Love the outdoor seating that looks over the ocean. Love the cheap and delicious libations. Food is only mediocre but I don't usually go there for the food.
Usually has a band on the weekends. The one I most recently saw was really good and pretty amusing, they really got into it. Too loud inside but a good volume while sitting outside.
Our waitress was very nice and attentive as well.
Dear Marleys,
I love you. Â I reeeeally do.. I love the beachie feel I get each time I visit... (gives the same vibe as some of the spots we have visited in Florida and the Bahamas..ahhh... vacation..) Â I love that I can see the water and can squish my toes in sand whilst sipping a margarita on a sultry afternoon.. I love warming those same toes at the edge of one of your wonderful, smoky fire pits on a cool summer night..
Your burgers are fabulous.. and your salad with lobster meat is to die for..
But alas, my sweet Marley's, I worry about you... I worry if you will survive.. And I SO want you to survive..
Yet.. it seems to me, you have so far to going in understanding your customers.. And basic customer service.
Let's face it, a place like Marley's needs to capitalize, BIG-time, on every dry, warm day they get during these sweet (albeit too short) summer (and, if lucky) early Fall months. Â Yet, it seems to me that you haven't a care in the world.
Case in point..my husband and I have visited several times thus far this summer.. usually on a Saturday night (I must say we do so miss your Karaoke Sundays.. Â : / Â and have made some observations.
#1 - We thoroughly enjoy live music, but YOUR live music is too loud. Way, waaaaaaay too loud. We might not be in our 20's anymore, but we can barely stand being inside for more than a minute or two to use the restroom or order a drink at the bar before we need to run for cover for ear-relief.. Youch. Is that really necessary? Your establishment is not the size of Carnegie Hall, why the need for such ridiculously excessive volume? I have to be honest that when we have a hankerin' to stop by on Saturday night, but the weather was such that we would have no choice to remain inside, we have to decide against a Marley's visit, given the painfully disproportionate sound surroundings. I highly doubt you would lose those customers who come in exclusively FOR the live music were you to lower the volume to tolerable levels, but you definitely lose US occasionally for this and I have to wonder how many others you might also be losing for this issue.
#2 - as mentioned in #1 above, we have needed to go to the bar to order drinks, despite the fact that we are sitting at a patio table, seats on the sand or at a fire pit. For whatever reason, although there seems to be a presence of waitstaff wandering about, no one seems to have a clue to approach us to ask "How are you doing?" Nor do they seem to notice our almost empty glasses and ask "Would you like another?" My husband and I were there Sat. June 29. We had one drink (which my husband retrieved from the bar) and sat, for over an hour, and were not approached even once by anyone. No, wait.. I take that back. At the end of our hour+, some young man came by and, upon seeing our one empty glass and 2nd-almost-empty glass, proceeded to grab them, basically to clear the table, not to ask if we would like more. I am not advocating for hard-sell pushiness where waiters/waiters hover around you every other second trying to increase their tab - that is just obnoxious... But SOME semblance of customer attention would have been nice. Don't these people want/need tips? Or are they just in a hurry to be done with their night?
Anyway.. I still love you, Marley's, I do...I just hope you might be able to be a little more attentive to my needs.. If so, think we can look forward to a long, mutually happy relationship.
Gave these guys another try because I heard they were on Bar Rescue. Haven't seen the episode yet but it doesn't look like much got rescued. Wasn't planning on ordering any food we just went for drinks but we wanted to check out the menu to see if it was changed at all because it was pretty small and boring when it was Marley's (Oh yeah they changed the name to Michelle's Beach Club and put a really ugly new awning up). The menu still says Marley's on it though and the bartender informed me that they were out of 90% of the menu... which was only about 10 items so figure that out. He actually pointed to the couple next to us and what they were eating and said that's it, that's what we got.
Oh well.
Go by for a beer on the beach, maybe someone will have gone shopping by then and you can order some chicken fingers.
Been here many times. Â And anyone who has been here before will agree.
Things I like most about Marleys:
Being able to sit in the sand
Enjoying their refreshing drink on a hot summer day
Being able to bring my dogs
Pleasant Waitstaff/Bartendars
Food
Is inconsistent some times really good, some times mediocre -- never terrible.
