What a joke to call this a seafood restaurant. Â The baked clams were tiny and horrible. Â The Mahi Mahi tacos were dry and tasteless. Â The shrimp cocktail was not good. Â The Talapia was not good. Â The only thing that was decent was a burger. Â First time in Freeport and it will be my last. Â The strip is not desirable at all!!!! Â Crowded street and not even nice looking. Freeport will not see me again.
Review Source:What a disappointment!
Great seaside table, Professional, courteous service.
BUT - Below average food. And I never complain about price, but for the price the food should have been exceptional.
The Tuna Appetizer was seared but warm in the middle and fatty cut.
The chopped salad was fresh and very tasty.
The marinated skirt steak was just ok, cooked medium, and tender but a fatty cut.
The JC Paella was the biggest disappointment.
The lobster, chicken, Andouille Sausage, clams, mussels and shrimp were tough and overcooked.
The shrimp tasted fishy and was in no way fresh. No excuse for not fresh seafood in of all places Freeport.
The lobster broth was under spiced, just bland.
And how does a Paella dish have almost no rice in it?, it should not be called Paella!!
Dessert, The Chocolate Fudge cake was good.
I'd like to give 3 stars, but just can't do it.
Like I said, nice atmosphere, but disappointing food, I can't see myself returning.
I ended up here one late, random night. Â My friend and I enjoyed strong drinks as we danced the night away to the excellent cover band. Â I kind of felt like I was in a college bar listening to those anthem-type songs, except the crowd was a mix of Long Island Real Housewives and younger folk. Â I wouldn't come out of my way, but I would come here if in the area for drinks and dancing.
Review Source:This place was very overpriced. The waiter recommended paella with lobster. The lobster wasn't bad, but $60 for this dish was about double what it was worth, based on the lobster prices at other restaurants on Long Island. Plus the chicken in the paella had that "2 day old, recooked" taste--inedible. The others in our party of 6 said their food was "okay" but nothing to rave about. The restaurant is on the waterfront and that was a plus.
Review Source:Went here on a Friday night which was surprisingly a pretty quiet night on the Nautical Mile. Â I spotted a table where people just left outside on the deck and I got it right away...it was great. The inside is really nice as well. Â The waiter was pretty laid back and mellow. Â The warm bread & drinks were great as we waited for our order. Â My husband ordered the special which was seared scallops over a bacon risotto in a cream sauce. The risotto had NO bacon in it, which we did mention. No bacon flavor at all. That said, he still liked the meal a lot. Â I ordered the crab crusted tilapia. Â It wasn't 'crusty' at all and was just ok. There was also a Spanishy type rice under it.
Nothing too great, but nothing that bad either. I left a little satisfied I guess :)
We also ordered the lobster hash browns on the side. My husband and I both pictured more of a patty. But it was just a few potato wedges and onions with 5 bits of lobster in it. Eh. The wait staff was nice. I would go back to try one of their many mussels dishes!
There was  12 piece band on the other side outside which was great...we werent' too close to it to be obnoxious. More of a middle aged crowd there. Very mellow and nice.
We had lunch at this resturant this past weekend (Sunday) while visiting family.  There were 4 of us.  The very first impression was that the waiter was standoffish and would rather be someplace else.  Barely any eye contact, never told us the specials for the day. We ordered appetizers: 1 muscles (very good and large), and 2 shrimp cocktail (average at best). Main dishes were: mahi mahi-too fishy and dry, fried very small scallops with fries, crab legs-very good, but way overpriced at $49, and fried shrimp with fries-so-so.  We also had soft drinks and only one beer.  The waiter disappeared after the meal was served, never to be seen again until another waiter had to tell him we wanted the check.  The price of this LUNCH with tip was $200!!!!!!  I nearly lost my very expensive lunch!  OMG!  To  ASSUME that the waiter deserved 20% tip was deplorable. I guess this server would never make any tips given his lack of attention to his diners.  Maybe that's why the resturant just automatically adds in the tip.  Most resturants don't add in the tip unless it's a group of 8 or more.  We were only 4 people.
Never again. Â Diners beware. Â It's a tourist trap. Â I should have eaten at the crab shack.
2 stars? really? This is probably the best place I've eaten on the mile.
Service and food was excellent. Our waitress was a "no BS" type of waitress which I love (meaning she wouldn't say "everything is amazing"..she'd actually help us pick out something great).
We all split an order of mussels (the one with beer, cheese, and apples) as well as tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic glaze. Both were extremely good. I ordered a lobster ravioli which was in this awesome cream sauce.
