We went to Milly's with a group of about 20 to hear a solo guitar player/singer. Â He was good. Â The food...have had much better. Â But the real kicker was the half price appetizers and $3 drafts from 4-7pm. Â We were there well before 7. Â Ordered beers and apps. Â When we got our bill we were charged full price for the apps! Â We asked why...you are going to love this...
HALF PRICED APPS ARE ALSO HALF SIZED!!! Â
Seriously! Â We asked why ours were full priced and the waitress said...again you won't believe this...
I HEARD YOU SAY YOU WERE GOING TO SHARE SO I ORDERED THE FULL SIZE APPS FOR YOU BECAUSE THE HALF PRICE APPS WOULD NOT BE BIG ENOUGH TO SHARE!!!
Really! Â She decided for us. Â We won't be back.
The beer is great. We were a little disappointed that they were out of quite a few of the beers we wanted, but there were plenty of choices remaining. We ordered several appetizers to share amongst our party of six: the loaded nachos with chicken, a combo plate, chicken wings, and the espinaca dip. They sprinkle their tortilla chips with the most amazing and delicious spice blend, and the nachos had plenty of chicken and fresh vegetables. My favorite was the espinaca...I am craving it today! Our waitress Lindsay was knowledgeable about the beers and food, and she kept our glasses full. She was also kind enough to bring us plenty of condiments to go with our apps.
Review Source:While Milly's is a good place to drink, I have to strongly recommend NOT eating there. The food is poorly seasoned and the menu is monotonous, not to mention a trend of over-seasoning everything to death. I had lunch before class, and made it about an hour into class being I "returned" my meal. If you need to eat there, stick to the fries or make sure it really is well done!
Review Source:The last time I got food here was over a year ago, I remember it was pretty good but nothing outstanding. Â What is outstanding is the music. Â If you lost the funk, you can definitely find it at Milly's on Tuesday nights. Â It's so much fun!
I've only had the pumpkin beer (shame on me) because I usually go when I'm craving pumpkin and it's not in season and it's the best pumpkin around. Â Even when all the seasonal pumpkin brews come around, nothing beats Milly's. Â I guess I will have to go back and try more of the beer...I'm not complaining.
It was a snowy night out and we had been turned down for bowling at some of the local places (league night, sadly). Â A group of us ended up at Milly's and it was just...flat.
First, we pulled some tables together for our group and the staff looked visibly annoyed. Â After we sat down it felt like forever before someone came over to talk to us. Â They had some winter cocktails which were intriguing but not very tasty. Â I ordered some marshmallow martini thing but opted to order a beer before finishing it. Â They were also out of several beers. Â I think I chose at least 3 different types to try before I found one they still had on tap. Â Thankfully I was able to grab some sips from my friend's, but it was still disappointing to not have a pint of my own. Â They were tasty beers!
The food is nothing spectacular. Â I guess it's standard bar food. Â Not really sure what I was expecting, but I think the fact they were out of almost all their beer and the food fell short made for a very 'meh' night.
Ech....I am a huge beer drinker. Â I find it funny when a person walks into a brewpub and ask for a bud light. Â Â I'd punch them...but that's just me. Â
But millys is the place for you, their beer is not very unique or hoppy, it's for someone who drinks crappy beer, to come and drink slightly less crappy microbrews. Â
A lot of people like his brews. Â He's a nice guy, and I like his pumpkin beers. Â But his IPA and all the others were just...so so.
It's way too busy and way too full of tools to really go to on weekends. Â Their food is weak pub food. Â The bartenders are kind of cocky people who are like "I WORK AT A BREWPUB". I've been all over the country and always find a brewpub no matter where I am. Â
But I'm locally from Manch area, and this is the worst brewpub around.
