Best live band night spot in town. Dancing is ok. Not the place for your 21st B-day party but good for getting out after 9pm, good music and people still awake at that hour. Pool table and a few seats outside.

To Ms W You don't have to take the stairs... There is an elevator... and us older crowd love it. As a matter of fact it caters to any age group. I work the door periodically. My family owns the place so you might say I am partial to the club. But I am also  "seasoned" and feel my review to be somewhat educated, honest and forthright.   There are nights that we have groups of the 20 year age groups in there and they have a great time.  We know how to celebrate birthdays and reunons of any size groups! We will even reserve tables. If you love to dance to a wide variety of the best bay area bands and just have a good time without an agenda....ahem....Broadway is a great place. And because everybody gets up and dances every song, of course the dance floor is packed---reflects great dance music! Isn't that what you are going out to do?? You will see most people post it needs a bigger dance floor. I laugh at this because not many clubs around have any bigger dance floors. And to Stewart H ... why in the hell would you go back three times if you hated it so much??  lol

And Waldly L Glad you enjoy Number One--  Hope you made it on New Years Eve.... Sage played!! What a party!!!

The Crew is family and welcoming--bouncer never has to bounce and is very friendly--crowd is never out of control-trust me(Stewart) As far as rude patrons...amazing you would say that... it's a place where "everybody knows your name"....

It is a wonderful place--cabs are always out front and our responsible clients take them home! Trust me I am asked to call them every night I am at that door!

    So It's Called NUMBER ONE!!!!

we , my wife and i have gone here 3 times this last year and we now realize that this place is old, way to loud, extremely rude patrons, a very crowed dance floor so you are always getting banged into, and the crowed is somewhat out of control. We could not recommend this place to anyone we know. This place needs a larger dance area and serious crowd control. If there were any type of medical emergency or fire there would be a potential for injury or worse as people were trying to evacuate.

Great Bands but get there early.

    Not for the 20's crowd.

Don't drink to much or the trip up and/or down the long long stairs will be very scary.

    Very small.

"I think we walked into a Viagra commercial..."

... not in a bad way, but there were definitely way more AARP cards than fake ID's inside.  The crowd was mostly retiree couples or groups of friends, thankfully with no solitary creepers or prowling wild cats.

The staff and bartender were super friendly.   He knew how to make Chocolate Cake Shots (hmm, I wonder if he'd make us LC's), and the Lake Tahoe Rum Runner (~$10 including tip) was good, albeit slightly different from my usual Caribbean one.

There are live bands Wed-Sat ($10 late night cover), and that Friday's band, The Cocktail Monkeys, was exceptional.  The tiny dance floor was poppin' - think: the kind of dancing you see on a typical cruise ship dance floor.   We briefly got our groove back as best as we could without getting reprimanded for "that kind of dirty dancing."  But the real show is people-watching - I'm sure someone got lucky that night ... possibly with Viagra.

Odd place, but not a bad time if you don't take it too seriously.  Some of the bands that play here are pretty decent and there is some very entertaining people-watching to be done.

Also seems like it might be a good place to look if you are in search of a sugar momma.

    3 & 1/2 stars for #1 broadway.

i have to say that i don't think i've EVER seen so much off-beat, awkward, schizophrenic, seizure-like, frenetic and un-sexy dancing in one place in my life.  EVER.  it was abso-freaking-lutely HILARIOUS.  that said, these same rhythmically-challenged people were very, very nice and fun (if not a little scary on the [tiny] dance floor).  from the door lady to the bartender and waitresses, to the other patrons and the band, everyone seemed really chill and just out to have a good time.  i liked that.

things to know before you go [good & otherwise] -

live music* and the cover is only $10!

the dance floor is TINY and butts right up to the surrounding tables.  hold onto your drink if you are at one of these perimiter tables b/c something - your drink, you, your chair, and/or the table - WILL get knocked at some point. (see above description of "dancing.")