Service
The staff is friendly and pleasant, but this is not a place to grab a bite if your ever in a hurry. Food takes forever to come out. Â The timing of food is terrible. Â Appetizers being served with your meal, is not acceptable. Â They are called appetizers not sides or desserts.
Entertainment
always a good mix of music and fun.
Another bad point is the outside bar has no credit card machine so you can't run a tab. Hopefully this summer they'll change that.
Met some friends here on Saturday for a little lunch & drinks. Â What a great spot! Â We had a nice table outside which looked out at the water - didn't feel like RI at all.
The drinks were quite tasty as evidenced by how many the 8 of us drank. Â Lava Flow, Melon something, Grape Soda, Sangria etc etc etc. Â All were delicious.
We all split some nachos which were very good.
I had the buffalo tenders for lunch - they were beer battered which I had never seen before but they were awesome! Â The batter had a crunch still and the sauce (buffalo mild) was quite good. Â Normally I go something higher than mild but the 90 degree temps ruled that out. ;)
One friend got the fish and chips and the fish was the biggest portion I have ever seen. Â It looked like a turkey leg on steroids. Â He said it was quite tasty.
Other people got chowder, burgers, and I think my allegedly gluten phobic friend got a spinach salad which was pretty good.
Service was great and it really was a nice time. Â Not my typical hood but if I was back in the area I would definitely stop in.
My fiance and I went here for lunch on a Sunday. Â It was nice to be able to sit outside, but the "beach" there was not very nice. Â The food was mediocre. Â I just had a salad and a cup of chowder, which was standard. Â My fiance ordered a burger that was supposed to come with guacamole and chipotle mayo, neither of which was on the burger that he recieved...we didn't care enough to say anything. Â His french fries were a weird orange color that I've never seen on a french fry before.
The worst part was that people could smoke anywhere in the outdoor dining area. Â
We definitely won't be coming back.
I don't often go to the OB, but now that I've found Marley's things might change!
I went on Friday to see a friend's band play the bar. It was clean, had a great selection of beers, and overlooks the beach with plenty of outdoor seating. The space, though small, lent itself well to the 5 piece band, all the equipment, etc without feeling cramped at all.
All in all, this is a solid place - I can't wait to go when the weather is a bit warmer to enjoy the tiki bar outside. : )
This place was EMPTY but it was 6pm on a weeknight. The food was pretty tasty i got the turkey burger with a side of potato wedges instead of fries. The food tasted good but there were only 4 wedges :( There was a acoustic musician setting up so there is live music. I was sad that they didn't have unsweetened ice tea. Only sweetened. Â Prices were reasonable but portions were not that generous. The staff were really nice + even told us about upcoming events. They have karaoke on the beach + an 80's party coming up!!
If you want a lil caribbean beach feel right in Rhode Island this is your kinda place.
I grew up in Warwick and the Oakland Beach community had certain stigmas during my many years there.
But during my most recent visit (the first in many many years) I was pleasantly surprised by the recent renovations to the area. There are new restaurants, the beach has been cleaned up and the art festival on Tuesday nights is a hit (so I've heard).
Marley's... The sign outside sold us for dinner. It gave 9 reasons to drink at Marley's bar. SOLD!
Dinner was okay. I wish they used fresh turkey patties and not frozen ones because the chipotle mayo, guacamole dressing and pepperjack cheese were delicious together. The fries were above average.
Staff was very friendly, welcomed us and informed us of future events at Marley's. I just wish more people were there. We were the ONLY customers from 6:15 to 7:30 on a Tuesday night. Â A band was in the process of setting up so maybe the crowd is bigger later????
I used to really like Marleys which is also now called St. Michelle's temporarily and sometimes called Marley's Beach Party in an effort to get the name Marleys back. You see, this is a local place ON Oakland Beach sort of...meaning it is a big airy restaurant next to Iggy's on Oakland Beach that has a back patio with a separate little Tiki Bar and a long length of sand, amazing friggin view of the ocean and you feel like you're at the beac partying. On Sundays in the summer there is a guy who sings beach like songs who is very entertaining and frankly, all summer, sticking your toes in the sand while enjoying the breeze and a drink is a great experience; the local alone is worth you gas and your time to check out this place. Do go for that!!!! Now the bummer:
Marleys made the mistake of brining in Bar Rescue this summer of 2013. That idiot Jon from that show is a complete incompetent when it came to fixing Marleys. I won't go into why and hows but I've seen the food quality go down and I've seen the new wait staff (overstaff young people just standing around) quality go down. The drinks are meh, okay but here is how bad the food is and why doesn't the owner care? Who knows.
