordered chicken vindaloo... words can't describe how delicious it was. The ambiance in the restaurant is inviting, and a little bit romantic. While I ordered take out... I know that I will bring my boyfriend back when he comes home from tech school.
What I'm saying is: if you want extremely delicious, spicy (which I appreciate it's actually spicy when it says it's spicy) Indian food; look no further, this is your place.
Nice staff, decent prices... all around... awesome.
My husband and I had sampled some of India's food at a local food/wine expo so we were excited to try the main meal. Â Moreover, they are pet friendly which is a decidedly amusing twist. Â We were all (including my two pups) seated promptly on a spacious patio. Â The waitress brought over both human and dog menus, which is cute. Â
The menu: extensive!  I am always impressed with the breadth of vegetarian options on most Indian menus.  This one had a lot of interesting dishes, like tamarind tofu and  fig that I had.  My husband enjoyed his jalfrezi, too.  Oh, our appetizer was super duper tasty: $8 for a "half" basket of tasty naan. Â
Service wise, I was well taken care of. Â Our own waitress was quite attentive and everyone who brought out an item was very friendly.
I've really enjoyed this place every time I've been there, but I don't honestly have too much to say about it. Â
The space is beautiful; service has always been exceptional; and last time I was there (a Friday night) we caught the belly dancing floor show--that was pretty fun.
Even though every meal I've had here has been very good, I never really feel like it's great. Â I usually get muttar paneer every time I go to a new Indian place, because I'm in a bit of a rut, but also because it's a good litmus test. Â India's muttar paneer didn't really bowl me over, but perhaps that's not their specialty. Â I will say, the nann was delicious, the blended cocktails (something with midori) were perfect--not too sweet, nice and decadent.
I would never turn down an invitation to India, but it's not my first choice either. Â It's a solid restaurant with great service, but leaves me a bit underwhelmed.
My husband and I are officially on an Indian food kick, so when he suggested we go one of our favorite Indian restaurants, aptly named India, for my pre-half marathon dinner, I happily obliged. I have been to India many, many times, and have already reviewed it once before on my blog, but I thought another review is appropriate now that I am vegan and gluten-free and can no longer enjoy some of my old favorites mentioned on my blog. I had to navigate the menu with my relatively recent vegan/gluten-free eyes, and am thrilled to report there was so much delicious food for me to eat!
Since the last time I have dined at India, India has very thoughtfully revamped their menu to include more vegan and gluten-free options and also clearly label them as vegan and/or gluten-free. I so adore restaurants that do that- it makes my life so much easier!
I scanned the apps and was happy to see two explicitly vegan/gf options, both of which I ordered. I got the pappadum aka crispy lentil wafers with tamarind chutney, which were fantastic. Our waiter was so awesome as to detect that I was vegan and gluten-free without me saying anything and told me not to eat the mint chutney if I was avoiding dairy, as it contained yogurt. How awesome is he for being so alert, attentive and helpful! My husband ordered bhel puri, a sweet and spicy combo of puffed rice, chickpeas, wheat wafers, onion, tomatoes, chutneys and a few other ingredients. While I couldn't indulge in it due to the wheat wafers, my husband thought it was quite tasty.
I also ordered the aloo tikki, described as a pan-seared potato patty topped by chutneys, chickpeas, onions, and a few other things. I expected it would be composed of a few individual patties, but rather it was one huge pile of potato-y goodness!
On the menu, the aloo tikki is labeled as gluten-free but not vegan, but my waiter easily got it veganized for me by getting the yogurt left off. The aloo tikki was perfect- sweet from epic amounts of tamarind sauce, spicy from the seasonings and filling from the addition of yummy chickpeas. It was so nice to be able to get a substantial, delicious app given my dietary restrictions. My husband shared with me and declared it his new favorite appetizer at India!
India has a section in their menu of mix and match sauces and proteins. In other words, you can select the sauce or curry you want, and then decide if you want a certain meat in it, or paneer, extra veggies, and even tofu! I went with my standard favorite of mango curry with tofu. The curry is a sweet and spicy combo of mango curry with pineapple chunks and cashews. Paired with the tofu, it was a perfect option for a girl who often can't get a decent dose of protein when going out to eat. I have always been addicted to their mango curry, but before, I used to get it with the Indian cheese, paneer, rather than tofu.
In fact, our waiter who knows us well based on the numerous times we have dined there over the last seven years mistakenly brought out my old fav of mango with paneer. I noticed immediately, and told him of the error. He immediately and profusely apologized- he instantly realized his mistake, explaining he accidentally put in the old order I always used to get. He was so sweet and felt so bad. I on the other hand had no issue at all with the oopsie. He brought out the correct order in less than five minutes, and even packed up the mango with paneer for us so my husband could enjoy it later! Rather than take the incorrect order back, as many restaurants do, they let us keep it, as he knew my husband would like it and eat it! Therefore, we ended up getting 3 entrees for the price of 2, which was pretty awesome on their part. The service we received was truly top-notch!
Of course, I ate my mango tofu with their aromatic basmati rice, speckled with steamed peas. Their rice is so nutty and flavorful, and texturally, I love how individual and not sticky the rice kernels are.
I ate about half of my meal, and too had it packed up for the husband.
