The Landing on Bowen's Wharf is a must for anyone visiting Newport. The food, atmosphere, and prices are all fantastic. Although the restaurant was busy, I was seated almost immediately. No matter where you sit, you can have a very nice view of some huge yachts, and most tables are literally inches away from the water. Everyone is happy and having a good time, and there is live music, which is wonderful. There are TVs to watch as well. I got the Burger, which was absolutely excellent. The service was very friendly and the prices were very affordable. I definitely recommend The Landing to anyone in the Newport area. Will be returning during my next visit! :)

We were looking for a spot to keep our dinner buzz going while taking in the view. I had been here with friends a few summers ago and knew it would fit the bill. This experience was kind of a let down though.

The waiter/bartender was quick to refill our drinks but had a bit of an attitude. The simple cocktail I got was nasty, though the two my mom and sister were reportedly tasty.

It gets 3 stars, but barely, especially when compared to the next place we stopped at.

terrible food.  it is an ok spot to have a drink at sunset but that's about it.

The deck has a great view, as does most of that general area of Newport. So, there are definitely other options. The food isn't that great, but obviously with the scenic view it isn't that big of a deal? The service is also pretty slow.

If you go here on a Saturday night (10PM on), be prepared to pay a cover. This place tends to get a lot of the Bachelorette parties that frequent Newport in the summer as well as kind of a rowdy younger crowd (college age). The dance floor on the inside tends to get REALLY slippery (you also have to go through this room in order to get to the bathrooms upstairs).

I should have listened to the other reviews. Bad food and excellent view. Plus, the waitress asked chips? Or do you want to replace them with french fries? I said fries and then apparently was charged an extra $2.50.

    Never again.

My boyfriend, his cousin and I decided on The Landing because of the location and the need for dinner after hopping around Newport on a sweltering Sunday. We were sat immediately on the lower deck, and about ten minutes later our server came to take our drink order. Not only did he not introduce himself, but he seemed pretty bothered by us even being there. We checked out the menu, and I went with chowder and "clam fritters". I probably should've noticed the red flag; a New England restaurant calling clam cakes "fritters". Regardless, ten minutes later, the drink runner finally dropped off our drinks.

Our server popped back over to let us know that that the kitchen had run out of fritters and actually would no longer be serving them, ever again. Oh, good. I ordered crab cakes, my companions both ordered the scallops and we put in an order for eight oysters. Two chowders were dropped to the table, and it took us a while to flag anyone down to let them know that we had cancelled them as they no longer had the fritters. Our server stopped at the table and said, "just so you know, my name is Christopher if you guys need something", obviously annoyed that we had been saying "excuse me" over and over again. I've been a server for nine years, I've never once spoken to a table of guests in a rude, snide way like that.

Fast forward, the hot entrees come out. No oysters. My crab cakes were lackluster, mushy and mostly bread. The scallops were fresh, which was the only positive. When we inquired about the oysters and round of drinks we'd ordered twenty minutes prior, we were met with an apology that there's a drink runner, it had nothing to do with him, and he'd check on the oysters. At this point, all expectations were thrown out the window.

Finally, Christopher came to drop off our tab. Our tab for THREE people, which he had added a gratuity of 20% to. Nowhere on the menu is it stated that gratuity would be added, and we certainly were not told by anyone that it was a policy. We paid and left, and an email was drafted and sent about the miserable experience.

The response to that email? Word for word: "I'm so sorry to hear about your experience at The Landing. We are a family restaurant and always have repete customers. I looked into your complanit and will defanetly make the neccersary changes. Staff/food etc. Sorry again."

... Read a book, and find a new career.

Horrible Horrible place. Went with my Girlfriend and cousin for a casual dinner after walking around Newport. The view was the only impressive thing about this place. They had a "Drink runner" which took 30 minutes to bring 3 simple cocktails. Our waiter continuously fed us the line "let me check on it" when we inquired about parts of our order that he seemingly never placed until we asked about them. He was snide and arrogant in his words as talked to us through the evening. The worst part is he added a 20% gratuity on a party of THREE PEOPLE!!! he didnt even deserve 15%!!! This was on top of an already over priced menu. Horrible experience, I feel robbed of my time and money, and I will certainly never ever go back to such a low quality place ever again.

