When in Davis visiting friends, we enjoy this little gem. Today, a violinist was playing in the patio out front. Quite lovely. We sat along the window amongst the pillows and enjoyed some freshly prepared yumminess. My friend had the schnitzel and I had the stuffed French toast. Divine! My friend created her own 'iced coffee' with a glass of ice and a cuppa joe. The wait staff were friendly, even chasing us down to bring a book we had inadvertently left behind. The restaurant is also kid friendly as I brought Miss A with me, and they didn't seem to mind her happy antics. As always, a lovely meal with VN, and a great place to grab a lovely meal.
Review Source:I haven't been here during day time hours, but I've been here several times at night. The bartenders are super friendly and are good at making you feel welcomed. It's not as crowded as it gets in other places during a weekend night, but that makes it all the more better. It's a good little escape from all the chaos going on sometimes. Definitely a place to check out when you want a good drink and to listen to live DJs.
Review Source:cute outdoor area to sit and sip on some beers.
The Crispy Almond Duck "CzNuggets" were pretty good
Sausage Plate with sauerkraut and potatoes (Opékaná klobása)
Choice of 2 sausages: Bratwurst(2,3),  Knockwurst(2,3,4),  Rindswurst(3),  Weißwurst(3)- was an awesome thing to share with friends. They were all tasty
We were pleasantly surprised by this small random place.
AMAZING FOOD! that is if you like Czech food, and if you don't, you shouldn't be eating here in the first place. The beers that they have on tap are delicious, a tad pricey, but worth it. At night is when little Prague comes alive. pool table and full bar. My favorite bar in Davis for sure.
Review Source:We've been here quite a few times, but we never go when the drinking is hot and heavy, so we have always had a pleasant experience. Â We got there early for brunch recently, and the chocolate bear claw was delicious with big cups of coffee. Â I ordered the Farmer's plate, it was much lighter and less greasy than I feared, but as substantial as I had hoped. Â We also bought a steaming loaf of sourdough bread right out of the oven. Â We like the fact that there are various attractive indoor/outdoor seating options so you can choose your comfort level depending on weather and time of day.
Review Source:Have again: the sauerkraut was my first bite at lunch and it was simply delicious. The homemade bread and dumplings were also very good. This is a lovely restaurant, reminding me of a country setting in Chile (yes, I know Czech Republic is a long way away from Chile, but still it is a beautiful setting). Good and friendly service.
Not have again: the pork roast was dry and not flavorful. The apple strudel was good but not sweet enough for my taste (note: the server did warn me that the strudel was not all that sweet).
Went here for the first time today foe lunch with the Boyfriend! It was awesome...great food, not overwhelming portions and amazing selections of tea, food, drinks, and (of course) dessert! I really loved the European atmosphere and that we could actually take our time enjoying the day. Their outside patio is covered in trees and vines with lights strung up and large brick fire places. It was like a small fairy cottage in the middle of Davis! We will definitely be back.
Review Source:3 1/2 stars. Â I think you come to this restaurant mainly for the ambience (and the deserts). The food is good, but it is simple and homey, and not necessarily "wow" if that is what you are looking for.
We ate brunch there today to celebrate my Dad's birthday. We were seated on their outdoor ivy covered brick patio, and it was quite pleasant on a sunny spring day. Â The place doesn't seem to be too busy at 11 AM (the university students are all sleeping in?), and there were only maybe 3 or 4 other tables of people when we first arrived. We almost felt like we were enjoying the birthday on someone's private patio.
Our waiter was friendly, but the food and drink service was definitely slow (even though they didn't appear to be busy), so I wouldn't come here if you are in a hurry. The Bloody Mary when it did come was very good--nice and spicy and they didn't skimp on the alcohol. I ordered the French Toast for my entrée. It was good, not overly sweet, and made from an eggy bread that almost reminded me of Challah bread. My husband ordered the green salad with chicken breast. The chicken was nicely marinated and tender, had a great grilled flavor, and the Italian dressing had the perfect balance of vinegar without being too bitey.
They have a whole display case of beautiful looking deserts so we figured we had to try one. We tried their Josephine Napoleon it was awesome. We loved the creamy custard filling paired with the puff pastry and fresh blackberries and whipped cream. Their menu says it is "sprinkled with powdered sugar only to "gild the lily." I really loved that the desert was only lightly sweetened with the powdered sugar since really sugary deserts are a turn off to me.
