My wife and I arrived at about 330 for a late lunch and were one of only 3 or 4 tables. Â We sat ourselves per the sign and I guess they didn't notice us because we waited about 5 minutes before our waitress came by. Â I had gotten up and got the menus myself while we waited for her, so she asked if we were ready to order. Â I told her we needed just a couple more minutes. Â After 10 minutes I was discouraged, at 15 minutes we decided to make our way to Addison's. Â I wish I could be reviewing the food but that's not the case. Just the dismal customer service. Â Kitchen staff hanging out in the front of the building smoking, no hostess, no waitress. Â Just head on down to Addison's and save yourself the headache.
Review Source:When I was going to school at Mizzou, this was my place to splurge.
I dont care if I had $5 left in my account, I was going to find some way to eat there at least once a week. My goal was to try everything on the menu at least once.
I only got 1/4 of the way there before I graduated and everytime we pass through there I want to stop for dinner!
I usually got the steak sandwich since it was cheaper than an actual steak but that's basically all that it was.
Frogs legs are a must.
The best part is that they get most of their food and produce from local farmers. Fresh, in season and TASTY.
Also a great place for a date :) Pick a night when they have their live jazz music.
I have had better in Columbia.  I order a steak sandwich for lunch and it came to me with a hunk of meat on top of two small pieces of toasted bread.  I couldn't even think of making a sandwich with what I had before me so I ate it like a steak accompanied with bread.  It was cooked like I asked but didn't have much flavor.  My friend ordered French dip which looked pretty good but she said it wasn't anything that special.  Menu was pretty extensive and it might be a better place to have dinner.  It had a fairly large crowed for lunch and they appeared to be business people.  The service was just OK the waitress seemed like we were more of an inconvenience than customers.  Everything was A' la carte  so if you wanted fries you had to order them separate.  I will give them another try but I have had better in Columbia and cannot understand all the hype about Murry's.
Review Source:Apparently Murry's closed for the week.
How do they communicate this? Â Through the website? Â No. Â Website says the restaurant is open. Â When I called to confirm that they're open? Â No. Â Instead my two calls just went unanswered ... not even a $10 answering machine to tell the caller that the restaurant is closed for a week. Â No. Â In the ultimate form of arrogance, the restaurant only posts a sign on the door - make the customer come all the way to the restaurant to find out.
I was disappointed. Â I was entertaining clients who are from out of town (as was I), and had gotten them excited about finding a place with live jazz music - even the live piano player on Monday nights (per the website, anyway). Â I had gone to the trouble of attempting to confirm that the place was open and would have music - as indicated on the website. Â As noted, Murry's did not offer an indication that there wasn't music (or, even food, for that matter), via it's channels of communication excepting for the storefront. Â It's never fun to build up a client's expectations to have them dashed - even when it isn't about something core to business. Â I don't want to be "that guy" who didn't come through.
Fortunately, Addison's did come through. Â Yes, I am a fan of Addison's, and they continue to earn my patronage with a good experience (product, milieu, staff, pricing, etc.).

Subsequent event:
I just received a 'compliment' regarding my review from a Yelp user named Como who directed me to remove my review because it wreaked of arrogance and unfamiliarity with the Murry's experience. Â Como had one other review over the past 12 months. Â Is Como related to Murry's? Â I dunno'. Â It's tempting to downgrade my rating from the 2 stars that I had it at, but I won't play that game with Como.
First time here and I liked it! I ordered the catfish sandwich which was a big chunk of meat so I had part of it on the sandwich and part of it by itself. Â No jazz music the day I went but I hopefully I can experience that next time I'm in town. Â Service was good; we went during a weekday afternoon.
Review Source:Well I'm glad the place wasn't as crowded on a Monday night as the other reviewers were saying. Â
Here's my thoughts on the food: Â the fried peppers with powdered sugar were tasty but too much for just two of us; the Philly Steak was very good and the beef they use is delicious; the Grilled Cheese sandwich had all kinds of veggies on it and my daughter (who is rather picky) really liked it. Â We also had a side of French fries - they were very good.
Sadly, we can't comment on the desserts. They looked good up on the board - but we were too stuffed to indulge. Â ;)
A favorite of friends and family alike, it really doesn't get much better in Columbia than Murry's. Â A time tested menu offering everything Murry's does best always entices regardless of its familiarity. Â
The atmosphere in Murry's is half of what makes the place as great as it is, dark wood, low lighting, closely grouped tables; it truly is a jazz club that happens to have a stellar menu.
