I am sure this place is great for the old crowd, but nothing interesting at the least outside of that. I walked in with my wife, saw there was no pool table like they had said, watched the nastiest old guy do some questionable stuff, walked out never to return. Best of luck if you plan on trying it out.
Review Source:How have we missed this place in past visits to Marin? Â Thanks to Yelp, we have now discovered a gem of a bar that has apparently been here for about forty years! Â We went into The Mayflower on a Saturday night around 10:30 pm, and there were maybe thirty people in there. Â Most were over thirty, but the younger ones in there were calm. Â First of all, the beer selection is pretty outstanding! Â Aside from what you would expect in a British pub, several unique beers I had never heard of were available. Â As the evening went on, the place filled up, but it was really a great crowd. Â
I must say, we had the best customer service we have ever had anywhere in Marin. Â Bartenders were friendly, attentive, and informative. Â They interacted positively with all the patrons, and honestly, service people in Marin usually act like I am bothering them when I shop, eat, and drink. Â This was a nice change, and we will definitely return soon!
The Mayflower has been around almost as long as me... That being said, it has been a long time fave of mine for so many reasons. I am saddened to read some of the previous reviews that generated bad press, but when  bartender takes off her reading glasses so I can read the menu, I ma all in for going the extra mile in terms of service.
I've been there since high school. I love that this one thing is still so much the same. I can play pool or watch a dart tournament. Yes, it can be a bit cramped for these things, but the Celtic music Tuesday nites and the fish and chips make it worth the small things that can make it seem crowded.
People are friendly here. the selections as far as food and drinks are excellent.. I love the burgers and fries, too. socializing during a game during this poor Giant's season can be a bit loud, but hey, I love my G men.,
Mayflower Pub, you may not be for some, but you are a taste of home to me..
To the owner: because you have bitchy and rude people tending your bar and serving your food, you have missed out on $500-600 per month by losing us as your customers. Just thought you might want to know that. (Not all of your servers are this way. Some of them are great.)
Moving here this past May, my fiancé and I had made this 'our' go-to bar.
But...no more.
Both of us, having worked extensively in the hospitality industry, know VERY WELL what good service means. It means being nice to people. Being fun. Having a good personality. And in the bar business, generally being a cool person, someone who greets you with a genuine smile and if they can't serve a certain type of drink (a Mai Thai because of 'house rules') they'll find a way to make you an alternative. And they'll do it happily.
Not this girl. She clearly has some agenda. She has been outrightly rude to us on several occasions now and that's why we are posting this. And by the way, important to note: we haven't been drunk or obnoxious. I just asked for the wrong drink and was treated like a leper. Awesome. A leper in a cool dress with money to burn.
Oh well. Was nice knowing you Mayflower.
Yeah, I've got to back my girl up on this. Â And you might be surprised, I wasn't always in her corner.
She challenges people. Â She can be combative at times when she knows she is right.. Â So when we went to the Mayflower about two weeks ago and she ordered a Mai Tai and was rebuffed by the blonde bartender with the arrow tatoos on the back of her arms, I told her to take it easy.
"The other girl made one for me," she said.
"I know," I replied, "but apparently they don't normally make them here, so take it in stride." Â We left the bar without ordering a drink. Â
But the truth was, the bartender was really rude about the whole thing. Â She was short, dismissive and curt. Â But I wanted to give her a pass. Â I LOVE the Mayflower. Â Its our most local watering hole. Â And its great. Â I didn't want to rock the boat. Â So I reminded my sweetheart, "We have to drink here."
She was a little pissed at me, but ultimately she agreed that we should let the matter pass. Â We're good people, and would never strive to be bad customers. Â We tip twenty five percent for good service, and worked in the hospitality industry for many years.
Then came today. Â We go in, and there's our Negative Nellie bartender.
"Hey, how ya doin?" I inquired, very pleasantly. Â I was eager to reestablish good relations.
