OMG!  The last place that I had great fish n chips was in Vancouver, BC.  Hands down the BEST fish n chips in the State!  Crisp and crunchy batter that's not heavy, and moist, buttery white fish with a light dill tartar sauce to compliment the dish.  Tell me I died and went to fish n chip heaven.

We also had the calamari basket and it didn't disappoint.  My sister had a Madras cocktail and although the waiter said he never made one before, he made it just right.

Let's be frank, the ambiance is not what you'd think looking at the outside facade.  It's a dive, a pseudo sports bar, and there are tons of beer on draft for you beer afficiados.  Still, it's somewhere you can go with jeans or shorts to hang out with friends and enjoy good food and drink. This is a good place as any.   Enjoy!

Update a week later.  Went back as my sister is a fish n chip afficiados. She loved the fish n chips!  I decided to try the Lamb Pastie.  Talk about extremes; the thrill of victory with the fish n chips, then the agony of defeat with that English Pastie.  Still enjoyed the fried calamari basket and madras cocktail!

Kailua pub, from the outside, seems like an upscale spot to get some grub. Upon entering you realize it's more of a dive bar, but don't let that scare you off! They seperate the sections from the pub and the grill, which is awesome because we had a toddler in tow not knowing that this was more of a dive.
The staff was helpful and friendly and our waitress told us to sit anywhere and asked us what we wanted to drink. The beer list is pretty extensive and so I got a brew that was kinda like a blue moon brewed with passion fruit instead of citrus; I loved it.
For apps we shared some calamari, cause my son is effing awesome and loves to eat calamari.
For dinner I chose the fish and chips, and they were DELICIOUS! I covered that basket in malt vinegar went to town on it.  My husband had the make your own pizza and he really really liked it.
I think this spot is great. If you're looking to hang with friends and knock back adult libations or just to get some cheap eats, Kailua Pub and Grill is a good choice.

Been here 3 times and I have always enjoyed the food.  The beer selection is good but if you choose a beer that doesn't sell often the beer tastes off, either from unclean lines/taps or stagnant beer.  But I'll keep going back.

Good eats, good beer selection, and nice bartenders help you forgive the smell in the pub.  Wifey and I dubbed it "the stinky pub" but kept going.  UNTIL MOTHER'S DAY.  Big banner outside said food & drink specials starting at 8am.  Signs in the bathrooms on Saturday said the same thing.  Places fill up quick on Mom's day in Kailua, so we got there at 8:05.  Walked thru the rain... main door: locked.  Walked back to the car.  I decided to try the pub door.  Walked back thru the rain: locked.  Saw a girl in uniform-looking clothes walking to the main door.  I asked if they were open.  "We open at 9."  "But your big banner on the roof says 8, so do the signs in the bathrooms".  (Girl replies matter-of-factly) "Oh, they're wrong."  And she knocks on the door and slips inside.  You try telling your hungry, mimosa-craving wife she's out of luck!  We wound up trying that little burrito place across the street from the library.  Great breakfast burritos.  So thanks, pub, for helping us find a new place!

Husband works in bars so he would never humor me to try the food here....some how or another I managed to get him to say "Ok, lets go ALREADY"  NOW he wants to go there alll the time.  Let me tell ya..he feels like a ding dong!  I have no idea what the bar is like but everything we've ordered thus far on the dining side has been just FAB considering its freakn' BAR fare!   Loved their Reuben....great fries, yummo crispy fish and their SLIDERS are delishioso!  Only thing is... the space is dusty and feels kind of dirty...We dont hang out, we just eat and go!  LOL.

Found this place by after hanging out at Lanikai beach with my girlfriend on vacay! We were hungry and looking for a good happy hour place so I yelped and saw that this place had good reviews. Our server Ryan was awesome! Recommended a really good beer, called Shandy, that I loved! Very fruity! They seemed to have a good selection of beers on tap, including Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, which is one of my all time favorites, and kind of hard to find;) Ordered the potato skins for an app- super yummy! Also had the pizza with pepperoni with mushrooms; however I thought pepperoni was way too thick and super salty- almost like salami! That was my only complaint. Overall a great place to stop for a bite and cocktail after a day of hanging out at Lanaiki and Kailua beach:)

Had a few solid drinks here before heading across the street to Casablanca. Good place to pregame before heading somewhere else.