We were in Boston and since it's pricey there we figured we should head back to Milly's Tavern in Manchester. Â Collegues went there the night before and loved it since it had tons of microbrews on tap and good live entertainment. Â There wasn't entertainment when we got there and it was pretty sparse but tons of beer was promised...and to our surprised CHEAP microbrews as well. Â $1 a pint since football was on tv. Everyone in our group asked why we left New Hampshire in the first place. Â LOL. Â
Some of them started playing pool and towards the end of the night there was a dj blasting/mixing some good old school hip hop and random songs. Â It was random since there wasn't tons of people in this very large place but it's a good hangout. Â I was only in New Hampshire for work but I'd stop by here for a beer again.
Ok, I get that it's a brewery... but I don't drink beer and they have no other drink list? Â Seriously? Â The service was pretty horrible... waited about 10 minutes to be addressed by a waitress on a tuesday night... maybe 30 people in the place.... and then she was pretty surly to boot - lol. Â We had 2 waters and a beer and moved on out... 3 people who don't need to do that place again! Â The band was really good though... too bad the servers couldn't care less.
Review Source:Wide selection of their own beers on tap everyday. While many bars brew their own beer now they only tend to have 3 or 4 available at any time. Not Milly's. They almost always have at least 10 or so available including a cask and usually many more than that. Now none of their beers are going to blow you away with how good they are, but I have found them all to be very solid choices and no real nasty ones.
The menu is decidedly pub grub, but not in a bad way. I also like that it comes out quick and is not very expensive. This has become my goto place to hit up for lunch or dinner before I hop on flights at the Manchester airport. Needless to say much better than any of the options there.
My only real knock on this place is the service. Its very slow and they tend to just sit around and chat with each other or their friends who are regulars. They are always super friendly and helpful, but it can be annoying when you have to flag down the bartender if you need something that is not super obvious.
The three beers I had were delicious. APA, porter and cask stout. The bartender gets a negative ten on a scale to 100. He flat out ignored me when I tried to get his attention and order a beer. He was super busy talking to another employee and cleaning. Even when he was standing right in front of me he wouldn't acknowledge me as he was cleaning the bar.
The servers were nice. Though hid on a slow night. Had to get a mgr to order a beer, since the bartender didn't want to help customers and servers were no where to be found.
When we left the servers were all out front smoking. no wonder there were no servers inside helping the few customers. Looks crappy to have all these smokers hovering around the front door and even worse when it's the staff of the brewery.
On a good note, one of the best Nachos I have had. They cooked it really good and the jalapeños were fresh and not from a jar. Big bonus. :)
I really really like Milly's pumpkin brew. It's one of the best around. However, the service is lacking big time. We were empty glasses more than once and had to wait so long, our buzz went away. both times. Seriously and it wasn't even busy.
I have not tried the food.
I am not impressed with any of the other beers either. And the growlers are way overpriced.
I'm not a huge fan, but will make the trip again in the fall just for the pumpkin brew.
Stopped here on the way up to North Conway from Massachusetts for a late dinner.
First, the beer is pretty good. I had Hopzilla which if you like IPAs is very good. Second, the service is friendly if slow and a bit clueless. For example, we were given our food with by another server and had a grand total of zero napkins. A bit awkward. Finally, the food is truly awful. I'm generally pretty forgiving when it comes to brewpub food, but this was a whole story. The "pizza" we ordered appeared to be a pita bread with some slightly melted cheese on it. If the jalapeno poppers we ordered actually had jalapeno's in them they were well disguised. Everything seemed like ti had come directly out of the freezer, then into the microwave before being delivered to our table. Yikes.
Go here for a decent beer. Avoid the food.
Have only been here once so far for trivia night so I cannot say much about it yet.
First off, it is a rather large faulty with many different rooms and bars. We were led to a back room for trivia night that had its own bar, tables and DJ booth where the host was setting up. Overall, the trivia night was very fun and even included a mini pie eating contest as one of the rounds.
I do not drink beer but many of my friends do and ordered some of home brews. I don't know exactly which ones they had but they only had good things to say. I stuck with my usually cape cod which is always the same. Price was like your average bar during the week ($5-7).
