This place is not just a good bar for St. Simons, it is probably my favorite bar on the planet. Â It has been owned by locals for over 35 years and maintains the same vibe, year after year. Â Classic rock always wafts through the speakers, and gets progressively louder as the night goes on. Â The serve the coldest Budweiser on the island and the mixed drinks are large and cheap. Â Just don't order a fru-fru drink here.
There are cool classic American oil paintings on the wall, three pool tables (75 cents a game), and free darts. Â It also has a fireplace for the cooler months and lots of bookshelves and rustic furniture. Â
The only downside is the constant cigarette smoke. Â I don't think they have gotten the memo on the non-smoking trend in the rest of the world. Â I think that is just another remnant from the 70's era when this bar was born. Â
The clientele is generally older, and mostly locals. Â However, it does get hoppin' on the weekends and occasionally hosts a live band. Â The bands are usually local, usually classic rock, and usually good - at least the few I have seen. Â
Don't miss this spot when you are in St. Simons. Â Unless, of course, you like fru-fru drinks, or can't abide a little cigarette smoke.
Maybe it is because I haven't smoked in close to 3 years, but I could not stand going in this place anymore. I use to love it.
This past weekend we opened the door and walked in. It was so smokey that we left after about 5 seconds of standing there. After such a short stay there we smelled like smoke all night.
I used to go the Murphy's nearly every Friday night. It is a great bar, good atmosphere and a generally a lot of fun people there. Murphy's is a good place to go hang out with friends and meet some new ones and play some pool or darts.
It's been quite a while since moved away from St. Simons but I have great memories of Murphy's