I would definitely come here again to enjoy their patio dining.
I ate here while visiting and really liked the food. Â I have spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe (Hungary and the Czech Republic) and like this style of cooking. Â Note that this is not a Hungarian restaurant but a lot of Hungarian cuisine was influenced by the Austrians in the days of the Empire and is similar to what you find at this restaurant. It is hard to find good Eastern European food in the places in the US I frequent, so I particularly enjoyed my dinner here. Â To me this is real comfort food - potatoes, red cabbage, schnitzel with gravy which reminds me of the chicken fried steak I grew up with in Texas. Â Portions are huge! Â The service and setting were great.
Review Source:Little Prague is very authentic Czech Restaurant from the 90's The food is really good, like home. The dishes I've had on couple of visits were done better than I'd prepare them myself and they have very good baker. They deserts are delicious, good variety and the restaurant bakes fresh bread.
But the authenticity does not stop there. They've got czech beer on tap and not just some usual exports, but the beers you actually get in Czech pubs today. I was very pleasantly surprised. It's clear the owner is doing his best to bring a little bit of home into California.
The staff was all very friendly, joked around with us. We had a really pleasant time dining there. It has been like that every time I've visit the restaurant. Still I've read negative reviews and I understand well how they come to pass. Czech people don't pretend. They don't fake smile even if you are rude to them, just because you are a customer. If you come off as an asshole right off the bat, then expect the cold shoulder treatment. Actually I'm surprised how gently those guys were still treated after being total jerks to the staff, by their own admission. If the pub was full of Czech patrons at the time of those incidents, they'd probably walk away with broken teeth as well. Remember the golden rule, and treat people like you want to be treated.
Having eaten here only once several years ago, I cant say much about the food (though I remember it was good). Im mostly here for the nightlife. A little dance floor, a long bar, a couple tables, and a pool table sound good to me. I like coming during the summer when you can sit outside with your drinks so you dont have to stand around inside. The music is decent, they definitely dont stick to the Top 40s Only playlist that the other bars in Davis do, which is refreshing.
Review Source:A friend and fellow Davis grad invites me here regularly when he passes through town. Â I'm not exactly sure why. Â One of the few classy joints in town when we went here that's still around is the only reason I can think of.
The food here is okay. Â I'm usually here on weekends in mid-mornings, so the brunch menu is what I'm most familiar with (I didn't come here when I was a student ever. Â Neither did he. Â It's weird.) Â The pork roast isn't very tender, it's a bit dry despite being in a pool of juice and the portion is small. Â I like the house sauerkraut, which has a mellow sour note to cut through the meat but not strong enough to overwhelm the flavors. Â The dumplings are just plain weird.
Same with the goulash. Â It's not particularly flavorful or spicy - the general profile is thick, salty tomato soup. Â A light serving of meat and vegetables, but it's not particularly thick either.
I've never been here when it's been busy, but it does seem to take wait staff forever to help us. Â Food also takes a good amount of time to come up. Â As I mentioned above, the portions are on the small size, and despite the ~$10 brunch entree price, expect the final per-person totals to be on the high size.
Also, just a warning - I participated in a Q&A, "text your answer for a prize" challenge they had a couple years ago. Â That led to an avalanche of text-ads telling me about all the specials going on at Little Prague, and all the "Who is this?!" and "STOP TEXTING ME" follow up texts from other victims. Â Hopefully they've stopped this ill-advised text-ad strategy that shares the phone numbers of their customers with strangers.
This is our favorite date night place to go in Davis. From our cozy corner table, to the spot on service, the hearty delicious dinner menu and often times, live music - every time we go is our favorite time.
We have tried different items on the menu and the specials, we have never been disappointed.
I thiink their weekend Brunch is the best in Davis.
Worst night life experience ever not because of the completely ordinary (read boring) atmosphere which I had gotten accustomed to during my time as an undergrad ('08 alumnus), but because of the incredibly rude management, security personnel, and owner.
