Wineries in CT. Who knew? My tendency is to compare them with Long Island wineries but that is unfair since the LI wineries have been around for a lot longer and produce different varieties due to the micro climate on the East End. Â This winery is set in the woods overloking a small valley where the grapes are grown. Outside patios and Adirondack chairs for enjoying your wine among the trees. The only thing preventing 4 stars here is the tasting menu. There was 1 choice only 8 wines for $14. They didn't offer a smaller menu for those of us who don't want 8 ounces of wine at 11 in the morning.
Review Source:This is one of my top 3 favorite vineyards on the trail. A beautiful new tasting room opened over the last year or so, and the atmosphere is really nice, both inside and outside, with lots of shady spots to sit, fun ornaments and statues, and artsy decor. There is frequently live music here as well.
The tasting is $14 for 8 wines, which is a little steep, but most of the wines are great...different from what you typically find at the rest of the wineries. The Rose is great, but we left with a bottle of the new Rendezvous, a Riesling blend good for summer, and the St. Croix, a sweet, semi-dry red.
I was sad to see the dessert wines weren't offered as part of the tasting or by the glass; they used to be, and they are delicious, but given the $35+ per bottle price, I'm not going to buy a bottle without sampling first. That, along with the high tasting price, are the only reasons this review isn't 5 stars!
I've visited 3 times and always had tastings with Paul, the owner, who is very knowledgeable about wine and always extremely nice. I'm sorry to hear other reports of bad service, but it's just never been my experience.
Very very much enjoyed this winery. Â Every single one of their wines - and I mean EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. - was incredible. Â We usually purchase a bottle to bring home and we had a very hard time deciding which one to buy! Â Hip atmosphere and cozy tasting room. Â We stopped in as a last stop on a Sunday of winery visits so we didn't have a whole lot of time to sit and enjoy but we have plans to return!
Review Source:I've been to several / most of the CT wineries as well as several outside of CT. Â I particularly like Maugle Sierra for the atmosphere and the friendliness of the owners. Â We started coming here when the tasting room was nothing but a small room in the basement of their home. Â Even then it was pretty cool. Â It was nicely decorated, cozy, and inviting. Â They have since done an incredible expansion and have one of the nicest, if not the nicest, tasting rooms in the state. Â Check out their website for pictures. Â The owners, Paul and Betty are the friendliest people you'll meet. Â It used to be just the two of them or sometimes just Paul manning the tasting bar. Â Now that they've expanded, they have others helping but Paul is usually still there and I'm sure Betty is not far. Â
It's a great place to bring a date for a casual wine tasting or to sit down and enjoy your company with a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers, very romantic. Â It's also just a fun spot to go with a few friends. Â The view from the outdoor deck, overlooking the vineyards and hills is beautiful. Â They have tables you can enjoy outside and in, and they have a big fireplace inside for when it's cold.
I'm a big fan of red wines and like the St Croix. Â It's an estate wine aged in oak barrels and it's very nice! Â Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're in the area. Â There are some other nice wineries in the area too if you want to make a day of it.
This place was absolutely gorgeous. The ambiance of both the wine tasting area and the outdoor vineyards was just lovely. When we went, a group of girls had decided to come here for a bachelorette  party. For any girls that are looking for a unique, classy but fun place to go for their bachelorette party, I would definitely recommend a winery tour. It's a great place to take some memorable pictures, relax, drink some wine, and also buy some unique gifts for friends and family members.
The reason why I gave this place three stars is because of the service. It's a shame that this beautiful vineyard has such a nasty staff member working on the premises. The person that waited on us was an absolute c***, b***h, blah. We rushed to the vineyard to make it to their last tasting at 5:30. As we walked in, the woman looks at her watch and goes, "Our last tasting is at 5:30, it's 5:31, we are no longer doing our tastings." WHAT??! OMG, did you hear the words coming out of your mouth? I can understand if it was 5:33 but seriously, it was a minute after your 5:30 cutoff. I can also understand if there was no else around and if you had already started cleaning up the tasting area. However there were still several people in the middle of a tasting. I guess our jaws must have dropped onto the floor because after a few minutes, the woman begins to do the tasting without even really asking us again if we wanted to do one. Throughout the whole tasting, she was incredibly fake and tried to pretend as if she hadn't just snubbed us. We finished the tasting in 10 mins and rushed out of the tasting room because we were completely done with her rudeness. The guy that was working with her seemed a little nicer and more pleasant. I definitely wish he had served us instead of that byatch. Also, when we were done with our tasting, there was still a group of girls that was trying their second to last wine. Our group of three was definitely not the ones holding her back from making it out by 6.
I would recommend a wine but I literally chugged all of the tastings that I couldn't really distinguish any of them. The woman that served us really need to get her act together and realize that her attitude is poor for business.
