I have only been to the Intersection twice, but I am definitely a fan. It's a large warehouse-like setting with a bar in the lounge area and a bar in the main stage area with 2 smaller bars on the side, but they don't seem to use those much. They also have tables and chairs set up in front of the bar and along the side walls if you want to sit and enjoy drinks before the show.
The only bad side about this place is that they don't have their own parking lot. You have to search the streets or pay and park in the public lots.
I was just out in Grand Rapids on Saturday to see Ghost/Opeth/Mastodon. I had never been to downtown Grand Rapids...well, I didn't even know there was a downtown Grand Rapids. It was actually really nice! The venue, on the other hand, sucked ass. The line to get in was insaneeeeeely long, which is all good and normal but it to forever to get in because they had only one guy checking id's at the door, then another one guy once you got in to give you a wrist band, then two guys who were scanning tickets. So there were basically three check points to get into the place, all moving at basically one person at a time. Holy slow.
So then we walk in and it's tiny as all hell. Ok...this can't be it...there was some shitty little band setting up equipment on a stage with a few chairs and tables in front of it. Yeah, this wasn't it. What the fuck? Oh...to the right is a door that leads to outside which leads to another door that leads to inside a much bigger venue. Cool? I don't know, but it was somewhat confusing and just weird.
So we make our way into the actual venue which was a pretty nice size. It was WARM in here though. It wasn't warm outside but as soon as we walked in it was just a wall of warm. And a stench of fart that never went away the entire evening. Seriously.
The floors of the venue are concrete. This means they are horrible. So much pain! By the time Mastodon finally took the stage my feet and shins hurt so holyfuckingshit bad I could barely focus on the show at all. I was so uncomfortable. I mean, my feet always hurt at shows, it just comes with the territory, but concrete floors are the worst. If I ever come back here, I'll have to wear some insoles or something.
The sound quality was meh. Wasn't horrible but certainly not the best and the lighting system they had set up was kind of cheesy. I didn't dig that too much. It sort of reminded me of those old school pictures we all had back in like 2nd grade where we begged our parents to pay a few extra bucks for the background with the pink-ish laser light looking things. Or maybe that was just me? Anyways...
So I wouldn't come back here again, unless they had some really amazing show going on. And I'd wear the most comfortable shoes possible.