We ordered two shots. Â In addition, I ordered a beer and my girl a rum and coke. Â We took down the shots and started in on our backers. Â In all honesty, we were pretty hung over from the previous nights festivities, so we really needed some fuel to get us out of the doldrums. Â
About half way through our drinks, I ordered another two shots. Â Our bartender informed me, "You're only half way through your drinks, and we don't like people getting wasted in here."
Excuse me? I thought. Â Are you joking? Â These were our first drinks of the day. Â It is simply impossible for me to describe the feeling that cascaded through my body as I absorbed the insult from this petulant woman. Â I'm a drinker. Â I know what getting wasted is. Â And we hadn't even gotten started. Â But the truth is: her comments had nothing to do with our very polite and decent behavior in the Mayflower on this day. Â It had something to do with her agenda, her bitterness at something else that she took out on us. Â And frankly, I felt insulted and hurt. Â We paid something like forty bucks for this experience, and I still gave her an eight dollar tip. Â As far as I'm concerned, she should have paid us for the terrible experience we endured. Â
I haven't written a negative Yelp review in over five years. Â And I really REALLY love the Mayflower. Â But I will not stand for being treated this way by anybody. Â I don't know what to do. Â Go back: or avoid this place forever. Â What a terrible shame. Â In all honesty, this young lady should not be working in the hospitality industry. Â She simply doesn't have it in her DNA.
I've been a frequent customer of the Mayflower. I enjoy going there in the afternoon to watch a soccer game and have a good beer. Even take the family there for dinner despite the mediocre food. Went to watch a game yesterday and the owner wouldn't accomodate a group of us who wanted to watch a game. 5 tv's and he couldn't switch the game to one so we could watch. Pathetic.
Won't return to his establishment again.
I would go in there more often if I could to watch soccer games but the daytime bartenders are soooooooo lame, they are rude and I'm sure they are the main reason why this place is always empty during the day!
You choose this industry so the least you can provide is friendly service to the patrons other wise go work at the DMV B...ch!
About 2 years ago I spent one of my first days out work celebrating here and getting to know my co-workers. As it turns out, I spent one of my last days of work with the same great group of people at the same place.
The Mayflower was very accepting of us descending upon on it midday and taking over their quiet bar. They were extremely quick to get us our foods and drinks, and to keep them coming.
In a great act of generosity the owner brought us a a sympathy gift of us, to keep us in good spirits. We couldn't have been surprised or happy about it.
thanks for taking care of us, Mayflower, for all of these years.
Will definitely be returning next time I'm in the area to wet my whistle.
I'm upgrading from my previous 2 star review. Â We went in during the 49er's playoffs. Â We were a little hesitant after our last visit, but wanted to give them another shot. Â Food and service was much better this time. Â We both ordered the fish and chips. Â They were crisp without being greasy and the fish was very fresh. Â Also, despite being very busy the waitress was attentive and helpful. Â We will be back.
Review Source:Pretty authentic for a pub. Â Can get busy and full on weekends and the bartender is pretty nice. Don't forget to play pool. You have too, just do it. Â Food is decent but would stick with the beer. Â Appetizer of Calamari is delicious but fish and chips were, eh...ok. Â Small portions though.
Like I said, stick with the BEER.
When I walked into the Mayflower it was very authentic of pubs I visited in the United Kingdom, nix the T.V.s  With wooden benches and even a sign that reads, "mind the step", there is a good variety of beers.  Wines, not so.
Four of us had the fish and chips as we prepared for  season 3 of "Downton Abbey" .  The crust on our fish was very crisp and the fish, perfect.  The fries were also very good.
Got to come back for some Iris music and a Guinness!
Cheerio!
Decent pub with the average fish & chips menu, not a huge variety to choose from. Â Divey bar atmosphere. Â The pool table is useful for passing time if waiting on another friend. Â The bartender was nice and friendly, she checked on my friend and I several times to ensure we didn't need anything else. Â The margaritas are good, my friend liked her beer (fellow Elite). Â Overall, it was a good place to chill after a long day of work and catch up on some football. Â Nothing compares to the Marina bars and restaurants in SF, but this will do!
