I love this place, probably because it reminds me so much of the old Ron's Farmhouse in Mountain View. It's just a little dive bar with an old time western motif, right down to the swinging saloon doors on the entrance.

It's a fairly good sized place, great jukebox, and friendly people. The prices are a little lower than most the bars in town. Definitely a great place for a good time. Things start picking up around the time people start getting off work. Days are a good time for a little chit-chat and relaxing.

If you're well centered you will love this place. If you are pretentious, go somewhere else. The Monday  through Friday night bartender will spoil you. The regulars are super nice and you're guaranteed a great conversation.

It was a dark and cold November night when we came upon this lil honky tonk bar, and the night turned out to be legendary!  Words can't even describe the fun that we had, should have video taped it!  We sang, we danced, we drank, we made new friends...did I mention we drank?  This homey neighborhood bar made us feel right at home!  I will always cherish the memory of the night we partied at Over The Hill Gang Saloon!

My BFF jump up on the mic, Joanne gave me a tambourine....it was nothing but a suprising good time!

I went on a fFriday night and the entire bar sang along with Neil Diamonds "Sweet Caroline" and they knew all the words!  And yeah, the juke box also has every good Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline song along with a bunch of custom CDs.  The Gang should get a best of Santa Cruz based on their jukebox, but the real reason they deserve a best of is the bartending.  Nobody every waits for the bartender at the Over the Hill Gang Saloon, rather, the bartenders wait on the customers.  The rest of Santa Cruz could learn a lot from this bar.

i think its impossible for this place to go above 3 stars. its not that its bad or anything. i just feel like 3 stars here fit the place perfectly, like they wanted a 3 star place instead of a 5 star place. they perfected the 3 stars. the ATM on a stage, the smoking inside, the electric dart board, the historical roulette wheel, the creepy cowboy and indian hiding. they perfected it.

and to top it off i got free drinks for playing a regular at darts.

    will come back for sure.

This place is amusing to say the least.

my friend used to live about 2 blocks from here. One night I was staying over with her and we'd had a finished the 2 bottles of wine I'd brought for dinner. We decided to make a run to the liqour store for some more, but they were closed. I had seen the saloon doors of the OTHGS on my way to her house and was eager to pop my head in on our way back to her house. There were 4 people in the bar : the bartender, some middle aged drunk, and two happily buzzed women at the end of the bar. The bartender was very nice. we ordered a few shots of bushmills and a couple of guinesses, and it was on! the jukebox had a nice selection, and it was quite a trip to chat with the people in the bar. At some point during the introductions, the middle aged drunk guy decided that my friend and I were in fact a couple and he asked us if we loved and took care of one another. We were amused by this, so we played along. most of the next hour is pretty fuzzy, but I know we got invited to the bartender's birthday party which was to be at the bar the next day, and that the atmosphere was pure local dive bar heaven.

I enjoy places like this because of the people you meet.  If nothing else, it was quite a unique and unforgetable experience!

Stopped in for a celebratory beer after landing a rental house (it's so hard in Santa Cruz when you have a dog!). After the bartender figured out that we weren't the Chinese restaurant delivery people (apparently, they come by often), she happily served us a couple of brews...at some point, everyone got up and did the Zorba the Greek dance don't know where that came from...and had a friendly conversation about whether or not "Oriental" is an offensive word. This all sounds a bit strange, and while it was somewhat David Lynch like it was comfortable and fun.

The second time we stopped by I was with H and Dr. Ono -- and the vibe was totally different. Upon sitting down, an elderly gentleman at the bar told H to let me sit the furthest inside -- and everyone gave us pretty hostile stares...we gulped down our beers and got the hell out of there.

    First visit = 3.5 stars. Second visit - 1 stars.  Average = 2.25
