Wen to Depeche Mode on Sept. 8, great show, we were in the top row center but the sound was actually decent. Great views. But what I take issue with was the bus line to Freeport station. It took over an hour to wait for a bus as it seems only 1-2 were in service and it was in the mid-50's temperature-wise. Next time I have a choice or Barlcay's or JB, no question, I'll be staying local, the commute from Manhattan is painstakingly long, your entire day is spent getting there and back.

I'm disappointed that i have to pay 50 to get in VIP to get in and another 13 to get a beer. Not cool!

Went to the Jimmy Buffet concert at Jones Beach Theater last night.  Our seats were in the top tier, but the sound was great, we could see the stage fine, and the bonus was the view of the full moon reflected over both Zach's Bay and the ocean.  It was spectacular.  There was only one elevator to the top level which was a steep climb for many parrot heads.  The path from parking field 4 to the theater was narrow, so it took a while to walk there frustrating many fans.
It gets 4 stars because of the fabulous setting.

If it was 1997, I would have given this venue 5 stars.  In 2013, I can only give it 3. I'll explain why:

First, let me say that the venue itself is an amazing place to see a concert.   The band  arguably has the worst view; the fans see the band and an amazing landscape of the immediate south shore of Long Island; the beach, the tributaries and the little nooks and crannies that make Jones Beach special.

The sound is average.  There is no mystical sound presence here.  It's a good place to enjoy a concert.  No matter where you are, you have a good view and decent sound.  I've been up top - way up top - and it's definitely acceptable.

I have many fond memories of this venue prior to Nikon running the show.  It was a good place to lose yourself for an evening, forget your troubles, and enjoy a show.  That has changed.

Here is why I took away 2 stars:

#1 Beer.  They don't serve beer in general concessions.  You have to pay $50 PER TICKET to have THE PRIVLEGE of paying $13 for a shitty beer.

    #2 Parking
Good luck getting out of there.  It's a complete nightmare with 100,000 lanes going into 1.  If you're at all nervous about leaving, sit.  Stay.  Stay in the lot for 2 hours after the concert.  It's a good time to have one last beer with your friends and then sober up.  Or, pay the $30 (well spent money) to have premier parking.  You can tailgate in there without the hassle from the cops, and you can get out of there within 10 minutes of leaving your seat.

    My honest recommendation to Nikon:
Allow beer sales and double the security if you have to.  You'll make more doing so.  VIP parking is priced right at the current time.

So I just came here again last weekend for the Blake Shelton concert and feel like a dumbass for not realizing that there actually is an elevator to get to the nosebleeds.  I sat in the same area as last time and this time the sound was great.  I also lucked out by finding real close parking even though I showed up an hour late.  A great time was had by all, especially my 3 year old daughter who enjoyed her first country concert. I have fallen back in love with you, Jones Beach.

I attended a show on July 23, 2013.  My seats (very expensive) were orchestra, row O.  As we watched the opening acts we noticed that the people to our left and slightly ahead of us (the handicapped accessible area) were being moved around because of puddles.  Little by little, the water rose until those folks were now several rows back from where they started out.  Apparently high tide was here.  Within minutes the water rose rapidly and we had to take our shoes off in order to keep them dry.  We then had to watch the rest of the concert (about 2 hours more) standing in ankle deep sea water, which unfortunately, also had garbage floating around in it. (Water bottles, popcorn buckets, napkins, etc.)  Since everyone was standing, we could not sit and get our feet out of the water because then we would not be able to see the stage.  At row O, we were ankle deep, but people ahead of us were in nearly a foot of water.  Security and personnel were not alarmed at all - in fact, most of them were wearing boots or galoshes over their shoes, which means that this is a normal occurrence.  At those prices, we should not have had to stand in the ocean with garbage swirling around our legs to see the show.  It was disgusting.  Nikon Theater at Jones Beach should be ashamed of their lack of customer care.

Great stadium! by the ocean so it give a great breeze on hot summer days. the view is great and there are tons of seats! some of the far back seats are small and dirty but you get what you pay for  the lower seats are strong large quality. they also have a lot of food court places and rest rooms.

This should be a nice venue I mean its is outside and right on the water. HOWEVER the theater might as well be run by organized crime. Bring your wallet because you are going to get shaken down!

Close parking? Sure upgrade to VIP for $30.
The true crime however lies in their alcohol policy. Beer, wine, etc. is not sold anywhere in the venue. IF you would like to have a beer while you watch the concert (novel idea), you must pay a $50 VIP upgrade fee to each ticket.

