A great place to stumble into on a warm summers evening. Â I was strolling through Boulder for the first time in 30 years. Â I'm pretty sure I saw some of the same hippies from 30 years ago hanging out on Pearl St. Â I saw good reviews on Yelp for the Mountain Sun and got a random recommendation from the bike shop sales person..... good confirmation!
It was busy but one of the waiters quickly greeted me, took my name for a table and offered me a beer. Â I told him what I like and he gave me a great recommendation for their Belgian Trippel. Â It was excellent. Â The beer was excellent. Â The menu has some really interesting pub grub. Â All of it with something unique. Â I chose the "Date Night Burger". Â It was served on a perfect roll with feta cheese and an incredible date puree. Â The hand cut fries were excellent. Â
Great service, great beer, great food - that's a hat trick! Â Highly recommended.
This place was amazing! The staff was as nice as any place I've ever been. There was a bit of a wait when there on a Friday night, but we were offered free beer when our time passed. We were seated 5 minutes later. The beer was excellent! Absolutely the best brewery we visited in CO! There really was a team mentality in the restaurant, every server who walked by offered to top off our water, asked us if we needed anything, etc.
The food was amazing! The burger I had was out of this world. I can't wait to go again!
I have been here so many times and just realized I have never left them a review!!
So, obviously I like this place, as I said, I come here often. Â
First: Â Yes, they may get busy, so they may not be able to be shoved straight up your ass during the whole meal (who would want that anyway!?) but they are always so friendly, attentive, and just love to chat with you about local food, music, art, whatever. Â Plus (added bonus) everyone who is employed here is terribly good looking ;)
Second: Â I have never gotten a burger here. Â I got the burrito once, and have never been able to switch off. Â Their vegetarian green chili is to die for, or they have one that has beef in it. Â That one is a red sauce and is pretty spicy, but also yummy. Â Also, I am big fan of their fries. Â I like to get cheese on mine.
Third: Â The place is so cool and quirky. Â Cash only, but they will allow you to mail your check back to them!!! Â It is so weird, but they totally believe in humanity and karma, talk about a breath of fresh air! Â Also, if someone sends something back, or if something wasn't made right, instead of them throwing the food out, they will offer the food (as samples) to people sitting around the bar. Â They also always offer free samples of beer (and pretty much anything else).
Fourth: Â Beer. Â Oh my, the beer. Â DELICIOUS. Â They have an amazing selection that is brewed in house and the selection will change seasonally. Â Also, moderately priced.
We bring anyone visiting us from out of town here to sample the lovely beer, eat fresh, local food, and to see a restaurant that truly captures the essence and feel of Boulder!
Went here hoping for some pub food and good beer and it met my expectations with flying colors. They asked if we had been there before and when we said no, the waiter asked what types of beers we liked and promptly brought over 4 samples to aid in our decision. It was a difficult decision since they were all really good, but I ended up with the Black IPA and my wife had the Raspberry Wheat.
Then came time for the food. There were a number of burgers and other meals that sounded good. I got the special wrap for the day and my wife got a burger and chips. Burger was cooked medium well just like she ordered and the wrap was very tasty.
I would definitely recommend Mountain Sun for when you're craving some pub food or just looking for a place to go have some really good beers. The one thing to be aware of is that it is cash only, which caught me off guard. Luckily I had some cash on me.
Really, truly, amazing customer service. I cannot say more about the quality and friendliness of their managers. We had a snafu with our order the other night (we had to wait about 35 min, the kitchen lost our order) and our entire meal was given to us for free. None of us even complained about the wait.
Also, epic burgers.
Great place. Arrived on a Saturday at 11:00 am as they were opening. By noon they were packed. Our waitress could not have been better. Allowed multiple tastings. As many as we wanted. Eggplant sliders were EGGCELLENT! French fries great. Burrito was huge. We are so glad we stopped here on our visit through Boulder. Beat the crowd!!!