We did order the "Brew" Chetta when we got hungry. It was a small portion (4 or 5 pieces) but it was excellent. It was their take on the classic bruschetta and it used one of their homemade brews in the recipe. It had a very slight beer flavor but it complimented the other flavor very nicely.
Overall, I'd return to this place to try out more of their menu.
However, I would not go here on weekend evenings. They pretty much turn into a night club for 18+ and charge a high cover price. However, it does make sense seeing as how they are in the milliard right near UNH Manchester.
I really enjoyed this place. Sat at the bar on a Monday afternoon, and enjoyed their HUGE selection of beers that they make their. They had at least 16 of their beers on tap- more than I think I have ever seen at a brewpub! They have a sampler pack that comes with 6 beers, so we got two sampler packs, and the bartender gave us two extra ones for no charge- sweet! So we tried 14 of their beers- very exciting. They were all decent to very good. None that were crazy interesting but none that were awful disgusting either.
Here they are from fave to least fave (scale of 1-5, 1 is very best beer ever, 5 is very worst ever)
Pumpkin ale: 2: Lots of pumpkin and cinnamon. Little bit wheaty. Not intense flavor but good and drinkable Would be great with sugar rim.
Red tail: 2: Very good. Made with some spices it tastes like cinnamon
Dark porter: 2: Really good flavor. Roasted.
Harvest ale: Â 2.25: Plain. But good wheaty fall flavors
Bo's scotch ale: 2.25: Also good. Scotchy flavor
Blueberry lambic: 2.5: Very sour, a little sweet cuz of bb. Pale straw color light bodies. Too sour to drink a pint
Chocolate porter: 2.5 Too much coffee bitterness. But good chocolate flavor subdued the coffeeness. Maybe good with dessert?
Hopilicious: 2.5 Hoppy. But good. Actually kinda good.
Raspberry lambic: 2.75 Even more sour than bb. Rasp don't make it sweet!
Mt uncanoonuc golden cream ale: 2.75 Golden color. Very light. Bitter wheat. Very bitter aftertaste. Interesting but not good
Burton ale: 2.75 Okay. Little bitter. Bitter aftertaste.
Hopzilla: 2.75 Crazy hops flavor. Tiny bit like cat pee
Oatmeal stout: 3 Too flat. Bitter.
Zeus Belgian wit: 3.5 Very light straw color. Weird orange soap aftertaste. Plain mouth taste.
For food, we started with the chicken fingers, glazed with golden BBQ sauce (they have like 7 sauces to choose from). They were very good, but I wish they had come with celery/carrots and a dipping sauce like others fingers usually do. For meals, I had the southwestern chicken salad- which was okay. It had tons of lettuce in a tortilla bowl, with some grilled chicken, and tomatoes, corn and black beans. I've had way better salads. It came with their buffalo ranch dressing which was WAY too spicy for me so I switched to the regular ranch. He had the french dip with sweet potato fries- a MUCH better entree. The fries were thin and crispy with a dusting of cinnamon sugar- EXACTLY how I like sweet potato fries!
The bar inside is huge, they have pool tables and dart boards and TVs. Service was prompt and friendly. Bathrooms are kinda disgusting. Bar area was clean. I will definitely love to come back and check out their seasonal beers!
We ordered a cup of chili, chicken Caesar salad and a steak tip wrap. Absolutely the worst service I have ever had. we were there for 2 hours (not by choice). Waited EASILY an hour to get our food and was only asked for refills 1 time in that span. The beer was piss warm and wasn't even that good tasting (tried the fisher cat ale and a hefenweizen). When our food finally DID arrive we got a chicken ceasar salad which was pretty good, chili which was the dryest chili i have ever had, and a steak tip sub (not a wrap) with a very skimpy amount of steak. after telling our waitress about the mistake she said she would bring it back and have them put it in a wrap and GRILL the wrap (by this time the steak was already cold). they put the cold, skimpy steak in a wrap, DID NOT grill it and then about 10 minutes later it finally came back out to us. Would not ever go back and recommend you do not waste your money or time. By the way, we (my wife and I) have been to milly's a handful of times and always left dissapointed. This, my friends will be our last visit.
