I came in last Saturday for dinner, and the food was awesome. WIfey had the honey chicken, and I opted for the coconut curry chicken. Both of us had some vino. I had a glass of the Cline Zin, and Mrs. Scott B. had a Cabernet.
Decent wine list, great food, and the service, just like the first visit, was good enough. Supposedly, a new location awaits here in the coming months...
When in Tyler, I'll make Julian's Asian Diner a regular stop. About as good as it gets.
I have been eating here for years, but had not been back since it was bought by new owners. Was worried that all my favorite dishes would have changed, but I was wrong. The food was fabulous!! I went here on a date with a hubby..
We started off our dining experience with an order of spring rolls, which was served quickly and were delicious! Also, ask for there fried wontons (these are good, and free.. not well known!) and dip them in the sauce that comes in the metal pot on the table.. Kind of like soy sauce, but a hint of sweetness.. For our meal we split the honey, garlic chicken and fried rice. Plenty big enough for us to split with the spring rolls. This chicken is so good!!!! Very tender and flavorful!!
I would recommend this place. It has low lighting and music going. Great for date night, girls night,. Have heard they have great drinks.
Disappointing. I've been a few times, and the food was terrible each time! It's over-priced, bland, and soggy. The service is poor as well. The waiters seem as if they have something else they'd rather be doing... It's difficult to get anyone's attention, even on a slow night. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone!
Review Source:This is a review that I did for TripAdvisor two years ago.
Let me begin by saying that I have eaten at 400 or 500 Asian restaurants in my 62 years including lots in China, Taiwan, San Francisco, and everywhere else I've visited. If I had to choose one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, it would be Asian. My wife and I also cook it frequently.
She and I have needed to go to Tyler recently to attend a concert series. We decided on Julian's last night as the place to have dinner before the show. The location is fine, and the restaurant sits across from what looks to be a nice bar area. However, the food was a massive disappointment. First the waiter put a bowl of soy-based sweet dipping sauce on the table along with a spoon. Strange, because nothing was served with it. Waiters put it on each table when the customer arrived, but there was nothing to use it on. Second, we only had main courses and the selection was pretty sparse. We chose Kung Pao Shrimp and Kung Pao Beef because they were one of the few offerings with a combination of vegetables and meat. We ordered our dishes spicy and with a side of "hot pepper oil". We shared dishes when they arrived. When we sampled each other's dishes, we both looked at each other and said "There is no taste!" and there wasn't (there was a tinge of grease though). There was no taste in either dish and there was no spice either. There was one dried Szechuan pepper thrown on top on each serving dish. The second observation is that for the price, there was very little food served on either dish and what was there was really bad. The beef (my dish) was sliced very thin and then cooked (deep fried without batter) to a crisp. Much of the meat was tough and all of it was flavorless. My wife's dish was the shrimp, and the shrimp was done in the same way. First, the shrimp was very small and it had been cooked to the place that it looked wrinkled and week-old. I have rarely been served shrimp so small and so unappetizing in any restaurant. They looked like 40-60 count shrimp bought at SAMS (they were the size of a nickle). The dishes were to have vegetables and they did, but we could only discern two vegetables. There were carrots which were sliced extremely small as through a motorized shredder, not julienned or cut finely with a knife or cleaver. Given the very dark soy-based sauce (which there was very little of also), if it had not been for the color of the carrots, you would have had a hard time telling they were mixed in. Then, incongruously, there were two or three huge snow peas dumped on top. Compared to the miniscule size of everything else in the dish, these were huge, and were thrown in for color. Unfortunately, snow peas have a "string" down one side which is usually removed by the chef before using, which is hard to eat. The strings were still there and it was hard to chew or you needed to remove the strings yourself.
Finally, I always like to order a side of hot pepper oil because we do like our food spicy and in Texas there is a reluctance to serve dishes really spicy regardless of how you ask for them because many of the locals don't like spicy food, and what I normally expect to be delivered is an oil, usually peanut oil, in which the chef has combined finely pulverized dried Szechuan peppers and heated to about 250 degrees and ends up a wonderful spicy reddish oil that can add real kick to any dish. The flavor is neutral so it doesn't distort the flavors of the dishes, just kicks them up a couple of notches. Here at Julian's, what we were served was instead, a tomato-based chili sauce similar to Huy Fong Foods "Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce" typically served in Thai or Vietnamese restaurants and which is indeed hot, but has a very strong taste of its own so it flavors any dish it is used rather than simply spicing it up without distorting the flavor. However, the meals were so flavorless as they were delivered, that it was a case of "any taste is better than no taste". We even drizzled some of the otherwise irrelevant soy dipping sauce served up front and used for nothing to add some taste to the dishes.
There is more, but that is enough. These were the least appetizing Chinese dishes that I have eaten in a long time. It is hard to believe that anyone who is an accomplished chef would put out food of this quality. Maybe they were having "problems in the kitchen" or maybe someone was standing in for the real chef that evening, but what a disappointment. My wife and I both gave the place a grade of "D" for the meal. I have eaten at converted-gas-station chinese restaurants in Shreveport, LA that served the same dishes that were three or four times better than these and charged half the fee for what they gave you that we would give great food and taste marks, and were excellent food (except for the surroundings). Wow, what a disappointment. Your experience or taste may vary, but this was very disappointing
I was visiting Tyler for the week and some friends took us to Julian's for dinner and some cocktails. There were a few vegetarian/vegan options and our dish and appetizers were good. I loved the martini menu and all of the drinks I had were very good. My only complaint is that our server kept trying to give us the check before we were ready to leave. In fact, we wanted to order more drinks. I can understand if they need to turn around the table if they busy but this was not the case. Only a few tables were taken in the restaurant. That does annoy me.
Review Source:Asian bistro. This joint was started by some ex-PF Changs people, and the menus is very similar. I would rate the food actually better than any PF Changs I have visited. The lettuce wraps are very good, but need iceberg lettuce to make them excellent. The spicy chicken always delivers. The joint has been deserted the last two visits. I wonder if this has anything to do with the owner bringing in a DJ and turning the place into a dance club for late night. Very lame, and however much I like the food, I can only go 3 stars.
Go for the food, not for quick service.
This is one of our go-to Tyler spots. The food is extremely Americanized, but the atmosphere is swanky and everything is tasty. They have a nice bar area with fun cocktails (this is rare in Tyler!), and the food is nearly as good as a PF Changs ! Service is hit or miss, but in Tyler I have yet to find a place with good service all the time....
Review Source:Don't let the fact that this restaurant is in shopping center turn you off. It's a great restaurant with good service and excellent food.
The bar area is swanky and very modern. The atmosphere is nothing like what you would expect based on it's location or it's exterior. Â This small restaurant has a lot of style and class while still feeling very casual. Â
I haven't found anything on the menu that I don't like. If you're feeling adventurous, then this is a great place to just pick something at random and order it. Several of my friends feel the same way.
