Best sushi on MV.
Grab a date, your friends or your spouse and get on down here. This is just a perfect summer spot if you like sushi and a welcoming atmosphere. If you get a parking spot, you are a lucky person. But if you have to park far, far away, that's okay. The sushi will make you happy, the drinks will make you even happier, so you will forget about the horrible parking in OB.
I went there because I was looking for a sushi place in MV and one guy at the donut store recommended me this place. I was really happy with my salmon sashimi, it was super fresh and delicious, just amazing!!! It's funny because this place doesn't look like a sushi place at all...
I can't stop thinking about that salmon....
After biking around the island all day we were starving and just missed the ferry. This place was close to the ferry and seated us right away! They serve sushi and typical American/Seafood Bar food. The sushi was overpriced (a lot of the things on the island is also) so I didn't even want to try it because sushi from a real Japanese restaurant is cheaper and authentic. I ordered a sandwich which was HUGE and my boyfriends burger was also pretty big. The food is 2-5 dollars more then typically but I think that's because they get so much tourist. My sandwich was delicious and they gave me plenty of home fries. My boyfriend also enjoyed his burger. The place has T.V's all around and the Red Sox game was on, it was an enjoyable experience.
Review Source:The service was nice, but doesn't make up for the overpriced food and poor presentation. Paper plates and plasticware abound. For $100 lunch I'd expect more. The coconut shrimp came out of a freezer box and the supposedly chunky lobster bisque had zero lobster. I'd pass on this place.
Review Source:If you could only eat at one restaurant in Oak Bluffs you should choose the Lookout Tavern. Â The friendly, efficient staff, the view, the food (especially the calamari, scallops, mahi mahi special), and overall value are second to none.
After coming to Oak Bluffs for 30+ years we hate getting stuck eating the same food at the same places but the Lookout never gets old.
Don't change a thing.
So happy we asked the locals where they like to eat! Â We were only on the island for a couple of days and had a fabulous lunch here. Â Arrived just before noontime and we timed it right. Â Got a table looking out over the ocean and the place filled up shortly after. Â Drinks were amazing, I had their punch and my husband had a "Mary & the Boys", an outstanding Bloody Mary made all the more wonderful with the addition of 2 jumbo shrimp. Â I had the fish & chips, all lightly fried and fresh tasting, he had the fish tacos and we were happily full when we left. Â Big thumbs up to a friendly and professional staff as well!
Review Source:I was visiting Martha's Vineyard and came here for the first time on the recommendation of the B&B I was staying at. I was told this place is a favorite with the locals. I arrived just in time for happy hour on a Thursday afternoon and the place wasn't too busy yet so we got a table facing the water with an amazing, unobstructed view.
At happy hour we ordered $1.50 local Edgartown oysters and $1 Littleneck clams. Both were shucked really cleanly, no sand or bits of shell, really great! For dinner we got the fish tacos and chicken walnut salad sandwich, both of which were solid but not too memorable. The homemade chips that came with the sandwich though there absolutely delicious. I'm normally not a chips person but I couldn't stop eating them.
I'd definitely recommend dropping by this place if you find yourself in Oak Bluffs, the view is unbeatable, the food is solid and the service is very friendly!
I'm a CA native and was visiting Martha's Vineyard on vacation with my bf's family. I was visiting a client in Boston so I got a later ferry and was waiting for bf to pick me up, but I was on VACATION so I was a getting a drink (darn it!). I came to Lookout Tavern from a recommendation and got their special drink (I think it was called shipwreck or something like that). It was definitely amazing and got my week long vacation started off right, especially being able to sit at the bar on the deck and look directly at the water! Also, the server was very nice even though I only ordered one drink.
Thanks Lookout Tavern!
Yummy sauteed lobster roll. The chips that came with it were delicious but were too greasy in the end. Too bad I didn't realize it until I ate ALL of them. Next time I'd eat the roll and only indulge in a couple of chips.
Also tried the fish and chips, cod. Tasted too fishy for me. Hehehe. I know. Cod is fish. But fresh fish shouldn't taste fishy.
The fried oysters were succulent and delicious. Only tried one from my friend's order. Would've loved to have more but my greasy chips made eating more impossible. :(
I can't speak to the food here, but it's a great bar! Â We sat at one of the high tables in the middle of the restaurant, with the expectation that we'd have to go up to the bar to order. Â Instead, despite the fact that it was a pretty busy night, the bartender took the time to walk around the bar and come over to our table to get our drink order. Â We ordered a couple of somewhat unusual drinks (whiskey old fashions) but he knew the drink and mixed them up straightaway. Â The long island ice teas were also excellent and strong despite being reasonably priced.