The view, as with pretty much anywhere you eat on the mile, was great too. Only downside would be price (it's a little bit on the expensive side).
Definitely would come back here again next time on the mile.
If you read down to Nick C.'s review from 7/17/11 its pretty dead on.
Why my friend and I didnt see this as a warning I dont know. Anyway lunch for two was $154. Did I mention it was lunch. They automatically attach a 20% tip to the bill which I thought was only for large parties in certain restaurants.
Food was sub-par. Halibut dry, although waiter swears it to be the fish on the menu. My friend got the $50+ paella, which was ok by no means worth $50+.
There does not seem to be any good restuarants on the Mile, or at least just ok restaurants.
I will always read reviews here for now on and believe them.
Not a good experience
We were visiting from Boston for the week, and had stopped in Freeport for a meal. It was just after 3:00, so the waiter said we would have to order from the dinner menu. Not a problem, but things were pretty expensive. Here are a few of my complaints:
- We ordered the mussel fondue for appetizer for $14. We thought it would be something different, and the kids might enjoy it. It turns out that has nothing to do with fondue, just some cheese flavoring added to the thin broth the mussels were sitting in. Oh, and they did throw in a cut-up apple into the broth. Again, this has nothing to do with fondue.
- The waiter recommend the paella which was a special, so not on the menu. After we ordered this we realized that the price was $49.95 - way higher than anything else on the menu. At that price, they really owe it to the customer to tell them. The lobster on top of the paella was good, but hardly worth the price. There wasn't much rice - usually paella has plenty?
- My son ordered a cheeseburger - the cheapest thing on the menu for $12.00. He was charged an extra 75 cents for cheese.
- They automatically added the 20% tip to the bill. I've never heard of that unless its a large party. The total for 2 adults and 2 children wsa $145 - pretty expensive for a late lunch!
This could be a great restaurant - the setting is pretty, and the decor is nice. But they have to realize that deceiving their customers into paying a lot is not going to keep them in business, especially when people can easily read reviews online.
****For the Bar ONLY****
JC Cove is your normal Mile restaurant/bar. Â Outside seating on the water, outside bar with live bands /djs. Â The view is really pretty, granted you have a nice day and party boats aren't leaving/entering the canal. The bartenders are always really attentive and nice but I'm concerned about the liquor. Â I ordered a pear martini that tasted like rubbing alcohol. Â I've only been there now twice but I'm alomst 100% sure they use bottom shelf (regardless of the bottle). Â Sad.
Absolutely Robbed!
This may be a long one, so just bear with me.
Walking down the Nautical Mile on a Summer's eve, places are littered with live bands, and the sounds of good times. Â This place was no exception. Â Plus they had a deck facing the marina, and a chalkboard that said the special was "JC Paella!" Â Which if you have read a review or two of mine you would know, I just love Paella!
So it was 3 of us, a busy weekend night, an hour for a table.  Not bad at all, hung by the bar, snagged a few drinks and 2 appetizers.  Crab cakes, and a spicy tuna roll.  I know never to get sushi at a none sushi place but one of the people in my lot wouldn't  listen to reason.  So needless to say the sushi was awful.  Rolled like a 2 yr old did it, and the rice was just plain white rice, not the sticky rice we have come to know and love with sushi.  The crab cakes... I have had better in the frozen food isle of Stop & Shop.
Our table was ready, we sat overlooking the marina, within earshot of the band... perfect. Â Aside from the smell. Â South Street Seaport @ 5am. Â Not the most appetizing smell.
Our waiter; very nice guy, Keith I think, very helpful. Â He came to our table, told us the specials, told us his favorite, scallops over risotto, told us the surf and turf was top notch as well. Â Since we have never been, and were starving it all sounded great. Â But we wanted to do something where everyone could sample everything. Â His suggestion changed it all. Â We wanted surf & turf, the scallop over risotto, and the Paella of course.
"Why don't you do the surf and turf, except substitute the lobster with crab legs." Â Why would we do that? Â "Well the Paella comes with a full lobster underneath it." ... "I said it has a full lobster underneath the Paella." Â Great!! Â Sounded fantastic.
So we get the food, if you notice by my pictures, everything looked amazing. Â The Paella smelled fantastic, it was packed with muscles and clams, a few shrimp, and like he said a 1.5 lb lobster underneath it all. Â The scallops over risotto was perfect portion size. Â The turf part certainly was not a Filet Mignon as the turf part usually is, and the surf was a few king crab legs. Â "Keith, what is with the steak?" Â "Oh well since you guys wanted to share, I figured I would substitute the Filet with the Porterhouse." Â Ok, not ideal, but he was thinking about everyone sharing.
