Who knows if the food is good or not? It would have been nice to have gotten some service but we received none. The hostess sat us, the server brought us waters and then we waited and waited....and waited. And waited some more just to be sure. It was a slow Monday night so I have no idea what the problem was, but sadly we just got tired of waiting and left.
Review Source:When I walked in I was reminded me of a place I visited along the downtown mall in Charlottesville, VA (also a university town).
By the time I arrived the kitchen was closed (11PM on Saturday), so I just had a beer - the Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale.
I would like to come back to try their crepes.
Welcome to the first stop on our Athens Magical Mystery Food Tour! http://magicalmysteryfoo… We're two doctoral students who decided to see what food Athens had to offer and go to a new restaurant each week. Our first stop was Pauley's Original Crepe Bar.
We tried : Southwestern Savory Crepe
Cordon Bleu Savory Crepe Crepe chips with Terrapin dip
And Peanut butter dess
Presentation: The food was pretty. The cordon bleu crepe that I had had that nice honey dijon drizzle and everything looked pretty appetizing.
Taste: The chips and Terrapin dip were pretty good, the savory crepes were better, but the real star of the show was the dessert crepe. Filled with peanut butter crunch yumminess and Nutella, it was hard to go wrong. It is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and plenty of whip cream on side. We both walked away wishing we had ordered dessert crepes for dinner.
Service: Prompt and polite. Nothing much to say about that. Although nobody greeted us when we walked in, and did not know where to sit for about 30 seconds
Cleanliness: Yes.
Location: Right in the heart of downtown Athens. Super crowded on Friday nights, but empty with close parking when we went on Monday evening.
Dress casually for weekdays but you may need to consider dressing up a little classier at the weekend.
Value ($$): Not the cheapest. We each ended up paying about $20 which, for the amount of food we got, is not great. However, the dessert crepe more than made up for it :)
Came here for dessert and alcohol. Left pretty happy.
Strawberry nutella crepe and the lemon sugar crepe were good. I came really for the atmosphere though. It's more of a bar that just happens to serve food kinda place.
Not knocking it though, would totally come back. Fun place. Wasn't disappointed. Good selection of beers.
I only ever write reviews to compliment institutions but felt I had to jump in and give my 2 cents. It goes like this: 'UGH!!!" Run run run to your local Kroger and buy a pack of pre-made crepes in the produce section, then buy a bottle of Nutella and a carton of strawberries and assemble them - and you'll be well on your way to exceeding whatever it was I ate yesterday...! The crepes are thick, mealy and cardboardish! NO NO NO! Crepes are meant to be thin and light, with large amounts of delicious filling. I ordered a lemon crepe and am still recovering from the bad taste in my mouth. I then re-ordered and asked for the Nutella and strawberry. UGH - ditto! This place doesn't deserve to call itself a crepery....that's an insult to what crepes should really taste like! On the other hand, if you just wanna order a beer and sit outside, you've got yourself a nice little prime people watching location. JUST DON"T ORDER THE CREPES!! I warned ya...
Review Source:Pauley's is great.
As someone who lives downtown, I nearly exclusively eat downtown and Ive got to say Pauley's is great. They really do have a great beer selection, some people go to Pauley's just to drink. It serves as a great bar. Its great for desserts, if you like crepe desserts. I went last night and unlike others experiences there was seating host and we did have to wait because they were so full but it was worth the wait. Its a cool trendy place. It always seems to be busy. Also, Im not sure when but it exapanded in the was used to be a shoe store next door so it bigger and seats more people than it did in the past when the location was roly poly. The food was far above mediocre. If you think it is then you just dont like crepes.
I went to eat here about a year ago, with my husband and daughter. I know it more of a bar/hangout, but we were there early in the evening before the drinking crowd, and we were very curious to try some crepes. However, when we went in, there was nobody to greet us, no sign saying seat yourself either. We sat ourselves, and waited...and waited...and waited. There was one other table and only a couple of people at the bar. Why were we ignored? Not sure, but we walked out and have no plans to return.
Review Source:Beer is top notch with rare selections. Â Food is good, love the TJ sauce. Â He knows how to make Hot sauce. Â Plus the bartenders are good, especially the manager. Â We made this place a regular stop when it first opened and were always treated well for it. Â Love it and can't wait for my annual pilgrimage to Athens to end in an evening here.