The food was OK.  The lobster bisque was too watery as compared to other restaurants in the area.  The food was more like Long John Silver quality.  This place is very touristy and they treat you as such.  It seems like the bar is their biggest attraction.  I'd recommend going if you want a view (which you can get at other restaurants) or a happening young bar scene but not if you want quality food and good service.

The food was decent, but took forever to arrive. We gave ourselves an hour there before we had to go to our boat ride, which was directly next door. We had to woof down our food and request the check immediately. We didn't order anything fancy, I think.

If you are looking for fresh seafood with a scenic view, you must stop by The Landing in Bowens Wharf. I came for dinner on a Saturday night and bar area was packed with people dancing and having a good time. There was a man playing acoustic guitar for some live entertainment. I made reservations for 8pm and specifically requested a table outside with a view and I believe I had the best table/view (right-hand corner of outdoor area).

The menu contains many seafood options and includes a raw bar. The prices here seem a little higher than other restaurants not located on the wharf, but then again you are paying for the location. I came for dinner with my parents and we split the following: raw oysters, clams casino, hot lobster roll, Atlantic salmon (with a wine reduction sauce) and grilled swordfish (with pineapple, and peach chutney). Out of all the dishes I would say the grilled swordfish was my favorite. Both the salmon and swordfish came with creamy mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Being on the water, I would suggest bringing a jacket as it does get chilly at night. The Landing also seems like a great place to stop to even just get apps or drinks.

Sorry smokers...Bowens Wharf is a smoke free area.

A nice place for lunch and cocktails near the water.  The Lobster Roll (not usually something I would order as I'm not a big fan of the lobsta roll but it looked soooo good - big chunks of lobster meat on baked bread) and the Fish Tacos - were both very tasty.   There were several interesting and delicious drinks on the menu and the service was friendly and efficient.  I would go back!

Tasty raw bar/ food and gorgeous views of the water, especially at sunset. Been here quite a few times and have never had a bad experience! A little cold at night so bring a jacket. I recommend this restaurant to all my clients at work.

Tried the hot buttered lobster roll and it was delicious! The bun was the best part and it was made even better by the chunks of lobster meat.

Crab and artichoke dip was creamier than anticipated but was pretty tasty.

I paid $37.50 for a drink and a lobster roll. That would be okay if the food was good and the service was good given the great location.

A friend ordered the lobster salad roll, I got the the hot lobster roll and we did a little switcheroo to have a taste of both. I liked the salad roll better, but it was still very mediocre. I'm afraid I might be biased. Since eating a lobster club sandwich last year in Maine, nothing tasted as delicious.

Beware of the service. The waitress messed up our orders a few times, once as soon as I ordered it.
"Can I please have a hot lobster roll?"
One order later.."You had the cold one right?"
"No. I got the hot one."
"Oh, right. It's written right here."
    "Yes ma'am."
Then if they offer you a choice of chips or fries with the sandwich, know that you are still paying $2.50 for the fries as the menu dictated in addition to the chips. The difference? You won't get the chips. It was a misleading question and the waitress did not seem very patient when I tried to explain that she offered an alternative to us instead of an add-on. If it was an add-on, where were our chips? She offered to take a dollar off the bill.. which was.. well, alright I guess. But then she took a dollar out of her wallet and threw it on the table and walked away. Awkward moment as my friends and I exchanged glances. She might as well throw it at me. How professional is that? A dollar was not worth that much to me.

The fish and chips isn't your usual dish with many pieces of battered fried fish. It's one giant piece of fried filet. My friend did not enjoy it. And the cold slaw had a strange rotten taste to it.

What I enjoyed about this lunch? The gorgeous day (even though we were seated inside), the little boy dressed up as a lobster and asked us to chant "roll" when he said "lobster", the drink, and my own good company.

I don't know much about The Landing, except it is the go to spot on Wednesday nights. Downstairs and upstairs patio, bars easily accessible on both levels, DJ spinning a variety of tunes, good looking people dancing and mingling, what is not to love?