It all looked great, but as we all know, looks can be deceiving. Â The rice in the Paella was Uncle Ben's :90 rice... I would bet the house on it. Â The muscles, and clams all had meat the size of peas, again, no joke. Â The steak... to say it was leathery would be handing it a complement. Â The scallops.... not bad. Â And the risotto, again, not bad. Â The crab legs, and lobster were good, not great but good. Â But with these all you have to do is boil, to ruin that you would have to be a moron.
Onto the bill. Â After an underwhelming meal we started to figure out how much it would be so we could get the check, hand the cash and split. Â "Say probably in the $150 range?" Â Yeah, that sounded good.
Keith came over with the bill, puts it on the table. Â We asked if he could add one more round of drinks to it before closing it out, we had only had 1 round so far since while we were eating he was nowhere to be found. Â "Don't worry about it, this round on me." Â Very nice. Â
Now onto that bill... $267. Â Read that again, two hundred and sixty seven dollars. Â 3 meals, 3 drinks, all awful tasting, while choking it down with the smell of an 80 yr old fisherman... $267. Â The apps and 1st rd of drinks were closed out at the bar, so include that ($40), and a tip (20%), $360.
Why was it so much? Â All of that substituting he was doing with the surf and turf was not substituting at all. Â For the steak that felt like it still had the skin on it was full porterhouse price of $85. Â The crab legs that "substituted" in for the lobster? Â $50. Â The Paella that was Uncle Ben over lobster, $60. Â
Money for me is nothing to complain about. Â Yes I like to eat good food on the cheap, but every now and then it is nice to splurge on a good meal with good company, in a good spot. Â This was an awful meal in an awful spot, and clearly we all felt ripped off.
But life goes on, and you learn by doing. Â Now we know. Â Every place that has live band (that included a sax, which is such a great addition to any band!!) and a chalkboard that says Paella isn't all cupcakes and rainbows like it appears to be.
Highly Recommended;
duh
I went to this restaurant on memorial day and it was def nice to eat right on the water and plus they had a dj outside. Â We ordered clams on a half shell that were way too salty and I actually ended up waking up to swollen eyes the next day and I've eaten shellfish plenty of times and that never happened to me. Plus I ordered lobstertails and my b/f ordered the surf & turf, which both were supposed to be specials, but when the bill came it was over $200. Â It was def overpriced and the seafood was extremely salty, I've def experience much better seafood on the nautical mile. Â Not to mention, when we went outside to enjoy the dj and have some cocktails, 2 girls came over just about pushing us out of the way to sit by the bar and then wanted to cause a fight over a stool... we ended up leaving our drinks and going to a diff spot.
Review Source:My husband and I have eaten here on Saturday evenings two weeks in a row. Â We usually come around 5pm. Â The seating in the back by the water is really nice - one of the best views on the mile. Â (Not too crazy about the indoor seating, as there is nothing to buffer the noise and lots of hard, shiny surfaces. Â It gets very loud inside.) Â The wait staff have been very knowledgeable and efficient - I have a gluten allergy and always have to ask about ingredients, and they've taken care of me very well. Â
From the foods that I've eaten here - the red snapper and the sea scallops - I get the impression that they put a lot of work into fresh and natural ingredients. Â I've been very pleased with presentation and flavor. Â Glasses of wine are plentiful and oversized.
Food on the nautical mile is overpriced and not that great, but I think JC Cove might be raising the bar. Â No pun intended :)
I stayed outside for most of my time here because we went to see the group that was playing there ("Uncle Mudd"). My girlfriend and I got daquiris which were pretty tasty. We also split a salad and calamari. Â The food was presented well and tasted fine (hard to screw up a salad). Â We hung out there for a while talking to the band. When it came time to get our check we waited about 20 minutes and they still ended up charging us the wrong thing twice. Â That was very irritating and frustrating which is one of the reasons i gave it the 3 stars. Â I also felt like it was over-priced and was not worth what we were paying for. Â I did like the outside bar atmosphere. Quaint. Service was ehh for me.
Review Source:Unless you have all day, enjoy mediocre food and don't mind throwing your money away, definitely do not go here. Â Food and service is sub par, to say the least. Â Our waiter was horrible. Â He slowly walked around like he had a load in his pants and took his sweet ass time. Â From taking our initial orders, to bringing the food out and giving us our check - everything took 3x as long as it should take. Â Mind you, this was at 1pm in the afternoon and there were only 3 customers in the entire restaurant and they appeared to be fully staffed.