What does this $50 get you? The privilege to go inside the area and buy $13 beers and $16 steak sandwiches! Better drink quickly, because you can't leave the area with drinks. Good luck seeing the stage from this area (well a small side view can be seen). Oh and ladies, only three separate one toilet restrooms.

After this experience, I felt like to should fill out a police report because I was robbed! NO WAY I will be back.

The Jones Beach Theatre is a great place to see a rock concert. It's a small intimate setting with not a bad seat in the house. Seeing a concert on the water is awesome. I love this place. I recommend Jones Beach Theater highly. Keep on rocking.

This place is great! I've been to many concerts here over the years and has a blast each and every time. Like many other fellow Yelpers have stated, it's big and open with good quality of sound. The catch is... the concerts are rain or shine. Since it's outdoors you really need to keep track of that weather. But if you get a good night, it's perfect. You have the cool sea breeze hitting you and ahh it's just the best.

Like any stadium, the food and drinks are EXPENSIVE. Also, any merchandise they are selling too. (i.e. tee shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc) My personal recommendation is to get the shirts they sell in the parking lot after the concert. Guarenteed you can get a shirt for $10-15 instead of $40. Bargain.

Unlike other venues, this place offers pretty reasonable tickets. And the great thing is that since this stadium isn't as well known as say... MSG... the availibility on tickets is better and you can snag it without buying from crazy scalpers. The last concert I went to here was Florence and the Machine. It was phenomenal. Well worth it.

    The BAD :
-Drinks cost as much as they do at Citifield or Yankee Stadium.

    The GOOD:
-Tailgating is alive and well and the parking is free.

    The VERDICT:
-A cool place to catch a concert!

This is a nice open arena with a beautiful view of the center stage. Good audio system is a plus. They dont allow you to have alcohol on the stands, only in the VIP areas. There are enough concessions stands to loot your money but they are with every theater.

Overall we had a great experience watching Yanni live in concert for his 2012 north america tour. An arena is as good as its performer and Yanni was terrific.

One more thing I must say about this venue is, it is close to the most amazing city with the most diverse community in the world. At one time I heard five different languages while waiting for my popcorn at concessions stand. That is what makes this place unique and that is what I like about it.

Is there a better place to see a concert during the summer? This theater provides wide open vistas of the Great South Bay, Jones Beach, and the Atlantic Ocean. With ample seating but a size much smaller than your normal arena or theater this venue provides an intimate atmosphere for concert goers.

One of the downfalls of the amphitheater is that alcohol sales are limited to the VIP tents only. How do they expect you to watch Jimmy Buffett without margaritas, boat drinks, or at least a cold draft beer! Blasphemy I say! If you splurge on VIP parking there's usually one hell of a party going on in the parking lot before a show. Pack your cooler and chairs and you're bound to meet new friends out there!

There sure is a lot to love about the Jones Beach concert venue out on Long Island! I'll start out with the positives because there are a ton of them:

This amphitheater provides one of the prettiest backdrops for a concert you will
ever find, sitting in the middle of a state park on a massive piece of property all to itself.

The sides of the stage and the orchestra seats are surrounded by water from the bay which makes for a special feel, especially at night when the moon shines onto the water.

Two giant screens are a help if you are far away (unless you go see Bob Dylan, no screens allowed!) and if you do wind up way up top, your view of the stage is not that great but you have the best scenic overhead view of the entire amphitheater.

Because you are in a wide open area, the sound is better up close. Anywhere in the Orchestra is a good bet for a nice view and good sound. Ticket prices reflect the quality of your location and you will get what you pay for.

They have limited but good enough food options, including all the usual chicken strips, burgers, hot dogs and such. Lots of different ice cream and other sweets are available.

No, they do not sell alcohol, but you have to understand that the theater is on the property of a state park so they are not allowed to vend alcohol. I like this because it prevents the amount of drunken fools bothering people by the time the main act takes the stage! And for all the people who can't go to a concert without being wasted, you need to get yourself some kind of help! Or you can just take advantage of drinking in the parking lot before you go in (parking is free and two massive lots are available to choose from).

The only real negative is the upper levels because the sound deteriorates and you can't see much, but like i said before you will pay significantly less for seats higher up and you do get an amazing view of everything as a small trade off. Sight lines on the extreme sides of the orchestra could be rough if you have some tall people in front of you, but that's common almost everywhere.