Review Source:Tonight was our first visit to this pub. Or waitress was very nice and so was the at atmosphere. We could deal with being asked to move to accommodate the trivia night "reserved" tables.
When our food came, my wife asked the server if she had olive oil and vinegar (she can't eat dairy), and the server looked at her like she was an alien and was also rude. The worst thing about this place was the owner. He switched off the VP debates to the stupid baseball game even though we're the only people sitting in that area. Our waitress asked if he would switch it back on our behalf but she returned to our table looking embarrassed, since he said no without explanation. Who cares what the customer wants, right? Let's watch baseball like morons.
I give this place two stars instead of one since our (nice) waitress realized we had a sh*tty time and didn't feel very welcome--and believe me, we are very easygoing.
To bad this place didn't work out, we might have been regulars.
This is truly a hidden gem. I have walked past many times, during lunch, and never thought to venture in for food. Â I cannot count the amount of time spent on 4th street hungry with no way to sate it.
Low and behold, I stumble into this hidden food nirvana... the food here is amazing and it doesn't deserve the moniker of 'bar food'. Â For a lack of a better term this is the best bar food I have ever had.
I had the Southwest Chicken Club - on sourdough w/ pepperjack cheese, avocado, bacon & lettuce, served with fries, and it was the best serendipitous experience, with food, I have had in a while.
The lack of five-stardom comes from having not frequented this location enough to judge their consistency. Â I will update this review after several more visits.
One of the greatest compliments I can tag onto the Mayflower Pub is that I love the place and really have little to no interest in soccer (okay, 'football') and rarely drink beer!!! Many blokes there consider those two elements the bar's best features.
One aspect that fascinates me about the MF is the spectrum of customers the place attracts. Not only the afternoon vs. evening crews, but also the obvious differences in the different day-of-the-weekers to boot. Myself, I'm a late afternooner and enjoy my personal fave bartenders (Megs, Jo-Jo & Special K) and it's-still-light-outside 'regulars.' That's my sweet spot...I'm not much on Karaoke, Trivia and the night crowds.
I feel obliged to crow about the food, too. Take the Pub Salad...I eat out a lot and even the basic salad (without optional chicken or fish) is one of the best and most consistent salads I've had in the county. Fresh, crispy with a variety of greens. Fish n' chips? Badass. Better than what I ate at Terrapin Crossing for almost $19! Shepards or chicken pot in the 'pie' category? Get OUTTA here!
Bars can be a very subjective thang. IMHO what Tony has goin' on here has character AND is full of fun characters. A nice addition to the local fabric.
This is a great hangout pub for people to meet up after work. Â It's usually not *too* crowded and you can usually snag a table if you want. Â They have a pretty standard bar food menu, best of all are the fish 'n chips. Â Good selection of drinks, but no Anchor Steam! Â That's really unfortunate.
Karaoke on Friday nights is fun/painful, and because the layout of the bar is split into 2 rooms, you could be in the other room and not even know it's happening. Â Which is great if you don't want to hear bad music, bad if your name is on the list and you miss your name being called to sing bad music.
Mayflower is also very generous and helps some of my friends raise money for charity by hosting a bar event each year. Â Gotta love a place that gives back!
Their ONION RINGS are by far the best I've ever had. Their Bloody Marys on the other hand were so anemic, would need a serious transfusion to save those. The other offerings are likewise just .. meh.
It's a cool neighborhood hang out tho and the staff and folks that come here are pretty cool & friendly.
Go for beer or wine, get some onion rings, play some pool - can't go wrong there.
Heard great reviews of this place, visited, and didn't want to come back, until I gave it a try during lunch hour on St. Patty's Day.
Evening bar scene is typical of any bar you go to. Been to a lot of Irish pubs and was surprised and how the scene resembled every other bar scene unlike other pubs. Kind of made me question the irish character of the place. Decided to give it a shot on St. Patty's Day and learned that the place has a completely different day time atmosphere. Really enjoyed the menu. Had the beef stew and tried my dining companions fish and chips. Both were good! Very very good! Was a bit annoyed that the waitress couldn't list the beers on tap and kept insisting that we just order something...I gotta know my options before I make a decision.
