I went here on 7-5-13 11:00 pm'sh. Â I bought one lagunitas ipa for $5.50, afterwards my friends met me here, he bought a pitcher of guiness for $14 (this particular size is a little smaller than the average pitcher). Â My friend mentioned there's karaoke on Friday evenings, so as I entered the bar, this kj seems familiar and she called my name, I knew she was Stella, (she has a decent amount of songs, although she needs to download more). Â My friend and I sang a couple of songs and left.
Review Source:Basically my favorite bar ever. Wooden panels, awkwardly quiet at times, with a dog and a shifty looking old guy drinking alone in the corner. Sometimes the game is on, and the bartenders are always making strange or friendly conversation with the clientele. Solid line-up of beers on tap, and as I recall 8 dollar shots of patron. I once dropped by three weeknights in a row and almost felt like a regular. This bar is breathing some old eccentricity, but the vibe is good. Go to chill, or go with people you really want to talk to and will make conversation with.
Review Source:Was in there today. Â Feels like going back in time on that street. Â Very small town friendly. Â And I've got to give a shout out to the wonderful bartender, I think her name is Sandra. Â Beautiful and friendly...a dangerous combination! Â Good luck on that first million, Sandra. Â I'm certain that you'll get there!
Review Source:Me and a group of friends dared trek in here again after drinking considerably elsewhere.
People here STARE a lot.
Got a really unfriendly vibe. "Racist" ass Newell's has become something of an inside joke among a big group of my friends.
If San Bruno were to have KKK meetings, it'd probably be at Newell's.
Maybe they changed ownership.... again?
I'm giving this Newell's 4 stars since I always come out laughing from this place. The first time I visited this place my husband and I were greeted by a huge black dog at the door with a paper towel in its mouth, we were like "what the hell!" We then continued to walk in to find the most interesting group of people, an old lady who looked like a total bar whore, some nerdy looking guys who probably work for Cisco or YouTube nearby, a pretty descent looking chic with tattoos as the bartender and a group of three slightly overweight dudes (one was crying). Â By the end of the night one of their nerdy guys was kissing the old lady, it was super gross but funny as hell!
The second time we visited this place, there was another dog with its handicapped owner and plenty men that looked like they just finished a construction job. The old bar lady was also there but this time she wasn't getting it on with any nerdy computer geek. I'm pretty sure the guy that was crying the first time was also there but I couldn't really remember his face. Fridays are karaoke nights so of course we had to check it out, it was hilarious!!!
We will be going to this place again for sure!
Roxana
There's a girl by the name of Sandy who works here, she is the sweetest person my wife and I met in San Francisco. We had a lot of fun at this bar. Sandy knows how to make an awesome drink, she's friendly and super nice. We had a lot of fun talking to some of the drunken patrons at the bar too. We had a great experience and we can't thank Sandy enough for being so awesome. She knows how to make a straight up martini perfectly, and she is very attentive.Thank you!!!!
Review Source:So I'm going to give this place a 5 star all because of outstanding service.
The bartender Jack/Jacob? I'm know one of those is his name, but he's the chillest bartender I have ever met.
Super friendly, makes you feel very welcome. honestly, he's everything a bartender should be (unlike those made up chicks that wear heavy eye liner and vickie's secret bombshell bras to make their boobs look bigger). Instead of wasting his energy on trying to look amazing he just flaunts a personality of a super chill, dude (p.s.: try the White Gummy and Cookie Monster for those that have a sweet tooth ;)
Will definitely keep Newell's at the top of my local bar list that I will make a point to come to hopefully every time I come back home from San Jose!
Stay chill Newell's, the Bar's World needs more pubs like you!
This place looks like a dump from the outside, but it's not so bad inside. It reminds me of an old school saloon like the one from Back to the Future Part III. It's mainly full of older locals. There's a pool table in the back with darts. There's really nothing special about this bar. It's just a hole in the wall in a grimey area.