A group of lady friends and I stopped by the place in the evening hrs. of Picnic Day '12 for drinks and karaoke. Everything was going fine until I went to the ladies room. While waiting in a sizable line I was directed to portable restrooms, that looked legit, located, through a door, right next to the ladies' room. I explicitly asked if there was a catch--did my due diligence--and was assured it was safe and fine etc. After using said restroom I tried to reenter through the same doors I used to exit and was detained by the same security guard who previously assured me it would be cool. I was not allowed reentry while other similarity situated women folk were allowed reentry with no hassle. I asked to speak to the manager. The manager, or head of security, whoever the fuck he was, had the motherfucking audacity to ask me to apologize to the security guard. I refused and was kicked out. I was directed to the owner by other patrons. I complained to him about the incident only to be shooed away; he literally made a shooing motion in my direction and completely blew me off. For the record I was not drunk and did not, at anytime, disrespect anyone at the establishment (while inside, at least) even though the personnel was incredibly rude, disrespectful, and completely disinterested in the customer experience. As I left I told the bouncer: "Fuck you, fuck this place, and I'm gonna Yelp-it!" So here we are.
The girls and I went to the G St. Wunderbar after and had a much better experience.
The lunch menu is very reasonable with almost every plate under ten dollars.
I have been going to the Bar side of LP for many years while I lived in Davis. I no longer frequent the bar as I've moved to Sacramento, but I absolutely love their food. They offer a Bohemian menu (Czech, Austrian, Hungary) with items such as goulash, paprikash, schnitzel, fine breads and desserts, and yummy specials like Stroganoff. This kind of food is darn near impossible to locate in the greater Sacramento area. A few places have sausages or schnitzels, but I could count the places who serve paprikash/goulash on one hand missing fingers!
Bar-wise, it is a great spot with a huge bar and large patio. Drink prices seem much, much higher now than they used to be, but that's not that surprising, especially for Davis. In any case, it is a great hangout spot with lots of space, fire pits, and a dancefloor on the weekends.
Nothing makes me happier than an amazing eggs Benedict for breakfast, and almost nothing makes me sadder than eggs Benedict gone wrong. If you are going to offer eggs Benedict on your menu, your kitchen staff must be able to properly poach an egg. I'm baffled by how this basic concept escapes the understanding of so many restaurants. The eggs Benedict here is just not up to par. The yolks were hard, the English muffin was burned around the edges, and the Hollandaise was bland.
I did like the kitschy decor and the random pictures on the walls, such as the computer printed size comparison of "The California Republic vs. The Czech Republic" or the advertisement for "A Very Jazzy" Evening"
I would give it another shot during lunch or dinner to try some of their traditional dishes, but unfortunately, I will probably not be back for breakfast.
A little overpriced but really delicious! Â I would take anything the waiter/waitress recommends.
The staff is also incredibly friendly and welcoming which is why I always bring my family there. Â As to the comment about her (I'm assuming older woman?) being racist - that's terrible if it's true. Â I will say she definitely did not seem racist to me or my asian family.
The atmosphere is nice and it's very pretty, however they are far too expensive for what they sell, and for the quality. (Though maybe I have been spoiled by my grandmother's cooking, and the cooking of Central Europe when I have gone to visit family.) The menu's offerings are large enough in number.
The owner is not a favorite of mine. Also, because I've heard she's racist from several people who've heard her making comments against latino workers, I don't want to support her business.
I have no reason to come back.
Two stars instead of one because it was at least pretty.
It's a great fine dining experience if you are looking for one in Davis. Â The atmosphere with the decor, layout and leisurely music makes this place a pleasure to enjoy. Â The exterior reminds me of a small cottage and the interior has a cozy, classy feeling to it.
It was my first time trying Czech cuisine. Â My friend and I tried the spinach soup, knockwurst (mix of pork, beef and garlic sausage) and beef goulash. Â The flavor of all the food is not up to par. Â It's pretty bland for the most part. Â
Spinach soup was good, but not the greatest spinach soup I have ever tried.
For the sausage selections, you can choose if you want pork, beef or veal in the sausage which I thought was interesting. Â They also give you a variety of mustard for you to dip the sausage into. Â This was my most favorite dish, but probably the mustard helped out with boosting the flavor.