Review Source:Ok so went there for lunch. They were out of ALL of their seasonal beers. ALL?! They had some good beers, served like they had been chilled for an hour, max. The food was blah. $8 for four "crab" stuffed mushrooms that had never seen crab. They were full of greasy, mushy crumbs, zero taste. The chili was ok, not great, the chicken quesadilla was decent (but how do you mess that up) and came with a teaspoon of salsa. It was mediocre at best. I would not go back and I would not recommend it.
Review Source:In town for business - I remembered this place from a previous trip to Manchester, but only after I RE-located it on http://beermapping.com. I was only here a year ago, and so it wasn't that memorable. But it was less than a mile down the street from my hotel, and on a dank and rainy night this seems like the best option for a quick dinner and few brews. Â
Sat at the bar alongside several other apparent business travelers and other solo dinner guests. Started with their Manch-Vegas IPA. Not too bad. They were referencing Stone IPA as a comparable style though, and it was no West Coast IPA. Not too strong or complex. Easy drinking. For dinner I was hoping for the "fresh haddock" fish & chips, but they were out of that, along with several other foods (and beers). It was a monday, so perhaps it was a busy weekend. I ended up with ribs 'cause the guy next to me had them and they looked pretty good. I love ribs, and although I should be pretty critical of them (especially with my travels in rib capitals like Memphis, KC, etc.) I tend to be pretty lenient for some reason. I like almost all ribs, I guess, I just remember some better than others. So these were nothing to remember. They were smoky, meaty and they did have a real tasty BBQ sauce. But they were also tough and tight to the bone. The cole slaw sucked. I wanted beans but 86 them also - I was given fries, which were okay. Also what probably killed my enjoyment of the ribs was round 2 on the beer - their "pub favorite" Amoskeag Harvest Ale. Yuck. Honestly, I think something was wrong with this batch. Stale, wet cardboard aroma and flavor. Maybe oxidized. Maybe a dirty glass, as there was no head retention whatosoever. The more I drank it the worse it tasted and smelled. Sorry - this was not good. But the price was right; both beers were only $2.50 each, and it was after happy hour when I arrived. Not sure if I was given happy hour prices, or if it's normally that cheap.
Aside from those disappointments, the service at the bar was fine. Atmosphere was good. A well lit, comfortable bar. Some regulars from the mug club. A moderately quiet crowd, but respectably busy for a Monday. Nearby UNH doesn't start for a couple more weeks, so once classes start things may be different. I'd go back when in town.
Stopped by Milly's Tavern on the way back to NJ from peakbagging in the White Mountains.
Really nice spot for a brewpub. They had nearly 16 different beers on tap and we had 2 samplers to try 12 different ones. Some of the lighter beers tasted 'off' like the beer lines have not been cleaned for some time. Hence, the better beers that stood out were the darker ones, not sure because they were better or the darker malts hid the skunky taste.
Foodwise, nothing special here on the menu as the food is typical bar food. However, a few items must be mentioned:
- Buffalo wings (Wicked Good Wings) are one of the best I have ever had, at least in NH. They are grilled and not fried. Had them with the hot garlic sauce and wished there were more than the 6 or 7 pieces they gave.
- The Southwestern Chicken Salad was typical but the Buffalo Ranch sauce was delicious. Probably very bad for you, but it looked homemade and was really good.
- The vegetarian options were poor and the quantity of food miserable. My GF wished there were more hummus on the Mediterranean Plate (perhaps olives?). It also did not help that her salad order was messed up and she got a small Greek Salad instead of the large she received. They were out of Feta and had to substitute the cheese - my GF picked Blue Cheese.