DO NOT order the baked clams here - they were undercooked and neon orange. Â I have no idea what they were made of, but they tasted like crap. Â The crab cake (also neon orange) was crunchy and seemed as though it was previously frozen and reheated in an EZ Bake oven. Â When the waiter asked us how the food was - I told him the truth -- not so good. Â He didn't acknowledge our response. Â Hey, if you're not going to do anything about it - DON'T ASK ME WHAT I THINK. Â Remember...an apology goes a long way and if this jerk would have just apologized for his slowness or the bad food, there would be no problem but to act like this is totally normal is just unacceptable. Â The only thing that kept me from having a meltdown was the lobster salad that was pretty decent, but too small - definitely not worth the $16 it cost. Â The people who were seated after us got their food before we did and generally, the staff just seemed to not have their shit together. Â
The kicker was at the end - he hands the check to my husband and barely mumbles, "Thank you, sir" - no eye contact with me....even though I'm the one with the credit card in my purse.  The bill made me want to cry.  I felt so violated.  There are a few good  restaurants on the Nautical Mile (i.e. Hudson & McCoy, EB Elliotts) - make sure when you come across JC Cove, just keep on walking.
Went here for a music show on a Thursday night. The outdoor bar was located simultaneously on the sidewalk as well as the water. Wouldn't have taken it for upscale joint until I saw the prices. Yikes.
The tuna with the whipped wasabi potatoes and asian BBQ sauce was amazing. And it was actually large enough to split (which makes the price seem a bit more reasonable). The pasta JC with the sundried tomatoes and broccolli was also quite good but i could make that dish at home so I'm not THAT impressed.
The drinks are about average price and on a nice night, it wouldn't be such a bad idea to stop by for a drink.
I hate to say this, because I love the nautical mile so much, but this was honestly the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. When we got there they told us it would be a 30 minute wait, which was great since all the other restaurants had an hour and 30 minute wait... now I know why.
We waited 45 minutes for our table, sat and were almost immediately greeted by our waiter. He ID'ed us even though we were all already holding drinks from the bar, and we ordered another round. We also ordered our dinner since we were ready. My 3 friends ordered: Crabmeat & Avocado Salad, Penne Pasta w/ Chicken, the sole special and I ordered salmon.
About 15 minutes later the waiter came back saying he had forgotten our drink order. 10 minutes later we finally got our drinks. Another 10 minutes later we had to ask the busboy for bread and water (second time asking) and finally got that. But since they ran out of knives and glasses we had to butter our bread with forks and drink out of plastic cups.
About 45 looong minutes later, our waiter apologizes and says the kitchen is backed up and our food will be out in a minute. Then he comes back and says they ran out of avocado can my friend please order something else, so she orders a different salad. How come they didn't tell us they were out of avocado immediately when he put the order in... 45 MINUTES AGO! We then wait 20 more minutes and our food is still not out. We have now waited an hour to sit, and another hour for food. Our waiter has disappeared so we ask for a manager. He apologizes and buys us a round of drinks, which never comes.
FINALLY our food comes out, mine is missing. About 5 minutes later they bring over another sole special, assuring me that I did not order the salmon. AHHHHHHH! Our waiter kind of apologizes again and says I will have the salmon in 4 minutes. I tell him I don't want either, just don't worry about it. He assures me that I will not have to pay for the sole special or the salmon, to please just enjoy both. The salmon comes about 20 minutes later, I eat some of both dishes, they are pretty good. Our complimentary drinks still have not come.
Our dinner is finished and our waiter asks again what we are drinking, as our table is getting cleared off our complimentary drinks finally come. We ask for the check and it takes 15 minutes to get there. When we get the check, it is very wrong. In addition to the food and drink that actually came, we have also been charged for 2 sole specials, and the crabmeat & avocado salad. The salmon, which i actually ordered, which was significantly cheaper than the sole special was not on the bill. When we question the waiter about it, he is visibly annoyed, tells me that I have to pay for one dinner or the other, and says he will change the crabmeat salad to the salad my friend actually got. It takes another 10 minutes for the right bill to come.
Now, being a waitress and a bartender I never complain about service, especially on busy nights because I know how it is. But this was horrible. We were paying a lot of money and expected good food and service, neither of which we got. In addition our waiter was kind of rude and seemed to be annoyed with us. By the end of the night, we were the only table left in the restaurant and they still couldn't get our food right.
Lastly, it is inappropriate (and annoying) for waiters to address their customers as "babe" "baby" & "sweetheart" constantly throughout the night.
DO NOT go here!