Overall, nice relaxed atmosphere. Â Made watching the football games even more enjoyable.
Based on the reviews, I was expecting much from this restaurant. Ah how we were led astray! Being from the Cape, we are used to the strange beast which is the "Cape tourist place standard menu" which apparently lives on MV too. This establishment featured that on one side, and sushi on the other. If I ate sushi perhaps I would be more excited. Aside from the sushi, the menu was completely average.
Our food was also, completely average. They feature a $2.75 upcharge for french fries. While their house-made chips are yummily house-made, their french fries tasted boringly frozen. My friend got the pesto chicken panini while I sampled the chicken salad on ciabatta. We both walked away feeling physically full, but oddly dissatisfied. The food lacked something. Also, their definition of ciabatta is not traditional - it's soft and almost a little sweet.
As for the ambiance and service - the place was completely packed! We had a tiny table in the corner which is fine because it was just the two of us and we just chatter away the whole time. Great views of the water and a nice little porch area. Our waitress was very attentive, friendly, and nice. We asked her to break our twenties and she didn't do that impatient waitress "fine" look that you sometimes get, she just cheerfully went off and did it.
In summation, the food was ok, the views were pretty and the waitress was great, but I wouldn't return. It was an enjoyable visit because of the company, but not really because of the food!
My friend and I took a day adventure to Martha's Vineyard and needed a quick place to eat after our original idea was closed for the day.
It was easy to find, nice view of the water and passing boats, which I personally enjoy. The restaurant was packed with people and we managed to find a table in the corner. Definitely not a whole lot of space. The service was great though! Our waitress was friendly, speedy quick and was exceptionally helpful with final menu choices.
The menu was two sided, one just with sushi (for all you sushi lovers) and the other seafood and other few other options. The food wasn't bad, but it didn't 'wow' me. The best way to describe it, was that it was just missing something. Â My friend agreed with her meal too. She had the chicken salad and I ordered the pesto chicken sandwich. Though the most of our food was just okay, the one thing we both really enjoyed were the homemade potato chips! Yum!
Overall, I thought the food was okay, the service and view was great and the pricing average for your typical tourist-y seafood dining experience!
Sushi and French fries? You got me. You got me good.
Besides the fact that the Lookout actually does look out over the gorgeous sound from Oak Bluffs, it's great for many reasons: a fabulous bar serving anything you could possibly want (including a delicious Dark 'n' Stormy), friendly staff, amazingly fresh and tasty sushi, and scrumptious fries.
Since it's right near the ferry terminal in the heart of OB and has outdoor seating, it can get super crazy. Luckily, they offer take-out which is exactly what I like to do. I get mysel fone of their Spicy Tuna Rolls (it actually has salmon in it, too!), a few nigiri and a side of fries. Weird, yes - but totally delicious. It can get pricey, so keep that in mind!
Too bad. Beautiful restaurant with an amazing view. Food was disappointing. I had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken and it with it's soggy chips were a salt bomb. It had sounded so mouth watering on the menu too- jamaican jerk chicken on a ciabbata roll w a coconut curry mayo. Â I didn't taste any coconut. Â When you have limited time on the island you want to have a good meal. Â The 2 star rating is for the building, view, and drinks.
Review Source:Delicious over-priced sushi.
It's a sports-bar overlooking the pier on MV. Of course it's going to be overpriced. I wish this place had A/C or opened up their walls more so that there'd be a better breeze, cuz boy, it got hot in there. The food was great though. Typical bar food plus amazing sushi, can't complain.
I've walked by this place many times. This year, because of other Yelp reviews, I took my family in. It is a bar atmosphere. So it was a little difficult for my 70 year old parents and 6 year old son, but it was very convenient for the ferry so I could see my parents off.
This is probably the best food from the open air restaurants on the docks in Oak Bluffs. Everything was very good, from the lobster bisque to the salads to the fried salmon sandwich. Parents had the sushi and said that was quite good (not my kinda thing). Â Prices are comparable to other waterfront restaurants in the area.
Although there was a 30 minute wait mid-afternoon and every table was packed, the service was very good. Was it perfect? No. But our server was attentive, caring and very friendly.
The view is nice but I prefer the views at the restaurants around the corner. If you are not outside or on the patio, it is very loud. But it's a bar. So I am not going to deduct points for that. I am not sure I would bring the family here again but if it were just my wife and I or just some friends I would certainly be back.
they are known for their view but honestly the food here isn't that good at all. The food are way overpriced and the service is ok. The view in itself is just a standard view by any ocean. My gf want here couple days ago and the server or the restaurant change their tips higher($30) and she only found out by looking at her bank statment. How shady is that??