Went to the landing for lunch and sat on the patio which provided for pictureseque views. We had stellar service, very friendly people. The panko crusted fish sandwich was pretty tasty and so were the fries. For a casual lunch, I had no problems and it satisfied hunger with a great view for prices that weren't outrageous for what it could be in Newport.

Walked by, and was sucked in by the outside bar and music playing.  The food was average at best.  The Lobster bisque was very thick almost lumpy, and had no lobster meat in it.  The Lobster mac and cheese sounds great, but was watery in a tomato cream sauce with some melted cheese over it and bland the pasta was over cooked.  I would not return.

Went here for a sunny, late summer brunch before tackling the Cliff Walk. I have to say, it was a perfectly unobjectionable brunch. I can see from the kind of place it is and other Yelp reviews how the food might not be stellar, but truly we must've gone on a good day, because everything was fine.

Classic dockside New England brunch place, with grimy tables, patio umbrellas, and wiggly plastic chairs. As a New England girl, I'm used to it and find that vibe kind of charming, but if you're from farther afield, you might not be impressed. On this Sunday, they had a live band playing, and thank our lucky stars it was the PERFECT music, otherwise it would've been really intrusive and bothersome. It was mellow, upbeat indie band, and combined with the sunny dockside view it added to the experience.

As far as the FOOD and the SERVICE went, it was a mostly good. Service timing was just right, and our food was yummy. I had the salmon BLT, and seriously it was delicious. Seriously! The BLT was served on DELICIOUS, perfectly grilled foccacia, the bacon was crispy but not greasy, the lettuce was crisp and fresh, and the salmon was cooked to perfection. Oh, and the aoili/mayo spread was flavorful and creamy. The portion was good, and I liked that it was sort of deconstructed so I could eat the components the way I wanted to rearrange them. If anything, my bloody mary was a TAD watered down, but that's a minor complaint.

Maybe the stars were aligned, but we had a lovely brunch. Atmosphere was perfect, my salmon BLT was truly scrumptious, and service was friendly. I'd definitely return!

A place with a location as good as The Landing's can afford not to make good food, just because people like to sit and enjoy a nice view while eating meals.

If you like a good view, The Landing is for you.

If you like a good meal, The Landing is not for you.

Let me describe their lobster macaroni and cheese:
    1. Boxed elbow noodles, some cooked through, some not.
    2. Can of tomatoes
    3. Minimal lobster meat, but one claw to lure you in.
    4. Melted Kraft singles on top.

    For $23.

    Just terrible!

Admittedly, my friend had the sirloin burger and gave it a good review. However, she noted that the fries tasted a little fishy because they had clearly been fried in the same oil as the seafood offerings.

So disappointing! I enjoyed the atmosphere, but when I order lobster macaroni and cheese, I expect a baked dish of cheesy goodness, preferably with some browned breadcrumbs on top for texture. Uncooked noodles do not make up the textural difference that I look for! I have a hard time believing anyone could be satisfied by The Landing's interpretation of this dish. It's just laziness, in my opinion. Just because you have a great location doesn't mean you should slack off on your menu, even though this is the case in many touristy places.

    Would not go back.

Four starts for location and view.  Two stars for food and service.
Come early and take your spot for viewing the sunset.
Food is just like a typical bar food nothing special but apparently they just recently opened the lobster bar just next door so maybe their food will improve.

First things first, we did the cliff walk and banged out 3.6 miles. I was still satisfied from my hungry man breakfast but my cousin and her hubby were on another page. Now just to bring you up to speed, these two are approaching the 30 day mark of the Paleo Diet. For those of you who don't know, this means, no carbs, legumes, dairy, booze, soy, and grains. So come 12:30 they were ready to grub. I wasn't quite on the same page but I was hoping by the time we walked back, went downtown, found a spot, my hunger would rev up and get goin'!