I've driven by this place for years and finally had the opportunity to try it. Had lunch on the bar side, which is dark and like your typical (I assume) pub. Ordered a pastrami sandwich which was greasy but fine for a pastrami Sammie in hawaii. What I really loved was the Bloody Mary. Not too thick, and just the right amount of spice.

    Update time!

Wife and I snuck away for lunch here.

It was noon on a weekday and it was hard to tell from the street if this place was open. A sign would be nice.

The place was not that crowded, probably not a good sign.

Beer? No thanks, I'm on the clock. I'll have a pastie.

Out of pasties? You've been out for my last 3 visits. Maybe take them off the menu.

Scattered waitress takes our menus so I have to wait to reorder. I'll do a burger.

We sat close to the serving heat lamps.

Nothing is more painful that watching your ready food get cold under the lamps when the waitress is right there watching the same thing.

The patties are too big making the burger dry as they have to overcook it.

Wife's dish is good, she ordered local moco.

We wait forever for the bill. The waitress is still scattered.

After this dining experience, I think I need a beer.

Our intention was to eat at mokes but saw the line and wanted to eat right away so we decided to eat here since its right across the street. But  We probably could have waited for a table and gotten our food faster at mokes than at this place.  We ordered just the eggs, rice and bacon. I ordered fried rice but when it came out it was just brown rice and mushy brown rice on top of that.  The food was meh.

I will give it the benefit that they dont specialize in breakfast food so my advice dont go hungry and dont go for breakfast.

This place is nice when it's not crowded. The place is pretty small but most of the time I find a place to sit with friends. The potato skins are good and some of their live bands are pretty cool. It can get loud so not too good of a place to chat on Friday night, but they have good drinks and not bad prices.

Good beer selection for a good price too, great food - had the patty melt (hand-made patty) service is a little slow, but not bad at all.  Fun chill atmosphere on the grill side, pub side good for drinks afterwords.

Kailua Town Pub and Grill has a very extensive beer and food menu. The food is better than the average bar food. Try the French dip...it's delicious!

I don't know if the restaurant changed management or owners because the quality of this establishment has gone from a 4.5 to a 1. We ordered one of their burgers where the center was completely raw. The Fish and Chips which used to be excellent has become substantially smaller, with more batter than fish, and excessively oily.

    #October31Challenge 7/31 @YelpHawaii

I think a total gem on the Windward side. Not the most spectacular in terms of culinary creativity - but food that hits the spot after a long day at the beach and when you just want a beer paired with ono-bar-grindz.

The GOOD: On the "Grill" side you get a nice feel of the room - definitely "pubby" but clean. Booths are available and give you almost a sense of privacy - meaning you don't have people peering over to see what you're eating - not that it matters, food isn't that spectacular. The staff is tolerable, they are super friendly and smiling all the time, but they tend to forget a lot of stuff because they're usually chatting away. At least that has been my experience.

The BAD: Aside from forgetful servers, the food is simple - which is what you SHOULD expect from a pub slash grill. It's just the only "bad" thing I can find. Looking for amazing eats here is like trying to get fresh air on the moon. The food is bar food and that shouldn't be forgotten. For bar food its actually pretty good and edible. After a morning at the beach, we stopped in for a quick brunch/lunch. I ordered Eggs Benedict. It was ... what it was, but on a light note - they knew how to poach a damn egg, which I have seen far more elegant restaurants fu*k that up as if it were an olympic sport.

OVERALL: think little, get big. Be surprised and don't expect too much out of a Pub/Grill. The food to me was good, and the alcohol was available - sounds like a WIN-WIN in terms of Bar Standards.

Food is ok for a pub. I do like their wings and the server was really nice to accommodate  me changing the menu around to make my dinner a little healthier. She came around every few minutes to check on us and was really nice. Their sit-down side of the restaurant is a little bit small so if you come in for dinner you might have to wait for a table. Their bar is always crowded and if you come for Sunday Football then you better come early because you won't find any empty seat.

Decent beer selection and good bar food.