The wings are greasy and gross and come out on a wilted lettuce leaf with yellowish, old bits of blue cheese crumbs thrown around the plate: what?! The fried pub food like Jalapeno Popper, Fried Zuccini, etc...are old and freezer burned and accompanied with mix matched sauces you don't see anywhere else. It's like the cook is in the back mixing up dastardbly mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup recipes as a mad scientist to serve with each fried dish: it's gross. Usually, you'd get a sweet and spicy chili sauce with coconut shrimp: not there. Instead you get some mayo-mustard-ketchup, with hot suace added sauce. The shrimp were frozen, old and hard as hell after frying. I'm telling you it's a tastebud assault. The nachos, ahhhh, how can you screw this up? Here's how: you use 7 Eleven chain store type cheese whiz that comes out of that machine for their hotdogs and nachos? And that same type sweet, gross chilii? That's the same type they use at Marleys now on their nachos. Then to add more insult to injury, they add stale chips in various colors (yep, I mean they're chewy and the tips are crunchy UGH), and small bits of processed precut and frozen chicken breast bits, they TOSS all over the 7 Eleven store type machine chili-can you say disgusting? Then they charge you 11 bucks for it!!!!! I am so tired of going there now and grossing myself out on their food and the fact that when you ask for a fun sun drink that's on their menu they don't have the basics to make it!!! For a friend of mine, they didn't have any seltzer water for her vodka-that's a basic people!!!!! And no one including the owner who walks around like a mindless zombie, would go down the street to teh store to get some. One day, they didn't have any mint for their mojito drinks so they served it iwthout and kept it on the menu-again, really!!!!!!???????? You can grow mint for God's sake or take it off the menu! I love this place for a cold beer and to take my dog with me after a beach walk. I love the locals tho that crowd's gotten sketchier too lately than the previous summers of the general mix of anything from 20-60's. It's still a very welcoming crowd and an easy going time outside so try it out for the sand, sun and tiki bar, you'll love it.
Don't expect much on the food scene: maybe the burgers are okay still, I'm afraid to be dissapointed yet by ordering one. It's really taken a beating as a restaurant and bar. Breaks my heart because it's a great location with great potential just plain incompetent and bad management. Oh and because Iggy's owns the restaurant: there is NO takeout...how rediculous.
I found Marley's on a trip to Iggy's (It is right next door). The line was too long for Iggy's and my boyfriend did not want to wait, so he dragged me into Marley's. What a great surprise! It is in the perfect location, right on the beach.
There were a handful of people inside, but we asked to sit on the patio in the back, which was quite cute!
The food is good, the drink menu is fun and the outdoor seating area with live music is a lot of fun.
My boyfriend had the chowder and clam cakes, and said they were great, so if you do not feel like waiting for Iggy's, Marley's is a great little spot!
One needs to make the distinction first that this is the new Marley's with new owners -- the remarks earlier than the end of summer do not match with the quality found after the reopening.
The food is always good -- although the menu has been growing quickly and I have not had everything. I think the pulled pork is one of the best dishes, although the nachos are quite good. They always have weekly specials. Although I have never had it from what I can tell the kids menu seems to be quite reasonably priced -- something like 5 dollars for a full child's meal and a dessert. What a deal. Good deals on brunch too. Â The people are very nice there -- more than accommodating. The space is large and the outside will be awesome in the summer.
There is a pool table, tvs, high tops, reg tables, and a long bar. Bathrooms are always clean and there is a unisex one for overflow. On the weekends there is normally a small fire pit lit outside -- I dont smoke but its quite a nice deal -- I will occasionally go outside just to hang by the fire. There is normally a live band or live music -- and recently they will be having comedy acts.
Overall -- from my experience-- its a great place to drink on the Friday/Weekend scene. Cheap/Fairly priced drinks along with some great craft selections, large open areas, live music, pool tables, food, an outside smokers area, and a great staff pull together a great restaurant/bar ----- a place quickly being known as one of the hot spots in Warwick.