I saw my first concert here many years ago and have been to so many since that i have lost count. Jones Beach is a sure thing for a summer show regardless of the weather so pack the car and head on out when you get the chance!

Came here for a Rihanna concert and a Maroon 5 concert. What I do like about this venue is no matter where you sit, you get a pretty decent view of the stage!

With that said, they don't sell alcohol or beer =( What is that crap! My friends and I had to (painfully) chug cans of 4lokos in the parking lot at our makeshift "tailgate/pregame" before heading inside and attempting to sneak into the VIP area for some dranks. Mission not accomplished.

Concerts minus booze is a big no-no, Nikon theater!! :(

I would easily give Jones Beach Amphitheater 5 stars if it were easier to get to from NYC and if they actually sold alcohol. Luckily for me, I have friends who live outside Manhattan with cars, so we have been able to get to and from and also the ability to tailgate and drinks some brews (obviously on the D/L because of the silly po-po) before the show.

The magnificent summer breeze you will get from the Sound are unmatched to any outside venue in the tri-state area. Love you PNC, and I know you serve beer, but you don't hold a candle to your cousin at Jones Beach. It also doesn't really matter where you are seated, because they provide giant projection screens for everyone to enjoy the show. I've seen various artists ranging from Rage Against the Machine (hey Dysfunctional Family Picnic '99) to 311 to John Mayer and all shows have been amazing.

Yes, it sucks that you can't buy beer. That said, it invites lots of fun tailgating prior to a show and they aren't particularly strict about policing that. Also, if they'd did sell beer, I can't imagine what it would cost as a bottle of water is $6.

The views are stunning, and you can truly see from nearly any seat and there are two projection screens (one on each side of the stage). The sound is good as long as you are in the orchestra, but does get sketchy if you sit up near the top.

This venue used to get more bands I wanted to see than it does now; my music tastes haven't changed very much so it seems to have fallen off the map a bit. If you've never been, and you love the beach, and a band you like is playing, it's worth it. If that band is also playing a venue in the city, might be worth going there instead.

I saw Weezer and the Flaming Lips here. One of the best shows I've ever seen. The amphitheater is absolutely beautiful, with the stage in the bay. From our seats (way up on the upper deck), we could see the bay, the ocean, the barrier island, and inland Long Island. We could also make out the stage.

We got rained on. Hard-core. That was part of the fun. The enveloping thunderstorm was absolutely beautiful. But they made us exit our seats and hide inside. Oh well. I guess I'm grateful that they delayed the concert. That still didn't prevent me from getting completely soaked.

There are no buses coming back from the theater to LIRR at night. That was a real bummer. We took a cab, which charged us a fee of $10 per person. Wow. $50 to drive us a couple miles. Nice.

The theater is dry. It would have been really nice to drink something during this whole experience. Some of the other reviews say that VIP ticket holders can get beer, but that was certainly out of our purview.

    My Favorite things about summer:
    1.  It's hella light out.  Yay sun!
    2. The beach of course.
    3. Ralphs
    4.  School's out so I can sleep an extra 15 minutes due to light traffic
    5.  CONCERTS AT JONES BEACH.

I may have a bias point of view since I'm lucky enough to know someone with a suite there but still there is no other place in the summer to see a concert.  You're right on the water so you have the gorgeous views, the smell of the ocean and there's a certain energy that the elements bring to the crowd.  Oh and every season there's this swan "couple" who chill out on the side by the VIP tent.  Brings a smile to my face.

As for the suites they are perfect.  The staff is always accomodating, the security is always there for you.  I go sometimes just for the people since the concerts range from Jimmy Buffet to Incubus, you'll always leave with an interesting story.

First concert's coming up in a few weeks and I'm stoked.  Soundgarden baby wooo hoo!

Great venue to see shows at in the summertime... went to see David Gray here and before the concert got to chill across the street on the beach for a bit, get some rays, and have a mini picnic.. makes for a really nice relaxing day.  Sound was okay but it's all outdoors. The arena is big but not overly so that you can see even if you're a bit further back.  just make sure the weather is on your side and it will make for a really nice event.

One downside is that you can't buy beer unless you have VIP tickets..

I think this place has potential. It is an unique music venue, but I feel like it can be so much more.

Maybe because I have only been here for the Allman Bros (whom I could not care less about), but I did not have a good time here. It is hot during the day when you are hanging out in the parking lot, but it gets pretty chilly during the show at night because of the breeze that comes off from the water. The sound wasn't anything impressive either.