My cousin's mom told her they ate the Lobster Shack. Sounds cute right?! After finally finding the spot, we quickly were slapped in the face ... it was literally a shack!!! Like where you go to buy lobsters right from the boat. We thought okay, well maybe that's the spot, but I had the pictures ingrained in my head that my parents sent me and I knew it was all wrong. I quickly got on the phone with my mom, asked her where they ate that day ... it was the Lobster BAR! Alright, a little mistake, fine. We arrive at the Lobster Bar, which was really awesome, it looked just like a fish market with a restaurant plunked in the middle. We put our name in, it's a 30 minute wait.

To kill time, we go to poke around and head to the restaurant next door 'just to scope it out.' This is where we get pretty sneaky. We walked in through the back and headed to the hostess that way. Not only was not one customer at the hostess stand but there was a table available for three right outside. FOR THE WIN. I head over and cancel our reso at the Lobster Bar (I'll eat there next summer) and then settled up at the table at The Landing for lunch.

This was seafood heaven, which works perfectly for everyone's diet. It was tough to pick just one thing, because everything had me drooling. But I just went for it ... lobster roll me. This one was served up with a pickle and a bag of chips, damn right. However, the roll was all wrong. It was like a bulky roll but definitely stuffed, scratch that, over stuffed and for $19, I would hope so. I also jumped on the Paleo train and didn't eat too much bread but I had to have some bites to do a little compare and contract from Champlins. Once again, not a homerun. Just average. Perfect amount of mayo and of course chilled, but something was missing ... some spice, flavor, something.

We kicked the meal off with St. George Scallops, which I was eying to start, so you know I got a bite of that. Four pan seared scallops on top of a corn squastosh puree with a sesame slaw .. oh my, for the win! My cousin started her meal with the mushroom salad, which was filled with mushrooms, artichokes, and tomatoes in a balsamic dressing, also very good.

We also had one other on the lobster roll train with me. We were kicking ourselves because the table next to us, we saw the ordered a lobster salad which would have been more ideal for this diet and it looked outstanding! Jesse went with one of the specials which was a sesame crusted yellowfin tuna steak. We had split a piece of tuna the night before which was too cooked to our liking, but this one was just perfect. Rare on the inside, and sitting on top of a sweet chuntney salsa situation. It was outstanding.

I loved this little spot, we had some great outdoor seating and live music all while sitting on the water. How can you beat that?! The place was jammin', which I'm sure it typically is but this cause the wait staff to be a little slow, or maybe she didn't like us because we didn't order booze. I'm sure it was the latter. All in all, a fabulous meal and the best part ... great place to people watch while grubbin' on some seafood!

Like a few Yelpers had mentioned in their reviews already, this place is kind of meh. Thankfully(?), I didn't get to try the food so I was not able to witness the bad experience that so many of the reviewers before me had to deal with. Instead, I just got a drink, as did my companions, and we were able to enjoy them at a table overlooking the water.

The drinks were a bit pricey, though. And there was an awful lot of ice in my bloody mary. Still, the view was nice. And that seems to be about it.

Nice location with good view of the ocean from the second floor and our server, Kim, was very friendly and helpful. View and server is the only reason for two stars.

Food was terrible! Oysters were shucked so quickly and poorly (I could've done much better) that you end up chewing on shell bits. Fried calamari had no seasoning and was tasteless. Scallops were dried and salty.

I'd go back for a beer, but I will not be eating here.

We needed some lunch after we had just arrived in Newport, and this place was able to seat us right away by the water. I ordered their sangria which was really good and refreshing. We ordered the steamers to start and they were great (with minimal sand!). I had the crabcake sandwich for my meal and it was actually delicious. I usually shy away from crabcakes because more often than not, they are all breading and no crab, but this one was really tasty with a good amount of crab. This is a good spot to sit by the water in the sun and have a cocktail.

I have eaten at a handful of eateries in the Newport, Rhode Island area, and there are some I still need to visit. Some of them are really good like The Black Pearl, which has the best chowder, and Clarke Cooke House. Then there were some that were pretty decent like the Red Parrott and then you have the tourist traps like the Barking Crab. On my recent trip to Newport I had the opportunity of visiting another establishment at Bowens Wharf, The Landing. This one ranks as a good with a very possible return.