I like this place because its close to where I live and offers a pub feel. It can get crowded and naturally noisy at times, but if that's what you're looking for then you have found your place.

Fish and Chips are a popular choice, the French Onion Soup is awesome, and the personal pizzas are a good cheap choice if you're on a budget.

Choose from their massive selection of draft beer and full bar for the complete Pub experience.

We love the addition of this bar to Kailua!  One of the only places that serves fish and chips the correct way:  with Vinegar!  Being a local guy, I was never introduced to vinegar on my battered fish before.  It was great!
Be careful on the weekends at this bar.  They have live bands, which attract a younger, military and college crowd.  Drunks, fights, and stupidity.

Ok,  Kailua Town Pub & Grill is a winner for me and I'll tell you why..
But first, know that this was first experience. With that said, I'd say this is a fair review.

My partner and I were tired and drawn out from a good day's work in Koneohe
and remembered a co-worker mention this place. It's a nice, old styled pub atmosphere with options. I.e. , they have a bar in the rear for the rough types in the back, ( just kidding), they all looked pretty civil while we were there.
Anyway, the tv's were spaced out like a sports bar and it was pretty comfortable for a pub. We ordered $5.00 pints of Guiness, one hamburger deluxe, and one Reuben sandwich, which we spit.

The hamburger was smallish, BUT, very think and took some stretching to get my mug to around it. The weight was there !
The medium cooked burger was very good. cooked to perfections with all the fixings dressing it. The fry's were decent also, but nothing to write home about.

Now  the Reuben came toasted with a decent amount of corned beef as most reuben should. It was a bit on the sour side as far as reuben go. I prefer them with more dressing on the sweet side and rye bread more crispy and pan fried with swiss cheese you can really taste. It's really hard to find an awesome reuben.
I would probably try it again with extra cheese and sauce.

Our waitress seemed pretty new there but, I'm going to give her an' A" for effort, and her coworker was very supportive by backing her up.

In case you didn't notice my profile, I'll mention that I write my reviews on foods for a person(s) on a budget. My partner and I aren't the stuffy type, so we do appreciate the service and tip fairly.

BTW: The pictures don't really look like the dishes I saw. If these were mine, I'd shoot them from angle so you see the "profile".

Any way, next time I think we'll try the fish and chips !

back again baby!!  Fish n Chips and my new fav Snake Bite (Guinness with apple cider).  Service was quick and awesome.  Atmosphere was hip hop, smoothed out on an RnB tip with a pop feel, appeal to it...sorry was listening to BBD before we parked.  Kailua is really showing its foodie side.  I swear you can go down that side and eat all your meals within a 1 mile radius from the pub.

What do you want people? They call themselves a Pub & Grill and that's exactly what they are. They serve alcohol and food. Its not great and the water from the bar tastes like sulfur but lets be serious nobody was expecting much, were they? Its a BAR!

Came here after an afternoon of beach time and it was packed! Lots of TVs, tables, and beer on tap! We also go the chicken nachos which came out with each chip having cheese, jalepenos, sour cream, and chicken instead of a pile of chips and cheese and chicken. I like nachos served this way--then each chip has stuff on it instead of a mound of chips with the top having stuff and the bottom of the pile just plain chips! :)

OK, so we are here pretty much a lot nowdays..

What can I say, this place is like your friendly neighborhood pub.   The bartenders are friendly, the drinks are decent, and the service is efficient.

It's definitely a place where you see a blend of people of locals and military alike.

It's got two rooms to party.  One is where you can sit down and have a more intimate dinner, while the other room is where you get your party on.  It's decked out with a full-service bar, stools, and small tables to hang out and enjoy your drinks  and food.   As the night progresses the bar gets louder and livelier.   The music is pretty decent too.

The food: I've had the pleasure of trying a few things off their menu.  First off- the pizza.  It was pretty good.  Thin-crust with fresh veggies on top and cheesy cheese that melts in your mouth.  Also, I've had the fish and chips which is a popular item here.  I thought it was too oily for my taste but it goes well with a cold beer.   The last time I was there I ordered the shrimp tempura.  Fried shrimp in tempura batter, accompanied by a bed of cabbage and a sweet sauce to dip it in.