Review Source:This place is great! Â No A/C, so if you aren't into the fresh air coming off the water, don't go here. Â It's had a face-lift recently and looks great! Â The high top tables and outdoor (under an overhang) seating are nice. Â The lobster roll was AMAZING. Â Lots of lobster, not too much roll -- good bang for your buck. Â Their homemade chips are delicious. Â We went with a group of 6 and everyone really liked their meals. Â It was so good, we went again later in the week for lunch while we waited for our ferry home. Â Cold beers, good food, sports bar like atmosphere -- we'll definitely be back!!
Review Source:The Lookout tavern is my favorite casual restaurant in the island. Â Â It's always consistent. Â The service is always good. Â The drinks are great. Â The sushi is the highlight. Â Â My favs are the Volcano Roll, edamame, and the pork dumplings things on the sushi menu. Â Also like the panini wrap things they have. Â I usually get the fried barbecue chicken on. Â Has a lot of flavor. Â Â Has a great atmosphere and fresh new look this year. Â Â Works well. Review Source:After an afternoon on the water my friend directed us here. Â We had a variety of sushi rolls and everyone I had was outstanding. Â Spicy tuna, dragon, summer roll...awesome!! Â Would have been another half point but the hostess didn't seem to believe we wee going to have dinner and was hesitant to seat us...
Review Source:We read the reviews on Yelp and decided Lookout Tavern was the place for us. Nice place, sports bar with a casual atmosphere, located right on the water's edge. When we visited Oak Bluffs in early June, the place was deserted, but Lookout Tavern must be a hangout for the locals, because this was the only place that was quite crowded. We were seated pretty quickly, our waitress was polite and pretty attentive.
We started with the Lobster Bisque and some Spicy Tuna Roll Sushi. Now whenever I go somewhere that offers bisque, I almost always order it. The lobster bisque offered here was out of this world delicious! The small bits of lobster that were in the soup gave it such a nice flavor and it was more enjoyable than fishing out the normally large chunks that come with most soups. The sushi was also delicious, which came as a surprise, us being accustomed to the fantastic NY sushi. Lookout Tavern's sushi could definitely compete. It was fresh, flavorful and there was a legit sushi chef that was making it across the room.
For our meal, we ordered two types of fish sandwiches. Both were massive, both tasted good, but in my opinion weren't anything special. The salmon in mine was cooked perfectly though, and my BF's sandwich was a little tastier than mine. But a warning to all the ladies who order these sandwiches, the type of bread used is so powdery we both ended up with it all over faces with every bite. Needless to say we had a good laugh and took some pictures to forever embarrass each other in the future.
Decent place, decent service, the prices were a bit too high and it was also a tad confusing when we came in there was no obvious place of where to stand to be seated or whether we should seat ourselves. Amazing lobster bisque, fantastic sushi, average sandwiches. In my opinion, just go for appetizers and sushi and call it day.
It is newly renovated for 2012 summer. quite expansive, BUT, it is a sport bar feel with tall bar tables, with chairs with no backs.
The crowds at the end of May, 2012 are quite down-to-earth guys in their 20s, slightly out of shape, and very loud. But not obnoxiously. All tabled are occupied but hardly anyone was eating at around 7-8pm.
The meals are all sushis on one half of the menu, and the other shows fried appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and nothing on the serious dinner plate choices at around $11-15. Very inexpensive.
The portions are quite big. However, although they are fresh looking, the taste is unimpressive, in my friend's term. For me, just lame-No flavor whatsoever. Considering the setting, prices, and the food quality, and how they are served, I guess this place is for the young who would like to have a good time without feeling the pressure of ordering expensive meals or drinks.
If you are over 30+ and sit there to eat at night, not for a drink, and you will definitely want to find a corner. And, the waitresses do not pay attention to the dinner guests but for the drinking patrons.
My major complaints are Â
1. they never have a designated sit-down area. So, for me, it is a sports bar trying to attract the tourist with tavern menu. not that smart tactic, but whatever works to collect the tourist money, I guess.
2. There are young local males, who feel very comfortable, and scream loudly bext to the dinner guests, Â watching ESTN on TVs. And, the manager has no control of them. And, it was very much compromised situations, while many other guest would raise their eyebrows.