My party started out with a round of apps. Wait a minute...actually me and another member of the party started out with oyster shooters. The only thing I regret; is that I didn't do another. Now I understand why they are considered the perfect cure for hangovers.

Ok, now on the apps. The Stuffed Quahogs are filled with way too much breading; you can barely taste the chorizo. I have had better stuffies at Harbor Side, and 20 Water Street, which is currently under renovations and new ownership, in East Greenwich. The rest of my party ordered the chowder, two Rhode Island and one New England style. They said it wasn't bad, but we need to stick to the Chowder at the "Black Pearl". The oyster platter was good.

In regards to the entrees, my party stated that the lobster rolls were probably one of the best they've had. I decided to go with the fish and chips.  The cod was cooked, as Gordon Ramsey would say, to perfection.  Anything breaded in panko and fried is good with me. Inside, the fish was white, flaky, and moist.

I can definitely see myself here again. The food was good, the service was good, and so was the atmosphere. So if you are in Newport, visit The Landing. Grab yourself a John Daly (Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka & Lemonade) and watch some of the boats pull into the dock.

We sat outside and had calamari and drinks.

It was the best calamari I've ever had. Crispy but light, and not too chewy with a bit of a kick thanks to the peppers they cook it with.

The view is amazing, and the beers cheap and plentiful. It is probably the best place in Newport we ate at while we were there.

Ourdoor seating and the view is AWESOME. If you're doing drinks/appetizers, I'd highly recommend this place.

Food=meh. I was not impressed with anything that they had to offer. Crab cakes were pretty bad.. I felt like I was eating a patty of stuffing. Broiled whitefish was very bland. Fried fish sandwich somehow was bland too.  I started out with their clam chowder... Given their distance to the water and seafood markets around them, it was quite disappointing. I'd say that the best thing on their menu was their french fries.

Oh, and service isn't so great either.

Take my advice... drink here, then move on to a different restaurant for food.

    Why didn't I read before I went!
Male bartender, deer in headlight stare and we had to say hi. I hate being the one starting a conversation at their restaurant!
Food downright was rubbery and less than edible. If I wasn't drinking (what tasted like flat beer) I wouldn't have eaten the rubber clam fritters.

    Go elswhere.

The only quality of this restaurant that may be considered even plausibly redeeming was its location.

Otherwise, the food was down right unflattering.  The stuffed quahogs was essentially all stuffing and no clam, with their attempts to "spice things up" with chorizo falling flat on its face and melding into a monochromatic blur of bleh.

The oysters that came out were questionably warm to touch, but it is our own fault for still eating them (yes, we were THAT hungry) and probably pure luck that we survived with only mild stomach pangs a few hours later.

I was not impressed with the warm spinach salad, nor the oddly-coloured pieces of brie that were mingled amongst the greens.

In the end, the crab cakes were probably the only decent offerings we had a chance to eat, but not enough amongst all my other concerns to save it from a one star rating.

There are just too many other options around here to justify having to suffer through another meal at the Landing.  Keep on moving, is what I say.

Great location.  Perfect views.  Good service.  Those three things deserve 4 stars.

Calamari was ok.   A bit on the greasy side.  Crab cakes were good.  The New England Clam Chowder was tasty.  Chunks of clams & potatoes, creamy.  A family member had the Linguine & Clam Sauce, tasty &   perfectly seasoned.

I had the Mushroom Artichoke Salad.  Although I thought it was raw mushrooms, they were sauteed.  Unfortunately, everything else was swimming in salad dressing.

I personally think of myself as a good tipper.  I usually leave at a minimum 20%... I don't have a problem w/ restaurants adding the tip onto a bill for parties of ** or more only because I know that it's not mandatory for me to do so.  At this particular establishment, they add it for 6 people.  The issue I have is that our "6th" person, was a newborn.  Someone who did not order anything and did not have a seat at the table.  Due to stupidity... I give The Landing a 1 star.  For that... I will take my business elsewhere.  Shame on you...

Ended up here for some drinks to end my trip to Newport.

I have to admit with the other reviews that the pricing is a little out there.
    My pina colada was $9

Overall I did enjoy the atmosphere and being on the water front.
They had a band and there was a good turn out for a crowd.
Staff are friendly and quick to repsond to your needs.