Looking back at the menu right now for the sausage description, I am NOW UPSET that they didn't serve us the sauerkraut or potatoes that IS SUPPOSE TO COME WITH the sausage!! Â No wonder! Â Because when they served the sausage dish out, it was simply a sausage on a plate! =( Â No side carbs or veggies, but simply a sausage on a plate. How unappetizing and rude. Â
Their beef goulash was average. Â Presentation was simple - with beef stew next to bread slices. Â I expected a "wow" taste to this entree, but it just didn't happen. Â There was really no flavor to their beef sauce. Â Disappointed.
Bottom line: I think I was paying the price for the classy dining and decor, but not for the flavor and worth for the food.
IT"S SOOOOO EXPENSIVE!!!!!!
My lady and I did a double date here and man our bill was like $130 or so...don't quote me on that but it was high.
But the food was pretty good. I got a beef goulash, beef in a gravy, with a delicious piece of bread but it was like $17. Only reason I was full is bc of the bread they brought to the table.
Buy a loaf of their bread, its nomy-tsunami.
Everyone else enjoyed their food but the price point was agreed on was a bit to high.
~Bar Review~
This place is very hit-or-miss. I've had some truly awesome times here and some pretty crumby times.
This is the type of joint that undergrad students really ruin. The younger crowd that comes for the dancing is typically rude and unconcerned with proper patronage. They generally treat the place like a frat party. I could do without the bros.
I like coming here on Mondays for the karaoke. Drinks can be somewhat pricey, and they really don't have a cheap draught option. Count on paying $10 plus tip for a litre of beer.
One awesome part about Prague is the flaming shots. The absinthe experience comes with a festive presentation that is sure to please out-of-towners. For something to add to the debauchery of your evening, try a Flaming V-bomb or a Tweakin' Puerto Rican. Flaming Dr. Pepper is always a hit.
Came in with my friend last night for dessert and coffee.
$6.50 any dessert
The coffee came warm but NOT hot, so that cooled off to cold very fast. Â Nothing like cold coffee to wash down our less than savory desserts.
The desserts themselves were not that good.
My friend had the puffed pastry dessert with 2 layers in between, 1 with their gross fake cream (blech), and a custard layer (better but not great).
I had the chocolate and cherry cake with a cherry on top. I had to pick mine apart just to eat the chocolate cake because the cream in the cake was stiff and not fresh. Â Disappointing - $20 covered both of us.
The owner was there. Â I had heard through other folks that he was not a very nice fellow. Then I read the comments in Yelp about what he was heard saying, absolutely NOT NICE.
It was DEAD last night (a Wedn night). There was a band that did an hour of sound check and about 7 of us in the bar. I don't think anyone showed up to watch the band. Â I felt bad for them.
Probably won't be back again.
I'm not particularly one to shy away from spending good money for good food, but in the case of Little Prague, I spent way too much money on food I probably could have made myself. Â
It was in the middle of winter quarter at UC Davis, and it was the first Valentine's Day for my girlfriend and me together. Â I had just gotten out of my anatomy open lab, ran to Safeway for some roses while still in scrubs (great planning, I know), and made a quick reservation for Little Prague. Â When we got there, we were given a seat outside of the main dining room, despite the fact that there was plenty of room inside. Â My girlfriend didn't seem to mind, so we just take our seats. Â We order our meals, I order a beer (Czechvar, pretty good beer - "the original Budweiser," the owner told me...not a particularly good selling point for me, but it was good nonetheless), and we had our meal...with minimal attention from the waiting staff. Â 90% of the time, I just saw them chatting at the cash register. Â Lovely. Â
The appetizers and soups were alright, but nothing to write home about. Â My girlfriend's main course, what appeared to be more or less a sliver of steak, was fine in flavor (albeit minuscule...). Â My main course, however - two pieces of lamb - was tiny, tasteless, and worst of all, UNDERCOOKED. Â I told the waiter, who politely apologized, brought it back, probably had the cook toss it around in a pan for a few more minutes, then returned it to me. Â Good on the waiter, shame on the cook. Â Dessert was also completely underwhelming - two conservatively-cut pieces of "gourmet" vanilla and raspberry chocolate cake. Â We shared both pieces. Â Nothing you couldn't get at a local bakery better and for less. Â
Then the bill. Â In the ballpark of $145. Â I do wish they would have at least left some Hershey's Kisses with the bill. Â Why, you ask? Â BECAUSE I LIKE A FEW KISSES BEFORE I GET SCREWED. Â Mediocre attentiveness and genuine care from the waiting staff; sub-par quality food for the supposed caliber of restaurant this was supposed to have been; 20% gratuity already included in the bill, which was wholly undeserved; it was no wonder the place was so empty that night. Â
They can probably count on me not returning unless perhaps I'm feeling a little masochistic with my money and have a hankering for bland, "authentic" Czech cuisine.