Great spot. The St. Croix is fantastic. I've written about this place a few times in my Stefcations blog, but here's an excerpt: Maugle Sierra's strongpoint, in my mind anyway, is the St. Croix. Love, love, love. It's jammy and nummy without being sweet. My only problem with this wine is that when we bring our bottles of it back home, we find that we need to store it vertically; if we've got it rested horizontally on the wine rack, these babies inevitably leak. Not sure what's going on there, and we've mentioned it to the vineyard's owner, but no dice. You've been warned. But honestly, it's so good we don't really care how we store it, as long as it gets home with us.
Review Source:A beautiful estate with a great room overlooking the vineyards. Â Excellent tasting room with fireplace. Â Large Sliders to enter covered mezzanine. Â A StCroix wine with excellent cranberry and blackberry accents, wonderfully complex and a StCroix blended with Merlo that has a warm wonderful finish. Â I love my reds. Â Whites aren't bad either. Â Love the local feel. Â Do yourself a favor and visit, you won't regret it!
Review Source:The venue is great. It has a classy feel to it. The picture of the room on their website is a pretty accurate depiction of the room. Â The staff was really friendly. There's live music on fridays. The rolling tomatoes served pizza directly outside the tasting room. Their pizza is ok, but it's just a bonus. The wine is good. This is definitely a great place to go on a date or as a group.
Review Source:This is one of the worst run wineries I have patroned. If you are going to serve sub-par wine, at least offer me good service and cute atmosphere for a road trip picnic.
The proprietors and employees running the establishment were rude and pretentious and did not even explain to us the wines we were given. What the hell is the purpose of a wine tasting if you don't know what you are tasting? We weren't given a menu until three tastes into the presentation and after each pour, we were told what the wine was, then the employee would walk away. No one was available to answer any questions about the winery, where wines were made, blah. blah. blah. I've have gotten more education from a trip to Whole Foods.
This place is lovely, romantic, cute... offers glasses by the wine, but I left with a sour taste in my mouth. Literally. From the crappy wine and the crappy service. Wineries are supposed to be fun and educational... not here. There are much better wineries and vineyards in Connecticut (Justin C... don't laugh!)
Quick Tip: Wine tasting 6 wines for $10
We visited Maugle Sierra a couple years ago, and were shocked on our most recent visit by how beautiful the new tasting room is. It's extremely spacious and has tons of seating. Our tasting was conducted by a super knowledgeable and friendly woman, and was (I believe) $10 for seven samples, plus the glass. The wine was uniformly very good, particularly the two St. Croixs. Connecticut vineyards seem to produce much better white wines than reds, but the St. Croix grape grows well in this climate, and I wish more Connecticut vineyards grew it! Our group purchased a couple bottles of the Sunset White to drink out on the deck, which is huge and very comfortable. We eventually migrated to the lawn below, where there are even more tables.
We're really looking forward to our next visit.
This winery offers a tasting of 6 wines (3 white and 3 red). My wife loved 2 of the whites. I liked 2 of the 3 red. One was really good and I will be buying a bottle and my wife will be getting two bottles. The tastin room is very nice and cozy. Come here if you are visiting mohegan sun and need something to do after you are out of money.
Review Source:So the wines aren't that great and inside is very small but there is seating outside and it is nice to buy a bottle of wine and bring snacks to just chill.  We went for a tasting as the first stop during a bachelorette party and when we bought a bottle of wine and asked them to borrow a plate for cheese we brought they were really nice and even gave us a cheese knife for it too.  Also, you get to keep the glass after the tasting.  We hung out here for about an hour after the tasting and it was really nice.  The tasting itself was nothing remarkable.  We all agreed that we liked the Rosé the best so that is what we bought a bottle of to enjoy after the tasting.  Some of the wines were just flat out not good so if it weren't for the $8 price tag I would regret doing the tasting.
Review Source:Maugle Sierra is one of the hidden gems on the Connecticut Wine Trail. The common perception is that it's not possible to raise red wine grapes in Connecticut, that only white wines and sweeter wines do well. This obviously isn't true, because Maugle Sierra has a variety named St Croix, which makes incredibly complex, big red wines.
The winery is very much tucked away, no rolling expanses of vineyards, but nice cozy, shady areas to enjoy a picnic and some wine. The tasting room is under the main house in the back, adjacent to the cellars. I've been there several times, and each time the winemaker himself is conducting the tastings. Ask him anything, he's eager to answer your questions.
The wines are outstanding, as I've said. The reason is that they're unique, not like how one Cabernet Franc is different from another, but different in that these St Croix grapes lend a new dimension to the wines. If you're burnt out on tasting the same ol' same ol' styles of wines, Maugle Sierra has some that will peak your interest.
Negatives? Not many. Price would be the biggest concern, but they are a very small winery, and not widely distributed at all, so it's understandable.
