This is a pretty good (although not awesome) place to stop if one is going to be in Pittsboro around lunchtime. Â Was out and about with my bride and my little girl after visiting the big cat sanctuary and hunger overtook us like a ravenous tiger, or was it a lion - or... oh never mind.
I opened the yelp app on my iphone and found this place just a quick walk from where I had parked on the main drag by the traffic circle. Â We sauntered over without getting hit by any cars and were quickly seated.
They had this menu item that seemed like a HUGE burger stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches, but upon recieving it, it was more like the size of a McDonald's hamburger stuffed between two massive grilled cheese sandwiches on texas toast. Â A little disappointing for the burger fan in me as I had been expecting something like at least a 1/2 lb burger from the way the menu described it. Â I had asked for hot sauce, and the response was "Is Texas Pete's okay? Â I said yes, but when it arrived in a small souffle cup, instead of texas pete hot sauce, I received buffalo style wing sauce. Â
The best part of the visit was the italian ice. Â Their lemon italian ice has schwan's beat by a long shot. Â This was almost "to die for." Â The second best part of the visit was being served the local peach flavored mead from Starrlight meadery - just a mile or two up the road from here. Â That was refreshing on a hot day after visiting the cats.
Service wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. Â Our server seemed to be a little overwhelmed as it was well after the normal lunch rush, but being a holiday weekend, people were still steadily streaming in to eat.
Considering the choices for places to eat in and around Pittsboro, this is probably worth another try.
I went to the first brunch and was disappointed. Â I had the Grilled Veg Strata; the vegs were not grilled and there was way to much bread. Â I asked for a side of sausage, which were patties and there were barely warm. They seemed to have been package, pre cooked and barely microwaved. Â
As a Roadhouse, they had a musician; Â single acoustic guitar player. Â He played in the front room and was wired for sound. Â With the amount of folks in there, he was way to loud
I will give them another chance, once they have a few brunches under their belt
We adventured out in Pittsboro after a mud run on Saturday, and I was thoroughly surprised by this area. Â Super cute! Â This place is quaint and nicely decorated, and the storefront is very welcoming. Â They've recently renovated the building, and the dining room is very open and airy. Â They have a great patio on the side too.
Our server, Jessica, was absolutely wonderful. Â She was very knowledgeable about the food and beer they sell. Â They have a few local draft brews as well as several bottled beer, and the drafts were only $4 all the time. Â They brought us fresh french bread with olive oil & a garlic clove, which was presented nicely when brought to us. Â The bread was warm & delicious, and the garlic/olive oil was tasty. Â We ordered the batter-dipped burger cooked medium, and it came out well done (I guess it was medium before they deep-fried it), so that was a bummer. Â We also ordered the big roadhose burger with grilled cheese instead of a bun, and that was quite unique. Â I must say, the food wasn't as good as it sounded, but the sriracha aioli made up for it :) Â They also had fresh pickles, which is always wins my heart.
The service was great and the food was pretty good too. Â Definitely worth checking out next time you're in Pittsboro :)
Yes, it is hard to replace the General Store, but I was surprisingly pleased. The atmosphere is still trendy and fun, but a bit nicer. I've had lunch here 3 times, and my selections were salmon on wilted spinach, roasted vegetable salad, and salmon and salad. I know I need to diversify! I loved everything. Prices for lunch averaged around $10 and the portions were perfect and served by a very friendly staff.
I looked at the dinner menu, found appealing entrees but more around the $15 plus price range. At a glance, I thought the wine menu offered some decent glasses of wine for  choices for quite reasonable prices. This makes me think it would be fun to come on a weekend and chill by the bar while they have live music in the back room.
I'm so happy that a non chain, cool restaurant found its way back into the center of Pittsboro!
The place looks great & has an enjoyable atmosphere. Service was spot on, very attentive and helpful with suggestions. Their menu is pretty diverse and offers something for everyone. I've eaten here twice for dinner and enjoyed both experiences.
Definitely worth checking out when you're in Pittsboro.
Went to dinner here this evening as part of a large birthday celebration. The restaurant has been totally refurbished and expanded under new management. The menu and wine/drink list was impressive, with a wide variety of dishes in all categories. The food was incredibly delicious and the service was without fault....Very prompt with dishes coming out in a timely way so that everyone was eating at the same time. The bartender even had blue cheese stuffed olives for martinis!!! Â Can't wait to go back...what a gem in Pittsboro, NC!!
Review Source:Four of us enjoyed a drive over to Pittsboro and sampled the Roadhouse & General Store for lunch.  It was excellent!  They've done a good job remodeling the place, the service was friendly and fast.  We had salmon, a bratwurst special, the  "Plain Jane burger, & the avocado BLT...plus shared cake. Everything was good; the place was jumping (at noon), and we'll definitely return if in the area.  All the Yelper's who've said such good things about the place were spot on!
Review Source:Real simple. I stopped going to the General Store because the service was horrible. No change. Went in, greeted quickly by hostess. Seated. Twelve minutes, never heard from a waitress, or anyone else. The place was not filled, there were empty tables. Got up and walked out. Let's be clear, the makeover looks much better than the General Store did, but the service is still the same. Never tasted the food, but I have heard it was good.
Went to Virlie's, and had a great meal, as usual!
Surprise, surprise!  A new look to large old establishment! We visit the Pittsboro area about once a month for the last 8 yrs and the restaurant we enjoy dining at has changed. It was intriguing to say the least as we sat there and observed all the great service going on around us; the great new look to the interior ( love the art deco of the receptionist desk), and a menu with a wide variety of choices.  My thought: "would the food bring us back?!?!? " That was the greatest surprise: we were served an excellent Portabella sandwich with melted blue cheese and tomato / fish taco with coleslaw as condiment and yes, fantastic chips and dill pickle.  Our drive from Fuquay Varina is always pleasant and now with the renovated eatery, can't wait to go back and choose  another great choice on their menu.  The flavors and service were super.  Remember with great food comes great customers.  We were there on a Saturday afternoon - lots of seating.
Review Source:What a great place. Â The transformation from the old restaurant to the new is astounding. Â Menu variety is great with something for everyone. Â Not a "me too" kind of place which makes it a breath of fresh air. Â People who complain about waiting to long in a restaurant that's packed full of guests the first week they are open to the public need to ask themselves why they chose to wait in the first place. Â Private owner operators who are trying to support their community who don't have corporate interests and corporate backing along with a team of corporate trainers need help and encouragement not negativity. Â With a little time and support this will be a place that people talk about all over the triangle. Â Nice job Pittsboro Roadhouse!!!!
