I would give it a 4.5. The Matador sandwich is quite delicious! The guacamole is one of the better that there is around. Service was a little slow but would go back for sure

We always bring family here when they come to visit. The guacamole is hard to beat, haven't found a place that beats theirs to date. Although it can get busy during weekend evenings, during the week its usually easy to come in and take a seat right away. Love the decor and ambience, as well as the service. Have yet to find a rude or slow waiter. Definitely recommend to friends.

There are a lot of Mexican restaurants to choose from in Orange County.  La Siesta is one of the best.  They have an Mexi-surf theme and instead of cheesy traditional Mexican songs, they play late 90's-00's Mexican pop/salsa/merengue.  Makes for a fun atmosphere.

I am usually here for breakfast.  Carnitas plate is amazing.  The micheladas are gigantic and spicy.

This place gets packed easily so be prepared to be flexible!

Ordered carnitas and carne asada trays with all the fixings for a New Years Eve party. The food was great! Our order was ready and waiting  when we went to pick it up, and the staff carried everything to our car for us. Will definitely use La Siesta for our next party.

Great local mexican fare.  Authentic-ish, especially in that the food is not overly seasoned--refreshing for a family mexican joint.  Unassuming in a wonderful way.
    Margaritas -- 3.
Atmosphere -- 4.5, lots of families on a weeknight which you may or may not mind.

Our waiter was super nice and the service was great but that's where the good ends. I got an enchilada combo that came out cold. So cold, in fact, that the cheese in the cheese enchilada wasn't totally melted.  On top of that, all the food tasted canned and mass-produced. Definitely not the home cooked Mexican food they claim to serve.  Very disappointing meal. Will have to trek to El Cholo next time.

I think this place looks way better from the inside than from the outside.  Really nice place to have a luncheon... food was pretty good and at decent prices!

I'd like to see if they have happy hour!  Looks like a place that I'd want to try a margarita!

Went for taco Tuesday which was good but nothing great.

    Exceptional.

I got their El Matador sandwich (steak, ham, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and avocado on a sweet roll for $9), and it was excellent. It's messy as hell, dripping juices everywhere, but it was truly satisfying. Lots of flavor and lots of substance. Only needed half of it be full.

I also tried Brandon D.'s burrito and my mom's machaca and those were great too.

In terms of culinary criticism, if I could change out the large steak fries that came with El Matador (they weren't mentioned in the menu, so I just took them as a bonus) for a side plate of refried beans, I would muy, muy feliz. Their beans are GOOOOD.

We got there at 5 for an early dinner on our way home. There wasn't a wait when we got there, but there was a pretty long one (with people standing IN THE RAIN -- how's THAT for demand?) when we left.

I've lived in San Clemente my entire life and this is, hands down, my favorite Mexican restaurant. The service is great, the salsa is amazing and every entree I've had there is pretty spectacular. I'm a huge fan of the chicken tacos.

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant.  The carnitas and el pastor are both great. We come here about once a week. The same family has run this place since the 80s. Great service and casual place

The only good thing that comes out of this place is there tortilla soup, other than that the food is awful and tasteless.. I can throw together a better meal with an MRE.

Great food and service. They have TV's spread throughout which adds a nice vibe.  The bar pours heavy. The only reason i'm giving them 4 stars is because i came in and ordered just rice and beans for 10 people..they charged me $40 which was way too high.

Other than that, it's a great place to eat and watch games.

I work nearby and this is a great place to eat great Mexican food on my lunch hour. Granted, I eat here after the lunch rush (around 1:30) and I never have a hard time getting immediately seated and having chips, salsa and my drink order taken within a few minutes.

The salsa and chips are great. I love the Ceviche Mixto. Very fresh with just enough spices. It is served with big tasty chips, avocado slices and plenty of lime to squeeze in. Yummy!

It's your classic Mexican Restaurant - right down to the decor, Spanish music playing and red, green and white light bulbs in the light fixtures. But they don't forget where they are located - great surfing films rolling on all the TV's.

As for the service, I have had Lizbeth a few times and she is friendly, smiles, efficient, knows her menu, and when she drops off the check she makes sure you know to take your time, enjoy the end of your meal, no rush. I like that, I have an hour for lunch and I feel perfectly comfortable just finishing my drink, snacking on the remaining chips and reading my book.

I would say the only bummer is - no air conditioning. The ceiling fans do whirl at a great pace and they keep the temperature comfortable. But I have to admit on super hot or muggy days I want some kick ass AC blowing down on me.

Very casual environment. Busy, even mid-afternoon; fortunately, we were seated immediately -- up front, where it was bright-and-airy.
Oddly, the floor felt "waxy"; moreso as you walked back towards the kitchen and restroom.
Their thick-and-crunchy chips and flavorful-and-chunky (different than others we've tasted) salsa made for a nice starter; I wish I was aware of their spicier salsa (which I just read about in another review)!
We ordered the Camerones Al Mojo de Ajo and the Carnitas; both were very tasty!
    Good food.