I didn't get any pics of the inside, but India is gorgeous, with lots of beautiful artwork, Bollywood movies playing on a large flat screen, and even talented belly dancers performing on this Saturday night to boot! The ambiance is fantastic, the service is five-star, and the food is fantastic. Oh, I did forget to mention India's focus on healthful (meaning nothing fried and only quality ingredients) cuisine, which makes the fact their food is so packed with flavor even more impressive since they're not relying on the deep fryer to make food taste good. India is has always been an obsession of mine, but I am really happy that despite the fact I am now vegan and gluten-free, I can still be obsessed with it!
Finished eating 7:15, hadn't talked to waitress since 7:00 right after the food was brought over, she kept walking by the table ignoring us. Had to grab three other staff to finally get to-go boxes and pay the bill while she went and got other people's checks. Â Finally paid at 7:45 a full 30 minutes after I put my fork down.
Terrible service. Â Go somewhere else.
Flavorful Indian food. Tasted very americanized - the "spicy" level was hardly noticeable. Next time, I'll have to be specific about pouring the spice on. The flavors were nice, the naan was fresh and hot. Serving sizes seemed middle of the road - it's a good amount of food, but with a lot of rice.
The decor is nice and the service was good, but a little on the slow side. Good for enjoying a leisurely meal.
Of all the Indian food options in Providence, India is my least favorite. Â That being said, it is still delish. Â (Just is unfortuante for India that they have some serious competition.) Â It is a nice sit-down style restaurant, which most of the other Indian options cannot boast. Â
I like the Bollywood movies that are always playing. Â I really don't like the bellydancers on Friday/Saturday nights. Â
Having  been there a few times, I can confidently say the waitstaff are all friendly and good at offering recommendations.  They may not be speedy and sometimes you might wait a while before your intial drink/app order is taken after being seated. Â
On the most recent visit, I tried the signature lamb chops with the cucumber kale salad and rice. Â The lamb was seasoned and cooked FABULOUSLY. Â The chops where small and bone-in, so you could pick it up and eat it like a lollipop. Â The kale cucumber salad was particularly good...and I normally am not a fan of kale. Â But the best part was the cilantro dressing for the salad. Â I want it by the vat-full. Â
My BF had the signature duck dish -- it was a little sweet overall for his taste preferences, but that does not mean that it was not good. Â
If you want a nice, non-takeout Indian dinner, you can't really go wrong.
i've been to India Restaurant a few times since moving to Providence. The food is good, service pretty good also. I really like the kale salad with dried papaya bits in it. I also really like the vegetable kabobs...very tasty. Sometime I would really like to try their buffet.
Also they always have a traditional Bollywood movie playing on the big screen. This brings me back to the days of Bikram Yoga Teacher Training when Bikram would keep us up late watching Bollywood movies.
Been here twice for dinner, great experience both times!
Lots of yummy food, good flavoring, sweet decor, and decent prices for Indian food. I've really got to get myself here for the buffet.
What really won me over the first time I came here was the appetizer selection. They have legitimate chaat! Papri chaat, bhel puri, and channa chaat salad! Chaat is basically Indian street vendor food. Kinda hard to describe, but all varieties of chaat are basically these fantastic cold salads with about a million different combinations of flavors. I spent a few months in south India when I was in college, and chaat was my favorite food there by far. I am always on the lookout for it, but most Indian places don't really make it. Â
But this place does it right!
To the nitwit who said, "This place is Americanized, they sell Indian style nachos" - no, no, no, NO. That is the papri chaat, and that is just the best description they could come up with for the menu because there's not really an easy way to describe the stuff. Just try it - trust me! That is as authentic as you get.
If you go in the summer, try to get a table out back. My group was loving our beautiful table out front, until we realized that the tables in the back have SWINGS for chairs!! Also, be sure to check out the racy woodcarvings above the bathroom sink. Hehehe. I think I learned something.
I went to India Restaurant with my wife.
The service was great. Â Our waitress easily read us the specials and described the favor/spiciness of the various sauces. Â
Our appetizer and Naan arrived quickly. Â The Naan was delicious. Â I was glad we ordered 2 servings.
The main course arrived, but again the Naan was again the star. Â The sauces were flavorful and not unnecessarily spicy.
Ok so lets be honest belly dancers DO NOT COME FROM INDIA.
but we'll get back to that....
I love the food here.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the food here.
Did I mention that I LOVE the food here?
So much that I eat so much of it I feel like I'm gonna die every single time. Especially the Sunday brunch buffet. OMG. Â All you can eat naaaaaaaan........ALL YOU CAN EAT everything? So fantasticly amazing.
The staff is BEYOND nice and the restaurant is just beautiful with swings in the back patio!
But there is something that drives me nuts... WHY THE BELLY DANCING... why? why right around my table half naked... WHY does she play with a giant sword...WHY?
It's just weird like having Irish step dancers at a Chinese restaurant... I DON'T GET IT. It is JUST ODD and distracting and UNCOMFORTABLE for all the guests. Please make it stop. Ok its not that bad... just weird and super loud. Once the belly dancing starts you can't even talk at the table. Maybe just lower the middle eastern drummen' please.
All and all this place is fantastic-- great food, huge portions, wonderful staff. You can't go wrong-- there is even a coupon on YELP ya'll!
If you want a little showsies with your curry, this is your kinda place.