~OWNER REVIEW~
I don't have much to say for this place. My one and only experience here is
enough for me to want to tell everyone my story.
I was invited for drinks at Little Prague by a friend who lives in Davis. Word on the street is that this place is THE place to be on a Thursday evening.
We took a seat at the bar. As we were enjoying our drinks, the owner was training a new employee on the other side of the bar. The owner was showing his new hire how to properly wash the glasses and this is what the owner had to say about the glassware:
"You have to be careful with these glasses. They're from China. They break easily. Those Chinese screw me over with their cheap glasses. That's why I don't hire Asian people. And Mexicans too."
And the owner looked at my friend, who happens to be Mexican, and I to see if we heard him. Yeah, I heard you, buddy. Loud and clear.
We left Little Prague shortly after.
I visit Davis quite frequently and I refuse to support an establishment that doesn't like my kind of people, whatever that may be. Screw this place. I'm going somewhere where the owner isn't openly racist. Thanks, anyway.
Cheers!
We came here for dinner, drinks and dessert with a large group. Â When we got there, I noticed a banner out front advertising happy hour- $4 24 oz beers and half off all appetizers. Â Since happy hour appetizers is one of my favorite things in the world, I naturally got pretty excited. Â While everyone was looking over the menu for dinner, I went up and ordered the appetizer platter and asked what beers were on tap. Â Surprise! Â They don't honor their advertised happy hour special- only two beers were discounted, and the appetizers were all full price.
(I should note that the banner had specific specials for certain days, which was what we were there for- I even went outside and double checked to make sure I read the sign right. Â I did. Â They might have happy hours on other days and times, but I'm never going to go back to find out).
Despite being disappointed by the misleading ad, I got a beer anyways, which wasn't a terrible deal, although having more selection would have been nice. Â But the servers were rude and slow (and visibly angry at me for questioning why they weren't serving their advertised special). Â The food that we did get was subpar. Â Not worth the effort.
Little Prague....sigh...where do I begin.....
LP is like the kinda sorta hip coat you see in a store in Union Square that you really like the way it looks, comfy, cozy, etc. Â The problem is that after you buy that melange of threads only to find out later that the lining evaporated and the stuffing is coming out.
Good analogy?? Â Maybe, maybe not. Â All I know is the outside and inside of this charming little restaurant has food that makes Elmers glue taste good by comparison. Â I have been maybe five times, each time trying a different dish - each one is as bland as the prior. Â It's like the cook doesn't have a spice rack. Â Thank god I was never paying for this paste-like food.
Are there no salt mines in the Czech Republic?
Ya feel me?
Eh.
First off - service here is slow and awkward when it does come. "What's good here?" "Everything." "What do you recommend?" "Everything."
Really, dude? I beg to differ.
Not every country can be known for their cuisine - I'm just telling it like it is. And Czech food is not really known for bold or intense flavors, so don't expect a party in your mouth by any means. Plates run pricey (at dinnertime, at least) - entrees are at least $18, and specials can run up to $40ish (also, they charge $3 if you want to split a plate - wtf? How is that warranted?) I can justify paying up to, really, ANY price for food, if the occasion appropriately calls for it and if it's worth it. Little Prague has definitely fallen flat, here. I want my money (a LOT of my money, as a starving grad student, mind you) back, please. To be fair, I did scan the lunch menu and the prices seem more reasonable, then. But it still stands that, from the fair sampling of their dishes that I'd had at dinnertime, flavors are lacking. Â
Lots of sausages are offered, and meats (schnitzels) breaded and served with bland potato sides (potato salads, fried potatoes that are basically home fries that you get at any generic brunch place) sum up most of their entrees. Their dumplings are flat spongey breads that are decent soaked in whatever gravy-based sauce your meat comes with, but nothing to really rave about. The food here is hearty, but by no means satisfying or tasty.
