Why would you come to an Irish pub for the food? Don't get me wrong, the food is fine. I've had a few of the appetizers and a salad and I wasn't displeased with any of them. But the key is to pair it with a (very affordable) beer sampler or two. Maybe three? Or is that pushing it? That's why you go to a place like this. And that's why you come back, and frequently.
Sure, this place has a divey feel, but I love that about it. Just remember: get beer, maybe some curry fries, and you'll be just fine.
Been here a few times after work and it totally fulfills that 'gahhh- get me out from under these fluorescent lughts' cure, so often needed on a friday afternoon.
The place is dark, but full of character and clean. Â Atmosphere is very relaxed, not at all one of those joints where you go 'to be seen,' thank goodness. Â Bar staff is appropriately friendly, but, as previously mentioned, not in your face. Â The beer selection is impressive and varied. Â I've always found multiple options i enjoyed, and have never been made to feel like a pain when asking for a taste.
Food appears to be generally scratch-made, and i've never been disappointed. Â Their soups are awesome (seriously), as well as salads, sandwiches, and entrees. Â Between myself and a colleague, we've sampled pretty much most of the menu. Â They also have daily specials, which i appreciate, because you really can always find something new. Â Prices are about average, maybe a little above, but i'm very willing to pay more for something made in-house.
If you're looking for a comfy spot with friends, coworkers, or even just a casual date, the old dublin is a solid choice.
I don't normally hang out in Wallingford very often because I actually like to enjoy life, but when I do, there's really only one bar that sounds out to me: The Old Dublin.
Sure, from the outside, it looks like any other dreary, nondescript Irish pub. Â But inside?
Okay, on the inside it also looks like a dreary, nondescript Irish pub. Â But the Old Dublin is so much more than that.
For one, the bartenders are all pretty awesome. Â They're just friendly enough without getting all up in your shit and I appreciate it. Â I've brought a few friends here and they've always interacted just enough to make a great impression, but not so much that you wish they'd just bug off.
Second of all, they have a surprisingly good beer list. Â I believe they have something like 22 beers on tap, and quite a few of them are interesting. Â They have a few seasonals, some locals, and a few surprises.
But here's the kicker: for 7 bucks, you can get four 6 oz. sample glasses. Â That's right. Â Â 24 ounces of delicious beer (your choices!) for 7 bucks. Â How are you gonna beat that? Â Let me answer for you: you aren't. Â So put that delicious beer in your face hole and quit your cryin'.
The atmosphere is pretty interesting. Â It seems pretty heavily local with a few younger folks coming and going. Â I came here with a friend one night and witnessed someone get thrown out over an argument over a softball team. Â It was amazing. Â I'd never seen people take softball so seriously, nevermind get tossed out of an Irish pub over it.
I can't really speak to the food quality, however. Â I have eaten the curry fries while intoxicated once or twice, and they were fine, but unremarkable.
Nonetheless, you don't come here for the food or the ambiance. Â You come here for the amazing beer sample specials, the friendly bartenders, and of course, the weirdos getting tossed outta the bar.
If you need more than that from an Irish pub, then you and I probably aren't gonna be friends.
The Old Dublin simply feels like home.
From the couches lining the windowsill, to the friendly personalities behind the bar, it wont take long for you to feel welcome.
The food here is outstanding, and surpasses your average pub fare you may have come to expect. Everything from the Irish Burger to the Bookmaker (a roast beef dish, served over rye bread with gravy and mashed potatoes) will leave you satisfied.
The beer selection is great as well. Over 20 on tap, you'll find many popular craft breweries like Blue Point, BBC, and Hooker, as well as Guinness and Smithwicks to name a few. Sorry, no Bud Light here.
Every night on the weekend features live music as well, and more often than not, it's entertaining.
Big fan of the old Dublin.
This is a great place to sit down and grab a bite to eat and a pint or two to wash it down. Â However, if you are looking for a "hard drinking bar", this is not the place. Â
The food is good, with some exceptional specials from time to time (their meat loaf is outstanding), though pricey. Â Their appetizers include curry chips (fries and curry sauce), which I effin' love. Â Unfortunately, their more recent changes to the menu show a shift from Irish Pub to more generic fare. Â How Irish are quesadillas, really?
They have a good selection of beer on tap, as well as hard cider. Â Its definitely not the standard mix of bud and coors.