I think I just have to come here for a band that I actually enjoy!

Not a bad venue. It's not as humongous as a full size arena, so it makes shows a bit more intimate. Also, they get quite a few good acts here, so there are plenty of shows to choose from. Parking is abundant.

All that aside, there are some significant downsides to seeing a concert here. It's open air so if the weather turns ugly you are in for a soaking. Even on a nice day it can get quite cold and breezy since it's situated on the water. Also, the sound, as with any outdoor show, is lacking compared to an arena. Everything seems to be a bit flatter unless you're sitting in the first 10 rows.

Kind of a mixed bag, but a decent place to see a show nonetheless.

As a Long Islander, I must love Jones Beach and seeing shows here.  There is a good reason for this though; it is simply a fantastic, unique place to see any concert.  While it has gotten pricey over the years (what hasn't?), a show here will leave you with positive memories no matter what.

The first time I came here was in 1999 for my very first concert.  The seats were fourth row center (Orchestra A row D) but since then I have never had such great luck with tickets but have always managed to snag a seat in the Orchestra section minus one show (Green Day/Jimmy Eat World in 2002).  Prices average nowadays in 2010 at around $45 from what I have seen posted recently.  As other reviewers have pointed out, try to buy at the box office to save a bit on fees or if at a show earlier in the year, keep an eye for Jones Beach staff selling $10 tickets to other shows/upgrades for your current show.  If you get seats in the upper mezzanine, it's an easy way to move closer with better sound.

Sightlines are unobstructed for the entire venue.  No matter what, you will be able to see unless the world's tallest man sits in front of you.  Large screens on either side of the stage allow you to see performers up close in case your seats are higher up or if you want to take a photo pretending that you are practically on stage.

Sound quality is great if in the orchestra, but there are some delays if seated higher up.  It still is clear so do not hesitate to attend if those are the only seats available.

With the backdrop being the ocean, this venue is simply beautiful.  If it's raining, the floor can flood.  What Long Islander does not love the ocean though?  Again, a memorable experience no matter what.

Surprisingly, there is no overpriced (or underpriced for that matter) alcohol available unless you have VIP tickets.  What venue does not want to make a pretty penny on $8 cups of beer?  At the very least, there are far fewer drunks to deal with and I will never complain about that.

Staff is friendly and typically helpful.

Parking is FREE if you come after 5 or 6, as the fee booths close.  This will save you a  bit on overpriced concessions, should you choose to purchase them.  Park near the EXITS otherwise leaving can be a very long process.

Missed out on tickets?  Hang out on the beach or in the parking lot during the show and you can still hear everything fairly well.  Being inside is best, of course, but sometimes the beach itself and a little music in the background is all you need.

This is a mid-sized venue, I suppose one could say - assuming Madison Square Garden is a large and the WaMu Theater (ridiculous name, by the way) is a small venue.

Buying tickets can be relatively simple (if you don't need wheelchair-accessible seating.  Obtaining regular tickets means calling the box office or - I believe - going online.  Obtaining accessible seats involves e-mailing, waiting for a reply, e-mailing again, then picking them up at the will-call window.

I've not found the sound quality to be compromised by sitting at the back (top of the first "deck"); the view is, of course, better on the floor. Durh.  That said, most acts employ giant screens on both sides of the stage.

Random notes: Food/drinks will kill your wallet, but you knew that. (I paid $4.00 for an admittedly large cup of Diet Coke.).  Not as many parking lot cheesy t-shirt hawkers as some other venues.  Escaping at the end of the night doesn't take that long, really.  There's no crazy retracting roof, so add/subtract stars based on your love for/hatred of rain.

Here's the thing, though: If the act you wanna see is gonna be at the beach and nowhere else, do any of these reviews really matter?

Buy at the box office if you can, as typical fees apply. Get 'em while you're there for future dates. Pay attention after shows too for reduced price tickets to upcoming shows (sold by reps near the exits).

This review is half about the concert, and half about the venue itself.

    I'll start with the concert:

I've been to four or five shows at Nikon (aka Jones Beach Theatre).  Most of them have been Def Leppard shows, not because I'm such an enormous fan, but because a friend of mine is, and it's become a yearly tradition. The truth is, they actually rock live. They're very good at what they do, they have a good stage show, they're excellent musicians and you know EVERY WORD TO (just about) EVERY SONG (POUR-sum-SUgah-on-MEEEeee). They even have a camera on the drummer's feet (yes, he only has one arm) to show all the fancy footwork he does to make up for only having one arm.  This night was no exception to their rockingness.

