It would be inaccurate to say I was completely turned off by the food here, but I was happy to leave and expect never to return. There is simply no reason to stop in at La Cebollita with so many better options all around Pilsen. The food lacked flavor--even with a very heavy dose of salsa--except for the taste of oil. ¡Guácala! The one thing going for this place was the horchata. Let's just say they didn't skimp on the sugar or cinnamon, both of which are key to a tasty horchata.
Review Source:I must be missing something. Â Everything I tried I did not like, with the exception of the agua de tamarindo. Â The gordita was super greasy and it came with only lettuce and tomato (beside the filling, of course) - anything else was "extra"$$. Â The tamales were definitely not the best in Pilsen - if anything, something was off - the masa had a strange consistency... I could only eat 1/2 of one. Â I thought it was odd that you had a choice of EITHER rice or beans with a meal (???) when most Mexican restaurants give you a bit of both. Â I did not like either of the salsas that came with the (kind of stale) chips - but those were complimentary so I won't harp too much on that. Â
I don't know ... maybe it's just me??? Â Well, I don't think I will be returning, cause I just don't get it...
In my opinion, this is one of the better places to eat Mexican food without being overpriced or overcrowded. (Nuevo Leon).
La Cebollita's in house green salsa is of the chizz-ain! Sometimes I think about the salsa before going to sleep to soothe me. Seriously its that good.  Pour some on your Torta or tacos al pastor  and you got yourself a freakin' 4 star meal at pushcart prices..
It's BYOB too so you you can get some wine or some Grey Goose and get LIT!
...I will however complain about the Chilanga Burger. EPIC FAILBURGER! The beef patty is soggy and its basically a whole bunch of everything on top of each other.
I do not recommend it..You can't expect for a Mexican Restaurant to make a good hamburger anyway...which is why I didn't take away a star.
..other than the busted ass hamburger, La Cebollita is a great place to eat while in Pilsen! 5 Stars all the way!
I came back here with a friend, I loved their horchata (some of the best I've had)! I tried a tamale, two different gorditas (bean and cheese and meat). While I like trying different things on the menu, when I come back, I know I'll be getting another gordita, it was perfect and really tasty!
Their tamales are good, a little dry, but I'm also not the biggest tamale person. The restaurant itself is clean, bright and friendly. Â Good job guys, see you soon!
Some dishes hit the mark, others did not.
Hits:
- Rice and beans
- Tamales
- Tortillas
- Carne Asada
Misses:
- Chiles Rellenos: Sauce too bland! Â I'm not a fan of having to salt it myself to get the flavor I want.
- Enchiladas: Another reviewer said it right, they lay there like crepes for some reason. Â The tortillas could not stand up to the strong red sauce, and it just became a dark red mess. Â Too bad.
- Pozole: I wanted to love this, but something was just missing in the broth. Â Perhaps because we ordered it too early on a Saturday, but the flavors were not mixing and melding as they should, which meant it was spicy but watery at the same tim, not the hmm hmm goodness you are looking for.
This was a clean, fast, and friendly place to eat. Â The avocado soft shell corn tacos were good but not fantastic. Â My hubby's vegetarian burrito was huge but again good and not great. Â The rice was tasty. Â The refried beans, typical. Â The free tortilla chips were the spicy kind and definitely not homemade. Â They were good but I can buy those in a bag. Â There were two kinda of salsa. Â I don't think either was homemade but both were very good. The price for two dinners and a coke was $15. Â Beat that! Â All in all a solid, reliable meal. Â No surprises but nothing outstanding. Â We did not have the tamales, but I would go back to try them. Â Also, their credit-card machine was broken so it was cash only. Â There were several signs in the windows and on the door explaining this. Â The waitress also told us before we sat down so there would be no issues. Â I would go back.
Review Source:All I had when I went here the other day was an avocado torta, but it was awesome. They didn't skimp on the avocado at all! Apparently they bake the bread fresh in the restaurant too... It's SO good. The decor was interesting and the service was good - very fast. Plus it's so cheap! My torta was only $5.