I didn't get a chance to experience their food but I did enjoy a cup of their New England Clam Chowder.  It was full of potatoes and clams - and the broth was creamy with their own spices.  Totally reccomend giving that a try.
I reallty enjoy those Oyster crackers they always give you.. wish that had those in Toronto :P

    Just horrible.

We went to Newport yesterday to see John Pinette at the Newport Yachting Center and decide to get something to eat before hand. Having never been to Newport we pretty much spun ourselves around 3 times and pointed to a place.

We walked up to The Landing, which was packed but we were quickly sat upstairs in the corner with a nice view of the piers. (This will be the last nice thing I have to say).

Our waitress Natalie came over and took our drink and dinner orders. Our drinks came right out but I wish that I could say that the food did too. I know it takes time to cook food but was nearly 45 minutes for a couple burgers, some macaroni and cheese, and some fried seafood. Nothing was hot, or even close to being warm when it came to the table and the "macaroni and cheese" was nothing more than some curly macaroni, tomatoes, and a couple Kraft Singles melted on top, BLAAHHH.

Then 3 of us asked for refills but Natalie just walked away and only came back with 2, at this point I was disgusted with the service and the quality of the food that we got that I was all set. We kindly asked for the check from a frazzled and food stained Natalie, after 15 more minutes we were finally able to flag her down, pay and leave.

Also, it was sweltering the entire time that we were there, which may or may not have been The Landing's fault considering it was in the 80's yesterday.

This review is strictly service based as I was under the influence and unable to determine the actual taste of the food.

We came here with a group of about 15 on a Saturday for a bachelorette party with a 7:30 reservation.  We were seated promptly, presented with drinks quickly and appetizers for those that ordered them. After that is where things get hairy.

We waited over an hour and a half for our meals with no explanation, no apology, and not so much as a basket of rolls to hold us over.  The drinks kept flowing however, putting several us in a bad position.  It wasn't until I begged for baskets of bread that we were given anything to tide us over.

I realize we were a big group but it appeared this place was used to accommodating this size of a party and perhaps there was a kitchen issue.

The aggravating part was no explanation, no apology, nothing! Thank God for the bread, it surely saved some of us from reaching the point of no return. This isn't the level of service I'd expect from a pricey waterfront spot.

I'd come here again for drinks, as the bar scene geared up shortly after we were finished with "The World's Longest Dinner". Next time I'll bring my own loaf of bread to soak up excess alcohol.

Enjoyed my first fresh whole lobster here at Landing and loved it!

Honestly, I did agree with the pricing for the most part, unlike many other reviewers. $45 market price for a fresh lobster from the wholesaler next door...not to shabby. And I have to say that lobster was delicious!! My date had the lobster roll and said it was one of the best he's had. The prices looked similar to the other more upscale restaurants on the wharf. The service was alright, nothing over the top.

The restaurant is on the waterfront and has many choices when it comes to seating...indoor, outdoor, you name it. We chose the upper deck that looked right out in to the harbor at all the boats and it was very nice. I can see why people say the crowd here can be snooty, but who cares? Enjoying the company I'm with and enjoying the food is all I worry about. We probably made quite a scene laughing while snapping some interesting pictures with my lobster's shell! :)

Overall a wonderful and memorable experience and Landing!

That sentiment seems to allow this restaurant on the water to charge ridiculous covers and over-charge for drinks.  I was there this past weekend, and it was $7 for a 10 oz. beam'n'coke.  Ridiculous.  It was $5 just to enter to the patio, which is half asphalt anyway, to listen to some fuck-jack douche-up some songs on his acoustic.  To get upstairs, which is "the place to be" for some reason, they wanted to charge another $15.  It's always been like this at the Landing for as long as I've known.  It's always drawn a huge crowd on Wednesday for no apparent reason at all.  There sure as hell aren't any specials on Wednesdays.

I give it 2 stars, because I gave the Pelham one, and it's slightly better than that crap.

If you really do need to go here, go early.  You can avoid paying cover for upstairs by doing this, but you'll still pay shitloads for drinks.