The music on Tuesday nights is so great. It was sad to see that in the middle of a song one of the waitresses was telling the band to play happy birthday, which meant ending a song early to play it. That's always a bummer.
I wanted to order food at 9, but was told  food was not available. I had to search out for a waitress, though the place wasn't busy. Actually, the waitress with red hair walked by me twice as if i didn't exist. Seriously bad server issue with this waitress. The other waitresses seemed good though.
I will come back because they have live music , but hope to avoid the bad server for sure. Friendly place to be other than her, hope to try the food some day.
Great atmosphere and music. Nice crowd--young and diverse, just how I like it.
Cute bartenders--always a plus--and attentive. The tall one (I have settled on calling 6'4'' unannounced to him) is really sweet and from my home state so we have common ground every time I come in.
Women bartenders aren't so friendly, Â but hey, I'm know it's rough being hot and hit on every night by drunken fools....but don't get impatient while I'm thinking of what I want to make me feel good.
Drinks are strong, depending on who makes them. Flag down a man to mix you a drink and they'll be better.
Environment is fun, although kind of cliquey---twice I've meta semi decent person for conversation that isn't creepy---but there are still those who go over the line.
In conclusion--great casual place to meet people and grab a drink.
Everyone might have not known my name,, but I more than likely will be a regular from now on!
Awesome bar, haven't tried the food. Nice crowd on a Saturday night, mostly young people in their 20's-30's. The cocktails seem weak at first sip, but I can't complain -- those bad boys sneak up on you.
Inside decor is great. It's also nice to walk outside for some air in downtown San Rafael; 4th Street is beautiful at night. Cabs easy to contact if necessary. The Mayflower's a good chill spot to hang with friends. And a couple of the male bartenders are hot, which certainly doesn't hurt.
Ok, let me start by saying that if this had been the ac-tu-al "Mayflower", there is no way any drunk pilgrims would have made it to the New World.
Wow.
With the Super Bowl coming up, I was on the hunt for a great San Rafael pub to watch the game in. I've been disappointed by what Ive found previously and was excited to try this watering hole. It has received rave reviews from Yelpers and friends alike.
How sad.
With my girls in tow, we sauntered into this authentic pub in search of a great time and some tasty eats. A cute, cozy place with plenty of booths and tables.
For the Super bowl, we all expected this place to be packed...hmm not so much.
What we did find was a very mixed crowd of people... and not a good looking one to be found, yikes. lol There was the extremely rude pool douche, who hit me with his cue several times without acknowledging it and the obviously non-pit shaving hippie who was bare foot in a public place the whole time. Can you say "puke"?
Ok so it's not a happening sports bar, I can still live with that.
But like a steaming bowl of tasty dressing, this place had a lot of potential.
( Ya I've committed to this nauseating pilgrim theme, so if you're finding it annoying you may want to skip ahead lol)
I don't know how to be funny or fair or nice about this, so I'll just say, service was horrible. It was some of the worst I've had in a long time.
( 1 star). Paris Hilton recording an album, Aaron Rodgers being interviewed, George W giving a speech, Justin Beiber in any capacity, awful.
We sat at our table for several minutes and had to flag down our server to order. The entire pub had two bartenders, one of whom was also our server. At first she was fairly attentive, but I mean with ten patrons, it was to be expected.
As the night progressed it became obvious that she was drowning.
I completely get that SB Sunday will be busy, but it is Super Bowl Sunday limeys ! Staff your pub.
* Sigh* The British owners obviously don't get it and probably think football is a bizarre form of cricket.
Booooooooooze ! That is what will save this sinking ship !
Drink specials of $3 bottles beer and $4 pints made us happy.
The Bloody Mary I had was good, bordering on very good. ( 3 stars)
I didn't explore their beers on tap but they seem to offer a decent assortment.
I love pub food and that Mayflower has a decent menu.