Another Mexican restaurant review.... We just can't get enough when we are in California!

We just happened to find this place by chance, took a detour off the 5 freeway which was jammed packed on Labor Day weekend and were super glad that we did! The place is packed because the food is so good! Service was efficient, none the less.

The bar and restaurant has great ambiance and I enjoyed a Margarita special which tasted like it was made from scratch instead of a mix. It really knocked my socks off!

We stuck with our standard MO, ordering off the Al a Carte menu and enjoyed the tacos, frijoles, chili poblano and cheese enchilada. Absolutely delicious!

Love this place! Delicious chips & salsa, if you like spicy food, ask for the spicy salsa. They have great carnitas and burritos for a reasonable price. But be warned, this place is busy! You will have to wait but it's worth it!

When the chips and salsa are frequently mentioned as the highlights in a review, that should send the antenna up.  Generic Mexican restaurant food that you've had a million other places.  Asada was overdone and consistency of leather.  Very loud.

Stopped on our way home from Disneyland, I grew up eating great mexican food and this restaurant did justice! Ordered a number combo, not paying attention to the menu, we found out that soup or salad came with the menu as an option...albondigas were ordered and enjoyed by both of us...I had the number 9 which was a LARGE WET BURRITO...next time I will order ala carte cuz most of it was left uneaten (pork verde, btw and with refried beans) the hubby had the number 7 carné asada burrito (that had whole beans it) and a chicken taco...everything was great flavorful and left its full with mexican food baby  belly's

Do yourself a favor and try the chicken tacos. They are pretty big! If you're filling up on chips and salsa and beer, you probably only need to order one.

Great place to hit up when your feeling in the mood for some good restaurant style Mexican. Carnitas plate is my favorite, huge! The chips and salsa are plentiful. Gets very busy so expect a wait.

I posted the quick tip, before I received my tacos. The al pastor wasn't that good today, and the mahi mahi didn't taste very good either.  Disappointed with the food and service. Even the cute blonde hostess, didn't look as good as she did last time.
    But the weather was awesome.

Longer than expected wait, but Saturday night. Once in, fast service, salsa is very cilantro heavy handed. Chips are good, but need salt. Tortilla soup tasty. Seems popular with the locals, give .5 for that.

Overall a nice restaurant, but not the best Mexican food in OC.

We went to La Siesta last Friday evening after having not been for a few months.

We were reminded of why we used to go and why we had stopped going, all on the same visit.

We used to come here weekly, the food is authentic and delicious, but I would recommend dining at La Siesta when they are not too busy, which means avoid traditional meal serving times. For some reason, when the place is packed, both the kitchen and the servers get very sloppy.

Our table ordered enchiladas, fish tacos, huevos rancheros and chicken quesadillas. I had asked for black beans with my fish tacos, was served refrieds. Huevos rancheros came out lukewarm, enchiladas and quesadillas were fine.

I didn't have a knife and fork and try as I may, I could not get the attention of a server for 5-7 full minutes, finally flagging down a hostess. She never brought them, I had to take some off another table.

Our server never once checked back with us to ensure all was OK.

Again, food here can be really great, but your experience will be much better at 3PM as opposed to 6 or 7 PM.

Thank you Yelp! Passing through town (slowly because the freeway was jammed dammnit) and we were suddenly starving for Mexican. Yelped nearby choices and decided on La Siesta. It was A.F.'s review of the ceviche that got me right where I live... so that's what I ordered... exactly. Ceviche was delicious and plentiful, fresh and spicy good. Almost couldn't finish the taco, but I did. My son had the seafood enchilada and was a happy clam. My friend had enchiladas with Mole (he said he's had better but I'll tell you he ALWAYS says that). What I love is the dark interior and roomy booths and most definitely the mural of the fighting cocks (roosters) - see Garett's shot.

Bottom line: If I lived nearby, I'd be a regular. Didn't even get a chance to try the Margaritas as we were, ahem, getting back on the road.

OK - it pains me to do this, really.

The last two experiences at La Siesta were not good.  First, my wife ordered a San O Salad with shrimp and couldn't eat the shrimp because they smelled very fishy - not totally bad, but old and fishy.

Then, this morning, we went there again and I ordered my usual large menudo with pata, and it tasted a bit off - no big deal.  Until, I bit into a large piece of tripe, and it was completely black and rotten.  It was the single most offensive thing I've tasted in my entire life.  So bad, I had to run to the bathroom, almost vomited, and had to rinse my mouth with water.  Then we hit CVS so I could get Pepto Bismol and York Peppermint  Patties to get the lingering taste out of my mouth.

The response of the cook was to say, oh, it was just a burnt piece of meat, which was interesting since the tripe in menudo is cooked in broth and there's no way to burn it.  It wasn't burnt, it was black, slimy, and rotten.

So, after the last two meals at La Siesta, I have to downgrade this restaurant to one star, and I'm sad to say I'll never be back.  And, I'm not sure I'll be able to stomach menudo for some time to come.