My friends both got Jamaicas, which I thought were pretty tasty. They thought they were a bit too sweet.
The chips were seasoned nicely, but too chewy - like they were a little overcooked. But alas, they were free.
I'll definitely be going here again.
We were on our way to Maxwell's Street market on a Saturday when we realize its not on a Saturday when the market is open but  on Sunday's! Anyway, we were close to Pilsen so we decided to go on  a little tour around the neighborhood.  We came across La Cebollita Grill on Ashland, which at first it doesn't look appealing I guess just the outside doesn't. Inside the place it is very colorful and very artsy. Seems to me that the artwork they had on display were probably from some local artist around the area. Either way, it looks cool.
Now for the food, they state they have the best tamales in town! But I gotta say get there early, we got there around 3 and the tamales were all gone. I had one green tamale and a red tamale, they were OK, the best tamales I ever had were home made and the ones the tamalera sells around Montrose and Kedize on the Northwest side. So to state the best in town....well I guess around there they might be the best, but not quite.
Tamales at Cebollitas are about $1.80 not bad for tamales.
We also had red pozole, which was really good and we had a tostada de tinga, taco Al Pastor and Taco de Carne Asada  which was also good. Our bill for our meal was $15 with tax and tip.
Cebollita was a good place to check out. Next time I am around the area, I would want to check other places in Pilsen. But it certainly a gem!
"Best Tamales in Pilsen!" Well, that's what their menu says. After eating the tamales at La Cebollita, I think they are very good, but the award for best tamales in Pilsen goes to La Casa del Pueblo Taqueria, because those are...amazing.
La Cebollita hosted our staff lunch the other day - folks were easy to communicate with on the phone and set up a reservation for our party of 18. Â Sweet. The guac was good and chunky, salsas that came with the chips were really good (especially the spicy red salsa), and fountain drinks were a whopping 22oz (or something. they were huge and ridiculous).
I had a cheese and pepper tamale (they were sold out of the other fillings), and a chicken torta. The tamale was good, but the cheese wasn't melted inside :( Â My torta was pretty good - I had to order a side of jalapenos to make it better, should have gotten avocado, too. Â It was pretty large, so I took one half home...it was so much more delicious heated back up in my oven.
The enchiladas looked like crepes. I did not like. Some other table got an enormous bowl of tortilla soup - hot damn, that looked amazing. I want that.
All in all, pretty pleasant experience at La Cebollita. Staff was working their asses off, so kudos!
I have been to Cebollita MANY times. I live right down the street and it is my boyfriend's favorite place. The best things that I have tried thus far are the fajitas (YUM) they are good with steak or chicken, and the gorditas. Unfortunately I am not really a fan of their tacos. I hate the corn tortillas they use, they always seem very dry. I have also had their chicken enchilladas. They are good, but not the best. The chips and salsa here are AMAZING! If you order something, make it a dinner. You get a very generous portion of rice and beans and the rice is delicious. The horchata is really good too!
Overall, I would say definitely check out Cebollita and maybe you will make it a frequent stop like I have!
A great neighborhood place. The price is right for tortas and you get table service and chips and salsa. Â The portions are huge, even my husband could not finish his torta.
It does look a little hole-in-wall ish from outside. Â But once you step inside, it's a clean, nice refreshing place to dine on Ashland.
I love, love, love, love this place. It is, by far, my favorite Mexican spot in the entire city. I stumbled across La Cebollita while I was living in Pilsen. My family was visiting, so we decided to try them out - and I've been hooked ever since! (My mother and grandmother are both old school Mexicans and they highly approved!!)
It's a cute little place with fun art on the walls and a TV in the back that isn't too loud or annoying. Everyone is friendly and helpful... even if your Spanish isn't perfect! :)
Everything here is good. I've been here a million times, have taken everyone I know here, and everything we've ever ordered has been great. The best part is that my boyfriend and I can order 2 burritos with beans and rice for $15. How great is that? Plus, they are HUGE burritos. (I always have leftovers.) The fajitas are excellent, fresh guacamole is good, and even their breakfast is yummy!
