I keep meaning to write this review and just thought about it tonight. Â We went to Harbells yesterday and it was wonderful. Â This made me remember my last trip to Magoo's in June. Â My last visit to Magoos will be the last. Â I was there with my Husband and 2 kids ( 7 months and 5 years old). Â We went for lunch on a Saturday. Â At first they sat us at the very front table across from the hostess stand between the slanted wall and a very large group at the next table. Â This was a hard place for a family. Â Next the waitress took a very long time to come and get our drink orders. Â This was a painfully long wait for a family. Â When you go out with a young child (at least for us) there is a time limit to how long the meal can last. Â So we are waiting, and luckily the hostess could stare at us. Â
The waitress did show up and take our drink and food orders. Â We did order the fried mushrooms, and then 1 burgers , 1 wrap - chicken and my 5 year old ordered the mac n' cheese.
It seemed the whole time we were there the waitress did not want us to be there. Â I am not sure what we did, but she was not happy to wait on us. Â Maybe she only wanted to wait on the bar crowd, and bring out drinks, I am not sure. Â I am sure it is not easy to wait on families. Â But we do not get to go out much.
Now the worst part -
The food !!
The mushrooms were different, like they changed the recipe so something. Â We could not figure is out. Â And then the as the mushrooms cooled down the grosser they got. Â My husband thought maybe they brought out chicken livers. (yuck!!) After a couple of minutes, I guess when I could actually taste them, I could not eat any. Â They were horrible.
We asked the waitress, what was up, was the recipe changed, or something. Â And she told us they were the same as always.
We received our dinners:
The mac n' cheese had been changed, it was no longer Kraft, it was penne with some sort of garlic cream sauce. Â There was way to much garlic. Â My son did not eat it too much, but you never know with kids.
My husbands burger seemed ok, but the fries were horrible.
In wrap was ok, but the chicken tasted just like the mushrooms and then the fries, just horrible.
We figured it out, the fryer oil was rotten. Â They were frying everything in old oil. Â
The mushrooms, chicken and fries were all not the right color and all tasted like crap.
We told the waitress that we thought everything was being fried in old oil and she just stared at us. Â She did not know what to say. Â We said it again, and then she said she would tell her manager.
So my husband did eat his burger .. I just wanted to leave, but you know, we had the kids and everyone was hungry and we had not been out for a couple of months.
So she brought the check, and offered us a desert. Â (can you believe that). Â We said no and paid the bill. Â We did notice that the amount on the bill had been lowered by 20%. Â That was nice, but it would have been better for the manager to come out and say, hey we checked the oil, we agree it is old, (the fried food is gross), this will not happen again, I took 20% off for the trouble. Â Anything would be better than what happened.
I will never go back. Â This was just too much.
This is one of my favorite places in town to get an appetizer and chug a few beers. I haven't eaten much of their food items. Their chili cheese fries are delicious and huge. I have also eaten their cheese sticks and they were good but you can really get those anywhere. They have pretty good drink specials and a good happy hour. On Saturday's and Sunday's a domestic pitcher of beer is only $6.
The reason I'm only giving Magoo's 4 out of 5 stars is because sometimes, very rare, but has occurred I have seemed ignored and forced to wait long times for my drinks but that's only like when they are totally slammed. It's a good place to drink and have a good time!
