I would say 5 stars for the brewery and 4 stars for the restaurant. We took the brewery tour. Only $20 for a half pint of four excellent beers ranging from a summer ale to a classic IPA.
They have a brick oven so we went for the pizza. It was good. We had duck and caramelized onion for one.
The atmosphere was relaxing - a nice low key break from the main strip. The only complaint is the peanuts - they were stale.
My go to pizza place on the Vineyard! They are a brewery and have a great pub atmosphere. (Peanut allergy alert! They have peanuts and shells on the floor.) The beers are usually very good according to my friends who know beer and my limited samplings.
The pizza is legitimately made in a wood fired brick oven! I ordered a chicken pesto pizza this past visit and it was delicious! Other favorites of mine include the roasted duck, white clam, and Italian sausage alfredo.
Their house made clam chowder is definitely what I consider above average; however, it is not the best that I've had on the island.
Very good food above average beer they brew themselves. It is kind of a small place so expect a wait.
Not sure if this is normal for them or not but it was crazy hot in there during my visit. It was a 80 degree day outside and it was well over 90 inside (every time a door opened it felt like the y turned on the a/c!) so keep that in mind if you walk inside and it feels a bit warm. I would have given 4 or 5 stars if not for the fact we sweated through dinner.
Offshore is a great place for local, delicious beer. And that's about all. Aside from the pretty decent pizzas, the food is poor quality and overpriced. The calamari are fried rubber bands, the hummus plate is a huge pool of putty-colored mush, the vegetables are frozen. Their food comes off a Sysco truck.
Though not advertised, they offer all beers in half-pint sizes, which is great.
Come for a beer and peanuts, but don't stay for dinner.
You can't go wrong with the Offshore! Â The food it always delicious, servings are generous, and there is always a good variety of great beer options. Â The seasonal brews and ever changing specials keep things interesting year round! Â If you have a peanut allergy definately skip this place but if not enjoy the easy going, throw your peanut shells on the floor, kind of atmosphere. Â Offshore can also boast something that is becoming hard to find on the island: Great service!
Review Source:Good pizza and good beer. Â We sat down around early dinner time with not much of an appetite for food but a big appetite for beer. Â Our waitress didn't make us feel rushed to order as we tasted our way through the beer list and eventually decided to try to roma pizza with truffle oil (YUM). Given we were a bit buzzed by the time our pizza came out, it was delicious.
Also good to know: the general store next door sells Offshore Ale Co shirts, bottle openers, etc.
Three of us enjoyed a hearty meal at Offshore Ale Co. on a cool, rainy Sunday night in May. We spent a wait of about 15 minutes eating the peanuts in the shell that you scoop out of a barrel. Once seated at our table, we experienced prompt and helpful service from our waiter. We skipped appetizers, as we wished to leave room for desserts. Two of our meals were from the daily specials - pan-fired-sole with lemon and capers, and a gumbo dish with cornbread. Both were very good and our waiter helped us with recommendations for beers to accompany these entrees: the Offshore Amber Ale and the East Chop Lighthouse Ale, respectively. Â The third entree ordered was the Meatloaf to Make Mom Proud, which our daughter liked very much, but it was HUGE, so she had about half of it packed to go. For dessert we chose to share the dessert mug, which that day was key lime pie - Â very tasty, with a strong lime flavor. We also ordered the chocolate chip cookies to take with us. These were very good too.
The atmosphere was lively, the service was good, the food was tasty, and we were glad we chose Offshore Ale for our last dinner before leaving Martha's Vineyard.
Offshore Ale Co was off the hook food wise! Â Super yum and lots of fun!
The decor is pub-like. A giant barrel of peanuts when you walk in. You are welcome to take as much as you want. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They made great recommendations.
We had the grilled brie, truffle fries, pizza (for the girls) and duck pizza for us. It was all delicious. For dessert the hubby and I shared the brownie cup and the girls had a chocolate pudding concoction with gummy worms.
They also had live music playing while we were there.
Would definitely recommend and come back.
Been to the Oak Bluffs a half dozen times this year, and this is still our favorite restaurant in town.  Great beer, laid-back atmosphere. and very good food.  Brick over pizza is excellent, as are the veggie burgers, pub salad, salmon, mussels appetizer, chicken quesadilla  ... really can't go wrong. Â
Beer there is excellent. Â The Menemsha Pale Ale is the sweet spot for me - doesn't get any better than this!