The opening acts for Def Leppard vary from year to year. The first year was Journey. FREAKIN' JOURNEY. Yes. The next year it was Styx and Foreigner. Styx actually outrocked expectations. Foreigner was good, as expected. When Def Leppard walks onstage, however, their attitude is almost like, "Who were those silly douchebags that opened for us? What were their names again?" The pretty much take over and blow them out.

THIS year, however, the openers were Cheap Trick (solid, some good songs, Robin Zander is an awesome vocalist, the guitarist, Rick Neilsen, is a huge douchebag), and POISON.

I was praying that Poison would be first so we could miss most of their show.  Not so much. Bah.

    Here's my review of Poison:

    THEY
    SUCK.
    THE
    END.

Bad, music, bad lyrics, bad hair, bad breath, bad attitude, BRETT MICHAELS GO HOME. Ew. They are Spinal Tap incarnate only not nearly as good nor as funny.

    Geesh. AW-FUL.

Five stars for Def Leppard. Minus half a star for making us endure Poison.

    ====

    The venue:

Minus half a star: The venue is great with one small exception for confusion created by proximity of gate letters to section letters. Our tickets were Section G, Row PP, Seats 5-8. Why on EARTH, then, is Section G near Gate A, and not near Gate G? You look at your ticket and it says section G. There's a gate G. Logical that your section would be near the gate with the same letter, right? But, NO. The gates are exactly opposite of the sections and there is nothing to indicate which gate you should enter into to get to your section. Lame-O.

Other than that, the venue is great. Sound is excellent and you're right by the water. What could be better?

    I'm just not impressed.

Depending on the wind depends on whether you hear anything.

Everything is way way way too expensive and you can't bring anything in.

I feel insulted that I get searched coming into the venue (has our society degraded that much?).

BTW, you can have a great tail-gate party before the show!

I'm from Long Island. When you're from Long Island you must sign a contract when you become a teenager that says you will utter the words "best place to see a concert, ever" after someone mentions Jones Beach Theater. Seriously, it's a law. It's true. Jones Beach really is the best place to see a concert, ever! But they make you sign the contract anyway just in case.

Been to a lot of concerts in my day and some were mind blowing. Some, I can't remember because they were either really bad, boring or I was totally wasted DUDE! (Sorry Mom.) But I remember every single concert I've ever seen at Jones Beach and I loved them all. Even the one the guy reviewed with Bowie and Moby? Yep, saw that one too and even though he's right, it poured cats and dogs, I had a great time.

I've seen everyone at Jones Beach from David Lee Roth to Black Crowes/Jimmy Page to the Cranberries to Blues Traveler to Tori Amos to... well you get the point. I make it my business to see at least two shows per summer here and I've never been disappointed. Does the food costs a gazillion dollars, of course. It costs too much at Great Adventure and Yankee Stadium too, but people keep going. You go for the music.

You can actually have a great tailgate party in the parking lot and the even though the cops are out in force, I've personally never gotten a ticket - yet. It's on the beach, and when the sun starts going down, the breeze starts to blow and the music plays, you are in heaven. The good heaven, where there's loud rock and roll!

Jordan Knight gave me a high five.

One of my favorite venues to see a concert.  There's nothing better than a concert at Jones Beach in the summer.  I've never sat all the way at the top but it seems like the type of place where no matter where your seat is, it's decent.    Behind the stage is the water, which is cool.  It's so nice at night.....

One star deducted for not serving beer.

3.5 stars for sure. My two biggest complaints are that they don't serve beer here which is the first I've seen in a venue especially one this size and that they charge unbelievable prices for everything- like $7 for a 20oz soda.

The last time I came here which was for a Stone Temple Pilots concert which was amazing, the band put on a great show, it was awesome looking out onto the water while it was still light out during the opening bands and luckily the weather was beautiful and both screens were up and going so I had a great time. They have a food station outside the venue in the parking lot which was nice although they were just as overpriced as inside the venue and they too did not serve beer before the concert. There were signs posted in the parking lot that no alcohol or tailgating was allowed which I think is a bit ridiculous but I saw a ton of people get away with it so its hit or miss on whether you can get away with it here. The parking lot is also a short little walk from the main beach so if you get here early enough you can go check out Jones Beach which was nice.