Review Source:This place was just OK. We had gone in because my husband was craving a burger. Since the reviews were so good we went here. I'm thinking that the only reason for all the good reviews is the beer. Our waiter was average. Nothing special but not bad, although he was quite slow for a Monday afternoon. The burger was a little dry with no seasoning on it, salt and pepper people! That is all it needed. The fries that they brag about in their menu were nothing special at all. Under seasoned and a little limp. We both got the junk burger and I was just disappointed in the size and taste. We also got the nachos for an appetizer. Nothing I couldn't make at home.... Overall we probably wont go back. And no credit cards accepted.
Review Source:Our first stop in Boulder and one of our favorites. Â Some really great beer and some of the most knowledgable wait staff I've encountered. Â Really like their philosophy towards the business as well as the food and beer quality. Â I'm a fan, and if we lived close by I'd be a regular!
Review Source:I love this place! It's one of the first places I ate at when I first moved here. I've been meaning to write a review for it as it's been burning a hole in my metaphorical yelper's pocket! Consistency is so important to me and I'm consistently satisfied every time I come here. Anytime I have a visitor, I make a mandatory trip to Boulder to take them here. The wait for a table? What wait?? There's really no wait when you get to sample all their beers until you settle on one in the back at the bar. IPAs! So many IPAs to choose from! It's IPA paradise for me! The bartenders are quick and friendly! They're never resting and always pouring!
When we sit at our table, we order a basket of fries - pretty much devoured right after they are set down... And I just can't help it. I try to be adventurous (monterey chicken, burgers, gooney bird..), but ever since my first time at mountain sun, the spicy pollo asada burrito is just the thing for me (hold that sour cream! and spicy red sauce on the side please!). I love spicy and boy can that red sauce get spicy! Technically, I've tried most of the burgers...I "tax" my visiting friends with a bite of theirs..you know, just to make sure everything was prepared ok. And those burgers always are! But in the future, I'll still need to taste test... just to verify...
Amazing service here! If you've ever read any of my reviews, you'll know that poor service is a pet peeve of mine and I really don't think there's any excuse for it. This is not an issue here. It's always crowded and I'm ALWAYS impressed at how attentive my servers are to me. I remember once they forgot to put the spicy red sauce on the side. I didn't even mention it to the server (no big deal), but the manager noticed and personally came by and said "we're so sorry! do you want a new one?" I appreciated that he took the time to try to fix the error. I declined, seeing as the burrito was still utterly delicious (I just had a few extra beads of sweat). He comped my beer - no complaints here! Hmm...maybe it's time for a trip up to Boulder soon.
Stopped in based on some yelp reviews I read--looks like the best burger in Boulder. We walked into an hour wait, but the hostess was nice enough to take my cell number and call me when it was ready, which afforded me the time to walk down Pearl. A gentleman called me and very enthusiastically told me our table was ready about 35 minutes later, which set a very positive tone for the meal.
My friend and I sat down, and noticed that they didn't accept credit cards. We got up to leave, and our waiter and another gentleman working there practically begged us to stay, offering the ATM in the restaurant, or, my favorite part, offering to send our bill home with us along with a self address stamped envelope so we could pay later. He even brought out the envelope to show us. Class act, for sure.
Our waitress was incredibly friendly and professional. Sorry to say I don't remember her name, but she had dark curly hair and some sweet boots on. On my way in, I had seen a patron eating fries with some sort of green sauce. I asked her if she by chance knew what it was, and she advised probably the vegetarian green chile. I ordered some to go with my burger, the Junk burger.
The place was jumping and our waitress was super busy, so another waitress (some blonde girl) brought our food. She was not friendly at all. I remarked that the green chile was not what I had seen, and she stated 'did you order it?', and then left after I replied yes, stunned. I never got the green sauce I was looking for and we all wondered at my table why that girl was in customer service....