The alcohol: I don't really care for licquor nowdays, but I did try a gin n tonic which was nothing special.  My friend had the cranberry vodka and said was yummy.  Also, the girls I was with ordered some shots.  The blowjob was strong and so were a couple of other shots, I do not recall the names to.  Not because I was wasted but because I would much rather have one of their blue moons on draft! So for all you beer lovers- their selection of beers on draft is pretty awesome.

    Check this place out!

I've read many of the reviews, anund quite a range of "love it" to "hate it" ...

I did not go in the restaurant part of the place, only the bar, so take that into account when you read mine.

I really think the difference between the LOVE IT and the HATE IT reviews probably comes down to the reviewer's age, and at what time of day (evening/night) they went in. I'm not one to typically go to a bar by myself, but as I'm in Kailua dog sitting for 3 weeks, I needed to go somewhere and meet people, so I went to the Pub.

My experience was good, but I really think it had to do with who I met. I was welcomed to the bar by a regular (another single woman like myself) who happened to know everyone at the bar.

I went during happy hour, on a Saturday about 4pm, which had the bar filled with regulars, people 40-60 years old.  If a 20 something were to come in looking for their kind of scene, this wasn't it. The gal I met told me that she leaves by 8pm because that's when the younger crowd starts coming in and it gets loud. (which isn't to say it was quiet when I was there)

The girls behind the bar ... because it was happy hour and all the regulars knew them, they were friendly enough and joking. If I had been in there on my own, I can see where/how I could well have been passed over and thought they were not so friendly.  I was charged $3 for a beer (happy hour price) and then $3.50 for the same beer (different bartender), and $4 on a different day. I don't think they have a real firm price ... seems to me that sometimes I was given the 'locals' price, other times the 'real' price.  $4 a beer isn't a bad price, particularly in Kailua.

All and all, I give them the 4 stars because they met my expectations. It's a bar, they serve food, and it gets loud.  Oh, Tuesday was $1 taco night - I have no idea if it is advertized, but all the regulars knew it ... (and told me, so guess where I had dinner?)

On the  night we were there we were very lucky and got a seat immediately.  The waitress was very attentive and the food came quickly.

For bar food, the quality was on the upper end of the scale.  There were also some unique tastes on the menu and all of the food was well prepared.

We tried a number of the specialty beers and found them to be very good as well.

I suspect if we had gone on a Fri or Sat nite, that we may have had to wait, but Sunday night was just fine, with plenty of seats available.

2 words describing this place: Country Music! 'nough said, def not my scene. When I heard they had a live band playing that night, I was essited bc I thought of at least a rock band.. Turned out to be like 4 guys playing banjos lol

HOLD UP, you smell that? It's the smell of fresh barf! Those were my words when I walked in here. Also, some guy was drinking his brew and breaks the bottle in his hand while drinking it, like wtf? Is that supposed to be intimidating? I will never know

I basically payed the $5 cover just to take a leak and have a souvenir wrist band, smhhh. Everyone was clearly intoxicated, so if ya wanna try your luck w the drunk girls there just make sure they don't gots a man, or they'll crush you like that bottle

We got seated quickly. Our food and drinks came out quickly. The food was cheap.
Mostly a haole crowd here (duh it's Kailua). I would say the average age was 30 something y/o. The band wasn't great.
The place is small, dingy, and really noisy (not only because of the band but also because of noisy type patrons this place somehow attracts).
My mixed drinks were cheap, my beer not so much.

In spite of all that, I give it 2 stars because it was just mehhh. I can't even believe this place has 4 stars.

The service was lousy. Our server rushed us the moment we were seated... no customer service skills. She came off as rude. She had to keep asking another server for answers to our questions about the menu. The other server was rude too but maybe she was just annoyed with our server who didn't know anything. She ended up charging our card more than the actual bill.

All I have to say is if you don't want a shitty review, then don't have shitty workers represent your place of business.

My husband and I come here pretty often. Sometimes we just swing by around 4-5 pm right before the drinking/partying crowd comes in. (It can get a bit packed with military guys getting their DRINK ON!)

It's pretty small place divided into two areas. One section has the bar and has a ton of tv's to watch sports while the other section is more of a dining room.

