My husband and I stopped for lunch today for the first time.  I had heard of the restaurant because of a booth they had set up at a local farmer's market.  We weren't really sure what to expect and the reviews on here didn't help me much.

There weren't very many people in the dining room (Monday lunch).  We found out that the only food option was the buffet...no menu available.  While not extensive, there were several food options including a salad bar and two soup choices (chili and chicken and dumplings).  There were also three options for dessert and all were tasty.  Between my husband and myself, we pretty much had at least a spoonful of everything and liked it all.  We were pleasantly surprised.  We didn't have a drink (had water) but the man next to us commented, "this is the best tea ever".

For the price, it was definitely worth the trip/experience!

Umm - ok yelpers, I'm not sure what happened with the other yelper's experiences, but I'm gonna try to help you with this place, as unbiasedly as I can.
Close your eyes, we are going on a journey.  Picture a Cracker Barrel, privately owned and operated with fresh ingredients and superb customer service.  It's not vegetarian friendlily we ARE Kentuckians, and the southern cooking I grew up with is still ingrained in our hearts and souls.
I don't normally eat chicken, let alone on the bone, so my daughter cut my chicken off for me and it was SOOO tender - the mash potatoes aren't easily disguised.  They are home cooked, not flakes.  The corn, was hard pressed to doctor from a can, but I suppose it was possible, but I still tasted the familiarity of freshly shucked corn off the cob and cast iron -pan fried corn.  I LOATHE green beans - this place actually got me to eat green beans, they were that good.  Even the desserts are obviously homemade.
This place was clean, simply decorated and it was so clean - even the bathroom didn't make you feel like you wanted to scrub yourself in bio-hazard suit.
Simply put - this place was simply good, simply sweet, and with one waitress/hybrid hostess between rushes, she was attentive and took time out to answer all my questions, even though they were a bit busy during an odd hour of the day.
The owners are or were Amish and wanted to offer the community - something unique and fresh.  I'm not sure about the unique part, as the food is apart of the staples of most southern diets, but fresh is definitely apart of their leg up on other restaurants of this genre.
As many "un-welcomes" we've received on the "sunnier side of Louisville," we really received a "down home welcome" here at Mike and Matt's and the food was just the toppings.  I'd not had a meal like this since the days of my gramma's Sunday dinners.
And folks, that's what you should expect, on just a tad bit larger scale. Not much variety, not much hoopla, and to me that's what's so great about it.

I just love it...I give it rave reviews. And I highly recommend it - if you don't go in expecting it to be chain, or a huge buffet trough like the chains, and keep your expectations on the quality, not quantity.  :-)  Because the quality is over the top...that's where you'll find the bells and whistles! Lol. :p

    OK, here goes....
We tried Our Best Restaurant when it was in that spot, and we were NOT fans at all!
Then we have been hearing mediocre word of mouth reviews for Mike and Matt's, like not so good service (possibly by teens) and food was only ok. I have been disappointed and stayed away.

Then I was dragged (begrudgingly) to the restaurant after church on Sunday, and they were not very busy, which to me is always a bad sign.

We ordered a roast beef manhattan and a fried chicken meal (wanted bone-in) with German potatoes.
The fried chicken was good, all pieces were hot, tender, and juicy, except one breast was slightly dry. The breading was tasty and crunchy.  The Greman potatoes were good. As for the roast beef manhattan, the meal was hot, the meat was savory and the gravy was good, but not the best. The mashed potatoes were real I think, but thin, which is not my favorite way personally (especially with gravy!). The bread basket was true fresh sliced bread, but I would rather have hot rolls (again just a personal preference).

The service was very good, friendly, and quick. The food came out quickly and hot. The other servers even checked on us, which always makes you feel taken care of.

The decor was country atmosphere, tables with chairs.

But I will have to say this trip was much better than my last few Cracker Barrel experiences, which were total failures!

I will return and I believe I will enjoy my meal.

I heard the meat loaf meal is good, but I was too scared to try. Maybe next time!

Prices were a little more than I thought they should be.

    Give it a try....

What is Amish food you may ask?  Well, at Mike and Matt's it appears to be a combination of classic American bar food like deep fried mozzarella sticks and nachos, served along side southern classics like meatloaf, pork chops, mashed potatos, and mac and cheese, and a few random things like gator bites and frog legs.  Is that Amish?  You're guess is as good as mine but a quick Google search says that Amish food leans more toward the Dutch and German so perhaps the "Amish" in Mike and Matt's is an inauthentic marketing scheme cooked up in their painfully slow kitchen.  Did I mention that their kitchen is painfully slow?  I ordered chicken, mac and cheese, and mashed potatos and my boyfriend ordered a porkchop, mashed potatos, and mac and cheese.  Then we waited and waited and waited and waited.  Our bread was refilled three times.  The waiter even brought us friendship bread to tie us over.  All the while we had to listen to an obnoxiously loud folk "band" singining in the dining room.   When our food finally came the waiter pre-emptively discounted our food  by 30% without our even saying a word because the wait had been so long.  But clearly the wait was so long because they were so busy overcooking our food and then letting it sit under a heat lamp until the mashed potatos and gravy developed a skin on them.  Both my chicken and his pork chop were so overcooked and dry that they were inedible and chalky.  They also had absolutely no seasoning whatsoever.  I would have sent it back but I couldn't stand the idea of waiting another hour and I simply didn't think they would produce anything better the second time around.  We literally left and went straight across the street to another restaurant because we were still so hungry.  Trust me when I say to skip this one.  I'm sure they will be out of business within a few months anyway.

Went to this restaurant with high expectations, was told it was an Amish style restaurant.  Lots of people which I thought was a good sign and only had to wait about 10 min.  Our waitress was very good...and that is where the good experience ended.  I ordered a beef Manhattan unlike any I have ever seen, the meat was in about 1/2 " cubes and so tough I had a problem cutting it even with the steak knife that I was provided with, the mashed potatoes (which I had been told were "real" not instant) were so loose that they just spread out across my plate and the gravy was (or tasted like) canned.  The fish that my husband ordered was probably the best item we had that night but pretty pricey. The creamy coleslaw was anything but creamy,,,true, it was white but it was watery and had no flavor. I saw a lot of people ordering the meatloaf which when delivered gave a very generous portion, what I didn't see was that anyone actually ate it...I wondered why until I heard they used both brown sugar and catsup it in and it was very sweet (this I cannot attest to personally since I did not try it...only an observation and comments by other diners)   The menu has frog legs, quail, and baked spaghetti..some unusual items for an Amish restaurant...   The cost of our meal was $27.00 (could have gone to Texas Roadhouse and had a good steak for this amount) .  My husband and I like to try new restaurant wherever we can...I can honestly say we've tried it, now we do not EVER have to go back.  So      sorry as it is a new restaurant only open about a month...Needs lots of work and new cooks...