I have since left the Pilsen area, and now live within walking distance of several Puerto Rican places, but still drive the 10 - 15 mins to pick up food from La Cebollita...
Yummy... came in on a Sunday mid-afternoon and the place was very quiet (1 other table of people). Â By the time we left it was starting to fill up (closer to dinner time).
The tamales are delicious, even the sweet tamale with pineapples & raisin, which I was quite skeptical of.
I loved the HUGE glasses of water we received upon sitting down and the fact that we got 2 different types of salsa (verde and regular) with the chips. Â Both salsas were good, the red had just the right amount of kick.
I also had a taco with cheese, I love places that go heavy on the cheese and La Cebollita did not disappoint.
Our entire meal for 2 with tip was only $15. Â I can't wait to go back and try more.
I was surprised to read the mixed reviews, but after reading the dates I wasn't so surprised anyway. La Cebollita has DEFINITELY hired a new chef & changed the staff, so someone must be reading these Yelp reviews!!
Firstly, this reminded me of those spot-in-a-wall spots that's secretly run by the mafia - NOT because it's shady (it's actually a fantastically decorated sit-down restaurant), but because of the AMAZING quality + price! Â
From the outside, I wasn't expecting much from the restaurant since the signage was older... BOY was I in for a surprise!!
The restaurant walls were painted in festive shades of earthy red, orange, and yellow. The heating pipes were shiny as chrome rims of Mexican town tune-ups, the tables had white tablecloth AND an extra layer of white paper on top, plenty of seating, updated kitchen (trust my chef bf to peek through the open windows just to examine their kitchen gears), and the walls had gorgeous painting + artsy photographs portraying life in Mexico! Â There were curious photos of accordions, and ladies in festive dresses that struck me as more Cuban than Mexican, but the food were STRAIGHT-UP authentic Mexican cuisines!
Now... on to the food...
Free Chips & Salsa: This is the standard affair in any Mexican restaurant you go to, even the little joint next to the Addison red line station. But La Cebollita take their salsa seriously, with its red salsa chunky, filled with REAL tomatoes, jalapeno and onion. The salsa verde was incredibly flavorful, I honestly tasted a chicken-broth base and both salsas had just the right hint of spices! ALL THESE QUALITY INGREDIENTS IN THE FREE APPETIZER?!
Appetizers: so many things to choose from... but only 1 stomach... we ordered the Tortilla Soup, which is a popular street vendor food in Mexico, and almost "too-common" to be served as a legit sopa in most restaurants. Â Naturally, we had to order it. WoW. The soup was thick with flavor and made with chicken broth base, dabbed with crunchy, fried tortilla strips and additional slices of avocado upon request. My bf was so touched by its authenticity that he literally sat in silence, sipping the soup for 10minute, and let out a huge sigh of content upon finishing the soup.
Entrees: I absolutely luuuuuuv mole!! Â Did you know they have over 50 varieties of Mole served in Mexico, depending on which state / region you are in? Â The traditional ingredients include chocolate, crushed concha cookies, 20+ spices cooked in a large earthy pot for more then 20 hours? Â The mole poblano was OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD! Â Full-bodied, thick dark brown gravy that had just the right amount of herbal spices, with a balance of chocolate tint. Â The chicken was tender and juicy, fell right off the bones with the touch of your fork. Served with a side of refried beans (with extra herbs mixed in) and yellow rice, with bits of carrots & cilantro mixed in. Â My favorite part of this dish? The chefs accentuated the flavor of mole with sprinkles of white sesame seed on top..... yummm!
Torta de Lomo - I was too full after the mole and only took a bite out of the torta, but the bread was crunchy and fresh, the skirt steak juicy and thoroughly marinated, with the perfect complement of sliced lettuces and tomatoes! Â The perfect amount of sour cream makes all the difference!
