I gotta give Hall's some love. Â This cafeteria has been open for a long time (over 60 years if I am not mistaken) and it is rooted in Louisville history. Â It is located near old warehouses and butchers that have been around for decades and decades, and it feeds a lot of hungry, hard-working people. Â Hall's also caters for Churchill Downs, Kentucky Colonel events and just about every major affair in town, and I can understand why.
You cannot find anything like this place on the Left coast where I live. Â This is good, honest Southern cooking. Â You grab your tray, pick a meat, sides, bread, drink and sit down, shut up and eat. Â I have eaten here now twice on my last two trips. Â This last time I had a wonderful southern-fried steak with brown gravy, green beans (that I could have eaten two pounds of), navy beans and fried cornbread. Â I love that within two minutes of walking into Hall's I was eating a great southern meal, for just a few dollars.
Ladies, there is no white linen table cloth, or fancy decor, or flowers in a vase on the tables. Â This is a small, old little slice of history that is meant to be all business and no frills. Â For me, I love a place that is rooted in history, serves a quality local cuisine, for a great price. Â I cannot eat like this in Southern California, so this place is a real treat me for me when I go back to Louisville.
