Not kid friendly!!!!  My family and I visited this restaurant with my two year old twin boys.  We were the only people in the restauranta  . The staff seemed friendly at first, but when my boys (who are very well behaved) were finished eating they got out of their high chairs and were standing by our table behind the adult chairs.  The owner sent out her waitress to tell us that the boys needed to sit down as it was a liability for the restaurant.  Basically, we were asked to leave.  No, my kids weren't sitting in their high chairs, but they are two, there was no one else in the place, and they weren't climbing on or destroying anything.  I was very offended and considering the food was overpriced and not very good, I will never visit this establishment again.
Review Source:The folks at Kim's have it going on! Â We walked into this place blind without knowing anything about it and were pleasantly surprised by the experience!
For starters Kim's is located at the end of the Coupeville Pier - amazing location to sit outside and people watch and/or take in the beautiful scenery! Â
Our waiter was extremely helpful in directing and guiding us on what to eat. Â We all tried something a little different. Â We had one member of our party who was allergic to shell fish so they really looked out for her and made sure she was taken care of. Â
The chef is from Vietnam and her dishes are AMAZING! Â All the seafood is fresh - but make sure when you place your order they have enough if you want to try the local muscles from Penn Cove Bay - because they do run out, but if you get the chance to try them - DO IT!
My husband had the Vietnamese sub-sandwich and shared the Chowder which was outstanding! Â I tried one of the Vietnamese Seafood Stews with the Penn Cove Bay muscles which was spicy but not too spicy.
Service couldn't have been any friendlier or accommodating, our waiter really looked after us and made our afternoon even better.
A hopeful two stars.
All aspects combined, and based off of yelp's helpful little italicized hint next to the stars "meh." sums it up.
First, i am not one who treasures the authentic nature of a food over how tasty it is. Â The idea of what is really "authentic" is kind of laughable when you think of it. Â The same dish may be prepared a number of different ways per region of its home location. Â I guess what i am trying to say is that most people who claim authenticity (or lack thereof) of a food often have no idea what they are talking about. Â I say this because of all the foods i have encountered, Pho seems to be the one with the deepest trenches dug when it comes to how authentic it is.
I could give a damn
I just want it to taste good.
We stopped here around 2 on a Wednesday. Â The place was deserted but it was also an overcast and dreary june day (the brilliant people of the down i reside in, Oak Harbor, really put an amazing brain trust together, this brain trust was brought together to answer the question that nobody has ever asked, nor has really cared about. That question was: "What is Oak Harbor's Motto???? Dollars were spent, signs were erected, billboards blotted out the clouds... Our motto?? "looks like an oak harbor kind of day". Â Once you are done laughing i am sure you will agree that an "oak harbor kind of day" is about 50 deg, overcast, wet, with high winds. Â We treasure our 15 +/- 5 days of rationed sunlight, clutching our bottles of vitamin D with anticipation. Â In closing, the people who thought of this motto should be brought out to the tide flats on one of our "oak harbor kind of days" lashed to pier blocks, and fed to crabs) so that may have had something to do with it.
The menu is pretty deep, lots and lots of things to choose from. Â I ordered beef Pho and while it was expensive, and the bowl was quite small, it was not half bad, i will not be driving out here for it specifically when i can get better i oak harbor, but i may swing by to try some other things on the menu. Â
I may be wrong, and if i am i will GLADLY change my tune, but this place seems like it deals mostly in thawing out mostly premade frozen things than a more home made kind of feel. Â I know it is hard to draw the line with something like that, but i wonder if i ordered an egg roll if it would have been constructed there, or if it was brought out of a box earlier that day?
We had a problem with the coffee, more specifically the half and half served with the coffee, the small little single servings were clotted and looked like they had gone south. Â We brought this up with the server who claimed she had seen this issue earlier with the cream but was reluctant to throw the batch out. Â We both have pretty good tolerances to things like that, but two coffees had to be brought back before we just asked for some half and half on the side from a normal container. Â
The place was clean, cute, and has potential, i was just largly unimpressed by most everything else especially considering the price.
Took my little brother and parents to Whidbey Island on a Sunday for a day hike to Ebey's Landing in late August. Â We saw this cute little restaurant at the end of the wharf. Â The food was much better than I would have expected given the other reviews on this site. Â My dad's was the best. Â He had shrimp and vegetable stir fry. Â The shrimp were tasty, plump and not overcooked, and the vegetables were crispy and good quality. Â My mother had the pho, and while I am not a pho connoisseur, she is a very picky eater and yet ate the whole bowl. Â My fish and chips were very hot and crispy, but nothing out of the ordinary. Â My little brother had a salmon salad which looked good enough. Â If I had any criticism, the service was a little slow. Â There was a deck but it was too drizzly and gray to go outside, although I would suspect it would be lovely out there on a clear sunny day.