Beverage: I am not kiddin' you when I tell you my FAV. drink in the world is Horchata water! Â La Cebollita scored the highest in my book in the ENTIRE Chicago! Strong cinnamon flavor coupled with condensed milk, half & half and milk, the horchata was fresh and in no-way watered down!!
Needless to say, we both walked out of La Cebollita Grill stuffed like Thanksgiving turkeys with half of the torta to take home. Â I just took 20minute to dedicate this review, because this restaurant rocked our worlds!! Â We will definitely be back for more!!
-- Must-haves next visit --
Tamales: I haven't had a chance to try their amazing Tamales- this is a breakfast affair so I gotta wake up early enough to grab some before they run out!
Postres: Â Arroz con leche?! I gotta skip the entree just to have this dessert!!
This place is truly a diamond in the rough. Â I lived 1 block away for a year before my husband dragged me inside. Â I must have passed this place a million times and was never tempted inside because of what it looks like outside. Â But under large amounts of protest, my husband convinced me to try it with him and I must say I was pleasantly pleased. Â The food is delish, on par with it's more widely known neighbor Nuevo Leon and you won't be stuck waiting for a table like at Nuevo Leon. Â The service is very good because it's usually pretty empty. Â Each time I've gone, there couldn't have been more than 3 other couples. Â It is BYOB so don't forget to bring your beverage of choice.
Review Source:As my perpetual onion breath would have you believe, I am a fan of the onion. Â Thusly, I was intrigued when this place opened up in my 'hood, mainly because of the picture of the onion on the sign. Â I'm so easily swayed by the oddest things. Â The right advertising campaign will have me emptying my wallet. Â Please don't try it.
I've been here numerous times, and the carne asada tacos are my usual pick. Â Fresh, not dried out steak, cilantro, lime, avocado (for a nominal fee, but seriously people, are you that cheap?), and of course, a heaping pile of onions. Â Onions which will make your breath drive away your pesky neighbors for hours. Â That's what I'm talking about. Â
My recent discovery is the tortilla soup, which at $4.50 is half the price and almost as good as the soup at May St. Cafe. Â And did I mention it comes in a bowl about as big as a baby's bathtub? Â Gnomes could be doing water ballet in here for all I know. Â This sucker is huge. Â Also good for clearing out your sinuses. Â
They have a good selection of Mexican pop, the service is a touch slow sometimes but always friendly, they take credit cards, the neighborhood cops like it which could be either good or bad depending on your criminal record, and it's way cheap. Â
Come  for the soup, stay for the extra napkins you'll need to blow your nose with afterwards... or just eat some onions.
Dead on a Friday night might furrow your brow into a question mark, but if you've been here before (and I have), you'll bring a six pack and sit your ass down (which we did).
I'm an only child. I inherited two sisters through my blushing hubs whom I love con muchos abrazos pero. . . y pero, there is a waitress here who I want to be my third. It's inexplicable, but I'm drawn. Maybe it's because she brings me big mounds of guac and sweet, sweet suiza-fied burritos for bottom dollar prices?
There's really nothing "ito" about this burrito as it fed me for four meals. I wouldn't get chicken again, as I prefer mine pulled not cubed. Careful if you follow my lead, as the tomatillo salsa pool on which it wades is deceptively hot, hot, hot. *chugs beer* *burps* Ready for more.
Oh please, ladies. You belch. I've heard you.
A rarity in my repertoire, I come here and get a different thing every time. I'm always full, thrilled with the value and eager to make La Ceb a part of my foodie family. They've earned my trust.
p.s. Oh, christ, the frijoles. I really could live on chips and beans. Emilia indeed. Ship me south.
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this one. I think if I had ordered better, it would have been 4 stars for sure.