True, sometimes the University kids on the service staff can be a bit, um, spacey, I should say, but they're college kids, whatever. Â The food never disappoints and the managers will make things right if it comes down to that, which it never has for me or my family. Â We've been going to Murry's since I can remember and will continue to go as often as we can.
Huge applause to the owners for hosting the We Always Swing jazz series. Â It is extremely difficult to get well known, truly talented jazz musicians to go to mid-Missouri. Â The city of Columbia and all it's residents are extremely lucky that this series has brought so many amazing musicians to Murry's over the years. Â Be sure to check and see if there are any shows going on at Murry's on a regular basis and while you're checking, sit down, have a drink and a good meal and your soul will be better for it.
I have been here quite a few times (not my choice). They are ALWAYS busy. They are very expensive because everything is a la cart. I ordered the chicken poblano based on the recommendation of the waitress. It came out and looked like two previously frozen chicken breasts topped with a square piece of white american cheese. The green sauce on top is not good at all. Overall I haven't ever had a good experience here.
Review Source:I would have given Murry's 4 stars, but the parking is horrendous and limited hours make it a hassle to get in to get a table. Â That being said, if you can get in, they have an appetizer that will make you raise your eyebrows, but it is WORTH TRYING. Â Fried bell peppers sprinkled with powdered sugar! Â WOW! Don't pass them up-the mixture of sweet and savory is something you won't find elsewhere in Columbia! Â The entrees are fairly good, take your pick. Â The last notable item is the ooey-gooey butter cake. Â A nice finish to a meal.
Review Source:So this review wont comment much on the establishment much itself as I got my order at the bar, in and out just like that. Did not stay long. I came in at 6ish on a Saturday night to sample the highly touted dessert menu that Murry's is well known for in Columbia. I have never eaten anything from Murry's before till this. I'm a sucker for good cake of all kinds so Murry's was the easy choice of course. The Gooey Butter Cake is said to be the best in Columbia on weekends so I took my chances and went with the crowd  to see for myself.
For less then 5 bucks you get vanilla ice cream (really good to!) and a square piece of the cake that's about the size of 2 decks of cards give or take. It looks like a large lemon bar at first glance but your taste buds quickly disclose a different story.
Its got a creamy texture for the most part with a thicker, crunchy thin bottom crust. A classic rich butter taste with a 1-2 punch of vanilla and tartness to follow. You can even get a hint of the eggs and cream/milk that's likely part of the recipe. Following each bite with a spoonful of ice cream is a perfect match,
Now I happen to be a carrot cake fanatic so nothing can compare to my opinions of that but this creation is certainly worth a try if you want to venture past traditional flavors of cake you find elsewhere.
Yes I never give one star. But I feel must for this place. I've never really been a fan and really the only good thing I can say about Murry's is that it is constantly OK. But for some reason every one loves it here and it is the place to go in Columbia. Waiting 45 minutes to get a table next to the band for OK food just isn't for me, especially in Columbia!
I asked my girlfriend who LOVES blue cheese how the Blue Cheese Chip Bread was...."it's alright."
Here are some of the notes I made while eating: steak was fatty, shrimp very much a pain in the arse to eat, water never refilled (and we were drinking wine....), no separate checks. I could, no SHOULD go on. But I won't. I just don't understand why everyone loves this place when they've clearly fooled everyone on the name alone.
Another positive is that you can steal wifi from the Upper Crust while you wait. When one of the positives about a place includes another place, that can't be good.
Murry's was not what I expected at all. It's very casual, HUGE inside, and a little crowded. The first time I tried to go here for dinner on a Thursday at 5pm, and there was a 45 minute wait. I finally did get in without any wait on a Saturday night at 9pm. They serve dinner until midnight, which is awesome, and they have a live band (piano, stand-up bass, jazz drum, and some brass instrument). It was really fun and very reasonable, price-wise.
The food was good, but the menu wasn't. The menu says things like "Chicken", "Steak", etc. under entrees... and that's it. It seems like it really caters to regulars who already know what the chicken dish is. But if you have food allergies or just dislikes, you'll spend a lot of time talking to the waitress to figure out what's in the entrees. Also, the entrees are ONLY the "chicken" or "steak"; you need to order any sides extra. The mashed potatoes are DELICIOUS, and let's just say those green pepper rings are something else!
It's impossible for me to deny at this point  in my "career" that I'm not a foodie.
