Stopped by for the first time over the weekend and this is going to be a tradition for my family now. Â I saw all the great reviews and I absolutely HAD to try the spicy italian sandwich. Â I loved it. Â The sandwich was generously portioned, reasonably priced, and was great quality. Â It wasn't blow your socks off spicy, the pepperoncini's just gave it a bit of a kick. Â If you're a spice wimp then you won't like it, if you're a spice hound you'll be satisfied (although it could be hotter).
My wife and I bought the sandwiches and took them to go for a picnic at Fort Casey. Â Great decision. Â The sandwiches were drippier than I expected but were wrapped well enough to stay contained for the drive up. Â The cookies looked awesome, I regret not trying them. Â Also, the shop was slammed at 12:45 when we were there and we had to wait about 15 minutes for our sandwiches to be made. Â I'll bet this is abnormal, but it was worth the wait (even with a three year old and a newborn in tow).
Please note that there's a $0.45 surcharge on debit/credit transactions under $10.
Definitely worth stopping at Pickles for a sandwich.  The bahn mi sandwich rocks.  I ordered this without soy sauce to keep it from getting soggy since it was  to go.  We arrived close to closing time and they were out of baguettes, so I got this with flatbread and it was delicious.  The Greek salad was also fantastic.
Review Source:Stopped here today before clamming. Â Ordered 2 spicy Italian sandwiches (my deli barometer). Â People were friendly and the sandwiches were excellent.
Being from the northeast, I can appreciate what this place has to offer, the sandwich they served me reminded me of a spicy Italian sandwich I would get from an Italian deli back home. Â Oven baked, just the right amount of hot sauce and oil/vinegar, melted cheese, olives, pepperoncini's, Boars Head meats. Â The bread was heated perfectly. Â Oh, and the pickles taste just like the ones I plucked from the barrel as a kid. Â The owner must be a transplant from the NE also. Â The friendly girl who made our sandwiches handed them to us and said "made with love", and she was right, they were. Â
I don't make it to Whidbey very often, but when I do, I will be stopping here.
First review and I must say it is long overdue. Having been to this most excellent establishment several  times I just have to say this is what every deli should strive to achieve -  consistently awesome food served with a heaping dose of fast and friendly service. Pickles you rock!
Review Source:After an interminably long & harrowing day delivering around the Island & Whatcom Counties area, I decided a well-deserved late lunch break was just the ticket before boarding the ferry homeward. Since gas stations & convenience stores boasting deli's are usually anything but, I am always excited to see a legit sandwich joint.
Welcome to Pickles, home of friendly (just-shy of annoyingly so), efficient purveyors of badass sandwiches. I had the Spicy Italian (Hot cappicola, pepperoni, hard salami, sharp provolone, mozzarella cheese, romaine, tomato, red onion, pepperoncini peppers and black olives drizzled with a snappy garlic parmesan peppercorn dressing, extra virgin olive oil & red wine vinegar atop a tasty baguette). Soooo messy, sooo good. I look forward to stopping in again someday soon.
I dream of Pickles sandwiches. Okay, maybe not. But if it ever came down to it, these would be the thing of dreams. I have been to Pickles quite a few times and I cannot get enough. My personal favorite is the Smokey Beast.. But the Whidbey Club and the Philly Sandwich is freakin delish.
I've been really impressed with their service and obviously their tasty sandwiches.
You should go, and take your family.
While sitting on the ferry to Clinton, I enter "gluten-free" into the Yelp-O-Meter and find this deli. Since being diagnosed with gluten intolerance 4 years ago, I haven't really stepped into a deli -- even if they had gluten-free bread, I've found it to be poor quality (generally crumbly -- who wants a disintegrating sandwich in your hands?)
Oh my...not here. Not at all. Roast beef, sharp provolone, sundried tomatoes (chopped fine, so easy to eat), shoestring carrots (ditto), and hummus on one side and tzatziki sauce on the other. And they popped the whole thing on a panini grill -- someone thought of grilling gluten-free bread for once?!
I have never snarfed down a sandwich so fast -- in fact, I had to stop myself after the first half and went for a hike nearby. And I walked hella fast to get back to the rest of the sandwich, drooling all the way.