3. they use plastic cups, utensils, and plates, Too much waste comes out at the end of the day -  very irresponsible, and This plastic everything is not a good way to showcase Eco Tourism on MV,  not nice to  the locals or for protecting the wildlife. This is why I drop their rating to 2 stars, otherwise 2.5 stars for my dinner experience.
We were in Oak Bluffs for a day and stopped in here for lunch after reading the good reviews on Yelp. I was not disappointed! We started with fresh, fresh fried clams, and then had a few sushi rolls. I also got a rum punch and our friends were happy to see a few good beers on the menu. Hubby got a really delicious (so he said) turkey club as well. The bar itself is really cute, definitely a typical beach bar feel, and the location is great right next to the ferry back to Falmouth.
Review Source:I'd go back. Â Only negative: Â The waiter could have been dressed a little more appropriately for being a waiter. Â
I thought the drinks were good. Â The fish sandwich was first: Â very quick, very good, very fresh and cheap! Â
The other guests were locals in Sept. Â It was a rather nice find in a pinch. Â Apparently the sushi is wonderful...that's what I was being told while they were eating. Â The view is also very very nice. Â
PS: Â I thought the waiter, albeit dressed down, was better than most other waiters. Â We had a good time here.
We came here for dinner and had a good time. It's definitely got the tavern feel - nothing fancy at all. The menu is extensive and has everything from sushi, to steak, to fried clams. A bit overwhelming - there is so much to choose from.
We got a couple rolls of sushi - they were pretty good. I was actually surprised with how much I liked it. I also had the fried clam roll which was REALLY good... but the fries were a bit of a let down. Tasted frozen.
All in all, good spot - nothing extraordinary. I think it would be nicer for lunch..
For a bar by the sea this place delivers. Â Nothing fancy but day trippers like us couldn't ask for more. Away from the tourist traps but easy to find.
My wife had snow crabs (not local ;-) and I had clam strips. Both were good and satisfying. The staff was nice and the view great.
Worth seeking out for a quick and easy bite.
Note that on a nice day the deck fills up. We walked by several hours later (around 4pm) and it was packed and this was a Wednesday afternoon.
I am definitely impressed that this place offers sushi. And it was good, but not great. I was disappointed since the sushi bar abutted the drinks bar, taking up so much of the tavern's precious little indoor space, and genuine sushi chefs were working it back there. That being said, I can't say I'm surprised, because it would have been too good to be true: such a rowdy tavern on the Marina just screamed good ol' New England -- no room for anything else.
Inside, the Lookout was packed, and as I stated above, it's tiny, so no wonder. But no one was there to greet you at the door and direct you through the mess of people. There was no indication that if we seated ourselves we would even be noticed. A bit of direction would have been nice.
We ended up sitting outside in a cute little picnic table area. We were warned ahead of time that the lighting would be a little insubstantial, and it's a mystery why that hasn't been remedied. The only thing I can think of is that there is a zone/code limit on lumens in that section of town. The lighting -- dim fluorescent lanterns hanging from the table's umbrella -- was okay, but I wouldn't have complained if it had been a little brighter.
The non-sushi food was standard pub fare. Nothing special, but it was good. Our party of four got a lobster roll, chicken fingers, maki (spicy tekka, eel roll, and "crab leg" -- it turned out to be whitefish...), and a fisherman's platter. All of the food was devoured -- but we were all really hungry.
Our waitress was pleasant and attentive and she never let our beer glasses sit empty.
Could the Lookout be better? Yes.
But it doesn't call itself by any other name (despite what aspirations you might have for it after learning of its sushi offerings), and as a tavern, it does okay.
I had a pretty good experience but my friends had better. Â I am unfortunately allergic to shell fish, so the lobster eaters prevailed. Â Their lobsters were huge and came with many sides, including sausage. Â My fries were excellent, but my steak was over cooked. Â
The worst thing was the sitting problem. Â You have to find your own seats, that is a negative.
This place quite possibly has everything that you might for a meal on MV.
-Amazing views
-Outdoor deck
-Blueberry Beer
-Tasty burger and pulled pork
-Great music
-Multiple tv' for sporting events
-Sushi chefs (in addition to bar food)
- Entertaining signs and decor
and most of all.....
- Reminder to Fahgehtaboutit all, you're on MV!
Great beach bar overlooking OB steamship wharf and all of Nantucket Sound. Outdoor deck, full bar, excellent sushi station. Great prices for the Vineyard. I had a fish sandwich and it enormous with all the sides for $10.95. Fresh and had a nice light batter (clean oil). Friendly staff, fun, beachy vibe. Â A hidden jewel (not you,Phooey Phantom) as its a little off the beaten track so most tourists don't see it.