there are not a lot of tables and the bar is not that big/doesn't have a ton of barstools either, so be prepared to stand for stretches of time if you do not want to brave the dance floor.  there's a nice [but somewhat narrow] wrap-around deck outside though, if you smoke or don't mind the smokers.  ther'es also a pool table in the back corner, away from the dance floor/common area and i think a couple of seats over there.

this is NOT the place you go to in your club best or take anyone under 30 (40+?) or expecting a 'club' experience.  (c'mon people, this is los gatos.) leave your stilettos at home.  heels and dresses seemed to be the exception to the rule - the rule being jeans just short of being classified as mom-jeans, worn with 'sexy' (fitted and/or with plunging necklines) tops.  very soccer-moms-night-out/cougartastic attire.  several men had the full on seinfeld look going with their dad-jeans, tucked-in shirt, and sneakers.  nuff said.

    -----------------------------------------

cute little place.  very nice people.  good music.  i wouldn't go back of my own volition, but if i am in town again and someone else wants to go, i might tag along.  maybe.  (still scared of the "dancers," though.)

*i wish i could remember the name of the band that was playing the night we were there.  they were really good.  some 70's covers, some michael jackson, some 90's stuff.  great sound.

Well, if it were not for some of my favorite bands playing here I do not think i would return to this bar. You pay a $10 cover and can not find a table. The dance floor is small and narrow like dancing on a squashed sardine can.

The staff not very friendly except for the great man with the ponytail, very busy and friendly.

We went to see SAGE and we love this band, Tower Of Power like with a great horn section.

I really want to see PST and they play here regularly, bummer. Also Los Gatos is almost an hour drive for us so not really worth it.

Gonna have to watch and see when these bands play better venues. Like when SAGE plays at McGrails winery, now that's off the hook.

Sorry Broadway's not my better option for going dancing.

I came here the first time with a girlfriend who felt that after my divorce I needed to go out dancing. I had a great time. But the real fun was the next time. I had dinner with a different girlfriend but she bailed just before it was time for the dancing. I considered going home, but really wanted to continue the night.

I'm not normally comfortable going out alone, but I braved it and headed down to #1 Broadway alone. It was still a little early so the place wasn't over crowded. I was met at the pool table by a group of people playing pool. A woman promptly introduced herself to me and introduced me to everyone else there. I had a great time and met a lot of great people.

Yes, its an older crowd, but all the comments about cougars and panthers strike me as odd. Perhaps thats how we all look to the younger crowd!!

Definitely a fun place, warm and welcoming bartenders, a good crowd, excellent music and the ability to take your drink outside and enjoy some fresh air!

Wheelchair accessible via the elevator.  I guess you should call first to make sure it is working, but it has worked every time I've ever been there.

I hadn't been to #1 in over 5 years, but just HAD TO SHOW Zak the beautiful stained glass cypress tree and the zippy & casual atmosphere of the bar.  I told him it was mostly for the "older" crowd, but we are well on our way - so why not drop in and have some fun, right?

On our way up the stairs we hear great tunes and then stop in our tracks when we see the poster for a $10 cover.  ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT!

"Do you KNOW the Cocktail Monkeys?" he asked

I kinda gave him one of those innocent angelic confused expressions and then shrugged and said "$10 isn't THAT bad, The COCKTAIL MONKEYS!!!  it's gonna be fun!"

    and in we went!

It was PACKED and there was absolutely nowhere to sit... & all empty spaces were taken for standing room too.  So, we squeaked our way over to the bar and ordered a couple drinks.  We ended up finding a tiny spot to lean against the wall near the dance floor to enjoy our cocktails and tap along with the band.  Good times!

If you LOVE people watching like I do?  You will adore this place!  After an hour of drinks and watching we got CAUGHT!  A woman came over and told us enough of the watching it was about time we participate!  eeee!

Reluctantly we stood and jiggled a little.  I tried to tell the woman that we had been drinking wine at the LG Wine Walk and walking all day in Los Gatos and just wanted to enjoy a drink and a sit.. She wasn't going for that and quickly reminded us that SHE had been up dancing to the Cocktail Monkeys all afternoon and that THIS was their second gig of the day.  haha DANCE WE DID!!!