Let me tell you, this is my favorite restaurant. Â Ever. Â Out of anywhere. Â There isn't a single thing on the menu that isn't shank-someone good.
Back in my early teens, it used to be all about the cheese bread, the onion rings, the steak sandwich. Â Let me tell you, it's still about the cheese bread and the onion rings--but as an adult I'm even more appreciative of the menu. Â Their green pepper rings are -to die for.- Â The Cajun hot or cold shrimp is so good--I always steal it off my Mom's plate. Â The ahi tuna is big enough to split and always seared exactly to perfection--and they have no idea how to make a bad salad or side. Â Did I mention the cheese bread? Â Oh, I did? Â Eat the cheese bread. Â Then order more and eat it again.
The desserts are fair, though I almost never have room. Â I will say that their flourless chocolate cake they call "The Black Beast" will be one of the best desserts of your life.
Lastly, their wine list is nothing to sneeze about--though expensive (hey, it's the Midwest).
Go. Â Just go. Â Go now. Â Go often.
And live jazz on Fridays!
Have lived in the area for 16 years and feel bad that I just found out about Murry's. The food was excellent and I loved the ala carte style menu. The jazz trio was very good and were obviously enjoying themselves, making the evening that much more fun. I will be making this a regular stop.
Review Source:2 stars are for food only. Parking is a hassle. Waited 1 & 3/4 hours for table. Watched parties with same number of guests get seated before us. Waitress was worse than abysmal - though her co-worker was very helpful. However, food was really great for the price. I'm told that our experience was rare. Nevertheless, service was pitiful.
Review Source:Murry's has been doing its thing for years and years. Â I used to frequent this club/restaurant in med school/residency, both as a patron and as a musician, and this past weekend, had a chance to do both again.
Much has changed - in mostly good ways. Â They have expanded their capacity from back in the day, so they can accommodate more people - this is a very good thing. Â Their food is good - not 'healthy eats', but definitely tasty. Â I had fried oysters which were quite good, and their salads are great (I had the Murry's special) and huge. Â Although I'm not a drinker, they have a good selection of beers and wines.
The bad? Â They are so popular that the wait time can be north of an hour at peak eating time (7-8pm on a Fri/Sat). Â If you don't mind the wait, then you're golden. Â Just expect that. Â The place clears out some after dinner, and then it's more of a jazz/hanging out crowd - there to drink, have fun, and enjoy good music.
But one of the truly great things about Murry's is that continue to keep jazz alive in Columbia, MO - and just in general. Â They feature local professionals regularly - Tom Andes, Ken Kehner, and many others. Â And they ALSO have a series of national talent that comes to town. Â This past Sunday, they featured Joey Calderazzo for two shows - YES, freaking JOEY CALDERAZZO. Â If you're not a jazzer, you don't care (or you can pretend.... Jack Johnson or something). Â If you are, then you'll know he's one of the top 5 jazz pianists in the world right now. Â Way cool.
I had a good experience with service, but granted, I was also a musician on the night I went. That said, I think if you are looking for really good food  music, you can't go wrong!
This place is good. Â Nice and dark inside - there's a bar and, at times, live jazz. Â The food is tasty and also CHEAP. Â I'm amazed at how cheap the food is here. Â Murry's is also a great place to get a dessert, they've got some very succulent treats. Â
They usually have a pretty decent beer on special as well and it's a good place for a date or to relax and knock back a few libations (esp. when there's some jazz playing).
PS: If you go during peak hours on Fri / Sat expect to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated. Â
PSS: Don't bother going on Sunday, they're closed :(
A local's fav spot - it's an american restaurant with jazz music. The restaurant was packed when I walked in at 8 PM. I went to Murry's  for dinner - had some fried oysters and fillet mignon - nothing fancy however food was great! I had a J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon reasonably priced at $5. The prices were reasonable and it looked like a family favorite joint. For dessert I had the 'Death by chocolate' it was a bar of chocolate ganache with toasted nuts and cream - simple but delicious. The service was just ok not sure if it's because it was busy but the waitress was not very attentive.