I was mostly curious about the duck nuggets, which were admittedly tasty (breaded chunks of duck meat dipped in a tomato-based sauce). But, considering what I paid for everything else just to have a random appetizer be the saving grace of the meal . . . please, I'd rather save Daffy's life.
There is a lot not to like about Little Prague, the food (At least for vegetarians) is pretty mediocre, the beer comes out of the filthiest taps I've ever encountered, and the atmosphere can vary from cave-like to worse.
I know Czech food isn't known for being vegetarian friendly, but if someone opens up a restaurant in Davis, I expect them to make an effort. The majority of the dishes are bland at best, and can be downright inedible at times (How is it that no-one in this town can cook an eggplant?). The blissful exception to this rule are the potato pancakes, which I admit are to die for. As well, if you are in the mood for sweets, the Princess cake is pretty remarkably good. True it's green, but once you overlook that, it's rather tasty.
They pride themselves in their selection of authentic Czech beers, which usually means the kegs have been sitting around for months and months getting stale. Most of the beers have that thick cardboard aroma that is so often associated (rightly so) with imported lagers. Luckily, the tap lines at Little Prague seem to have never been cleaned, so all of their beers come out with that nice acidic, mouth-coating feel that only a good bacterial contamination can provide.
It's easy to get lured in by the cute European exterior, but inside lies a place that is best left alone.
Worst meal in Davis, and I lived here for over 20 years. I live elsewhere now, but still visit my parents a lot.
Completely over priced. Salad had Kraft ranch dressing on it. "Special" was something like $35---to eat at a table in the dark with a plastic chair? Are you kidding?
Everything was awful. I will never go back.
This little gem is completely underrated. After a night of bar hopping, I have to say this was one of my top 2 favorites. The music is good, the bar is clean and there are plenty of liquor choices, there are plenty of seats and tables, and I also like their decorations.
They also will make special drinks for you upon your request! My friend chose a drink from her iPhone application and the bartender did not hesitate to put it together and it was delicious..for only $6.50. That's quite cheap for special cocktails that usually run $8-$10 elsewhere.
Overall I would come here again for drinks or hanging out. I haven't been here to eat but I do know they hold special events all the time..they are having an all you can eat buffet in honor of Oktoberfest!
So I was driving along with my boyfriend in Davis and we were looking for a place to eat. It was night time so the first thing that caught my eye was the fire burning right outside of Little Prague. It looked pretty awesome so I said to my boyfriend hey, let's go there. So there we went.
Food was pretty good. I had the asparagus soup thing which was pretty tasty (the only other soup they had that night was lamb vegetable thing). I can't remember the name of the entree I had, but to put it in the words of the waitress, it was like 'a big chicken nugget.' And it actually did indeed taste like a giant chicken nugget.
Dessert was awesome. It was some pastry thing with chocolate and cream and I don't remember what it was called either but it was good. Seems like I can't really remember much of what anything was called there - maybe it was because I was DISTRACTED. But why, oh why was Tevina distracted? WELL! I'll tell you why!
The reason is also why Little Prague only gets two measly stars instead of the four it might have deserved.
The waitress. Skinny little asian chick with a nasally voice and talks way too much. Thanks for bashing the ambiance of a nice dinner for me you worthless little skank - because there's so much a girl can take when watching a waitress flirt at her boyfriend during dinner while he's sitting directly across from her. Not a smart idea.
During my 'fine dine' at Little Prague, I learned that the waitress loves the disgusting potato salad there and that she could eat an entire bowl if you gave it to her. She went to Berkeley for school (and is now a waitress, LAWL) and lived in the Sunset dist. and thought it was strange because she could never see the sun from the Sunset district. She also likes giant chicken nuggets. She also likes touching my boyfriend on the shoulder and the arm. I like touching my boyfriend there too. BUT YOU DON'T SEE ME DOING THAT IN PUBLIC, NOW DO YA? DO YA?! Oh and also, I ALMOST FORGOT - I'm his girlfriend. I -CAN- touch him on the shoulder and the arm (and other places too!). YOU - 'miss chugs potato salad' should NOT be doing that.