I feel like anytime I order a glass of Zin or Cab in a place known for beer I get punished. Â Day old bottle of wine served at above room temperature in a small glass. Â How come the beer guys get large mugs and I pay more for a child's size glass of vino? Â Punishment, that's why. Â
Anyhow, service was friendly, but really slow. Â Hamburger wasn't anything special. Â Fries were above average. Â Another culinary purgatory, stagnant in vast, expansive realm of mediocrity. Â Had I been drinking beer and eating Pizza maybe this would have been a 4 Star. Â But based on what I had, the review stands.
Awesome brewpub. Without question the best beer on the island. One of the best craft breweries in Massachusetts, flying a bit under the radar, but they are growing slowly and steadily. They will blow up in the next couple of years.
Had a great brewery tour and dinner here. The owner/brewer/pizzamaker is super friendly and down-to-earth. The head bartender and our waiter were also very friendly.
Each of their beers is excellent. Well thought-out. Most of their tap lines connect right to a barrel in the back, where it was brewed a few weeks prior. Fresh and delicious. Their Octoberfest is particularly awesome, smoky and malty without being too sweet.Traditional beers, but absolutely willing to strike out on their own.
Had their muscles, cooked perfectly, and broth was delicious. Their buffalo chicken is also the real deal. Tender and meaty. The NY strip and lobster rolls were also very good, and the steak was cooked exactly to order. And the chocolate cake is made with their stout, so if you pair it with a half pint of their stout, it's incredible.
Very good food, very friendly people, and excellent beers. My only regret is that they aren't onshore.
Wow, I've really been slacking in my reviews. We spent a day on the Vineyard about a month-and-a-half ago, and ended up eating lunch at the Offshore Ale Co.
I had done some restaurant research prior to the trip, so Offshore was on my list as a place to try.
We found it using the GPS on my phone - it's up a little side street and I don't think we would have stumbled upon it. We walked in and they were busy, but there were some open tables. It took about 10-15 minutes before we were actually seated (on the cute little patio). We helped ourselves to the free peanuts, but couldn't find a bowl for them, so my husband ended up coming out with handfuls.
Our waiter was definitely overworked, but still enthusiastic and friendly. He was pretty new but tried to be helpful. I asked what veggies were in the veggie wrap, but he wasn't sure. I went with it and although it was tasty, I was disappointed that the menu (which is not online, sadly) did not mention anything about hummus!! Luckily, I love hummus because there was a LOT of it.
I can't remember what my husband got (I think a club sandwich?) but we both enjoyed our meals and really liked the homemade chips.
Overall, it wasn't the best meal I've ever had, but it was pleasant. It's definitely pricey, but it's the VIneyard so it's to be expected.
We didn't try the beers, but I'm sure they are delish!
This is my go-to spot for brews in MV.
Throw peanuts, drink beer and relax inside or on the patio. Great location and cute campy furnishings. Pale ale and IPA are great. We tried lunch for the first time, food is okay. Had a fried fish sandwich and the breading fell right off, but overall it was pretty tasty, typical pub grub.
No flights but let you try the beer for free. Peanuts shells on the floor. Didn't try the food. Hefenwizen was good, pale ale good, blueberry, bleh. Service kinda slow.
I've been visiting the island since I was a kid, and never knew this place existed until now. Apparently it's been around since 1997. Well sheeeet. I guess you should go here is you're a tourist? Like everything in MV?
I wish I could write a NEW review and not just be permitted to update my old review of Offshore Ale! It is after all summer of 2012 and things in a great restaurant change up and I'd like to review it for the newness of it.
Ok.. Dessert was Key Lime Mug! To die for. Always start with dessert, if you don't eat it first at least review it first.
I had the Salmon on a salad and I do think it's the best Salmon I have had. I love the glaze that was on it and couldn't stop eating it. My son had his perennial favorite, chicken quesadilla and my daughter had the chicken pesto pizza which I had to comment to the waitress that it was the best pizza she's had there in ages.
Service was great as usual, wine was great and the beer is simply the best brewed on the island.
I'll be back. I'll be back a lot this summer!

This is one of my favorite place to go drinking at on the Island because they make their own beer which tasted pretty good. My 2 favorite one is the IPA and the Hopgoddess which are both above the 6% level. You can eat all of the peanuts you want for free and throw the shell directly to the ground. I haven't had a chance to try their food yet so I can't really say anything about that. The employee are extremely friendly and very talkative if you need to asked them anything. This place is always pack on every single day that they are open. They are open year around and support everything local which is great in my book.
I was in Cape Cod and Boston for the long weekend and this was the best meal I had during my 4-day trip. Mussel for starter, a burger for me, and the Portuguese seafood stew for my boyfriend. The mussels were cooked perfectly and were a great price for the portion (about $13 for a massive black pot FILLED with them).
