I don't frequent bars, but occasionally I love to enter dimly lit places that smell like a poker game from the 1940's, sit in the (almost) dark, and have a good drink. Â I don't care if the place isn't modern and fancy, I just care that I won't die from some weird flesh-eating virus because it isn't clean. Â This doesn't happen there, so win-win!
I was having one of those days, and I just wanted to have a few drinks (and not go broke doing it) while playing a few bar games. Â The machine at the bar's corner was unoccupied so I had a seat and ordered a drink. Â The bartender was friendly and attentive (there were quite a few people there so I was impressed that he kept up and managed to do so with a smile), and I felt very welcome. Â I sat there for nearly two hours and never felt bothered or neglected. Â They had a decent menu, but I went simple and I tried the mozzarella stix. Â Not bad! Â (Not that you can truly mess up mozz stix, but I digress).
My chair was ripped and the bar will never win a beauty contest, but my bill was cheap, my glass was always refilled, and even though there were a few cosmetic things that could have benefited from some lipstick (I'm referring to my chair, I'm a chick, we nitpick!), I wouldn't hesitate to go there again. Â
The smoke can get overwhelming if you aren't used to it, but if you're there for the drinks, breathe through your mouth! ;-)
A few friends who used to work at Cheers (a short walk from The Kerryman) have begun to hang out here, so I imagine I'll be hanging out here a little bit more than I'd like to. I was here on Thurs. for a little while to hang out with them and to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had fun and I can't complain about anything, though I definitely prefer Cheers. The staff here is friendly and the drinks and prices are good. For whatever reason, this just is not one of my favorite places. (See my original review, which is more specific.) I'm upping my review from 2 stars to 3 since it likely isn't as bad as I originally made it out to be, and perhaps it will grow on me a little bit more if I come here more often, which is entirely possible ... if my friends decide to keep hanging out here. We'll see. I can take or leave this place, and most others might agree. Check it out with tempered expectations - there are nicer places in the area, but there certainly are worse as well.
Also, don't be alarmed by the Pinhead picture - as far as I can tell, he does not work here. Thank God.
The Kerryman is a very chill place where you can grab a drink with some friends or play some pool and darts. Â They have great drink specials including a "Guys Night" on Wednesdays!
I really love this bar because it is owned by a local who you can often find hanging out playing poker on Thursday nights. Â There are tons of familiar faces here if you come often and the prices are good as well. Â All in all a solid choice and not what I would call a hole in the wall!