The service initially was OK but nosedived after the waitress apparently went home without telling anyone? We sat for a while w/o water and contemplating how to pay our bill. After progressing to the bar and waiting for nearly 5 minutes, we took on a more direct approach of finding someone that worked there to indicate that we wanted to pay the bill. They bartender (or another waitress) looked at us, printed a reciept, and asked if that was our bill. Are you serious? We were going to leave the usualy 20-25% tip, but ended up leaving more closer to 12%.
In summary, OK beer and food, BAD service. Not sure if we would come back here again.
Big fan of Milly's Tavern. Excellent beer and they always have 10-20 of their own brews on tap. Can't go wrong with any of them! Food is great too (4-5 star bar food, but it is still bar food).
The ONLY downside (which hasn't stopped me from going frequently) is the service. While very friendly, takes forever to get an order in, and beer fill-ups are infrequent. They need more staff.
All I can say is YYYYUUUUMMMM!!! Â I've been to Milly's on 2 occasions, last fall and this spring, and had the pumpkin spice beer both times. Â It is SO freakin' good. Â I actually bought a growler the first time I was there. Â I'm going to Hooksett for work this weekend, so I'm pretty sure that I'll end up at Milly's again on Sunday night!!!
Review Source:I really wanted to like Milly's but I don't think I can - their beer is ok, nothing to write home about; I've made better in my basement. Â Their IPA doesn't taste like an IPA should. Â Their food again is ok, nothing special. Â Biggest problem is service - wrong food order came out, slow to offer a refill on drinks; didn't seem to care we were there. Â That's why its 2 stars.
Review Source:I'm a huge fan of Milly's. While it's certainly not the best restaurant in town, the main appeal is the beer - they brew their own beer on premises and have an amazing selection.
I'd strongly suggest the Amoskeag Harvest Ale of the ManchVegas IPA. Some of my favorite beers in the region. Not all of their beers are stellar, both by my preferences OR by the standards for those beers, but the variety of the offerings will likely lead you to one you like.
On a Thursday night, this was great! Not many people but that's alright, we went there for the beers anyways.
Beer...so many! I only had 1 though, cause I had to drive back to the hotel. But it was great! I had something girly and fruity...forgot what it was. Very light and hungry making.
So my bf and I first ordered some dip. Apparently not that impressive, because I don't even remember what was in it.
BUT ...then I ordered the grilled pita with feta and spinach.
OOOOMMMMGGG!! The feta was piled on it and it was so good, I wanted to grab the plate and smear my face in it. I think there's olive oil with rosemary and parsley on the pita when they grill it? Either way, it's fantastic and made me foodgasm with every bite.
The bartender lady and the manager were very friendly and great to talk to.
...at least I think... I don't remember much before and after the grilled pita with spinach and feta really...
Some friends and I stopped by early on a Friday, well before there was any kind of crowd at Milly's. Even though it was vacant, we had a good meal and a good time.
Milly's is subterranean, and maintains the wood and brick motif of many of the renovated buildings along the river. We sat in a dining area next to the bar, where there were a few TVs to watch.
I ordered a blue cheese burger from their decent-sized menu, which is primarily made up of pub food. The burger was pretty good, but nothing too special. Meat, bun, and veggies were fresh. The onion rings I got on the side were great; they know the right onion size/texture/batter combo.
Milly's seems like a great option for an alternative to the chains, but it didn't wow me. The food was a good value for the price, and the decor was pleasant.
The biggest problem with Milly's is there are too many beers to try in a single visit! They have 16 of their own brews on tap. And every one deserves a taste. And there's something for everyone's tastes.
One of the best things about Milly's is that they make trying all those beers possible by offering half price drafts and appetizers Mon-Fri from 4-7 pm.
We've eaten there a number of times as well and the food has always been quite good. It's a typical pub menu with some unique offerings as well.
Milly's has live music regularly on the weekends. It tends toward the heavy metal, hard rock genres. So you might want to visit during the week or weekend days if that's not your thing.
Milly's has recently reopened after a flood. They have a new wood floor and sound system. More importantly, they have 16 great locally brewed beers and well made pub food.