Each person has their own tastes but I would recommend checking it out at least. http://Restaurant.com offers gift certificates for cheap that might take the risk out of trying a new place -- its worth the try...I have never been sorry.
I love the set up of Marley's esp. the outdoor bar. Pretty decent staff from what I have seen. I personally think the food is a bit over priced for what you get. This place can draw a crowd but often is fairly empty. I love that they have live bands play but should get better bands.
PS = MB from Wakefield, Welcome to Oakland Beach it is an odd but great spot.
Seriously we gave this place a shot because it LOOKS fun. We waited over an hour for food has terrible service. The customers are allowed to smoke in the tiki bar area (eww). The drinks were watered down and the bill wasnt pretty in the end we said NEVER AGAIN! GO 2 doors down in either directions to Top of the Bay or Carousel Grille!!
Review Source:Lounging around Marley's for three hours is my idea of the perfect day. The setting is amazing. It is directly on a beautiful beach (you can feel the sand between your toes) and there is an actual tiki bar. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and the crowd was about as absurd as a crowd sitting around a tiki bar in Rhode Island in the middle of the day should be. I had the kickin' chicken sandwich and the spicy roasted peppers made sure it was kickin! It took a really long time to come out but was totally worth the wait. Marley's seems to specialize in endless platters (I saw endless platters of nachos, buffalo wings, you name it) I also had something like a Mai tai which was delicious. Our waiter was incredibly sweet about us hanging around for three hours.
Weird things about Marley's:
-They had recently broken every single one of their daiquiri glasses?
-They were not offering dessert on that particular day?
-The hostess warned me that "if I wanted to survive" I would not go into the women's bathroom. I am not sure what this is about, but as much as I liked Marleys I did not want it to be my final destination, so I took her advice.
All of these oddities only added to the quirky, beach bum charm that is Marley's!
brief review here- Â odd place, odd area, odd people! Â we went & enjoyed the little beach area to try & catch some sun, and wound up stayin g the day!! Â this place has fairly inexpesnive food, and an outdoor hut to get drinks, food, etc. Â the waitres was kind of a cool chick- and she knew how to make excellent margaritas!! Â the peop,e at the outdoor hut bar were weirdos! Â seemed like local alc'ies, and a few visiting alc'ies too! Â they have $1 oysters- Â which were huge and good, but served warm which was a problem for my girlf. Â we got shrimp cocktial- whuich was really good- Â esp at 6 bucks! Â we tried lobster bisque- Â it was very good and huge portion!!!! Â for just 8 bucks! Â we got sumthin else too later on, but dont remember what it was bc we were blasted from too many margaritas!!! Â so...cool place, nice view, weird/loser clientele, good waitress, great margaritas, inexpensive good food! Â dont know when ill be back in okland beach, but when i am- Â ill be at marleys for sure!!!!
Review Source:Marley's is easily one of my favorite ocean-side venues to visit in the summer. Â Having just recently opened its doors in this new location (a Marley's can be found on Thayer St. in Providence, RI as well), I decided to give this place a shot. Â After laying out on Oakland Beach to get my tan on, the idea of purchasing a tasty beverage lingered on my lips. Â In I walked to Marley's On The Beach. . . and what a pleasant surprise it was!
I found myself sitting at an outdoor Tiki bar, with the grass thatched roof faintly rustling in the wind blowing off the ocean, soft sand filling the premises, a multi-tabled patio behind me, a acoustic guitarist strumming the like of Jimmy Buffett and the Beatles, and a cold glass of Blue Moon draft in my hand. Â Incredibly relaxing and beautiful. Â Honestly feels like one has been transported to a tropical island, without the cheesy fake-ness one can encounter at a backyard luau of sorts.
Our bartender was quick with drinks and extremely sociable. Â My brother who accompanied me on this trip, spoke in great length about the new restaurant and the changes they've made from the previous location. Â A round of free iced Rum Runners made their way around to all the patrons sitting at the bar. . . . a treat from our firend the bartender, under the premise that it was hot and he felt like testing out the blender :-P Â Can't get better than that! Â
Though I didn't try out the menu. . . I will definately be back to partake in what I hope to be, a delicious and mouth watering meal.