Most definitely coming back here the next time I'm on the island.
This place makes the best sandwiches on all of Whidbey Island. And what's better is the staff are so friendly and always helpful.
Just about every time I visit my family on Whidbey Island there is a lunch run to Pickles at some point. And every time I go myself they are so friendly and quick. All of the food is wholeosme and they don't skimp on anything, super fresh breads, plenty of choices of meats and cheeses, and lots of different condiments and spreads. They also have a variety of homemade salads (potato, pasta, etc). It's a nice and friendly neighborhood place and one visit will let you know why they're a favorite with the locals.
If you're taking the ferry to have a nice drive up the island, skip your home made picnic and grab lunch at Pickles, it's totally worth it!
I would ferry my ass over to Whidbey Island for a tasty sandwich from Pickles every day...but I wouldn't get a lot done and my ass would be GIANT. Â
Oh my gosh -- rosemary bread! Â Who needs anything other than fresh, delicious, soft rosemary bread? Â Couple the bread with the choose-your-own-fixins and you will never want to leave this place. Â I had Tillamook cheddar, spring greens, sprouts, cukes and chicken between the slices and I was a drooling mess. Â I also had some of the red potato salad which was potato salad as the Flying Spaghetti Monster intended. Â Potato salad WITHOUT egg involvment. Â Oh yes and there were big chucks of dill pickle in the tater salad. Â My mouth was so happy that lunch time.
The chicks who were working there were pleasant and slapped together my sammich with fantastic speed. Â They were professional yet friendly. Â Some locals came in and they conversed with them and knew their names. Â
The shop itself looked small to medium sized but there's a huge back room. Â I was thinking that when it's time to tie the knot, maybe Pickles would be a good choice for the catering or perhaps for the reception. Â Hmmm...
We stopped here prior to doing a little wine tasting around the island. The staff is friendly and energetic and the sandwiches...wow! I had the Silly Philly and can't stop thinking about it. The next time I am over on Whidbey Island, I'll make sure that I stop by and try one of there other great sandwiches. That is, if I am not too tempted by the Philly.
Review Source:Select from a variety of fabulous sandwiches or just pick your own ingredients. Their ingredients list is beyond belief!!!
Pro's
- Friendly staff.
- Warm, welcoming space.
- I'll be over on whidbey on weekends for the next two months, so WOOT for me!
Cons
- none
I chose to make my own sandwich, and had my ingredients on the baguet. It was too big to finish, but I gave it my best shot.
One word ( OK, two words ) consistently FANTASTIC! This place rocks. I tried this Vietnamese sandwich on a french roll that was to die for. A bit spicey but not too. Very fresh ingredients including the french bread which is a must have for a good deli. I do love my bread. I have been there now four times and every time the food and service is top notch. Can't wait to go back. Maybe even today!!
Review Source:Great find. Â High quality, well made sandwiches at reasonable prices located about 5 minutes from the ferry on WA525 and just 10 minutes south of Langley. Â My wife described her sandwich as the best Reuben she had ever had. Â I really liked my Chicken Caprese sandwich as well. Â Try the pickles as they are really crisp and they modify them on premises to make a hot pickle and a garlic pickle. Â The wait staff was really friendly and helpful and helped us out in distracting our girls when one of our kids bumped their head.
Review Source:OMG!!!!! Â My mouth is doing a happy dance :oD Â It's SO nice to have a veggie sandwich that is simply bursting with flavor. Â For any veggies out there (heck, for anyone out there), I highly recommend the grilled veggie panini with the feta. Â And a lemonade smoothie just tops it all off beautifully. Â Thank you for a *super* lunch!
Review Source:If you're in the area, stop in for sure.
HUGE nommie sandwiches!
I was visiting a friend in Seattle and we took a day trip up to the island and this place was recommended to us by a friend. Â We couldn't decide what we wanted to try so we got a Spicy Italian and the Whidbey Club and figured we'd split the 2 of them.
WOWAH. Our sandwiches came out and they were HUGE. We both ate a half of the club at the joint and then ended up taking the other sandwich home for dinner. It was good heated up but I bet it's even better when it is super fresh.