My friend and I had heard about the tamales, so went for lunch on Saturday and by 12:00 when we got there, they were down to only two. Not two kinds, 2 single tamales. Luckily, we got to try a sweet tamale (red, sweet masa with raisins and pineapple) and a cheese and pepper tamale. Both were fantastic, and I would dream about coming here and feasting on tamales, but it's apparently impossible to get them! Come ON, people. You know your tamales are popular, why not make a few more of them? That frustration knocked off a star.
We ordered the smoky, poplano mole and while it was good, HOLY SMOKE was the flavor strong. I'm glad we tried it, but I would not order again. We also shared the pork torta which was huge and excellent. Their horchata was good, but tasted really watered down compared to other places I"ve had it.
Service was fine and atmosphere was clean. It's a BYOB, but we biked down here from the north side, so no alcohol for us that day.
My friend and I were torn between this place and Nuevo Leon. If I was sure they'd have tamales at Cebollita, I'd go again, but since they never appear to have them available, I'd probably try NL next time. Â
Still great prices and good value as well. Hard to complain when we only paid $18 for all that food.
I had to divorce my other Mexican place b/c they got too big and then the food started to suck. So, since then I've been on a quest to find my new Mexican place. Â I found this place, thanks to Yelp, and love it.
The food was great, service was awesome and it was pretty cheap. Â I had the carne asada tacos and then a chicken dish (the one with the melted cheese on top). Â The husband had a tamale and enchiladas. Â Everything was great, the food was fresh, fast and the service was excellent. Â
I think I found my new Mexican place...I hope this is a long marriage.
This really is as good as it gets when it comes to your fast sit down restaurant. Â The food is incredibly fresh and their horchata is spectacular. I first tried this place at our office's holiday party and I've been more than a fan every since. I love this place. Their salsa is the bomb and their prices are decent. You can get a decent meal here for under 10 bucks. Â
I've had a few things here and I've not been disappointed. The place is chic and clean unlike some of the other similar restaurants in Pilsen.
The service is good not excellent. But this place is all about the food.
Love this place. It's just around the corner from me and has quickly become one of my favorites in Pilsen. The food is fresh, delicious, and unbelievably cheap, and the service is  super friendly and fabulous. The decor is simple and clean, yet very inviting and comfortable.
Only (minor) complaint is that I haven't been able to try their tamales, as they've run out by the time I've gotten there for dinner. Guess this gives me an excuse to make a trip there for breakfast.
On a beautiful day for a Pilsen adventure, we were checking out the neighborhood and taking some pictures. A man in a local bakery recommended this place. It was cute enough to try, and with a local reco who would say no?
But, it just didn't leave a good taste in my mouth. The Jamaica was really good, actually. Then I ordered a carne asada taco and a al pastor taco with rice and beans. The pork was spiced pretty good but seemed really fatty, but it's Mexican food--no one said anything about healthy. So, I let that go. But, the carne asada, which I'm usually a big fan of, was just really tough. I didn't enjoy it at all.
I left just really full but not really feeling very well, and it eventually turned into a pretty bad stomach ache and.. you know the rest. Growing up in Los Angeles, I'm not exactly new to non-pristine Mexican food, but there has to be better options in Pilsen.
I have decided to write "proper" reviews from now on. No more swearing, filthy language, or tales of sexual escapades. I am a reformed man now, I found Jeebus (this is all in preparation of my upcoming trip to find homeboy Jesus)
Their menu says "best tamales in Pilsen". Perhaps!
I have not eaten at other restaurants in Pilsen to start a fight between the best tamales, but La Cebollita delivers on their promise. I got one with red sauce, another one with verde. The one with red sauce has the right kick, spicy and hot. The verde tamale was great, too.
Because I am a heavy hitter, and eat like I am carrying octuplets (insert octo-mom joke here), I also got three tacos: al pastor, cecina, and carne asada. My favorite is the cecina, salted steak served on tortilla with onions and cilantro. Succulent meat with exquisite flavors. A 5 star dish. The al pastor taco is another 5 star dish. Squeeze some lime on it and vous êtes sur le feu (do you see how I used French instead of Spanish? does not make any sense, right?). The carne asada taco is just OK. I thought the meat was chewy, and some of it was charred. 3 star material.
