After having driven for nine hours, I met friends that have recently moved to the area for dinner. The music was nice, but very loud. The food was fair to middling.
A younger gentleman in a chef's hat came to our table and rudely chastised me, asking that I keep my voice down. His manner was not in any way kind, nor apologetic. My friends were in shock and insisted that I was not loud at all. I was embarrassed for them as I was their guest. As a party of nine, I am abhorred by the lack of professionalism shown by the back of the house management. Our server, Derrick, however, was an exemplary example of the opposite.
From my experience, I have ascertained that on the weekend evenings, expect to enjoy your dinner in silence while fixated on the featured local performer.
Well, bad news. I heard the place was bought out by someone else. Â It went from the only place in town to eat to now just another not so good restaurant in Burnsville. They aren't using organic ingredients, like the previous owners, and their prices are super high. Get this, for lunch, I had a bagel, my husband had a BLT and a cup of soup, not a bowl. That alone was $5.50. The entire lunch was $25. Â Really? Â Sheezz, head to Asheville and go to Homegrown, where it's all organic, cup of soup is $2, and local craft beers are $2! Â I'm just going to move there because the food up here sucks and I hate shopping at Ingles.
Review Source:We experienced extraordinarily slow luncheon service. (I mean, does it really take over a half an hour to make two sandwiches and laddle up a cup of clam chowder?) The staff was friendly, however.
The sandwiches were okay, but the New England clam chowder was among the best I've ever had.
The filling in the cheese cake was scrumptuous, but the crust required a knife to cut.
We dined inside, but there is a lovely deck out back, and a small steam meanders underneath the restaurant.
We'll probably come back for Friday lunch, when, we're told, there is live music to offset the slow service.
We have a summer cabin near Burnsville, and we enjoy dining and shopping as locally as possible. Our first visits to Mary Jane's we had lasagna. Very, very good lasagna. When I looked at the MJ's website on this visit, the menu was different. Mainly salads and sandwiches for lunch, and pizza for dinner. There's also breakfast, offering southern diner standards.
Ownership of the cafe has also recently changed. Chef Kirk Bennet has moved from 8 years at the Chalet in Little Switzerland to operate MJ's. Mary Jane still is doing the baking, though I get the idea she's moving onto other ventures.
Our first meal at Mary Jane's was breakfast. My choice - eggs, sausage, hash browns, and a sausage and gravy biscuit. Everything was done well - over easy eggs were, indeed, over easy. Sausage was tasty as was the sausage gravy.
My partner opted for the sourdough waffle. Our server warmed the maple syrup and the waffle was delivered topped with walnuts and butter. Taste proved excellent.
We both so enjoyed the breakfast that we returned with friends for lunch. Meat loaf with a side salad  was the special, so that's what we all chose. I decided to start with a bowl of chili, which was large enough to share with my wife. She really enjoyed the chili, while I thought it was good, but not excellent (more in a moment). Our friends were also divided, but more so. E didn't care for his; C thought hers good.
The downfall was perhaps due to new and inexperienced staff. The meat loaf wasn't exactly a loaf, more like a bunch of meat loaf chunks. The taste was good, but the presentation pulled the dish down. This would have been much better if the dish was a slab of meat loaf finished on the grill. For the salads, organic local greens were a nice surprise.House made Ginger dressing was a bit of a disappointment - it was ginger. No soy sauce, no sesame, just ginger for flavor. The base was pink, not what I was expecting. Tastewise, this would be better with  some toasted sesame oil, soy sauce, and rice win vinegar in the mix. C had house made Ranch with her salad, and she pronounced it good.
The bread served at MJ's is baked in house, and I highly recommend the sourdough.
We're certainly heading back - MJ's is a dining gem in a town with few dining choices. But it IS small town south, and that's a good thing. If the weather's good, opt for dining on the outside deck. The area is beautifully landscaped.
We have a home in Little Switzerland and couldn't believe our good fortune when we drove over to Burnsville and found Mary Jane's!! It has everything......good food, great atmosphere, service and even music on the weekends. We LOVE everything about it and can hardly wait to get back to the mountains and see our friends at Mary Jane's!!!
Review Source:My wife and I have a 2nd home close to Burnsville. We have eaten there dozens of times- lunch and dinner- with and without entertainment. Mary Jane and her husband do an excellent job of preparing/serving wholesome meals. It is not cheap, but not outrageous either. I'm sorry some of you folks haven't been pleased, but our experiences have always been positive. Tomorrow night we have reservations for 4 of us and the music will be great- you should go !
It is a local business run by the couple and we prefer to do our business locally rather than with a chain- to the extent we are able.
Cheers !
The service was really slow. Â If not for that I'd give this restaurant 4 stars. Â
We stopped in this summer for a bite and some local music. Â A group called "Hot Duck Soup" was playing and it was as "small town" as you can get. Â I mean that "small town" comment as an awesome thing. Â People were dancing and talking and everybody knew everybody. Â It felt homey and warm. Â The music was old school jazz from the 30's and it was completely obscure. Â
If you are driving through you need to stop by for some food....but plan on staying a long time.
Great cozy small downtown business. Â Nicest staff around, great service and outstanding homemade food. Â As far as Nicholas and his "one star" review...never take reviews from a Florida resident too seriously. Â They live off of fried food and bad beer. Â He probably had never eaten anything with flavor before. Â Sorry it didn't taste like conch fritters and bud light nicholas. Â Next time stay at the beach. Â Â Mary Jane's Rocks.
Review Source:We stopped here on a visit to Burnsville... I'm so glad we choose this place for lunch! Â It's a quaint, small cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. Little bakery with wonderful desserts as well! For lunch they offer salads, wraps, and sandwiches. We had the soup of the day - oriental chicken- it was delicious. Everything is fresh and homemade. The bread is soft and so tasty! I got the curry chicken salad sandwich (half) with pasta salad. It was wonderful!! And soooo filling! My hubby had the Mountain Hog sandwich (whole) and it was also delicious!! The menu is not huge, but it's got a good amount of selections. I don't see how you can go wrong here for lunch! We came when it wasn't busy so service was prompt and friendly. I'd love to come back here!