Review Source:This is my absolute favorite place to eat in Columbia for a number of reasons. Â 1. It's open late. Kitchen closes at midnight. 2. The ambiance is lovely...relaxed and refined. Â You can dress it up or dress it down and you'll always feel comfortable. Â 3. They have good service. Â In 12 years I've never had a problem. Â 4. It's inexpensive. Â I am not a big spender. Â Normally I order a sandwich and house salad for around $4-5 a piece and am left very satisfied. Â The menu is a la carte, so you can spend more if you like. Â 5. THE FOOD is consistently excellent. Â My favorite entrees are either the tuna, pesto and feta sandwich, the JP's grilled cheese (not your normal grilled cheese), or the chicken poblano with a side of black beans corn salsa. Â I normally order the house salad with honey balsamic dressing to start. Â I'm picky with my salads and this is my fave. Â The leaves are dark green and plentiful, the shredded cheese is delicious, and the dressing is oh-so-yummy. Â I'm not big on appetizers (too fried and cheesy), but I do like brock's green pepper rings (they are dusted with powdered sugar). Â I've heard good things about other appetizers as well. Â The calamari is supposed to be excellent. Â
For all of these reasons, Murry's is the first restaurant I think of when I come home. Â It's a favorite amongst all of my acquaintance...great for dates or just a casual meal with friends. Â
My only warning: If you're looking for good conversation, don't sit near the piano on one of the nights when they play music. Â ;)
Here's my experience. I am (was) a regular at Murry's and loved the place. Â The last few times I went there the food was good but the service was horrendous. Â Three of us waited 40 minutes for a table. Â We were then escorted to a high "bar" table placed in the hallway to the restrooms and right outside the kitchen doors. Â Obviously the table was placed there for busy times to turn more tables. Â When we arrived at the table I looked at the host and said you're kidding right? Â He replied in a very snobby fashion. Â I told him we would like to be seated at a more appropriate table and he replied you'll have to wait a long time. Â It was already 7:00 and we took the table and climbed into the uncomfortable chairs. Â In order for the water glasses to be filled the water guy had to step out of the way of people going and coming to the bathroom in order to have enough room to serve us. Â Our waitress arrived and was not friendly at all. Â She took our order and that's the last time we saw her until our check arrived. Â She didn't serve the food or come over to make sure everything was okay. Â I am a very nice person and always start the tip at 20% because I know waiters have a tough job. Maybe it's too much to expect a friendly serving staff these days....the food is always awesome but that's no excuse for rudeness....
Review Source:One of my favorite places EVER! Â It's not expensive like everyone says--if you order the right thing. Â I always love the blue chips cheese bread and of course a carafe of their amazing house red. Â Also, the rotating dessert list is always good, especially when they have mousse on the menu! Â Jazzy music and friendly service make for a nice casual dinner with friends or a date.
Review Source:I was originally going to give it two stars but felt a little bad. Â The dim lighting, live Jazz piano performances, and jazz memorabilia decor deserve 5 stars. Â I loved the place! Â That is until the food arrived.
I don't love the a la carte scheme. Â As mentioned below, each item tends to be unnecessarily large. Â Also the menu is vague and does not explain the plates well at all. Â The food itself was not so great. Â I went with a group of 5 and I think my salmon, fetta pesto sandwich was the only true hit, and even so I wasn't THAT impressed. Â Thankfully the waitress told me not to get the eggplant sandwich and suggested this one saying the other was not flavorful. Â I can't imagine how bad it must have been...
The french dip sandwich fell apart immediately and had to be eaten with a fork and knife. The burger was just that. Â Nothing special. Â The seared ahi tuna was about a half a pound of very bland and kind of dry sushi grade tuna. Â My friend began taking the pesto and fetta from my sandwich to accompany her ahi. Â Last but not least, the linguini with shrimp, clams and mushrooms was nothing out of this world. Â I was not impressed with the calamari either. Â The batter was bland and the calamari did not taste fresh.
All in all, this place has the atmosphere down, and now needs to focus on improving their menu. Â Not worth going without live music in my opinion, so call ahead.
A little on the pricey side, but for a night out, definitely worth it. Â The most surprising thing, and the item that everyone should try, is the bell pepper rings. Â They're battered and fried like onion rings, but are then dusted with powdered sugar. Â Sounds gross, but is yuuuuummy. Â
Despite going here several times, I have yet to have heard any jazz, so I can't comment there, but even without music, Murry's gives off a special vibe. Â One time, the place was full of teenagers dressed to the nines. Â Turns out it was prom night and kids from out of town were driving in to have dinner before the dance. Â They had fun, we had fun, and we'll be back!
Although I've never been there when there was live music, the food and the dim atmosphere are enough to attract me - be sure to try the fried green peppers that are covered with powdered sugar, or one of their desserts of the evening.
I don't know about the cigarette smoke - the smoking section has long been relegated to a separate upstairs room and I've never been bothered by it.