I will always have great things to say about this swanky little getaway at the edge of LG & you can bet if I see the Cocktail Monkeys again - I'll come inside and shake my groove thang!

    PROS:
I love coming to this neighborhood bar, I always have a good time. The drinks are good, the bartenders keep you entertained and they have awesome live bands that come there to play. They also have a pool table for those who don't like to dance but listen to great music.

    CONS:
The place is a tad small, and you definitely want a table to sit at or at least have a place to put your purse while you're getting down to the funky beats. They also don't allow any drinks on the dance floor, I'm sure some drunkie ruined that for the rest of us by spilling their drink all over the dance floor.

FINAL ANSWER: GO! but GO early and get yourself a table!

I'm with Waidy L. #1 Broadway doesn't hide the fact that when they have a full house they have a full house. There are windows all around the patio -- people should take a look inside before they attempt to go in have a good time. Look before you leap and you won't have to use your 6' aggressive loud self when you are out on the town. I recommend you go to Shabooms there is plenty of room for people like you....

I went to #1 Broadway on a Saturday night.  The band was SAGE, a 6 people band (guitar, keyboard, sax, trumpet, trombone, and a vocalist).  They played mostly 70's that night.  The music was great.  The service was good and the people was nice.  I stayed for two sets and there was not one song I didn't dance to.

Most of the people goes there (that night, anyway) were 35+ as far as I can see.  There is a long table of girls celebrating a Birthday.  Some people hanged out on the patio drink and dance.

If you like dancing and never been to #1 Broadway, I highly recommend it.  The atmosphere and environment is just great!

I came on Friday night to check out my co-worker's band.  The Hip Street Band.  I had a hard time finding this place since it is located at the end of Santa Cruz Ave.  Once I did, it was easy since you would follow the music.  The crowd was older but the band was wonderful.  The singer was great.  They placed alot of 70s and current songs by PCD and Alicia Keys.  It is nice to hear live music every so often and just watch people dance.  Good place to just hang out.  Had alot of fun.

The momentum of our Girls Night Out (GNO) last Saturday, screamed to a hault when we arrived at #1.  While walking up Main we got excited when we heard the great music coming from upstairs and could not wait to get to dancing...BUT upon entering we were each charged a $10(!!!) cover at the door, which we paid reluctantly.  It was 10PM and there was not one table or barseat available, so we stood, and stood.  I think the worst was that there was no A/C, extremely stuffy and VERY loud (not the band but the people chatting) it felt like an over-crowded airport lounge somewhere in the middle of a sweltering desert.  We could not stand it any longer and left after only 20 mins.

A great live band every Friday and Saturday (Thursday too, but I haven't checked it out).  Ranges from blues, to motown, with a bit of latin and contemporay thrown in.

People are generally friendly, and there to have a good time.

Always packed by 10:30 - so if you need a little room on the dance floor, get there by 9:30.

Love it.  Great Music and older crowd.  It is so nice to go out and not be bomb barded by little 20 year olds with fake ID's.    GREAT FUN and friendly bartenders.  Highly reccomend it!!!!

Packed and lively bar for older folks, with live music!

I had a very interesting night here.  I was meeting a friend at Mountain Charley's, but was not familiar with downtown Los Gatos so I ended up wandering over to Number One Broadway by myself.  I asked a nice guy (probably in his 40s) outside if he knew where Mountain Charley's was, and he guided me down the street.  As we walked, he commented that Number One Broadway is not the place to go for someone young like me, and that was my first idea of the place.

In the end, I met up with my friend and we still ended up at Number One Broadway.  Why, you ask?  Mountain Charley's and 180's were far too loud/crowded for us to have a good conversation.  We wanted to find Blackwatch, but ended up walking in the wrong direction and ended up here.  There was a $10 cover to get in, and the place was loud/packed, to our dismay.  For the rest of the night, we chatted out on the balcony with our drinks, enjoying the view of Los Gatos.

    1.  Crowd: obviously, this place is for the older crowd. I was definitely the youngest person in the place. Even my friend, who is 30 y.o., felt out of place. Predominantly white, middle/upper-class crowd in their  30s to early 50s.