Overall, a 4 star experience. Food is excellent for the most part, and service is prompt. Plus, it is ridiculously cheap. Tamales are $1 each, and the tacos are $1.80 each. I was stuffed like a turkey for under $10. I had to waddle back to work, but it was absolutely worth it.
Places like La Cebollita make me wonder why I didn't get myself a Mexican bf, or at least a houseboy.
one of the main reasons i walked into this place was the bright decor and  the name "la cebollita grill" is really cute and catchy.  the waitress was really attentive and took our drink order the minute we sat down.  she also gave us chips and salsa shortly after.  i know it's cliche...but there's something about free chips & salsa that makes a girl feel really good.  the waitress brought out 2 salsas, a roja and a verde, both equally delicious and just a little bit spicy.  the verde was actually really lime-y and had a nice bite to it. Â
i ordered the chicken tacos and a carne asada tostada. Â i have a such weakness for the crispiness of tostada shells! Â the tostada was overflowing with business that i actually had to eat a lot of the meat and veggies off before i could pick it up. Â the tacos were equally over-stuffed and wonderful. Â the chicken was good but slightly dry. Â the carne asada was as it should be...moist and flavorful and not at all sinewy. Â it was a good experiece overall.
I came here on a recent Saturday afternoon after touring Pilsen with a group of Yelpers (thanks Johnny- your neighborhood tours should turn into a business!).
First thing to mention- this place agreed to handle a large group of us- and did a pretty good job. Â Food didn't all come out at the same time- but it wasn't too noticeable (at least for me).
Hoping to find a place that offered something really unique, I was a bit disappointed to find that there wasn't anything real special about the menu. Â For whatever reason, I was hoping to stumble upon some chapulines- a specialty of Oaxaca (basically dried grasshoppers that are used in cooking or even just in munching as a snack), or to try out some regional Mexican cuisine that I am not totally familiar with.
My disappointment didn't last long since nothing-out-of-the-ordinary isn't always necessarily a BAD thing. Â After all, one of the most frequent cravings I have are basic carne asada tacos served with some fresh squeezed lime, topped with onions and cilantro (this place IS named after an onion too!). Â This place could deliver that- along with some other options like al pastor (slow cooked, gyro-style pork that has marinated in a pineapple and onion type of sauce), cecina (a salted beef), and many other options. Â
So opting for a selection of four tacos brought out a very nice looking plate, and the flavors were all there. Â Unfortunately the meat for the most part was overcooked and therefore the tacos were very dry. Â Salsas were just my style- not too spicy, but good flavor.
I would try this place again. Â Three-stars in my book means the place is good, and that I wouldn't hesitate coming back, but only if I were in the immediate area. Â I would like to try their tamales, which they seem to be known for (and were already sold out for the day by the time we arrived at 3:00 PM).
This is a pretty good place to come and get pretty good Mexican food. Ventured in during the neighborhood tour this past Saturday and this was the selected location for lunch.
I ordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce along with double rice and no beans for $8. Pretty solid deal since it came in a pretty big portion. Not the best enchiladas I have had, but it was pretty good. I saw a couple of people get the burrito which was huge. I like to think of myself as a burrito master, but I think I would not have finished that thing. I saw Johnny devour his and I could not believe it. I will try the burrito next time, since Johnny has now inspired me.
The food here is SOOOOOOO good!!! We came in with chips and salsa waiting on the table. The salsas were not as spicy as I like but very fresh. They have Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice here, Jarritos, and Horchata. No booze but I believe it is BYOB. Everything from Enchiladas to Tamales to Camarones on the menu at reasonable prices, although they were out of Tamales when we came Saturday afternoon! I ordered camarones al mojo de ajo (shocker I know!) and it was great. I have never had the camarones mixed with both onions and garlic (I am not a huge fan of onions) but their presence did lend flavor. I loved that they gave you avocados, oranges and limes as garnishes/sides, and they had the rice with the peas and corn in it that they have at my favorite mexican restaurant of all time, La Palapa in McKinley Park. It wasn't as good as theirs, but it still is way better than that red rice you usually get.