For starters we had :
Onion rings ( 2 stars). I love onion rings, probably enough to play naked ring toss with them and a hot dude.
These were filthy greasy and hardly edible.
Hot wings ( 2 stars) Again, a personal fave app, but these were scorching hot and almost inedible.
Calimari ( 3 stars) Overall it was flavorful and the portion was good, a little soggy ?
Garden Burger ( 4 stars) it was very good although I am probably the only Marin-ite to order it with bacon, for shame !
I like the authentic British theme, although the irony of calling it the "Mayflower" was not lost on me.
If it hadn't been for the lack luster service and completely disorganized checks, I think we would have had a decent time here.
Because I love me some Brits, I'll give this joint a marginal 3 stars but like a tarnished buckle on a pilgrim hat, this place could use some polish.
Ya, I said it lol
This is one of those places that isn't just as comfortable as home, it's better. I have been coming here for a few years now, and the staff and regulars feel like an extended family.
I am trying to avoid using the theme song from Cheers in my review, so I'll just say it has gotten to the point that my Guinness starts getting poured before I can make it all the way from the door to the bar.
They have a great selection of British, Irish, and other imported beers on tap, and the pub food is tasty, filling, and very reasonably priced. There's a full bar for when the urge for some whiskey hits. They have a pretty serious pub quiz on Thursday nights that packs the house, and a pop culture version on Mondays which is much more mellow (and more my speed).
Tuesdays offer a spirited Irish Session, and for those without any good sense, Fridays offer Karaoke. The weekend nights get a little more crowded with the local college kids spending their parents money in the overpriced internet jukebox.
Overall, whether I'm just in briefly after a long day because I don't feel like cooking at home, or if I'm going to make a night of it, this is easily my favorite place to go.
Standard Pub Fare & Full Bar
Don't come here for the food it's just here to sop up the alcohol you will drink so you won't get a DUI driving home. Have a beer, bring some friends, and listen to some tunes on the Jukebox.
Came here the other night with some friends from college. Â Overall the place seemed pretty standard. Â Had the wings (they were okay) and their house salad (pretty big) along with a beer (really inexpensive - I'm used to NYC prices). Â The food was okay, nothing to write home about.
Seems like it was ultra quiet on the night that we went, but they have a trivia night, pool table, and uuber friendly staff so I'm sure there some fun to be had here. Unfortunately no Ginger Beer, but plenty of other Beers to choose from. Â Too bad I couldn't satisfy my craving for a dark and stormy.
Date Rating: 6
Pick up Scale: N/A (depends on the night of the week, but patrons seemed liked they would be open to conversation/friendly  in general.)
Strong Suggestion: Think English Pub. Â Put on a T-Shirt, Jeans and a Happy Face and park your bottom on a bar stool.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Having travelled and lived in the UK off and on for much of my life, I am well acquainted with pubs. I am fond of authentic pub culture, in that the bar is an extension of your living room. This is a far cry for the American bar, and you have to embrace the difference.
The Mayflower is awesome, and very "pubby." They've got a great selection of beers on tap, offering both your standard American brews and some other beers from across the pond. Love me some Boddington's.
A fire place, TVs everywhere with soccer and rugby games on, and some trivia thrown in as well. This is a great pub to come down to, order some pub grub and a beer, and watch the game with your mates.
A pub is a man's second best friend.
Nothing quite captures the essence of local culture quite like a pub, and the Mayflower holds up a mirror to San Rafael, which happens to get better looking after a few pints (and gorgeous by the end of the night). Â
[An update for pre-2009 reviews: The Mayflower now has a liquor license.]