Love, love, love this place
I love this place.....the burgers are wonderful, the chips are homemade and usually come out warm. The wait staff is awesome and the home brews are as good as they get. Unusual variety of good pizza as well. Try the double garlic pizza (it's actually triple).
Don't forget to grab a bowl of peanuts on your way in the door. Self-serve appetizers! :)
It's a fun place and they are open year round which is a BIG deal on MV.
Offshore is one of my favorite places to go in the off season. My fiance is a huge fan of the beer there. There is a lot of variety of beer, his favorite is the hop goddess. I usually go there for the atmosphere and food because I don't like beer. They have peanuts when you walk in and you just throw the shells on the floor. My favorite is when they do the wings and oyster deal in the off season.
There pizza is fantastic. They have a brick oven open in the back that you can see. It is a very thin crust but really is flavorful. Their burgers are very good also. My favorite salad is their offshore special salad( I think it is called something else though). It has Bibb lettuce, pears, walnuts, and blue cheese. Its really really good.
It is not a big place so if you don't get a booth be prepared to basically be at the same table as the people next to you. The tables are spaced very close so you can hear everything about the person next to you.
If I could take Offshore and move it from the Vineyard to down the street from my house, I would a) be stronger than any man who ever lived and b) probably get kicked out of my house for coming home with the smell of their delicious pale ale, competent IPA, tasty veggie burgers and homemade fries on my breath all the time. Â Which would be fine, because I could make a living doing feats of strength for denizens at Offshore's bar and retire for the afternoon/evening under one of their wooden benches.
I would probably end up doing something about the peanuts on the floor, though, because sleeping on those just ain't comfortable.
This was a fantastic little brewery on the vineyard. It was exactly what an old school bar should be- dark and comfortable- peanut shells on the floor.... Our waitress was great, and we had a great time chatting to some of the locals.
I didn't try the food at all.
The beers were all very good- flavorful and they had a good variety. Something for everyone.
Not really sure what to give this place. Don't you think it is weird when you walk into a restaurant and you can't smell a single spice or a single piece of food cooking? No aroma at all of anything??? Ya me too. And that's what Offshore was like. I was so confused. Even when people ordered their pizzas or their burgers or anything directly next to me, I maybe got a short waft of fries in the air, but nothing else. So strange.
So we didn't get food, just beer. The beer was okay and the service at least was pretty attentive. Have I had better beer? Sure. But for Martha's Vineyard this place really does have character and is a good spot to just hang out in the small bar area. Plus it is family friendly too. With all of those peanut shells on the ground it also just makes it a little more fun. But I am still confused why I couldn't smell any of the food ha So maybe just stick to beer.
Though we came during the recent hurricane, you wouldn't have known from our experience at Offshore Ale Company. Â The beer selection, which included a large list of local-brewed beers, was awesome. Â Between my boyfriend and I we ended up trying 4 different beers, all better than the next. Â
The restaurant had a comfortable atmosphere, partially due to the free peanuts with shells that you throw on the floor. Â The staff was friendly and knowledgable about the beers and food and gave some great recommendations. Â The baked brie was delicious with some roasted garlic and pesto and the wood-grilled pizza was amazing. Â The crust was super thin and just enough to support the delicious toppings. Â
I would certainly recommend this place to couples or small groups. Â The space inside is small, but in a cozy way. Â The outdoor space wasn't open due to the terrible weather, but certainly worth trying out on a second visit!
I usually come for the oysters, but this time I came for the mussels. The delicious, beery, salty and sweet mussels. Droooooool...
Offshore Ale Co is the perfect brew pub for Martha's Vineyard: it's laid-back, no-frills, and a little rough around the edges. If you're looking for refinement, I can't say this is the place. If your looking for delicious, fresh seafood and fabulous beer, I can say with absolute certainty that this IS the place, kids.
Like I said, I love love LOVE their oysters. During the off season, you can get 'em for a buck each on a designated night of the week with your beer and a basket of $0.25 wings. No joke. The fries are killer, too. I go for the classic, but they make a parmesan-truffle version that's out of this world good. There are super-fresh salads of all sorts, great pizza and veggie options as well. Basically, whatever you're looking for, they've got you covered.
They brew all their own beers and write out what's available that day on a big chalkboard over the bar. My favorite is their IPA - totally delicious and refreshing. There are huge barrels of whole peanuts you can fill a basket with, just keep in mind the shells go on the floor, so the whole place is carpeted with peanut shells most of the time.
