Out-of-town guests; found this gem of a restaurant nestled in downtown Franklin thanks to fellow Yelpers.
For dinner, my fiance and I started with the Pate O The South, She-Crab Soup and two of Indigo's cocktails. The cocktails were average, the Pate rich and creamy. The Soup - more cream than crab.
For dinner, I got the grilled duck. Everything complemented well but nothing stood out as the "star" of the evening.
Why the four stars: the atmosphere was nice, service pleasant, parking was easy for a weekend evening; most importantly, I know I can come here, order just about anything off the menu and not be disappointed.
We had read several fine reviews suggesting restaurant. We arrived around 1:00 on Thursday. There were maybe 8 other people in the restaurant. We wanted to try the she-crab soup and pecan encrusted pork. They were out of both. Disappointed we ordered the fried mortadella and turkey wrap. We received our food at 1:45. The service was awful. The young lady would walk by our table never speaking. I finally asked about our food and she was snippy. The manager finally brought our food. It was good especially the mortadella but the wrap nothing to brag about. I was disappointed.
Review Source:This place is fantastic. Â It is rather expensive, but it's probably the best restaurant in the Franklin area. Â It is also one of the most upscale in the area as well. Â
The salmon is delicious, and the She Crab Bisque is to die for. Â This place is best suited for people with sophisticated palettes.
I hate doing this, but we went on Saturday and it was extremely disappointing. The worst part was we were so excited to go and then it was not good. First, we had reservations and it took a long time to be seated. Second, they are part of Savor the Southside, they didn't offer it and when I asked they said the whole table had to do it. If that is the case, don't be part of the promotion. My friend and I ordered the fish special and after sitting there for a very long time they told us they were out and we had to order something else. The food took forever (we were there 2 1/2 hours) and when it came out is was sub par. Actually my husband had to send his back and this is something we NEVER do. He had the the chicken waffles and the the chicken and the vegetables were burnt, black burnt and the waffles were good but cold. He felt extremely bad about sending it back and didn't ask for another plate of food (he ate off the others) but it was too expensive not to say anything. The owners wife was extremely sweet about it apologized it being sent out. I got the pork, greens and johnny cakes. The pork was overcooked and the greens were under seasoned and bitter. The johnny cakes were yummy. Our two friends got the lamb and duck which was amazing. Our appetizers were pretty good but not as good as they have been in the past. We had the pate' and the picnic place. The terrain was dry but a good flavor and the pate was so so. The wine was delicious and our waitress was very sweet, that is why I will stay at the three stars. I will go again and I am pretty sure the kitchen was in the weeds and couldn't pull out of it. I will say we got 10% off for checking in on Yelp and that made it a little bit better.
Hopefully next time the meal will be better and they were just having an off night. I hope so because this was my favorite restaurant.
My husband and I discovered The Indigo Duck several months ago and it quickly became our favorite restaurant for a special date. Chef Joseph creates amazing combinations. His wife, Karen is a gracious hostess. We usually try the special of the evening although we have never been disappointed by the regular dishes on the menu. Last night we had the mussels for our appetizer. We are "foodies" and the mussels were the best we have ever had. The grilled scallops were also amazing. We had a refreshing dessert of homemade pineapple and blood orange sherberts to finish off a perfect meal. Our family and friends that have tried the Indigo Duck also have had a great experience. They have a nice wine collection to pair with the delicious food combinations. We are already looking forward to our next trip to "the duck". Ember C
Review Source:Went last night for a date night with my hubby. We will definitely be back for fine dining without a pretentious atmosphere or snobby wait staff. The atmosphere is great (minus the fact that it gets VERY cold in the dining room in the winter as there is no separation between the entryway and the dining room) and if I would have ordered a different entree, my review would probably be 5 stars.
The star of the show, for us, was hands-down the Grilled Scallop Monte Cristo appetizer. It's $14 but is a generous portion... in fact, their portions of everything are pretty generous! :) Anyway, you get two of the most amazing sandwiches with this appetizer. After the two of us each ate one, we declared that we weren't even that hungry any more! We will go back and order this appetizer plus a salad or soup and that will be a complete meal. The bread is amazing, a delicious gourmet version of French toast with tasty Indiana maple syrup to dunk it in! Scallops, Havarti and bacon are sandwiched between two slices and it is just absolute heaven. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had!
My husband ordered the nightly special - rabbit prepared four ways. Neither of us had ever had rabbit before and he was curious. He was happy with it and let me  sample from his plate. We both agreed that the shank portion was definitely the best! There were also some cabbage rolls stuffed with rabbit - I forget which cut of meat it was, but we both found it to be a little gamey for our tastes. :(
I had the Grilled Black Angus Ribeye. It is described as coming with a horseradish spinach salad, but I sure didn't see one on my plate. I understand that ribeyes are generally marbled but it had a little too much un-chewable fat on it for my liking. That aside, I still wasn't that impressed with the steak itself as it didn't seem to have anything unique to it... not really seasoned at all and I just expected something more. We will definitely return, but I won't order the ribeye again as it just offered nothing special. :(
That's all... gotta go daydream about that Monte Cristo appetizer again!! Nom nom nom! ;)
I think this is one of the 4 best restaurants south of Indianapolis. I love to come here for dinner, but the Sunday brunch is to die for and it is so large you can make it your big meal of the day. I had the Western Omelet with hash browns and a biscuit. I swear it was a 4 egg omelet cooked to perfection. The hash browns were diced and again cooked to perfection. They were dark brown and crunchy, one more minute and they would have been burnt and it seemed like 2 potatoes worth. The biscuit was huge and again delicious. The preserves homemade. Make sure you start with, to my mind, the best Bloody Mary in Indiana.
Review Source:Expensive, but my favorite restaurant period. They offer all kinds of strange gourmet meals. I am a picky eater, and i have never been disappointed. Â
The duck is amazing, as was the pork-shank I had on special a while back. Â I was not as thrilled with the lobster/crab cakes I had on my last visit, but the potato soup was fantastic. Â My girlfriend had the meatloaf which she had been waiting to try, and she loved it.
This is by far the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. Plan on spending around $20-$30 per person.
The Indigo Duck was a delightful brunch spot today after church. This quaint little restaurant is in downtown Franklin. The artwork on the walls, the hardwood floors, and white linen service all contribute to a beautiful and serene atmosphere.
My husband and I were in a festive mood, so we splurged on cocktails at 11 o'clock in the morning. My husband had a nice little Mimosa and I had a super spicy, but great, Bloody Mary. I had the Huevos Rancheros, which was amazing. A crispy tortilla was laid on top of a bed of shredded cheddar, then piled with basmati rice, black beans, pico de gallo, scrambled eggs, and avocado. It was a beautiful plate of food which I hated to disrupt. Fortunately, the food tasted even better than it looked.
We had a wonderful time. Our server was terrific. It was excellent food at a beautiful restaurant without a shred of pretentiousness. We look forward to returning to the Indigo Duck in the near future!