The burger was really good, moist and done medium rare just as requested. Fries were good as well--gotta say I loved the part on the menu where they state if your fries aren't up to par, they will replace them. The waitress came by specifically to check on our fries, which was nice.
I would go back...but if I got that waitress who gave us our food, I would either leave or ask to be reseated. Their customer service was so good other than her.
Seriously, this place is totally amazing and worth all the great reviews here. Â This is hand-down some of the best beer I've ever had in my life. Â Their food was pretty darn delicious as well.
The first person to greet us came over to ask about our tastes in beer, then brought us four samples he thought we would enjoy. Â Since my partner and I have different tastes, it was like we got to sample 8 different beers. Â It was love at first drink for me with the Annapura Amber - this is by far the smoothest amber ale I've ever drank - and the Raspberry Wheat. Â My partner greatly enjoyed the Kolsch and the Chazz Cat Rye. Â I sampled the Java Porter, the Chocolate Stout, and the Brown Ale. Â These were all good well.
We decided to split the avocado and cheese sandwich to have something to snack on. Â Holy cow, this sandwich was amazing! Â The avocado tasted really fresh and I loved the flavor combinations.
I highly recommend this place if you're in the area.
Mountain Sun does a quality job all the way around. We stopped in on a busy Memorial Day weekend and they got our party of 5 seated within 15 minutes. The entire staff is on the whole quite pleasant and we thought our hostess and server were definitely above average. The Belgian Trippel, Jah Mon ginger beer, and blackberry wheat were quite tasty an spot on style wise, while the Rye IPA and some of the stouts were good but not great. I'd recommend trying the Date Night burger, which has bacon, goat cheese, and a date purée and is fantastic. Probably the most unique item in the menu, and with a better bun would have qualified as one of the best I've ever had. Pricing is very good, and it makes a great starting point for a Pearl Street cruise.
Review Source:The beer at this place is so good! I loved the Jah Mon Ginger Beer. They aren't shy with the ginger, and it was very refreshing to experience such an unusual flavor. I also had the opportunity to try the Date Night Burger. It had dates, goat cheese, and bacon. That flavor combination is completely unexpected and completely delicious! Â There is definitely a reason this place is busy all the time.
Review Source:Took my parents here when they visited so they could get the true Boulder experience. They now affectionately refer to it as the "Happy Hippy Place." Â Often a long wait for a table but with the friendly staff and tasty brews, the wait is certainly beerable. Â
With the communal service I felt I've never been neglected; also interesting to see the brew master cooking. Â That said, the food isn't at the peak of gastronomical sciences... it's simple and good.
$13.25 for a pitcher of beer? I love this state.
Mountain Sun Pub was the first place I sat down and had a beer in Colorado - and I'm sure glad we did. The menu is simple - very easy going and reasonably priced. The beer selection is pretty incredible (and also very reasonably priced). Place was jumping on a Wednesday afternoon when we strolled on in. No problem getting a seat though and our waitress was attentive, but not annoying.
I washed my beer down with a simple grilled cheese with bacon. Perfect start to an incredible week in that great state.
Both sad and glad I didn't go to college in Boulder, because if I had I would have spent a lot of money in this place. I mean... they have board games!!!!
Food was EXCELLENT! And the beer was wonderful as well! The service was great, and the atmosphere was really nice! However-- we were a little overwhelmed by the service-- they are very chatty people! My husband and I are pretty introverted, so it was slightly uncomfortable. However-- some of you might not mind that at all. Give this place a try, their food and beer is excellent.
Review Source:Long wait, but the burger I got was worth it! It had a fig jam and chilies on it and I got it on gluten free bread. So damn yummy! Hubby enjoyed his meal too. The service was decent once we were seated and things moved along OK from the kitchen.
NOTE: this place is CASH ONLY and they conveniently have an ATM inside if you feel like getting raped in fees. :)
- CASH ONLY.