This is a great spot for locals and tourists alike - grab a beer after a day at the beach, or cosy up in one of their booths on a cold winters' evening.
AMBIANCE- 2/5 stars
i am not a fan of the whole throwing peanuts all over the dang place trend. i don't even think i could've handled sitting inside. i find it aesthetically painful. but a plus? free peanuts. buckets and buckets worth. no one even seemed to judge when my friend filled his pockets with them for a ferry snack. TIP: fill up your purses, pocketbooks and crevices with peanuts.
BEER- 5/5 stars
we all enjoyed the dark ipa, hop goddess and hefeweizen. plus $5.25 for a pint? i'm down.
FOOD- 2.5/5
meh. not the best or the worst you'll ever have. no real stand outs. it's a shame their award winning burger isn't available on the late lunch menu!
SERVICE- 1/5
we had a server so bad, it gave way to being mimicked all weekend. he didn't read specials. he didn't tell us which beers were out. he brought the wrong order. he then told us it was the right order. he pointed to us "you." and we said our order. no apology ever. and we almost missed our ferry. lame. but memorable!
(3.5 stars)
They call it "peanuts on the floor atmosphere" on their website- they're not lying! There are, indeed, peanuts on the floor!
Fairly standard pub food (e.g. pricey pizzas... $18-$20; some fish options for $20+; burgers and chicken sandwiches - $11; if you are really interested in fresh tasting food, there are other places in OB that do it better) served by cheerful, kind staff in an oddly charming space - the real draw here, of course, is the beer on tap. Â One caveat: this isn't a place to take your vegetarian friends - the non-meat options are slim.
Off-season, it's fairly quiet (on a Sunday evening, it started to fill up around 7:45pm); on-season, the waits can be long and it's best to arrive early if you want a seat.
For the guests who arrived from out of town the night before the big event, we planned a dinner at the Offshore Ale Co. Â There were 11 of us, so we were crammed together around 3 small round tables. Â We made it work, but it was tight. Â
We grabbed some peanuts from the barrel by the door and started cracking! Â Throwing the shells on the ground was fun, until I almost slipped on my way to the bathroom. Â I'll have to remember to shuffle my feet next time!
We ordered a hummus plate for the table. Â I've never seen such a huge platter of hummus in my life. Â It has a nice lemony tang to it and the kalamata olives were delicious. Â It was served with some crispy flat bread. Â We ran out of bread, but still had 1/2 a plate of hummus left. Â The waiter brought out some more flatbread, but I didn't see how much he charged for it. Â
Several people split a few bottles of wine, others tried the beers. I was the only one who had something non-alcoholic. Â I had to ask for refills. Â Bad.
I asked our waiter about the meatloaf. Â He said it was quite good. I Iiked the idea of it being cooked with bacon around it. Â
He lied.
When I was a kid, my dad used to heat up TV dinners for us because my mother worked evening shifts at the Emergency Room at St. Therese in Chicago. Â He used to always give me the salisbury steak. Â I used to think it was fine dining. Â The meatloaf was on that level. Â It had a bizarre texture to it and the bacon was not a flavor enhancer. Â (It was so burnt on the top that I thought it was carmelized tomato sauce. Â The mashed potatoes were good, though. Â I enjoyed the broccoli, too.
I should have ordered the Portuguese Fisherman's stew. It looked delicious.
These guys have some awesome craft beers! Â In particular, the Offshore Brown Ale is one of the tastiest brews I've ever had in my life. Â So tasty in fact, that after discovering it on the ferry to the island, we sought out the brewery restaurant itself to get some more!
The restaurant has a great nautical feel, with an all wooden interior and a second "deck" that is decorative in feel. Â They also sport a large barrel full of peanuts for bar consumption at the front entrance. Â The bar is well stocked with a bunch of their own Offshore brews. Â Unfortunately when we wanted to purchase a couple six-packs to go, they were out!
One of several stops on our beer tour of MV. Great local hangout. The Blueberry beer was quite a treat. We didn't try food here although it smelled very good.
Good microbrew and selection. Not too big, but a lot of regional beers and not all domestics. Â The bartender was great and sent us to our next stop which was another great find.
The Food is fine, better than average, sometimes, good., But, yes, their own brewed beer is not impressive, just watered down or shallow. And, people seem to drink wine and bottled beer more than their house brand.
The Atmosphere in general is to attract young people, well-mixed, and some noisy jazzy music that does not go along with the theme of the food or interior decor.
The reason I am giving 1 star is because the owner, Glenn, failed to take the complaint from my negative experience with the very aggressive hostess, Lily a moment ago.
