Mr G's Bar & Grill

I was pretty psyched about visiting this place since I heard good things about it.

To start, the place was clean, the staff was nice and the layout pretty cool, sort of a combination of rooms giving a very different feel in each room, one of which was empty due to the band setting up in part of this area.

We arrived at about 8pm on a Friday and although they take reservations, it was a moot  point since there were a few tables open.
The menu was just ok, not a ton of choices as one would expect of a restaurant of this size, but enough where we had no problem finding what we wanted to eat.
The server did tell us that the menu had recently been trimmed down as a result of lack of interest, so tweaking the menu may be a work in progress.

The food we had was excellent, cooked right, and presented well.

So why a deduction of stars??? Speed of receiving food!  As a result of a call-off, they were short on kitchen staff (a cook I think), which is not the fault of the restaurant, but having a suitable substitution for the missing staff is on them. As a result of this absent staff member, there was quite a long delay on getting our food.
My 2nd issue was the band...the music was great and they were very talented, BUT...having the volume set for a night at the Filmore or the Magic Bag, is not apropos for this type of place, and the management should have been on top of that! As I write this the next morning, my right ear is still ringing a little (something I like to save for the head-liners like Kings of Leon tonight at DTE row L center).

My last point of issue is, as with any restaurant or bar in Michigan as well as 80% of the rest of the US, this place was free of smoke, which was nice. And even though I was not engulfed in smoke (almost non-existent) it was clear that smoking is not discouraged for the "later" crowd, which started to fill the room as we left at around 12:30.

So 5 stars for food, server, talent and ambiance...and deductions for delays, band volume, and smoking.

We had fun and will likely return.