Review Source:Pauley's is f@#king awesome. Anyone who goes here with the intent of having an authentic french dining experience is fooling themselves from the start. Pauley's is a place to go during the day to have a beer and a good bite to eat, and then to return again at night to meet friends and watch games. Anyone who believes that Pauley's is trying to make a name for itself by rewriting the books on crepe making needs to reevaluate how they judge restaurants in Athens. Come in, have a beer, talk to the staff, and have an excellent time. Any less and you're doing something wrong.
Not liking Pauley's because the crepes don't remind you of your random semester abroad in France is like saying Barberitos is bad because the burritos are too big and have too much stuff in them to be authentic. And we all know Barberitos is awesome.
Warning!!! The crepes are disappointing and the restaurant is noisy. As a bar, this place might be okay for college students, but there is NOTHING authentic or tasty about the crepes, so don't go there expecting to have a traditional, tender, light crepe. The crepes have dry edges and a rubbery interior. Â Pauley's has a thing called "Crepes Suzette" that consists of a badly made crepe, powdered sugar, and a smear of lemon curd inside (a far cry from the real thing). It might be forgivable if the place didn't have "crepe" in its name. We won't be going there again.
Review Source:Now that I have finally wined and dined here, I'm 99% convinced Pauley's survives based purely on looks. But then again, I'd say that it's a pretty solid place to set up in a college town - the prices are definitely within a college kid's budget and the food's alright (not fantastic, but it'll do). Maybe it's because my standards were so high after hearing a million and one people absolutely gushing about this crepe bar, I was rather crushed when I sat down. The venue is super pretty and modern, but very loud, and the food is presented very appetizingly (and that's where the fun ends)... See, I'm telling you: Pauley's is 5 stars because of looks!
First, if you've never been here, it's kind of confusing: there's no sign, there's no hostess stand, there's NO ONE to direct or greet you... You're basically on your own. So, my friend smartly guessed that we ought to just seat ourselves and cross our fingers that someone notice the two new faces. Well, after uncertainly sitting and twiddling our thumbs for like 10 minutes, a server rushes past and assures us that someone will be right with us. That "someone" turns out to be her... So, after like another 7 minutes or so, she appears again and drops off menus. Then, after like another 7 minutes, she asks us about drinks. Water. Okay. Then, a few minutes later, our waters appear and she wanders off. Maybe 10 minutes later, she gets us our wine (which was really weird because we wanted the special with house wine with 2 crepes for $8 and normally, "house wine" means a specific bottle, but we actually could choose what we wanted and the girl herself wasn't entirely sure how the special worked, saying that she had to consult her manager... anyway, apparently because it was a Wednesday, wine was already half off, so helllllllo to $7 wine! My friend deemed it the equivalence of Budlight in the wine world and darling, that's not a good thing.).
Anyway. What do you get from all this rambling? Service sucks. That's all. I mean, I understand that it was crazy busy, but c'mon... Not cool. I had actually eaten dinner beforehand and was only planning on enjoying dessert and wine, but with all the wait, I got hungry!
Crepes were pretty good, but I've had loads better. I got the Brie L T (clever name, I know...) = brie cheese, lettuce, and tomato. Hmm on second thought, this description for this sounds less than tasty, but it actually tastes alright. It wasn't amazing (okay, it was a little weird eating lettuce with crepes...), but I'm a sucker for brie and couldn't refuse. My friend got crepes with chicken, which she seemed to enjoy, but maybe that was the wine talking. Not sure! The S'mores crepes were verrrrry chocolate-y and yummy though, and we discovered that desserts and entrees are the same sizes.
The menu is vast and you'll notice that there's A LOT of weird crepe concoctions. If you thought it was impossible, you'll find it here. Like other people, I also thought it was bizarre that beer was served with crepes. Huh. Well, if that floats your boat...
This place barely teeters on a 3. Not my fav and I'm pretty sure it's one of those overrated Athens attractions that everyone wants to love, but deep down, really can't.
Sounds like some bad experiences by some others, at one of my top 5 restaurants in Athens no less, so here's my take.
Pauley's is 2 different places; by day, a great place for a casual lunch or an early dinner. By night, especially on weekends, one of your more typical bar scenes in downtown Athens. While I have experienced both, I much prefer visiting Pauley's in the early afternoon. As mentioned, they have a HUGE selection of beer; more than your average Athens bar, so that's great if you fancy yourself an aficionado, or if you just want to join their 100 beers club. I go here for the crepes though, which is sure to be unlike anything else you can get in town.