- Inattentive service (server walked past us twice, stared at our empty glasses... and kept walking)
- The 4.5 stars probably refers mostly to their home-brewed beer, because it definitely doesn't refer to the mediocre food.
- What's all the hullabaloo about the fries? Â They were burnt and lacked flavor. Â If you like 5 Guys fries, you will probably like these.
- This is America, so why doesn't my water come with ice? :(
- Does anyone work here who isn't a hippie?
Great outdoor counter seating for people watching. Food was delicious! Our party of three each got different entrees and were very pleased with everything.
Update: 4/21/13 The food again was delicious but each time we come, I leave more and more disappointed in the service. The restaurant seems unorganized, servers are all over the place, no order.
Today, after sitting down our waitress introduced herself the told us she would be bring water by since she couldn't take our drink order then. She soon returned to take drink orders, water never came. When she returned with our ordered drinks, we were told that our food order couldn't be taken because she would be yelled at for taking two orders together. 5 minutes later, she was ready to take our order. After getting our food we did not see our waitress again until we flagged her down (after a number of unsuccessful attempts) for drink refills. Not a big deal if it had not been 10 minutes without a drink eating a spicy meal. I did however notice that she had an opportunity to serve HERSELF a taster beer from the wall of taps. Glad someone's thirst was quenched at least. What a disappointment.
Stopped in here while brewery hopping around the area for a beer and some food. The food was awesome!!! Their nachos are maybe the best i have ever had!! All the food we had was great and they have a good beer selection.
The decor was simple yet kinda cool, the staff was very good and it was a college crowd but, was wasn't filled with drunk retards. All in all it was a great experience and i cant wait to go back!!!
Well this place is obviously awesome. Â A brewpub with tons of different kinds of beers (I had a very yummy IPA and a Rye-PA) and decent food (black bean soup, kinda bland, unfortunately) with the Williamsburg (i.e. Brooklyn) cast of characters? Â My friend and I ordered 3 beers and a cup of soup and it was 18, that's EIGHTEEN, dollars. Â That's insanely cheap for good craft beers. Â As my 4-stars say, Yay! I'm a fan.
Review Source:This was our first stop in Boulder and a memorable one at that. Awesome vibes and service. So damn peaceful. Great microbrewed craft beer - those stouts are nuts.
At one point in the meal I just leaned back, took a look around and said something to the effect of "so this is Boulder, eh?" Felt like I had arrived. Part of me wishes I had never left.
Great spot for a first night out in Boulder. Â It was stout month while we visited so they had a lot of great specialty stouts on tap.
I started off with the Black Gold - a peanut butter stout. Â The beer was great though I wish it had just a bit more peanut butter flavor to it. Â It is something like 11% ABV so it was served only in 8 oz pours. A few of these and you should be good to go!
I also had the Belgian dip chocolate stout. Â I preferred this one as it was a bit more mellow than the Black Gold and had the perfect amount of chocolate aromas/flavors.
The nachos were really good, really messy (smothered in salsa and black beans), but again really good. Â Roll up your sleeves for this one.
The place is loud and crowded (we went on a Thursday night) so be prepared for that. Â The thing that struck me the most was the fact that everyone seemed to know each other here and was extremely friendly (including the servers). Â This place seems like it is a staple for the city of Boulder and you can certainly tell. Â Overall this place did a great job a setting the vibe for our trip.
What a great place...
Almost 20 house made brews, whth no fewer than six were porters/stouts when I visited (the selection rotates) ( am partial to dark beers).  They offer 8oz pours for only USD 2.80, a great way to try several beers and not worry about driving. (Of course, they will let you have taste samples) 16oz glasses are only USD4.75.
Food is very good, don;t miss the basil bleu cheese burger.
Super friendly staff, too.
A couple of oddities: Â No sit down bar (there is a small stand up one), so less easy to chat with other patrons. Would have given five stars if they did. Â Also, cash only.