Anyway. Last time I reviewed a place in cow-town the owner contacted me. Had a nice little chat. I gave the place some more stars. It was quite nice. Now if the owner of Little Prague reads this review, go on and fire the slutty asian waitress because next time she lays a finger on my man I will show her how wonderfully hot the sun can be by shoving her stanky little face into the fire pit outside. It's technically not the sun, but it still works because it's super hot, you know? I'll be roasting my giant chicken in that fire too, talk about efficiency.
I haven't gone to this joint for food. I've only came for the nightlife, which is alright.
The main drawback for me about this place is that you might have to pay a $3 cover just to get in. This might only be for Friday and Saturday nights.
The bartenders seemed to be really friendly and like to strike up some conversations. I once asked the bartender what to order and they suggested to get this birthday cake drink. It was pretty good and it really tasted like birthday cake.
I would highly recommend getting this birthday cake drink.
There's a dance floor but it seems no one ever really dances here.
The interior is alright. Outside there is a fire pit which is always nice for a cold night or romantic dinner.
Again, I never had the food, but I wouldn't mind trying it. It seems interesting.
Lastly, word on the street is that the owner is a jerk. He is some tall man.
Yeah, I don't know what else to say about that, just watch out.
If you're apart of an organization on campus, you can host a dance party here in the back room. Inquire this to them. I'm not sure about the details.
Anyway, this is a definitely a place to check out in Davis for some nightlife but not on the top of the list.
I've never wanted a place to fail so badly. Me and some work buddies used to go here for their happy hour. Pilsner Urquel on tap and the appetizer platter were great. Our server Marcela was always awesome. She knew what we liked and usually put the order in and had beers on the table as soon as we sat down. But I will have to agree that the owner is not a nice person. He attacked one of my buddies once. Cops came and everything. I stayed away for a few years and then some new buddies wanted to get a St. Patty's day drink there. The owner was there again. He's there all the time. He's there too much. I've heard too many stories to ever want to go back.
So I won't.
There were 5 of us and we all had a bit of booze prior to our Lil' Prague experience. We walked in and the place reeked of pretension: white linen, snooty servers (including the owner) and even a violin player busting out classical standards.
We got drunker and were totally obnoxious. I felt like Elwood and Jake Blues when they go to Chez Paul to recruit Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin back into the Blues Brothers....you know, when they order Dom Perignon and ask the dude "How much for you women? How much for the little girl?"
Loud, vulgar, hysterical....we stood out like sore thumbs. The nazi yuppy Davisites dining there were giving us dirty looks and talking shit. Still, with the amount of booze we drank I'm sure we spent WAYYYY more money then them and tipped 30%, so there!
The sausages were good. Unfortunately I ordered the Chicken Paprakash which was bland and tasted like the food they serve at Hidden Oaks Retirement Community or some shit. The garlic soup was AMAZING though....super garlicky broth and very simple ingredients - a couple chunks of ham, a few small potatoes. They have some great alcohol options, too, like Becherovka, a delicious spicy Czech liquor, or the Prince Julep which is like a Mint Julep but made with Becherovka instead of Rum.
As everyone mentioned previously, it is pretty expensive though.
Like most places I've been to, I really can't comment on the food...
I've been here twice on Thursday's "pink night"
The first time, I came alone. I had a few drinks and left. There were some 'mos and their squawking flocks of hags. I guess my excitement for an actual gay bar got the best of me...next time, I'll just go to Sac or come back to the City.
The next time, I came with friends after dinner. It was better being with a group, but that's the case almost anywhere.
Now, the real review. The drinks suck. Sorry to say. No offense, but us homos are used to a heavy hand on the pours.
The second star is for hosting the only queer night in Davis.
The sad thing about Little Prague is that it used to be a vegetarian restaurant called The Blue Mango. How I loved the Blue Mango. How I miss the Blue Mango.
Little Prague has very few vegetarian selections-it's mostly a meat kinda place. Very ironic that it replaced an all organic, veggie restaurant.
The prices are very high.
The location and courtyard are appealing and nice to eat in.
But I would not choose to come here. I only come with my grandma, because she loves the authenticity of the place.
I just go along, buy a drink, and dream of the Blue Mango.