What's most amusing about the Mayflower is that if you stuffed it full of investment bankers, you'd get them singing Irish tunes by closing time (Tuesdays). If the crowd were chock full of wives' clubs or moms' groups out for a night on the town, you'd have them dancing on tables (Saturdays). Â If you just want a beer and some quiet conversation or to catch the latest European soccer game on ESPN2, then wander in most any night after work. Â And when you mix together all of the above...? Â Trivia Night (Thursdays). Â
My three friends and I stopped in a year ago and stumbled across trivia night. Â The announcer/host stopped everything to get us involved in the game, which we weren't much in the mood for at the time. Â By the end, we were big fans, which had nothing at all to do with the fact that we walked away having won a consolation prize for one of the lowest scores that night. Â The questions aren't easy, and groups come to play to win. Â It's not for everyone, but it has to be tried (at least twice), so book ahead, go with a big group, and eat/drink/laugh throughout. Â Turns out there's a mini, pop-culture trivia on Mondays, which is much easier to do on a walk-in basis, but go on a Thursday for the full effect.
They serve (mostly) British pub grub: fish and chips, shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, etc., with a few oddities thrown in (calamari? not bad, actually). Â The Mayflower's food is a requisite accompaniment to your pint of Boddingtons or Guinness, which are both poured slowly and perfectly - as any real pub should. Â
This is your neighborhood pub, with a few twists. Â It has a full bar, spacious booths, a billiards table, multiple TVs, a dart board (somewhere, supposedly), and regular events nearly every night of the week. Â And best of all? Â It's a fantastic melting pot of San Rafael locals. Love us, or leave us.
I've never actually eaten here, but I can vouch for the competency of the bar staff. Having only spent a few hours (total) in this establishment, I feel that I'm usually one of only a few people there (one occasion stands out in contrast to this...but only one).
Further, I feel that the sea of empty tables is a bit awkward when whatever patrons exist are usually gathered near the bar itself or off in a corner singing karaoke.
At any rate, this is a place that does deserve some attention but could also use some loving investment before it realizes all the potential that it could bring to the dullness of San Rafael's nightlife.
Been here a bunch, but somehow this is the place I always end up getting wasted at. Maybe because I can actually eat AND drink all in one place = stay until they close and ask you to leave! Who knew there was somewhere in Marin where us vegans can stuff something down our face other than fries so we're not the first to make dart bets and end up stabbing some cute little family enjoying their shep pies in the temple. Granted it's a veggie burger with two teaspoons of avocado on it, but it's actually pretty decent (sans mayo and cheese).
Pool table, darts, giant tables for hours of drinking games. Very dark, pubby kinda place. Perfect. Celtic music sometimes. Rugby, soccer, and all the other real spots on the screens. Good, decent, dependable bar. And they've recently opened up to be a full bar, so when you're so full you can't drink one more sip of their heavy (but delicious) beers, have no fear - liquor is here!
My favorite kind of pub. Â Full of friendlies, food's good, they have my favorite beer on tap, and it doesn't feel weird to go there alone. Â Pop-culture trivia on Monday nights, real trivia on Thursdays (packed, get there early). Â Pool's not sharky.
Try the calamari. Â It's better than you think. Â Seriously.
Well I am bringing my review up one star.
Yesterday I was watching March Madness game MI State/Loui'ville.... all of a sudden I wanted Fish and Chips... so I called Mayflower and asked if they had the game on, they said yes... at 1/2 time left the house and sat at the bar ordered a beer and some fish and chips and watched the rest of the game... It was delightful. Hardly anybody was around and I had a very enjoyable lunch watching a game that I lost my bet in the pool... OH well.
The bartender was very nice and when I explained to her that I was now just starting to enjoy beer she gave me a few ample samples to try before I picked the one I liked. Â Which was above and beyond in my mind.
The fish was good, better than it has been in the past. I would go back. Also they now have a full liquor license.
There's no 'Inn' about it (unless you get so drunk that you end up sleeping on the floor), but a good ol' Brittish pub it is. Â
The staff is friendly (although sometimes tend to only chat with the regulars) and know how to pour a pint. Â The waitresses are all super friendly, which is good on a busy night. Â Pub Trivia on Thursday nights has this place packed! Â (word to the wise- reserve a table ahead or you'll be standing at the bar (if you can find room) but it makes for a fun and somewhat intelligence insulting night). Â Don't go expecting any fancy fru-fru drinks- no hard alcohol means that you're stuck with rice wine margaritas and let me assure you- the beer is better. :)
Food is decent as well- Fish and chips and chicken sandwich stand out- but the calamari is up there as well. HAven't had anything bad there yet (doesn't everything taste better with beer?).