If you are not into the packed-house, loose your voice just talking to the person next to you thing; you might want to try the main brewery, Southern Sun. Â I like the Mountain sun for the amazing beer but it's rare to find a place to sit with a group of four.
I dig their tempeh reuben and definitely try as many beers as you can. Â They are my favorite brewery as far as beer quality goes in Boulder, fo sho!
Absolutely loved this place.
Came here with a group of 10 and we all got our food and drinks quick and we were out of there in record time.
I got the Java Porter and it might be my favorite beer I've ever tried. I was told it has caffeine in it as well, but it definitely didn't help with the food coma haha. The atmosphere is real hippie esque and casual. For my entree I got the Chicken asada burrito. I was expecting a chipotle sized burrito, but this huuuge sauce covered enchilda type burrito comes out. It was covered in a red hot sauce and really made the burrito taste amazing.. If you're torn between the burrito and something else.. get the burrito.
Overall this place is exactly what you want in a casual sit down restaurant. The wait staff is incredibly helpful and nice and the food is amazing.
The beer that I tasted at Mountain Sun was only just okay, but I still totally adore this place. As in, I'm tempted to give it five stars even though I just came in for a quick snack and a brew.
We were seated promptly, and I really love that the staff works as a team here. They don't have any job titles. A hostess is a server is a busser. They were hiring while we were there, and I enjoyed reading a little more about the business philosophy behind this place. They treat their employees right, and it definitely showed--everyone working there was super friendly.
They have a pretty lengthy list of beers brewed in house. We sampled the Trickster Stout, which purports to be a very hoppy stout. If you ask me, this was really an Imperial Black Ale, and not the best example of one. We politely ordered the Java Porter instead. Does anyone else have the same awkward feeling after sampling a beer they don't really care for? I don't feel like I can ask for another sample, so then I just pick a beer and hope I like it. The Java Porter was also just okay. The carbonation was way too high, and in a porter, if the carbonation is going to be off, I'd rather it's only very lightly carbonated. I do appreciate that they had several dark beers on offer--there was also a Pearl Street Porter available. Perhaps that was the way to go.
We shared a basket of fries and a bowl of veggie chili, too. The fries were great--hand cut, and cooked just right. The chili was also great, especially after the shitty effort at that same dish we had at Boulder Brewing the day before. The chili was chock full of beans and nicely spiced. It came with tortilla chips on the side.
I just want y'all to know that I'm very obviously a baller because after snackin' and drankin' at Mountain Sun, I still managed to meet my parents less than an hour later and take down a burrito. Perhaps this Herculean effort is the reason my clothes don't fit so great anymore.
If it meant eating at Mountain Sun (and Sun Deli and Illegal Pete's, my other Boulder favs) on the reg, I'd be so down to pay astronomical rent and live among the rich hippies that populate that fair city.
Gotta love the combination of good beer, good food and a great location. Â Easy to get to from Pearl Street, Mountain Sun offers a great escape. Â Their menu changes regularly depending on what is fresh, and their specials are usually the best route to take. Â
It can be crowded, so I would recommend getting there early to beat the rush, but Mountain Sun provides a great laid back atmosphere to meet and talk with some of the Boulder locals over a great brewed in-house beer selection.
Holy hamburger goodness!!! As everyoene can make a decent burger slap cheese on it but if you are looking for a unique experience in a burger with unique tastes this is the place. So even with all of the reviews even with the hype this place did not dissapoint.
First off if not from the Boulder area this is CASH ONLY, ATM in the back of restaurant. Secondly the parking is a little difficult as on Pearl St. and gets busy. As others have mentioned get there early as this place will fill up just to allow for extra time.