Every weeknight/late afternoon is Happy Hour when their beer, which is normally around $4, is half price and so are apps. I recommend their grilled wings, sweet potato fries and beef stew.
Went on a Saturday afternoon around 5pm for some drinks after a conference with a group. We sat in the back, behind the bar.
Took forever to get the bartenders attention to get a drink. Our group was completely ignored throughout the night. Had to walk up to the bar to order food, no one ever checked on us. 3 of us ordered food, the other two people were finished eating before I even got my sandwich, which looked like it had been sitting under a heat lamp, and the order was screwed up. The "millys famous" chicken tender sandwich was definitely nothing special. I think the "cajun" fries were only flavored with salt and pepper. Even more annoying was the other food looked pretty good.
The beer I had was a Cherry Porter. Not bad, but wasn't overly special either. Staff, when we did manage to get their attention, was friendly enough.
I was there to see a friend's band play and I found it really loud and dark inside, kind of like a large dungeon. Â It is spacious, so it would be a fun place to go with a group of friends. Â The bands that played were good, but the venue itself is too small to be hosting loud rock bands. Â I didn't try the food, but I had a great amber ale and my waitress was really nice and attentive. Â So I would go back, just on a quieter night.
Review Source:Excellent handcrafted beers, which are brewed in several tanks behind the bar. Recently, my buddy and I stopped here for Happy Hour (4PM-7PM Monday-Friday) when appetizers are half price and drafts are only $2. The Hefeweizen and the Manch-Vegas I.P.A. were excellent. Besides the drafts and a bottomless Diet Pepsi, we shared a Loaded Nachos (good chips, but way too little toppings), Red Tail Ale Sausages (spicy, lots of flavor with the sauerkraut, it's Manchvegas made) and split a Brew Battered Fish & Chips dinner (beer battered fish was very good, good crispy textured fries,& Â the cole slaw was very bitter & sour). The bartender was very cool and asked us if needed anything often. She kept refilling my Diet Pepsi, like three times.
Not much ambiance, more like a local watering hole. There's seating at the bar, a long narrow table in front of the bar with small games and seating, and table seating on the dance floor. For gaming, there's the Golden Tee and the Simpsons pinball machine. Milly's is fairly busy on the weekends when there are live bands and a dance club with DJ. The Halloween party here was very wild and the MPD Liquor Enforcement busted in here and the youngins' scattered out of the place so fast, we could hear a pin drop.
AMBIANCE: 1 STAR
HANDCRAFTED BEER: 5 STARS
FOOD: 3 STARS
SERVICE: 4 STARS
NIGHTLIFE ACTION: 4 STARS
OVERALL: 3.4 STARS Come for the beer, stay for the good times!!!
I don't think I'd make it to Milly's so often if it wasn't walking distance from work. Definitely a dive. Although, I agree with Larry B. about the excellent chicken quesadilla.
They have a non-smoking room in the back, but that may become irrelevant soon since the smoking ban bill passed in the state senate. I'm all for that, but what happened to "Live Free or Die"?
The handcrafted beers are fantastically good, and inexpensive. And the chicken quesadilla I ordered was one of the best I've ever had anywhere.
However, this place is a dump and a number of upkeep things have just been ignored. The wood floors are shot to hell - how hard is it to rent a sander and do some maintenance? The bathroom is one step away from whizzing in a trough at the old Fenway bathrooms. And for heaven's sake, can we find something better than sad tacky hotel barstools from 1991?
I went there recently to see the Joshua Tree band (really good, by the way), but the place was half-empty on a Saturday night. Had it not been for the band, there's no WAY I would've stayed.
It's a pity, because like I said -- the beers were outstanding.
Milly's is one of my local favorites, especially 4-7pm on a weeknight. Â This is when happy hour is, $1 drafts and half price appetizers. Â Their homemade drafts are awsome, I recommend the John Stark Porter. Â And I'm a huge fan of all the appetizers.
It's quite popular with the local crowds. Â And a great place to hang out.