It is still the off-peak season here;  Other restaurants do not sell many alcohol drinks during this time and cannot open late making no money, this place can do still well. And, tonight was the night when there were  4-5 groups of 2-3 people each waiting at the door. And, unlike the hostess, Lily, said, 15 min. waiting, it reached 30min. and, she tried to put aside by allowing two person groups 3-4 times behind us, and after another 20min. she said they did not serve many things on the menu like oven baked pizzas, which happened to be always not available, cheap trick to save the wood money and she advised us to leave if that was why we were there waiting. When we responded with, yes, we were staying for other foods,  then, with big frowns in her face. That is when I noticed that something was not right with her.
When it became 30min without a word, I politely asked "how much longer?", and her reaction was "would you like me to clear off these people? They were  paid customers and what would like me to do?" with a very confrontational voice. I reminded her she originally said 15min. and if we were not going to be seated for 30min. we could have decided somewhere else. Or, she should not have given a 3 seat table to the last group of two, and reminded her that 3 other groups who arrived after us were also seated in the middle of the dining area(which means they are good for 3-4 people to sit, although tight).
I knew she forgot us and showed her favoritism to two groups pretending they reserved their table before arriving. So, she was embarrassed and raised her voice more and lying that we did not even wait for more than 15min. based on her waiting list, which instigated not only us but the next group of 4 that we all complained that it was  indeed longer than 30min. And, the 6 seat table was still empty and not taken all night and would not give that to the diners of 4 behind us.  Anyway, Glenn told me later that there is no arrival time printed for each waiting group, but that Lily might not have said such thing back at me.
Finally, when we got seated, she whispered at one of us, that my hunger might make me feel it was longer and I was impatient That was like talking to her girlfriend behind my back! Now, I lost my temper and stepped out to speak to the owner, Glenn. Â
He was the worst. When I called the manager out, as I did not create the scene inside, he came out after 5 min. drinking his beer in one hand, and the other hand in his pocket, he  did not believe any of my words, and defended Lily, And, told me that this is the pub, not the fine dining.
He added that,
'You have to understand I have a  hard time managing these group of workers, who didn't even have a college degree, some are lazy, crazy, and some others are weirdos, and I am still managing them fine," and that , knowing Lily for the past two years, she has never had any problem. No apology ! C'mon, is she your girlfriend or FB?
I just asked him to take a notice and remember this very incident and if anything happens between her and any other customer or myself again. he should reconsider his opinion. But, he said she was not like that and he honestly believed I was oversensitive-but, Â why would I start a fight with a girl when I go out for a happy dinner and a beer?
He did not know how to handle the situation. Â All I wanted was "I am sorry if this happened to you or if you feel this way, and I will have a word with her, or handle it to make sure this won't happen again."
Why did he think he could change the way I felt?
So, with my stomach getting sick of the two, I want to make sure everyone to watch out Lily. And, if you have an Asian face like mine, make sure you might get picked on by her with a big attitude. With the boss who cannot handle this simple nuisance at all- he was already half drunk at 8:30pm. Good job, guys. I and many of my friends on the island will not tolerate this kind of owner/place or recommend this place to anyone.
On the other hand, I feel sorry for the some really friendly waitresses working hard there to be called, lazy, no degree holders, crazy, weirdos, by their own boss behind their back. I even asked my waitress to come on this website to read what he had said about his own employees tonight. That is not fair for them, Glenn. GROW UP!
Seafood caught about hour ago? Check.
On-location Brewery? Check.
Outdoor seating? Check.
Wicked sweet t-shirts for the tourists? Check.
A giant barrel full of free peanuts who's shells you toss on the floor? Check and check.
And the food? My goodness...let's not forget about the food. The fried calamari was so good it barely lasted 5 minutes on the table. The pizza was great, too. Next time, I am trying the truffle French fries. They sounded ridiculously good, but I was oh-so-full after all those peanuts.
Offshore is a great place to catch some live music in the shoulder season. Â During the summer its a nice place to bring kids for an early dinner, to eat peanuts that you are encouraged to throw on the floor and its a good place to drink pints of beer at a beautiful wood bar. Â
Only problem is the beer is not that good. Â And believe me, I have been giving that beer "one more shot" for years now. Â That's not to say that the beer isn't passable, because it is, but if you are a beer snob, you will be disappointed.
This joint is cozy, a great place to check out if you are on island in the off season. Â Fire place, huge booths, wooden rafters, rustic feel, etc.
I hear the burger here is likely the best on island. Â If you are into killing cows and all that.
I myself suggest pizza and a glass of wine.