Keith was getting a little agro because his club kept falling apart when he ate it. I told him with a sandwich that fat, my rule is DO NOT PUT IT DOWN ONCE YOU START EATING. Aha.
This deli is not far at all from the ferry landing in Clinton. Â If you are looking for a bagel, go 2 doors down to the bagel store, but if you are looking for a nice, hot breakfast sandwich or picnic lunch, this is your place!
I bought 2 breakfast egg sandwiches. Â There were about 10 different options, depending on your preferred ingredients. Â I had the Mediterranean which had egg, turkey, sun dried tomatoes, and feta. Â My wife had another sandwich with egg, tomatoes, mushrooms and cheese. Â You have a choice of about 9 different bread types: Rosemary Diamante, Italian Baguette, Country White, Greek Flatbread, Multi Grain Wheat, Panino, Garlic Herb Wrap, Onion Rye or Gluten Free Bread.
Food was hot. Â They packed it to go with no problems. Â The food in the deli case also looked tasty - potato salads, pasta salads, cole slaw. Â They cater as well. Â Also a dozen or more lunch options including a "make your own" option where you pick your meats, cheeses and other fillings.
Sandwiches were made fresh, so expect to wait 10-15 minutes. Â
This place probably caters more to the locals, which I take as a good sign, but very friendly and welcoming to tourists like myself. Â Great place to grab a sandwich and head to the beach.
OH WOW...YUM! Staff very friendly and down to earth, atmosphere is cozy, food is EXCELLENT! i love the unique sandwiches they have and the sides to go with them. We need a franchise in Oak Harbor PLEASE! This place reminds me of a deli i used to go to back home ( California) My sister in-law was visiting me from San Diego and she luckily found this place and was very impressed as well. Thank you for your services, keep up the amazing work! =)
Review Source:Oh, yum! Â I treated myself to a nice moving day lunch, and was very impressed! Â I had the grilled veggie panini, and WOW! Â Scrumptious. Â
While they were making it, I read the information posted about why Pickles sandwiches cost a little more. Â The info was inspiring, and served to whet my appetite: Â support of local businesses, concern for the environment - - it was an interesting read, and a stellar experience altogether. Â
They also have a vegetarian option among their soup choices, everyday!
I ordered the Whidbey Island Club. Let me tell you that I was not prepared for this double decker. I place my order. I make small talk and go sit down. I return to the counter to see Kim wrapping up my beautiful sandwich and I begin to cry. I told her that not only was iI excited to eat that amazing thing, but I had never before cried over food. The sandwich was beautiful and soo tasty.
Now, I do not know if it was the wind outside (even though I was inside) or the fact that my sandwich was made out of love and it touched my heart.
Oh and the Philly cheese steak is still amazing.
I was lucky enough to have a sandwich here when they first opened. Â I visit the island once a year to see my family, and this is one of my must go places. Â I recommend the spicy italian, but the meatball sent my wife singing its praises too. Â Although I usually am only able to make it to pickles once on my trips, I've already been three times this visit! Â Great sandwich, great people, and even some pretty good beers to enjoy as well.
Review Source:This is a great friendly place where the servers know the locals' names and treat strangers like locals ('cept maybe they just call you Honey, which is fine by me - ok, I don't really think she called me that, but you know what I mean!).
When I asked her what was in the soup she could name every ingredient because she MADE it. She did not pour it from a can. It was delicious.
Chris had a Friday After Thanksgiving sandwich which is genius in both name and concept. He said it was delicious.
Great atmosphere. food, and service. Plus the cupcakes looked AMAZING!
Yum. Â I like Pickles Deli. Â It's a small but robust deli with high quality, fresh ingredients. Â The sandwiches are ample in size, very creative with a lot of variety. Â The space is clean and comfortable with a ton of condiments to choose from.
I haven't tried their soups or salads but they sound and look very high quality. Â The place is packed at lunch time. Â I've been impressed with the service, these are people who care that you are getting what you came for.
By the way, there's a nice crunchy pickle with each sandwich.