As to the food...amazing. Started out with the French onion soup for appetizer as was hungry and didn't want to get nachos or fries. It was good nothing absolutely amazing but quality. Then with dinner I ordered a Oatmeal stout that was perfect exactly what I was expecting. Now as to the best part the burgers - I got the Date Night burger and my girl got a special burger with pears arrugala and basalmic reduction. They were both absoultely delicious. My date night was such a unique burger with goat cheese and date spread with bacon and jalapenos - I mean if that doesn't get you going then you need to check your pulse! Highly suggest this place.
Also live music on Sunday nights starting at 10 pm.
Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery is a loud, cash-only local brewery that brings to mind the 90's Smash Mouth #1 hit "Walkin' on the Sun" with it's iconic twist of hippie ideals suburbanized into commercial success. Mountain Sun is a micro-brew where every employee does every job and you'll find a menu of vegetarian & healthy choices mixed with classic American burgers and Mexican burritos.
And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
Just singin' and clappin' man what the hell happened
The "Team Service" concept works as we rarely were without someone checking in to help. Of course, half the time, we simply said someone else was already "handling it." Hooray for a co-op that actually succeeds in meeting the needs of all.
You might as well be walkin' on the sun
One of the "friendly many" offered to bring some free samples of beers to help choose which one matched our moods. We sampled Free samples of Blackberry Wheat, Colorado Kind Ale, Illusion Dweller I.P.A., FYIPA, and Quinn's Golden Ale. Olivia Z. got the Blackberry Wheat while I had the Illusion Dweller IPA followed by a Colorado Kind Ale. There is definitely a beer or four here for everyone and with free samples, how can you resist? Well, my mom the rebel can and got a red wine since she's not a fan of beers.
It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke
And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony
Oliva got a bowl of the Vegetarian Black Bean Chili ($3.95) with the Cheese add-on ($1 extra). It was gooey and thick though a tad too sweet for real Mountain Men. We split an appetizer of The Pub's Famous Fries (Med. $2.75) which are fresh cut and served hotter than the sun. They needed lots of salt, so, we added plenty of sprinkles for some flavor while eating them carefully not to burn our fingers or tongue.
My mom's order of the house specialty Tim's Blackened Chicken Quesadilla ($8.50) was as tasty as it was huge. They brought a large plate with covered with guacamole, salsa, and a half-moon of quesadilla. It was the perfect size until the server said he'd bring the other half once we finished this one. What other half? Yikes... we better share. She ate half and we ended up getting the rest to go.
For me, a burger was calling my name so I answered with the Jalapeno Burger ($8.00) and an extra side of Green Chilies ($1.25) for some kick. The bun was too trivial while the 2/3 lb. of beef was parched. Luckily the chilies and cheese brought some moisture to the sandwich. A-ok, but not groovy.
And if you follow there may be a tomorrow
But if the offer's shunned you might as well be walkin' on the sun
I'm a much bigger fan of Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery than I am of Smash Mouth. The brews were brilliant, the service was synergetic, and the food was filling. We left quenched and headed back out into the Rocky Mountain sun to enjoy the rest of our evening.
You might as well be walkin' on the sun.
Popped in here for a burger and a brew while I was in Boulder. Â It's a lively friendly place at the start of the Pearl Street pedestrian area. The clientele run the gamut from students to crunchies to tourists so it's kind of a fun place to come in people watch. They are cash only so hit the ATM before coming in.
The burgers are A-OK especially when washed down with a glass of Amber. I also love their spinach salad , a HUGE half salad was under $5 so that was a steal. The service is really friendly and everyone working there takes the time to make sure you're looked after and happy.
I stopped here one day to pick up some growler before an afternoon BBQ and realized they only take cash, which I never carry. Â So after realizing I only had enough to cover one of the two growers I ordered, the waitress gave me a Karma Envelope, which allowed me to send in a check for my whole order to send back when I got home. Â I loved this! Â Only in Boulder can you get a Karma Envelope to pay later. Â No name was taken and they just wrote the price inside the envelope.
Their beer is pretty good, but their growlers are just giant Mason jars, which make for a difficult pour.