Review Source:I always see this place when I drive through downtown San Bruno. For some reason the pirate-esque, shore town, walk the plank-type exterior has always piqued my interest but I never had an opportunity to go inside.
That all changed when my friend told me to meet him there for a drink and the hockey game.
I walk in and there's a tattoo'd rocker chick bartender, an old lady who knows everyone in the place with a smokers cough, 3 guys who look like they just got done working construction and... me. The stools are old and covered in black masking tape and it's pretty dilapidated inside. Of course, the standard juke box is included in this dive bar tour.
I order a beer and wait for my friend. Luckily there are several TV's and the game was already on. When my friend got there, we headed to the back room. It's a pretty nice sized room but overly mirrored, another bar which I suppose they use when busy, however, I also assume that was a LOOOONG time ago, a TV and 2 pool tables.
The people going in and out of there were classic dive bar personalities and basically I only would recommend this to those of you that are game for that atmosphere but, as dive bars go, this is a great one!
This bar is a total dive but it ROCKS!!! Â Wednesday night is my favorite night to go here because they have karaoke with Jose and the bartender, Dominic, is very attentive. Â Jose plays the best music in between songs and really gets the crowd into it. Â Drinks are cheap and well made. Â I've had fun here on Friday nights as well. Â I've also even gone in a couple times in the morning after getting off work (I work night shift and they open at 6am!). Â Their Bloody Mary's are the best!!! Â The people who usually frequent this bar are random, but everyone is always friendly. Â It's not everyone's favorite place, but I highly recommend this bar to people who enjoy dive bars and random fun nights out.
Review Source:C'mere & listen to me. Yez know who yez are. Thanks for looking at this review. Luck of the Irish to you!! Let's see here. Oh Bloody Hell!! Writing a review of a place of business (drinking) is hard to do. I don't remember a sh*te thing about it, fella.
(Pass a Guinness to myself, and now I'll remember).
Need for juice for the think tank. (pass another one, down it, pass another one, start a fight, win and down another one).
I remember it clearly now; as I remember memories of me as a wee child of Ireland. I spent a good portion of my childhood kneeling. I was with my cousins, Murphy O'Doyle, Harris McGuire, and little Miss Elizabeth Sullivan heading here on St. Patty's Day. I swam here upon after that, since I live close to it.
The pub is very colourful with Irish English, or Hiberno English type decors inside and outsides. It has a good ole feel. The lounge has a small dance floor, small slot machine, and two pool tables in the far room. The bathrooms are bleedin' dirty as hell. Â Restroom isn't a place to sleep.
The bar is pretty fekkin' ok, Â I drink beer from a longneck bottle because my doctor told me to. Lite beer is a punishment. the bartender is fun to chitchat with, and Irish!!! A sober Irishman is friendless -- or broke -- or dead. Â He isn't that, he knows his paint!! He's yer man! Not much food there, much of your food is boiled anyways.
Tend to get crowded at the bar and it's very quarters. The bar flys are kinda creepy, but most  are friendly, maybe too 'friendly'.
That's the key, good people. What are ya waiting for? Don't be a gobsh*te. Up the yard! Excuse me as I need the street light pole as a prosthetic device to help ne stand up.
Stopped in here the other night for a friend's birthday party. Living in South City, I've driven by Newell's many times, but by outside appearances have been reluctant to go in. Tell you what, I'm sure glad I did. I don't know if divey really describes the place, but it does have that vibe going on. Great beer selection with Lagunitas IPA on tap, really cool bartender, and pool tables in the back make this place a winner.
Review Source:I was introduced to Newell's via a bittersweet event, a going away party for a friend a few weeks ago. It's a kickback place that appears to have been at this corner of San Bruno for years and years. Not crowded at all during my visit. Very cool that the bartender that evening was Irish--I'm guessing this is a family run establishment. Don't expect a fancy ultramodern lounge or anything like that; it's a rather old-timey feel, modestly furnished place. Pool tables out back, I think it's a buck per game. I also was introduced to Irish cider, a first time for me. Â Good stuff! For a kick back place for a few drinks with friends, this is a great spot!
