Service was almost as bad as the food. I wish we'd just went to McDonald's -- would have saved money and time... and had better food. Apps came out with the main course, if you can call it that. We didn't finish it, but apparently the empty glass and pushed away plates weren't hint enough that we weren't pleased and that we needed someone to swing by our table. Overall, I've had better experiences at truck stops. Do yourself a favor and ignore this place or be prepared to spend too much on crappy food.
Review Source:This place hits a perfectly decent sweet spot. The ribs were just fine for a bar & grill (or gar & brill, as they put it), though I would have liked more heat in the chipotle BBQ sauce. I actually like the way the shoestring fries came out, a little soft, not too crisp. The veggies were an indifferent clump underneath everything else, but that's not really what I ordered ribs & fries for. And the black & tan was beautifully layered -- it even gets its own listing on the beer menu. All in all, a nice surprise way out in the boonies. Â On par with the nearby Applebee's, but Peppery gets points for being a local solo restaurant. Will I make a pilgrimage? Nah, but on the off chance I find myself out this way again in need of food, I'll happily return.
Review Source:I'm pretty simple to please, but I must say, the Peppery is my favorite restaurant in Tuolumne County. Â My husband and I are busy parents but when we get out for a date we always pick the Peppery. I get the Pasta Primavera every time I go...it is so fresh with crunchy vegetables (peppers, mushrooms, onions, and artichokes!). Â So delicious. My husband gets the seafood pasta. Â We even went there on our anniversary and gave ourselves unlimited funds to enjoy the evening. The steaks were amazing. So delicious! Â I've also had their Salmon and it was great. Â I don't think I've ever had something there I didn't love. Â I am a huge fan of their fries too...we almost always get them for appetizers with a big cup of ranch dressing. Â The Peppery is always busy...it's a must-try in our county!
Review Source:I would not recommend this place. My family went to eat here (out of towners). They where treated so horribly due to their Ethnicity. They where seated in a separate part of the bar. Given warm beer & cold food. To only be asked by the waitress how much longer they where going to be there for they had "More important" patrons to serve. This is 2012 & my parents are middle classed, educated Mexican American (whom where born here in the US.) and are looked upon as if they are back in the 1950 w/ Racism being a major factor.
It honestly pained me to hear of their experience, I would NEVER recommend this place or ever eat at this establishment again.
I hope people really take this into consideration for this discrimination is no different  then if it was based on color, sex, age, religion or sexual preference.
Maybe they should really take a look at their structured Business practice & Values.
I hadn't been here for 3 years so I had to revisit the Peppery when I was finally in town. Last time I got the habanero steak and it totally destroyed me! It was single-handedly the spicest thing that I had ever eaten. First came the pain, then my mouth became numb, and then I was sweating profusely. Â IT WAS AWESOME! I debated about getting the habanero steak again. I wanted to actually taste the steak this time and not be in pain, so I decided to get the chipotle steak.
I had to give this gar & brill 3 stars - which isn't bad. Â Reasons for losing stars:
1. The entree came almost immediately after the appetizers. The timing should have been better
2. The chipotle steak had NO kick. Maybe I should've gotten the habanero steak. However, the steak was was tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly.
3. The chipotle steak was overpriced. It was over $20 and was really only worth $16.
4. The mashed potatoes was unusually thick, a bit dry, and difficult to swallow.
Overall, I would come back to the Peppery to revisit the habanero steak and would choose a baked potato instead.
A fantastic place to eat!!
I've been coming here since I was a kid, about 17 years now! The fries are AMAZING! Easily the best fries I've ever had anywhere.
My grandmother lived in Sonora, so every time we went to visit Grandma, you can bet we ate at The Peppery!
The owner, Chris, always recognized us and made us feel like part of the family. The service is always friendly, I have never had a bad experience here! Â I can't wait until I can go again!
Went there two days ago for dinner. Nothing to write home about. The food came out really fast and I don't think that's a good thing. My son did not like the burger and he eats burgers in every restaurant. I found that odd so I tasted it and found that it did not taste fresh at all, kinda tasted like it's been sitting there for a while. I ordered the fish and chips and have to say that it was not very good, VERY greasy.
I give the Service 5 stars though, very friendly!
We showed up just before the dinner rush, and were quickly seated. Â Service was prompt, attentive and cheerful, without hovering. Â Our food came quickly, which was good, as I was about ready to gnaw off the edge of the not-quite-clean table we were seated at. Â
The food itself is average -- I would go there, like I did tonight, to answer a craving, but not for an uplifting culinary experience. Â The burgers were certainly the largest I've ever seen, stretching as they did over an entire french bread roll, but the bacon on my bbq bacon cheeseburger was cold. Â The fries were excellent, however, and I would say that if you're a sports fan, check out the bar, order up one of their fifteen on-tap beers and a plate of their heaping shoestring fries for an excellent evening out.
Service is very good, but the food is mediocre.
I think I'd enjoy the sports bar area with massive screens and good brews, but the people I'm usually with aren't interested in that. The good thing is it's a fairly big place and constructed in a way that if you're not interested in the sports bar you don't see it.
The Peppery is a local fav for sure!! This place is ALWAYS packed! The portions are generous and the service is perky!
My favs:
Fried Asparagus
Fried Shrimp with spicy pumpkin dipping sauce
Chipotle Chicken Tortellini
Peppery Burger & seasoned fries
I always make an attempt to eat here whenever I'm visiting - it's really great!
If you are a local, this is the place to make an appearance and mingle with the other locals. If you are a visitor, this is a people watching dream come true.
Excellent service, very friendly, very attentive. The atmosphere is very casual. The Peppery is a good place to bring children. They have a nice variety of traditional American pub type foods including burgers and sandwiches. There portions are very big. If you like coleslaw, theirs is worth getting. They also have a nice selection of beers but do not serve hard liqueur.
4 stars
This is a convenient stopping off place on the way back from The Snow (Strawberry/Pinecrest/Yosemite). RIGHT off the highway 108, fast service, burgers and beer. Sports on TV.
The place was packed but our service was excellent. Food quality was just ok. DH had Western bbq burger with onion strings, I had california burger (avocado, pepper jack cheese) with fries. Let's just say the fries and onion strings were the highlight of the meal.
1 star for location, 2 for great service and 1 for the awesome fries/onion strings.
Minus 1 star because I got faint whiff's of a sour smell -probably the carpet- throughout our meal. Â My DH said I was crazy- he didn't smell it so beware to those yelpers with the sensitive schnazz like me.
I had an entree salad here that is one of my top worst meals ever. Â Sub-par ingredients and sloppy construction, and way overpriced for what it was. Â No one in my family wanted any of it, and in fact we never go there anymore because of that salad. Â The only thing I've ever had here that has been worth 4 stars was the Peppery soup, which is pureed vegetables and cream.
The food is beyond mediocre, but this place is always packed. Â There is a good beer selection though.