Well worth a trip to the West End.
After a casual dinner at Mauna Loa Hawaiian BBQ, we headed to Mayflower for a drink. Unfortunately, the only cocktails available were soju cocktails (I think they only had a beer & wine permit) so I opted for a soju cosmopolitan which was okay but went down too fast and then a glass of red wine. The wine was pretty good and my bf enjoyed his Guiness. I have cut-back on my beer intake recently so decided not to sample one of the selections on tap.
The atmosphere was cool and old-school. The loved the older guys (slash old men) in the band playing some live tunes. Our high booth was really comfy and a good, quiet place to sit and chat. As I often complain about bars, it was a bit too bright/well-lit but no big deal...
The Mayflower is a pub. It's not a bar, it's not a lounge, it's not a club, it's not a restaurant. It's a pub. Once you've established that, you're looking at the best one in San Rafael, without a doubt. They have a decent selection of draught beers, complete with bar and wait staff who know how to pour them. (This is important, as anyone who's ordered a Guinness or Boddingtons, and get a glass of foam in return will tell you.) They don't hold a full liquor license, so if you're a mixed drink fan, you're outta luck. They do TRY to do mixed drinks, using rice wine but they... er, let's just say they leave a lot to be desired. The food's average, but again, it's a pub! Pool table near the door, jukebox playing, decent amount of big screens for watching footy.
As others have mentioned, there's the ubiquitous Thursday night trivia - if you're planning on attending, book a table well in advance, as it fills up quickly with teams of regulars who take pub trivia FAR too seriously. (Word of warning too, the questions are fiendishly hard, so be prepared to walk out afterwards feeling a lot dumber than when you walked in!)
Fab-u-lous!
This is not a bar, as in a nightclub bar; it's a pub with the exposed wood, proper selections of beer, and occasional live music. Â The clientle is really friendly and relaxed; the food is great, if you like bar food, and who doesn't like bar food? Â The fish and chips are my personal favorite, but the chicken club is reliable and there are people who swear by the bangers 'n mash. Â Added bonuses: quiz night (except that my team will annihilate yours...), SOLID jukebox selection, and a pool table.
Can you say "ideal pub experience"?
The food may deserve just 4 stars here, but it's the first proper pub my husband has been lucky enough to live beside since we moved to the US... and they do England proud on everything else.  There are Daily Mails and other tabs on the tables, the Quiz Nights are always very full (and quite hard, I may add), the beers on tap are all those that expats have been craving, on footie days, they fill to capacity (even have people standing outside the dutch door to watch sport!) yet the  watiresses make sure everyone is well stocked, and lastly... when PayPerView decides to eff with expats by forcing people to pay as if each customer was ordering payperview in each of their homes ($50 door covers???), a local expat will always bring in the tape to play the next morning.
I LOVE this place!
Thursday Night Trivia Challenge is my nemesis. Â Let me tell you why.
We went ready to annihilate. Â Storm the castle. Â Drop some knowledge. Â Pillage the farmhouses. Â Burn down the bridges. Â Rape the... well you get the picture. Â Basically, we were there to kick some arse and take some names. Â But, it didn't go quite to plan...
You may not be able to tell from my senseless rants and raves on Yelp, but I am actually what some people MIGHT consider intelligent, as are the wonderment of friends and lovers I collect. Â We kill Jeopardy! Â Cash Cab? Â We're all over it. Â Trivial Pursuit? Â Come on now. Â Child's play...
All of my training had been leading to one moment in time. Â I was sure that we would divide, conquer and split the bounty which we would easily win. Â That Thursday at the Mayflower Pub in downtown San Rafael, I was handed my ass, freshly spanked like a little boy who was caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar. Â
I don't know who came up with the questions, but Rachel's Rapscallions did not only lose Trivia Night, we lost hard. Â Bad. Â Painfully.