My friend's and I were looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant while shopping at the Rainbow Sandals Factory and found this place on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try.

The parking is pretty horrible, but that seems to be a theme of San Clemente. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating and we didn't have to wait during the lunch hour.

The chips they serve you weren't the best tasting. It tasted burnt to me and excessively oily. The salsa wasn't the greatest either. One had way too much cilantro and the other had a hair in it.

The portion sizes are pretty big, but the flavor wasn't there. I expected that authentic mexican taste, but found it to be pretty bland. My friend's carnitas plate was gigantic, the carnitas had a nice texture but didn't have the best taste. Their breakfast burrito outshined the breakfast taco. The rice and beans weren't memorable.

The prices are decent, the service was just okay, but the food just wasn't there for me.

La Siesta was by far the best spot we ate at our entire trip to Laguna Beach.  Although technically its in San Clemente but close enough.  The service was pretty excellent.  The food was delicious and the price was right.

I had ceviche mixto and a al pastor taco.  The ceviche was nicely sized, fresh, spicey, and a good bit of lime served with fresh chips.  The al pastor taco was delicious.  Very well marinated and tasty.  I tried the seafood enchiladas and fish taco as well.  Both were very good.  The chips and salsa was also excellent.  The rice and black beans were what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant.

The inside was clean and I heard the restrooms were sparkling clean.

The waitress forgot a margarita on the order but didnt charge us either.  It happens.  She was on top of all the rest for them being so busy.

If you are visiting Laguna Beach I recommend you skip all the incorrectly highly rated restaurants in that area and head down to San Clemente for some La Siesta.  All the food walking by us also looked good.  I'd love to try more of it if I was in the area.

We LOOOOOVE La Siesta (even though our favorite waitress, Carmen, left a while ago. We miss you Carmen!!) on the weekends. No better place in the OC for huevos rancheros, carnitas and margaritas. Nieve (I think her name is) is awesome, and never lets your margie run dry. Their salsas and chips are off the charts.
We love the decor, the home-town charm--we drive there from Laguna so it's worth the drive. No, it's not Javier's or frou-frou Mexican food, it's just down-home delicious.
Other highlights are the mushroom enchiladas, their albondigas and tortilla soups, their al pastor tacos, and did I mention their carnitas?

Let me set the scene...   We're driving down the 5 heading towards San Diego from Lancaster searching Yelp for Mexican food close to our location.  Up pops La Siesta - according to the map, it is close to the highway and the reviews look good, so we figure we'll give it a try.

If you're looking for high-end Mexican, keep on driving.  But if you're looking for a restaurant that is packed with happy patrons around 1:30 on a Friday afternoon, this is your place.

Within minutes of being seated, the requisite chips and salsa were delivered and our drink orders were taken - a Corona, a Margarita and an interesting strawberry soft drink by the name of Mirinda.

The menu consisted of the usual bill of fare for a Mexican restaurant, but all three of us ate everything on our plates and several baskets of chips which says a lot about the quality of the food.

The wait staff was very friendly and it seemed that all of them pitch in on all of the tables to make sure all of their guests are being taken care of.

Prices were well in line with what we are used to paying at home.

We'll certainly remember La Siesta if we're ever hungry for Mexican food in San Clemente again.

I was in town for a Cystic Fibrosis event and it was time for lunch. This is where a group of about 20-25 of us ended up.

The food is both delicious and inexpensive. But, don't expect it to be a get dressed up and take your significant other out for a classy meal. Its more like if you want some burritos and ceviche and a margarita while you watch the races or the game kind of a place.

It's a place you can kick back and hang out with friends while you eat good food.

The nachos are good. The salsa was maybe a 6 out of 10. The ceviche was the best I have had thus far. The reality becomes that I need to eat a lot more ceviche to have a well informed opinion. But, it was delicious.

The fish tacos were also quite good.

As long your not pretentious - I highly recommend.

While chilling with Nacho's family, we came here for lunch.  We got cadillac margaritas, and Burrito Jaimito: a wet burrito with choice of carnitas.  Comes with chips and cheese, pico de gallo salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

We had so many baskets of tortilla chips that the burrito was impossible to finish and for the first time in a long time, i left food behind

    see pics!

YUM! my husband & i had dinner at La Siesta last night. we were looking for somewhere kinda low key & casual, which turned out to be exactly what La Siesta is. The salsa is amazing, super fresh & homemade.
I ordered the tortilla soup based on another reviewers recommendation, but i didnt really care for it. my husband got the meatball & vegetable soup and it was really good, great flavor.
both of our entrees (steak tacos & carne asada burrito) were super yummy. the burrito was HUGE. my steak tacos had an awesome sauce on top.
we ordered a pint of salsa & a bag of tortilla chips to go b/c they were so good.
so, in addition to having awesome food, this restaurant is super cheap. we had 2 beers, 2 entrees, 2 bowls of soup, chips/salsa, more chips/salsa to go & our bill was under $40!
Also, our waitress was super sweet & attentive.