Review Source:Popped in here about 5:30 last night on a Friday. Â Other than my visit and review from a couple weeks ago, I haven't been here in ages, but was in the area today and this was convenient so I hooked up with my buddy for a drink. Â The place looked a little edgier than usual for some reason, not sure if thats the norm lately, but the bartender was cool and it was still a ton of fun. Â Everybody was having a good time and there didn't seem to be any trouble in here. Â Man, what a dive!!! Â Everyone was drinking heavily and although it was early, the place was in full swing. Â There was an especially rowdy group that was already totally hammered. Â Not sure if that was a bachelor party or people who worked together.
Got on the pool table and as always, had a total blast. Â Ended up playing an especially loud and fun guy named Greg who kept yelling, "This guys a hustler...he's hustling me...he's just messin' with me!!!" Â Was totally hilarious and we shot some great pool...the perfect ending to a long week and a nice start to the weekend. Â
Also, I wanted to say that in the back room, the table on the left side next to the sofa is the one to play on. Â The one on the right side has bumpers that are totally messed up and dead. Â Another added bonus to the table on the left side is that the video camera is focused on it (only a third of the other table is in the scene), so people at the bar can watch you on tv as you run the table over and over. Â Pretty cool! :) Â
During the time I was there and as I was driving off, people that remembered me from before were really happy to see me and kept coming up to say hello...my good friend Bob joked that I was the Pied Piper of Drunks. Â Fun times!
After years of driving by this place, finally journeyed in! Â Yeah, it's definitely not the newest or chicest place to go! it's a DIVE, but in the best sense of the word! Â Very eclectic mix of people and yes, as some other Yelpers pointed out...definitely everyone was having a great time and "very well served!" Â Â Each time I had driven by (even when it was "Forty's Pub" for a couple of years) Â I always saw much older people (sorry) hanging around out in front smoking a cig, etc. Â Was pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the group, older, middle and younger ages, nice mix of ethncities, seemed like a real neighborhood joint and everyone knew each other, but as a first timer, still felt welcome! Â The male bartender was funny and yes a bit tipsy, but not too tipsy to serve up one DIVINE Manhattan with Makers Mark (the ONLY way to have a Manhattan, in my book) and $6.50!! Â Â The bathroom WAS pretty messy/trashed, which is why I'm only awarding this place 4 stars! Â Clean your BATHROOM folks, puhleez!!! Â
So, in short, this place would be on my radar more if I lived down in SSF/San Bruno and wanted a really casual place to go for some drinks...but as I live in SF, I can't see myself making a special point of coming here, but if in San Bruno again  I'll be by!
Salud!!!
15 years in San Bruno - finally made it to Newalls. Â Its a nice local joint with friendly regulars, great juke box. Â Its changed hands a couple of times of late so previous references to dingy and dark were nowhere to be found. Â Drinks were great; so was the bathroom. Â Lots of different groups, young old, new regular seemed to be there.
Review Source:went in tonight with an old friend. awesome karaoke good music in between. the bartender wasn't very friendly which loses a star. however he carded my old wrinkly face so he semi redeemed himself. the place was cute had a compfy feel to it. lots of regulars and seemed very clickish. not to many friendly folks which loses another star. however the drinks were cheap and had a good sized dance floor. im down for a 2nd try.
Review Source:Newell's is the quintessential local bar. Â Earlier in the evening, it's the typical hangout. Â Later in the evening, especially on weekends, people are wasted, laughing, dancing to the random band they have in there. Â I haven't seen anyone act like an asshole either. Â Most there drink beer and other low maintenance stuff, which I sometimes go for. Â But I can also order a Grey Goose martini, and no one will look at me funny or roll their eyes. Â I appreciate that.