We tend to come for drinks and pupu's. I love their fish and chips! You get this huge piece of fish cooked very well. Sometimes it does come out a little oily though. Wish they would drain the fish a little bit better.

Their sliders are pretty good, along with the pizza. They run out of their dough pretty often though.

My husband always gets the steak. (he's a steak fanatic!) It can be a hit or miss here. Sometimes it's good, sometime not (under cooked or overcooked)

We sometimes come on Saturday mornings to get some breakfast and watch early football games. They have cheap breakfasts. I love their eggs benedict!! English muffin topped with turkey, spinach, tomato, poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. DELIGHTFUL! Sides I usually get are hash browns and wheat toast.

Fun, quality controlled bar perfect for watching NFL games in a relaxing environment.  The bar capacity is 45 (we had the corner table near the entrance & were practically under the official declaration).  Met a few friends there for playoffs and liked the intimate yet casual atmosphere.  They had domestics for $2.50 and typical bar food at reasonable prices too.

The crowd was mixed, mostly with locals that  live in the area and know each other.  Also noticed they were mostly older and with age comes maturity and less beer sloshing and aggressive womanizing behavior.  Usually.  I was just happy to nurse my domestic beer and watch GB shut down ATL since I had a "winner makes the loser do something embarrassing" bet riding on it.  A few guys also took bets for a pool @ $10 per head which made it a little more interesting & the guy that won the pool even bought me & my friends 2 rounds of beer to share the luv.  And that's just the kind of people that are fun to be around ; )

Had to dock a star though b/c there were 3 shift changes while we were watching ONE game.  One game is barely FOUR hours.  Not sure what type of shifts they're bookin in the bar but c'mon.  That's a little intense.  In all fairness to our waitress(es), we closed out our tab each time but that got to be really old.  Overall, I'd definitely return!

After being kidnapped for a half-day tour of North Shore, I was quite hungry.  My friend and I ordered four appetizers and shared them all: the sliders, fish and chips, plain cheese pizza, and buffalo wings.  All appetizers were great, particularly the sliders.  It was good beef and topped with caramelized onions.

The prices were very reasonable, most burgers/sandwiches + fries were under $10.  They seem to have a pretty good selection of beer as well.

I don't agree with all the bad ratings. Then again, we only stopped in for a couple celebratory drinks and didn't order any food and we weren't sitting in the restaurant section either. A couple of guys that also sat at the bar  got their food within 10-15 mins of sitting down, which I thought was a reasonable wait time for their burgers and quesadillas.

I wanted to stop by to check out their Bloody Mary ($6.50). My friend Donna speaks highly of it so I wanted to see for myself. When we got there Carrie (our bartender) and another waitress (I didn't catch her name) greeted us with a smile and showed us to the bar area.

The Bloody Mary was tasty, strong and made from scratch, none of that premix stuff. I liked that she sprinkled additional salt on the top of my drink. The only bummer was that their diet coke had a fruity taste to it, and it was little flat. I wished that they carried Level Vodka, but they at least had Ketel so no biggie.

I have mixed feelings about the pub.  On one hand, I love the $6 burger and fries combo.  The burger is like a real, homemade beef burger and it is huge.  Fries are good too.  On the other hand, the service is terrible.  We have been many times because we like the pub atmosphere and cheap prices, but the food takes forever most of the time.

The pizza is just okay, nothing special.  The ceasar salad is a huge portion but don't forget to ask for light dressing - otherwise the lettuce will be drowning in ceasar dressing.

The fish and chips is great.  Then again it's hard to screw up a plate of fried food right?

Overall, I'll go back - when I have a lot of time to wait!

If I could give a negative star, I would. This place, I have attempted to try to patronize over and over again. Largely because I like the bar atmosphere, it reminds of a local pub in Chicago. And technically, if prepared correctly, the food is good too. But you have to be able to wait up to an hour after FINALLY placing the order to eat it. The cooks are obviously in need of an intervention, because they MUST be high while working. No one else moves that slow without a bong hit!

They ask you "how do you want your burger" for NO REASON. They cook em all very dead. The fish and chips is yummy, but last time I waited 45 minutes, only to walk in the back to confront the cook myself and find he was just battering the fish. That was my last visit sober.