The atmosphere is casual, but cramped, especially when the place starts to fill up.
All the people complaining about how dark it is need to get a life. The lighting fits the mood of the bar. It's supposed to be like that. Honestly, it's not that dark! Maybe you all should open your eyes a bit.
The food served here is traditional Irish pub grub. It's very good. In fact, the only thing I've ever had here that was not very good was the prime rib. It was a special that night. They don't normally do prime rib and it showed. But whatever! All the other food is great.
Waitstaff is very friendly. Service is always pretty quick.
I did take off one star due to how conservative they are with the alcohol. The last time I went there I ordered a Grateful Dead. Very alcoholic. About the same as a long island iced tea. Then when I ordered another the bartender said no. Limit one per person. I was liek really? Ok just bring me a jack and coke. Ok. After that I wanted a beer. THEY CUT ME OFF!! They said I drank them too fast. REALLY? Well at this point I was pretty upset. The waitriss knew this and got me a beer anyway. I didn't even drink it all because I was so mad.
Other than that one thing no other complaints. So be mindful, just because its a bar/pub doesn't mean you're going to be able to order what you want for alcohol. Go somewhere else if you want to drink.
This is a very nice and relaxed place for Wallingford. I've stopped in quite a few times for some beers and some Irish Pub grub.
I like the dark lighting as it gives it a relaxed atmosphere and less of a club/bar/pick up spot vibe. The service is pretty fast and fairly friendly. They have a really good selection of beer on tap and the baretenders are always willing to recommend something new and different.
I like coming here as it attracts an older crowd and the usual suspects of regulars. Younger patrons generally don't stay long as tomfoolery is definitely not tolerated here.
It's definitely a try it at least once spot in Wallingford.
I came here for the first time on a Saturday night, i had been meaning to try it for some time after reading about it on yelp. Â I took a seat at the bar and was warned there may be a bit of wait on food since they were packed and there was a party of people being waited on. Â The service turned out to be very friendly and fast and i didn't find myself waiting long, Â
They have a great selection of beer on tap all of which tasted very fresh, i had the Guinness and a few varieties of the bluepoint. Â I had the curry fries for an app and i really liked them, held me over just fine while i waited on my Guinness beef stew. Â The stew was delicious and it came with Irish brown bread that i really enjoyed as well.
My girlfriend had the corned beef colcannon which she loved, which was served with mashed potatoes with chopped kale and a dill bechamel i believe. Very tasty.
I really liked the ambience, as some people have stated/complained it is on the dark side but that's exactly what i love about it. Â Very warm and relaxed feeling.
Also the live music that was there that night was absolutely fantastic, the pair that played were very talented and they played a lot of the popular Irish songs (wild rover, whiskey in a jar etc)
Glad i gave this place a chance, i will certainly be back.
This is a very comfortable, traditional, Irish pub. Â Full menu with weekly specials. Â Large selection of draft beers, and a few Belgian beers available in bottles.
The outdoor patio is key in the warmer months, but open all year for the smokers.
Traditional "Irish Sessions" happen every Thursday night. Â Live music just about every Friday & Saturday night. Â -no cover.
Very friendly with most of the clientele being regulars. Â The "younger" crowd looking to cause problems don't last long because they are just not tolerated.
Make sure you check out some of their unique desserts. Â Many made with alcohol. Â Guinness Castle cakes for example as well as Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes.
This is a great authentic Irish pub.
The Guinness takes time. The food is tasty. There are couches and darts and a live traditional Irish music seisiun on Thursday nights.
There's a very comforting homey atmosphere here that led me to go back again and again, even when I could no longer drink.
The one thing I'd criticize it with is that the food's a bit pricy. But everything I've had there was tasty. Great bar service. I'd gladly go back.
The Old Dublin is a cozy pub with good food and a great beer selection. The traditional Irish music session on Thursday nights is a unique experience that is hard to come by anywhere else in Ct. All of the food that I have eaten here (all the vegetarian selections) has been delicious and the staff rocks! Great place to hang with family or friends and have a pint and a bite to eat.
