If you like a toothpick in your already flavorless pizza, then this place is for you! I went her as a Plan B on account of The Grotto being closed on Sunday nights... and with there being little that is decent and affordable (in terms of eats) on the south side, my friend and I decided to gamble on this previously unknown place.
Minsky's boasts of its Kansas City roots, and its general brick facade seemed pizza-esque enough to bait us. While offering high ceilings and an open space, the dinning room is still a tad Pizza Hut-ish to charge $16 bucks for a medium pizza.
We ordered a garden pizza, with their "signature" wheat crust. We got carry out, as I wanted to enjoy a fine micro brew. Yes, Minsky's does serve beer... but it's pretty sub par, with it's selection being a range of bud / miller types, and a measly 2 drafts; the obligatory Boulevard wheat, and bud light.
When peeling back the hatch of the pizza box, I'll admit that appearances were pretty promising. An abundance of vegetables could be seen peeking through ample snowy drifts of cheese. I eagerly pulled a slice and the first bite was when the let down set in. It was painfully bland. The wheat crust and average cheese were the only dominante flavors. The vegetables were pretty tasteless other than the occasional green pepper. It was during bite number 2, that I unearthed the buried treasure. A toothpick.. Why yes it was in my mouth too!
My appetite was pretty offended, so I promptly called Minsky's and explained the situation. They tried to offer us another pizza, which I quickly refused, and asked for my money back. Upon returning the pizza, the guy behind the counter actually looked at the toothpick shard that I had spit back into the box, and said "we don't even carry these kind of toothpicks here." I laughed and said "well someone in your in your kitchen must be bringing their own..." Which then summoned an even worse realization... the toothpick could have been in someone else's mouth first. As grossed out as I was, I'm almost glad the toothpick treasure saved me from eating more than a few bites of that pretty mediocre pizza.
This is a good place to go for pizza if your looking to get away from the normal Pizza Hut, Pizza Inn, Dominoes etc. This is a eat in restaurant but I am sure they do to go orders and maybe delivery. My wife and I both had calizone's. They were both tasty and were big enough for a meal. I also thought it was a good price at $6.50 for up to 4 toppings. The topping choice was impressive  with some odder offerings of crab and seafood. There are $5.00 kids meals available that come with a drink and end with a bag of oreo cookies. I will go again for sure.