Review Source:My rating is actually 1.5 stars. The restaurant is nice and clean and the staff is pretty nice as well. One star is for the cleanliness and staff. The half star is due to the food.
The reason for the low score is because we came here only to eat the pho. And well, what a HUGE disappointment. First of all, it is WAY too overpriced for such a small bowl of pho. Second, the beef was not thinly cut as the way all other Vietnamese restaurants do it. Third, the noodles are not traditional pho noodles. They pretty much were fettuccine noodles. Lastly and most importantly, the soup was so bland. This is where pho gets its amazing flavors and taste. It's ALL about the broth and when the broth isn't right, the whole bowl isn't right. And that's exactly what happened here. It tasted like the broth wasn't cooked for hours and hours to bring out the flavors and it also tasted like they skimped on half of the ingredients. The broth just was not deep and bold enough to make any lasting statement. It lacked the many layers of intricate flavors that pho is supposed to have.
If you want to eat a good, satisfying, and amazing bowl of pho- skip Kim's cafe. It's worth the couple of hours of travel to make it to Seattle and eat at a Vietnamese restaurant that knows how to do it right.
This was our first visit to Coupeville. We happened to have lunch at Kims last week (FEB 2010) and to my surprise the food was sooo delicious. We ordered a fish n chips, Chicken Vietnamese sub , thai dish(in chicken not sure the exact name) veg pannini. Everything tasted soo good n fresh(not to miss the Vietnamese sub n thai). Service was very nice and the view from the wharf was amazing. We sat outdoors on the benches and overall it was a great experience. I will definitely want to go back to coupeville for Kim's cafe
Review Source:I suggest sticking with the pho soup since that what everyone here is writing about. Â We've sent folks there and have heard reviews all over the map. Â
Our experience was blah. Â I would not suggest the American dishes like fish and chips and burgers - we had them in our group and they were generic - like if you bought them at the snack bar on the ferry.
We had two Asian dishes - the phad thai was like no phad thai I've ever had - very pale and salty. Â My wifes dishes was noodles and vegetables but again the seasoning was off.
Great location at the end of the wharf.
We were recently visiting Coupeville (where I lived for almost ten years) and were very keen to try Kim's. I used to love going out to the wharf for some great Southeast Asian cooking at Long's, but since she quit the restaurant game the restaurants that have opened in her former space have all failed, mainly due to failure to cultivate the local market which is vital to the survival of any business on the island during the off-season. Kim's opened back in February, and it has already earned a healthy buzz among the locals. I'm happy to report that the food is excellent. We sampled the excellent salad rolls and egg rolls, served with delicious peanut and hot-and-sour sauces, and moved on to the beef pho, as good as any I've had in authentic hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese pho joints in the Bay Area or Vancouver BC, and the tom yam kung, a hot and sour soup with prawns and mixed vegetables, which was rich with chili oil and immensely flavorful. The menu includes not only a good selection of Thai and Vietnamese dishes but also the more usual waterfront fare of burgers and fried seafood, plus a good list of west-coast microbrews and local wines. Add the fact that they serve not only indoors but also on the picnic tables outside on the wharf deck, with stunning views of Penn Cove and Mount Baker (which none of the restaurants on the wharf since Long's time have done), and you have a real winner. And they do takeout, too! Â Highly, highly recommended! Thanks, Kim and Randy!
Review Source:The best Pho ever and its on our little island. A big bowl of intense flavors awaits at Kim's on the Wharf. There is a wide variety on their menu and one can still get fish n chips or a burger along with the amazing asian fusion choices. What a great addition to this little town. We had perfect food and fantastic service, plus our favorite Mirror Pond beer. Can't wait to go back!
Review Source:You can get pho in Coupeville now! Â Kim has a very cute and inviting cafe on the Coupeville Wharf that defies where it's location might suggest it to be. Â It's not a terrible place that depends on the ignorance of tourists to stumble in, but is a very nice place that locals are discovering to be a place to come back to time and again. Â
It is right on the scenic Coupeville Wharf, just up the gangplank from the guest dock, so this place is just as accessible to boaters as it is landlubbers. Â I can't imagine anything better than a hot bowl of pho or one of Kim's Thai styled Tom Yam soups to warm you up after a day of sailing on Penn Cove. Â While they have burgers, fries and all the usual tourist fare, she also has the local mussels, and a variety of asian specialties that are especially tasty. Â
Whether you are boating your way up to the San Juans, or checking out the tourist shops of Coupeville, get out to the end of the Wharf to dine at Kim's, and you won't be disappointed.