[See Katie T.'s review for a disclaimer and useful definitions for the terms to come.]
Now beware, if you are a young woman and you happen to cross paths with an older "cougar" on the prowl, you better get out of her way! I accidentally bumped into this older lady, who to her benefit, may have been slightly drunk, but she gasped loudly with the most ridiculous look on her face, even after I apologized a couple times. Waiting in line for the bathroom, do not make eye contact with anybody! Especially if they're drunk, they will be ready for a catfight with a poor little "kitten".  Haha, I am slightly joking, but seriously watch out.  If you are a young man/woman, do not make eye contact unless you want to get hit on by a cougar/panther, or a dirty look from a panther/cougar.

Hey, besides that everyone looked like they were having a good time and getting along...

    2.  The setup: it's upstairs, with one large room that contains the bar, several tables and chairs, a small dancing area in front of a small stage, where the band plays.  There's a pool table in the back corner, and a narrow balcony to catch a breather at.

    3.  Other odds and ends: The band played covers of mostly pop oldies, upbeat feel-good music. The drinks were on the pricier end ($11 for two vodka-tonics). There's only one stall for the ladies room.  The bartender was pretty nice.

Overall, the music and vibe was great. I'll probably come back here in about 10 years, when I am older, richer, and wiser.

4 STARS for the "DRIVE!" Sunday parties once a month during summer (5pm-midnight):  Great house music, good-looking and friendly crowd.

2 STARS for the drinks: Cocktails come in tiny plastic cups, and a plain DIET COKE IS $3.75!!!

My advice: Bring a bottle and drink it in the car.  Too ghetto?  Spend your money then, I don't care =)

Before reading this I must apologize to all who are over 30 because this might offend, but it needs to be said.

    Some definitions you might need:

Cougar: An older single female who frequents bars with the intention of going home with a much younger male. Common occurrence is they are pretty fake looking (boobs, tans, hair, nails.. the works) overly aggressive and as long as you don't have your eyes set on the same guy nice enough to make small talk with.

Panther. An older single male who frequents bars with the intention of going home with a much younger female. Common occurrence is they are full of lines trying to get you to go home with them and will often call attention to some expensive new toy they bought. Think the old cliche of boss trying to date his 19 year old secretary. Yikes!
My first encounter with this bar was with my parents (yes, I hang out with my parents) to see one of their friend's bands play. They hands down rocked. I've gone back to see them every time they are in town because they do blues, rock, and anything else perfectly. If you ever see Clean Slate booked there you have to check it out.

Like I said don't get offended but this is all from my experiences:

The first thing I think when I hear the name "Number One Broadway" is cougar and panther central. Try not to take offense to this, but the place is swarming with the 30 and up crowd and they are all on the prowl. It is humorous to sit back and watch people use ancient pick up lines or even to see somebody older then my mom get told they have had too much.
The drinks are reasonably priced, but if you are looking for the latest craze, I think it is the lemon drop this week, you're not going to find it here. They offer some wines, beers, and the traditional drinks like Jack and Coke, but other then that you are going to be short on luck.
The place is usually packed when they have good cover bands so if you are going to go you are going to want to stake out a table. Whatever you do don't leave it unattended it or you'll never sit down again.
There is a pool table in the back but the place is small and with a big crowd it can make a game relatively impossible to play. My major complaint is that some of the clientele need to learn to keep their hands to themselves. I know this is true with almost any bar, but in my experience some of them just didn't understand the word "no" or "taken."
We went last Friday and some cougar tried to flirt with my BF while his arm was around me. This wouldn't have been so annoying if a panther hadn't done the same thing to me two seconds before. Not sure if it was just these two people or if the vibe is just a aggressive, either way I am not and that was my only complaint.
Go have fun, and if Clean Slate is playing I will see you there!

Lots of cover bands and an older crowd rule this bar on the far end of Santa Cruz ave. Not my kind of scene but the people who do go here seem to be having quite a bit of fun. Even when it's dead at the rest of the bars on LG this place seems to be happening.