Review Source:I live right down the street and never gave this place a chance until one night I saw they were running a chicken pot pie special. I was sold and we took a seat at the bar. The lighting is very low but it gives it a nice warm den feeling (They also have a fenced in patio when its nicer weather). It was later in the evening and I was lucky enough to score the last order of the chicken pot pie, and my boyfriend ordered the fish and chips. The food was AMAZING. It is so hard to find pot pie served in a restaurant without it tasting like milky chicken soup in a pie shell, but this was more than I expected! The fish and chips were so good too, the batter on the fish was excellent and light. To add to the great food the service there was warm and friendly and they treated us like we've been going there for years. Even the other regulars at the bar were friendly. We've been back numerous times since and have tried many different dishes and no complaint yet. I really suggest trying this place out.
Review Source:I'm giving this three stars with the thought that I would go back and re-evaluate after another meal. Â I went for dinner with my sister, brother-in-law and grandmother and had an enjoyable time. Â The first negative was that it was way too dark. Â Maybe our seats were particularly bad, but I was facing out a window and my sis and bro-in-law were these black silhouettes. Â My burger was pretty sub-par. Â Sort of dry and just boring. Â
The positives: Â My gramma is one picky old bird. Â But she raved about the meatloaf and mashed potato meal. Â Everyone besides me really liked their meal. Â They had Rogue's dead guy ale on tap, which is delicious. Â And there was a guy playing an accoustic guitar with a blend of traditional Irish tunes and some more contemporary folk songs. Â
Like I said, I liked it enough to want to go back, but if the lighting is as dark and my food is as bland I won't hesitate to drop it down to two stars.
You're on warning Old Dublin.
If you are looking for a 20 something meat market go to Rookies. If you are looking for a good game of cricket, beamish stout and good Irish hospitality The Old Dublin is your place.
The owners are responsible and care about their customers. That's why you got kicked out for being drunk Sara Tiffany.... Duh!
The Old Dublin atmosphere is cozy with lots of regulars. Â The food is simple fresh and fantastic. The bangers and chips are authentic and the curry sauce is awesome. The Irish burger.. delicious.
The entertainment is perfectly irish pub. Paul, Mark, Pierce & an occaisional Seamus on the Illian pipes is always entertaining.
For a lower end (neighborhood) pub it's excellent. If you are expecting the Ritz forget it. The food is decent. Hamburgers, Shepards pie and other Irish dishes are typical menu items.
The entertainment consist of local bands, mainly acoustic. Traditional Irish folk on Thursday nights. Note that it is not the rabble rousing IRA songs the Clancy Bros made popular. It was louder than it had to be but you could still carry on a conversion.
I went there on St Patrick's Day once a few years ago. "PACKED" is an understatement. Â The other two times I have been there were on a Thursday and a Saturday. Reasonable crowd both times. I would not call it an "older crowd" unless I was in my younger 20's. Broad range of age groups. Bring friends I didn't see it as a "Pick up joint"
It's not a place I would pick to be a "regular" but it waas enjoyable and I will go back.
It is an older crowd that gathers at The Old Dublin. Last night was chill but I have been there for one man bands that were way too loud. Their food is okay but not memorable. I was there last night after neglecting the place for a few years I went back to catch up with a friend and I enjoyed being in a carpeted bar with couches. I was not impressed with their selection of tap brews but nonetheless there was a selection of tap brews. In the past I have brought cards to play here and enjoyed the electronic darts.
One thing I hate...
One person bathrooms, (male and female) that open right into the bar...
1. If the lock is broken and the door unexpectedly opens your caught squatting
2. You are knocking and knocking but can't hear if someone is in there and got forbid you jiggle the handle and its not locked and you see someone squatting.
Causes me bathroom anxiety.
I have never been more insulted than when, upon my arrival at The Old Dublin I was kicked out for "being drunk." Seriously, the owner of the bar said to me "You can't be drunk here." I asked him what the issue was and he said I was "acting inappropriately." When I asked him to elaborate, he wouldn't. In all honestly, I walked into the bar with a group of very rowdy people celebrating a birthday. There was a band playing. I bumped into a friend and jumped on him to say hello, like I often do with this friend. Then my friend went to order me a drink and I started dancing a little. Then I was booted. I asked someone about it and apparently they don't like younger people at that bar. Granted I didn't look anything like any of the other people at the bar: I was wearing jeans and a Yankees shirt tied up showing my midriff and I was obviously the youngest person at the bar. Who cares? I did nothing to deserve being kicked out of the bar, in fact I have never been kicked out of a bar before in my life. The blaring ageism of this place is reason enough for me to never go back nor recommend it to anyone else.
