If you're looking for a bar that's not shy to boast a strong drink-- this is the place to come. Affordable and perhaps a bit of a dive, Manhattan has the character to attract some of the most unique Athenians in town.
One drink you have to have the pleasure of trying is their Red Blazer (rye whisky, bitters, Cheerwine from the bottle).
This might be my favorite bar. Â Ever. Â
I miss you, Manhattan. Â I miss T, my favorite bartender. Â I miss buying single Camel cigarettes for 25 cents (now 50! oh how the times have changed). Â I miss the ridiculous and gorgeous artwork. Â I miss Friday happy hours that last til 10 pm. Â Blenheim's extra spicy gingerale (cut it with Maker's Mark for a house special). Â Free popcorn with a shaker of nutritional yeast. Â Cheap strong drinks and a variety of beer on draft. Â And now they even have Cheerwine! Â Pretty much the awesomest place ever.
For sure one of the better bars around here... unless you're totally in love with the dirty, wasted college kid infested ones (correct answer: no!!). Once you walk in, you know you're dealing with a different animal - everything from the people to the bartenders to the decor to the popcorn machine (I'm still sad that I didn't get some... I would've, but I was majorly stuffed from dinner). There are ornaments dangling from the ceiling, which were fun to stare at... Or, maybe I was the only one oddly lured in. I don't really remember what I got. Vodka limeade? Probably. I enjoyed chilling here on my last night in Athens.
Review Source:Manhattan Cafe is probably my favorite bar in Athens. It's not your typical Athens/college bar, which is probably the main reason I like it so much. They offer a wide array of beers, liquor, and house specialty drinks. I would venture to say they probably have some of the best prices in downs for good drinks and good beer. I personally recommend the dark and stormy or Maker's Mark and Blenheim's Spicy Ginger Ale. One of the biggest perks of Manhattan is the popcorn machine. Get there early to guarantee yourself a bag, but it definitely makes for a good late-night snack.
Review Source:My favorite bar since 2004. Â Now, I have not lived in Athens since 2006, but every city I visit or live in, I lust after a Manhattan-like spot to kick back and enjoy a few signature cocktails. This is not for you kids that dress up on game day or drive your jacked-up trucks around town with the confederate flag- please do us all a favor and head on over to general beauregards. But, if you like a great atmosphere (erotic string art, anyone?) and beautiful drinks, get yourself to Manhattan.
Review Source:Was flipping through some photos on the good ol' hard drive and remembered a good time I had here a few months ago. Ya gotta have their signature Blenheim's ginger ale + Maker's Mark. The vibe of this place is great. A tad divey & a li'l retro without being cliche. Just a cool spot, a place I'd love to do a photoshoot in. Check it out if in Athens.
Review Source:One of my favorite bars in Athens. It's usually more low key than most downtown establishments, especially on game nights. Good drinks, and relatively cheap. Try the Blenheim's spicy ginger ale with Maker's Mark!
It feels like a neighborhood bar rather than a frat bar, etc., and the people are always friendly and diverse, including locals, grad students, and some undergrads. A mish-mash of tables and torn-up booths but the bar's the place to sit. When it's warm there's some seating outside but it seems to almost always be filled with regulars. Free popcorn!
It's good for what it is, and that's a divey kind of bar with people who think they're the shit because they work there (and in general). I like it because they serve St. Germain, only place in town that does, actually. Probably the only reason I continue to go here. Inside's pretty cozy, they have a random assortment of seating options, as well as free popcorn.
Take this all with a grain of salt, because in the spirit of full disclosure, it's probably just the bitterness talking. I don't appreciate being made to feel like the door person is doing me a favor by letting me into their bar. A) Don't do me any favors if you think I'm a punk ass trying to use a fake; just tell me you think I'm a punk ass and to get out. And B) I'm not going to spend $10 of my money (that could be spent on books or food) just so that you don't have to do some simple math. My license does not expire until 2011 and that is when I will drag my happy ass into the DMV and get it updated. In the mean time, do not hassle me when I am using my real ID.
Sour experience aside, this ain't a bad place to rest your laurels for a bit.
No offense to those in college, but for those of us that are a little ways out of school the college bars are not a place to hang out. - due to the stereotypical college kids there.
Therefore, when i went to see some friends in Athens, I was a bit concerned about the nightlife post-Terrapin. I was SO happy that we went to this spot, which I vaguely remembered from about 4 years and many beers earlier. This place rocks! Great ambiance, furniture, beer selection, pricing and clientele. It is a very cool neighborhood/dive bar that I would definitely recommend to anyone going to Athens. And the students that do frequent the bar were all very cool.
Haven't eaten there, just wanted to say the bar itself is VERY cool.
Oh, yes, the Manhattan.
Now that I live in Manhattan, I miss the Manhattan. That was one cool, cozy bar. I spent my last few days of Athens at Manhattan, daydreaming about moving to Manhattan in a few days, wishing I could take the Manhattan with me.
Have I said the word Manhattan enough in this review?
Not hardly--this is how much I loved Manhattan bar!
God, how I miss you.
I spent many a college day/night in this bar, drinking my brain away.
I have not yet found a bar that made me more comfortable or served such exquisite (and random) cold, unfiltered sake. Mmmmmm...
Every night I went there, my friends and I would compare and contrast the lamps we would want to take home and we would laugh, and be happy.
Nope, not bitter at all.
Hands down, my favorite bar in Athens. Maybe my favorite bar anywhere. I love that you can get a warm mulled wine in the winter and a refreshing Mai Tai in the spring. I love that you never get the same glass twice. I love that they've left the illustrations on the chalkboard unchanged after all these years. I love, love, love you Manhattan Cafe, you are what every bar should strive to be.