Yes, Pauley's' style of crepes is nothing like what you're going to find from the street carts in Paris (believe me, I've had those too) but rather their own special take on this form of a "sandwich." I've had a handful of the different crepes but one of my favorites is the Lott; a mix of several different deli meats and cheeses. My girlfriend's favorite is the buffalo chicken; hot sauce, chicken, ranch dressing, and lettuce, and it is very tasty as well. The S'mores crepe is the only dessert crepe I've ever had, and it was delicious. You can also create your own savory or dessert crepes from a big selection of ingredients.
Their lunch special is a great deal, and that is when we always go; any crepe, a drink, and a side just for the price of the crepe. So it ends up being around $6-8 per person. I always get the side salad which has never let me down. And whether sitting at a table or at the bar, I've always gotten very friendly service with. During the late hours when it turns into a bar scene, they'll still let you order some of the more basic things from the menu.
I prefer to go here during the day when there's very few people in for the lunch special. And the half a dozen or so friends I've recommended or taken along have loved it.
After a weekend of crappy food/service downtown, I have figured out that most places downtown suck for food unless they are restaurants first. Â Pauley's is a fun bar but don't go for the food. Â I ordered a pizza crepe that had a tiny smudge of tomato sauce on it. Â When I asked for more tomato sauce it took 15 minutes to get it out to me, because the guys in the back were "having a hard time figuring out how to use the can opener." Â I am not joking - this is what my waiter told me. Â Once I finally got more tomato sauce my meal was cold and so was the sauce the waiter brought to the table. Â My friends ordered the cheese steak sandwich which was about the size of a penny yet cost $8. Â All in all a poor restaurant. Â The French would roll over laughing at these things being called crepes.
Girls seem to love Pauley's. Â It's always packed with women cackling and reverberating their high pitched voices off the tile floor. Â Go for the drinks and the women, just don't go for the food.
My dinner club group decided that we would give this place a shot. Big mistake..Pauley's should stick with beer and forget the crepes! What kind of weird combo is that anyway, beer and crepes? The food was mediocre and nothing more than below average bar food. Â
On the other hand if you love to drink beer and like trying new brews then this is the place. They have a beer club you can join so that is a plus. Skip the food and go for the brew..
This is a cool spot in downtown Athens and close to UGA campus. The menu contains a variety of items, but featured item are the crepes. The crepes themselves are okay, but the overall preparation and filling make them great! Even more vast than the menu is the beer & drink list which is fantastic.
This place rocks with its location - menu - drinks - and night life. Only issue is the places isn't bigger!
The crepes are so-so. It's not awful but it's not good either. I found the crepe itself (not the filling) tough and chewy. Don't come in expecting your traditional crepe fillings but they do offer some interesting flavors like the buffalo chicken and turkey/cranberry. The Crepe Suzette is completely mislabeled as being made with lemon and sugar (it's supposed to be made with caramel, orange zest, and flambeed with Grand Marnier most of the time).
What really impressed me was their extensive selection of beers. Samples are available upon request. If you somehow try all of their beers, you'll be forever immortalized in Athens with a picture on the hall of fame. An impressive feat to say the least.
While the food is so-so in quality and taste, it's cheap (in comparison to the portion) and Pauley's has a great beer selection. A popular place to sober up or chill with a drink no doubt.
Awful, just awful. Â Maybe, i'm just basing this on my own prior experience, but i'm used to crepes being adorned with some kind of sauce. Â These were just dry crepes with cheap ingredients inside. Â Additionally, the bruschetta i ordered as an appetizer wasn't awful, but it wasn't the best. Â I took a friend there for his birthday, and i truly regretted it. Â (Granted, i shouldn't have taken my friend to a place that i myself had never tried b4, but oh well...) Â In the spirit of French cuisine and language, let me just say this place is definitely a n'encore performance.
Review Source:Sometime you wanna go where everybody knows your name!
Crepes and beer? I was skeptical at first myself. The bar manager does a great job of selecting quality beers and switching out taps so that there's always something new and exciting or an old favorite waiting for you when you stop by Pauley's. The food is high quality and doesn't just include crepes. I love the HUGE salads which come complete with an underlying crepe.
The eats are worth giving it a try, but you'll keep coming back for the friendly, efficient staff and a crowd of regulars who are happy to see new-comers.
Pauley's round the world beer club is addicting and a great way to get initiated into the Pauley's community.