I've been to a bunch of shows in the theater and even a couple from the beach.  If you want to see the opening band but don't want to shell out the dough for 30 minutes listen from the beach.  The sound isn't always great (inside or out) but the atmosphere boosts the appeal.  The stage sits right on the water.  Occasionally you'll see the Coast Guard apprehending some dope in a row bow trying to see a free show.

The food sucks and is overpriced.  Eat before you get there, have a tailgate party or join someone else's tailgate party... you'll thank me  There are always plenty happening  in the parking lot.  The bathrooms are disgusting.  Take an elevator ride to the Mezz level (3) and use the bathrooms up there.  Hardly anyone is sitting up there so the bathrooms are hardly used.

Pro: the ease of theft. It is totally possible to hear the concerts from the beach (or your boat, if you have one, you bastard!) for $0.00. You'll have to avoid the beach police but...they're the beach police. They never scared off anybody.

Con: if you actually cough up the dough to go to a concert here, there's a good chance you'll scarcely hear anything if the wind is blowing the wrong way, especially if you're sitting in the second tier they added on a few years ago. That new section is the worst, and sort of ruined the place. If you can't get decent seats, well...see paragraph number one for details.

All things considered, the atmosphere is beautiful; the theater is right on the water, and the cool breeze is very refreshing during those humid New York summer nights. But the real reason I'm giving the Jones Beach Amphitheater three stars instead of the two it deserves for its shitty sound system comes down to two words: Iggy Pop. I scored free tickets to a Stooges show here once, and against all odds, it was out of control. They let this guy crowd surf like nobody's business, and run around the theater hugging and pushing everyone like a madman. And he played "I Wanna Be Your Dog" twice. In a row.

Would get 5 stars if you could drink a damn beer here.

Anyways...I saw a handful of concerts here including front row to see John Mayer and the Counting Crows. Both were great live and nothing beats that view to the left or right of the water behind the stage. the cool summer breeze as the thousands of fans are going crazy is something you soon will not forget. Definitely check out a show here...love it.

I would have given it 5 stars EXCEPT for the mugging I got at the concession stand.

Went last night to see Gwen Stefani (she ROCKED) with a friend-= said friend being the overly hot thing she is wanted a dog and soda  and I was willing to oblige.. .

Now don't get me wrong, I am used to paying $4 for a dog and $7 for a beer at the ballgame but $6 for a hot dog?  WTF?  Is it some sort of super-inbred line of by-products that were used to craft this thing?

So- I bought the damn thing but while I was on line I saw a lot of parents there with the younger ones- walking away with maybe $500 worth of snacks at a clip...   unreal.

The show was great, the theater is always great (unless it rains).  Go, enjoy the show - just don't go hungry!!

Summer is not summer on Long Island if you haven't been to a concert at Jones Beach Amphitheater. Well, Tommy Hilfiger Amphitheater. It's a venue unlike any other - three sides are completely surrounded by water.

Although it's a pain to get to (it's a long drive from most places), it's so worth going to a concert there. Most seats have a pretty good view, the venue is easy to get around, the bathrooms are for the most part clean and not as crowded as other venues, and parking isn't bad.

I also like  that it doesn't serve alcohol at events - nothing ruins a good concert like a bunch of unruly drunks near you.

The Jones Beach Theater is one of those magical venues that can create a spark no matter who is performing. It helpes, of course, that people who perform there are usually pretty cool. But it also helps that the venue itself is beautiful, romantic, personal... in other words, it has a definite vibe. Ah, the times when I've passed a certain something to a random neighbor... or the times I've made out with my girlfriend... all during a concert here.

The amphitheater is built facing the water, so the stage is framed by the bay. Often during the performance sailboats come right up to the side of the stage. It's a gorgeous setting for a concert. Once the sun goes down, you can look up and see the sky. Since the theater is outside of town (in fact, it's located in a recreational area that is protected from development), the stars are much brighter there than anywhere in the city.

The Jones Beach Theater has two types of performers: the nostalgia acts (Jethro Tall and Motley Crue have been known to play there) and great modern rock heroes like Pearl Jam and Tori Amos. Even though it's way out of the city and a pain to get to, it's always worth the trip! The seats slope, a little bit by the stage and sharply in the back, so that you can see the stage perfectly no matter where you are. The sound depends on the weather - the wind tends to carry it away - but that's a problem that faces all outdoors venues. Aside from depending on the weather, the acoustics are great.

Prices vary depending on the performer, starting in mid-range and going up from there. Some of the shows can get quite expensive. But even with prices going up, this is one of the most magical places I've ever been to.