GET THE GUAC. This may be the best guac I have had in a restaurant.
Kudos to them for accommodating our large group. Everyone's food looked awesome. Our server was nice and pretty quick with drinks though a bit slow with bringing the meals.
My meal:
Small guacamole which is pretty large so keep that in mind. Â It was pretty good and they didn't do the money saving trick of mixing in sour cream to stretch it out (which I hate). Very oniony so do the world a favor and become friends with a mint immediately following .
The chicken tacos were pretty good though I was put off by the occasional hard crunchy burnt piece (not fun to bite into). The taste was pretty good though. However, not amazing enough to be on my list of favorite taco places
Their salsas aren't really spicy at all but I do think they're flavorful.
Atmosphere:
Clean, spacious, inviting. Oh, and the bathroom is clean and fresh smelling (which is SO nice).
Overall, A great little lunch spot. Get their early for the tamales because we missed out on those.
I've been coming here for a year or so now. Â It's a nice alternative to the over hyped Neuvo Leon.
The food seems fresh, the service is very friendly and attentive. Â The place is BYOB.
One of the more brighter and cleaner places in Pilsen. Â Food is standard Mexican fare - in a neighborhood full of good taco and burrito places nothing really stands out here. Â It's all slightly above average.
I continue to be really pleased with the service and food even a year later and I'm glad to see that the place seems to be getting gradually busier!
Pros: BYOB, takes credit cards (rare for Pilsen), and good food and service!
La Cebollita Grill is my favorite place in the neighborhood. I usually go at least once a week, one day I went twice in one day. They fully know my name here. Cebollita is very CLEAN (a huge thing for me), the servers are friendly, they have delicious, inexpensive food, Â they're veg friendly, and they're byob.
Review Source:La Cebollita nails it - this is the all the authentic complex rich goodness I expect when I eat Mexican. The Mole Poblano is spot on and really really wonderful - as is ther pumpkin green Mole, the tacos, the temps on the steaks, the tamales. Â - In my opinion any negative reviewer has never left the U.S. or lincoln park for that matter for their Mexican.
Service is friendly and attentive.
very disappointing. Everything was bland.
I had lengua tacos, lomo tacos, and an Al Pastor tostado- all we're as rich in flavor as a cracker. The green salsa was shamefully bad, otherwise the rest was barely average.
The pico de gallo was good and the tortillas for the tacos were good, thus the 2 stars.
La Cebollita is absolutely my favorite restaraunt in my neighborhood. Although I wouldn't say their burritos are the best, the Taco Salad, The Sopes, the Horchata, everything else I've ever had there is spectacular.
And the paint!
The whole restaraunt is painted in fabulous shades of orange, makes it feel cheerful on the gloomiest Chicago day.
The staff has always been incredibly attentive and sweet, and the food is fast fast fast. I love them.
Tied w/Nuevo Leon (on 18th Street )for being my favorite Mexican Restaurant in Pilsen - very clean and bright, noveau and light decor - great service and truly delicous food served in a quasi-gourmet appearance with the most expensive entree (at the time of this review at least) being less that $11. Â If Neuvo Leon is too crowded, just walk over to Ashland and go here, and when La Cebollita is too crowded go to Nuevo Leon. Â I will definately return here again....
Review Source:Could Pilsen get any better? So far I've tried nearly all that Pilsen has to offer and La Cebollita is by far my favorite! The prices are amazing and the food is beyond delicious. Â The menu is filled with many authentic dishes. Â This is the place for homemade tasting Mexican cuisine! Most importantly it's BYOB so don't forget your drinks!