Avoid this place if you can. If you order food, make sure the bartender who seems overwhelmed with 5 patrons gets the order to the cook, and bring smelling salts in case you need to wake one of them!

I have to say I've been very bummed at how the service at the pub has slowly amounted to pathetic.
I've been frequent to the pub less and less often over the months. How is it that with such an inconsistency of workers that they, themselves don't go crazy?

I've had to be told breakfast would be over in 20 minutes so I couldn't order it or lunch until 11:30. WTF?

I've sat and been sat at 2 or more tables once during my meal to move for bigger parties. Unprofessional.

My food has taken over 45 minutes to an hour due to the cook 'making a mistake' on it.

My water glasses have always had some floating resadue.

    Silverware un clean. Napkins filthy.

My waiter or waitress isn't famaliar with food modifications or what's in or on the food.

Unset tables and un refilled waters.

And for some reason, none of my servers ever cared.

Disapointing since the food, prices, beer selections and atmospere is very wonderful and delicious. Makes me want to return yet doesn't.

If your in the mood for a mainland style pub, in Kailua, this is it. We sat at a table in the bar because the wait was 30 min in the 'restaraunt' section. Had a few beers, some pretty decent bar food, and it was fairly inexpensive.

I'm fact, the fish and chips were really good... pub style if you're looking for a change from the island style fish and chips that you find elsewhere.

We went at 6:30 pm on a Saturday, no idea what to expect. Got the last booth available. Never did get water. Had to ask for napkins. The wait staff was really working hard- management needs to get a few more on board. The beer took forever to come and then tasted stale. We got the sliders: EXCELLENT! It was a lot of meat, tasty grilled onions. The fries came about twenty minutes later, too hot to eat. By the time we left the place was PACKED! Who knew, here in Kailua!

Worst aspect of the evening: the sound system was way overloaded with perfectly awful faux-metal thumping headache generating drivel. When you've got to wait for your food, at least couldn't there be some music on the system worth listening to that's not distorted to oblivion?

If you're looking for a place to drink and hang & be noisy with your peeps, this place is not too bad. If you just want a quick meal and a relaxing hour in a pub, fuggadaboutit.

I have to completely disagree with all the 1 star comments. Couldnt be further from the truth. I will give you my review of the Bar & The Restaurant.

    Bar:

Its got a nice little Irish Pub vibe with a full wrap around bar. I actually first thought the bar was huge because the mirror inside on the back, makes it look massive but truth be told, its a small inside bar area and its not built for really moving around, just for sitting down and getting your drink on.

On that note, that is my biggest grip about the Bar area. I wish there was room for extra curricular activities like: Pool, Darts etc.

Other than that, the vibe is nice, and when its packed, its PACKED and there isnt much room to move.

    Restaurant:

All the complaints to me just seem ridiculous. I went today with the girl I am dating and we were greeted by a very polite waiter. Sat and instantly waited on. We ordered the Chicken Bacon Cheddar Burger and The English Fish & Chips.

I was first amazed at how cheap the prices were so I was thinking the portions would be small. I WAS WRONG.

Her burger was MASSIVE and came with a grip of fries to accompany the meal. She could only finish half and that was ok for me cause I brought it home to eat, and its delicious. The cheddar is melted all over the chicken and just makes my mouth water.

My Fish & Chips was EXCELLENT. Two large fried Mahi Mahi fillets that just melted in my mouth. The quality of fish was great and serious, the fish was like butter. So good. I love the fries too, salted perfectly.

Our bill for our meal was $15 without tax so I gave the waiter a 25% tip because the food was excellent, the service was very friendly and its a new business, so I know they are growing and to let everyone know, this is the first time they have done food. When they were "The Tropics" it was only drinks. So if you had a bad food experience, I think its worth another shot because ours was awesome.

I went to this place with my brother in law and we were both shocked at how bad this place was. We had to wait 40 minutes before anyone even talked to us. Then another 40 minutes for our food that was not only lame, but different from what we had ordered.

You know, even if the service had been good I would still criticize this place because the food was just terrible. Run while you can.
