Mediocre. Typical for chain Mexican restaurant.  Service good portions moderate, limited to no sides, minimal appetizer menu.  Not a must have or do again.

after hearing rave reviews from other locals, the co workers & I decided to order a few enchiladas and burritos to try out.

um, disappointed in the lack of freshness.

think left over Mexican, place that in  the freezer for a few weeks, take out to defrost, microwave until warm...
    boom. there's your meal.

sadly, we were all regretting choosing this place over freakin' Chipotle!

Incredible enchiladas. I mean, I love Mexican food and Plaza Azteca did not disappoint. While it has less of a Mom & Pop feel than the places I usually frequent, it still had great service and language barriers that make Mexi night so fun. The chips were fresh and delicious.
The portions weren't as huge as I'm accustomed to seeing and the prices a bit higher, but if I'm in the Short Pump area and craving enchiladas, I'll be sprinting to Plaza Azteca to indulge. Apparently I'm not alone- it was surprisingly busy for a Sunday afternoon.

"The Chairs Weigh 2 Tons Each" Aside from that the restaurant is rather good. The service for the most part pretty good and consistent. Margaritas are decent. It gets crowded after 6:00pm on Thursday-Sunday. It's consistent and in an easy location to navigate. For the Short Pump-Mall area it's the best Mexican you can find!

I usually go to this restaurant at least once a week but after what happened yesterday they will NEVER see me again. A waiter came out of the kitchen and dropped a bowl of salsa all over the floor which then splattered all over one of the people at the table and all over her baby. The waiter them proceeded to laugh an walk away not even offering a napkin. When the manager was told about this he treated her like trash when she asked to 50% off her $7 bill since she and her baby were covered in salsa   The manager then proceeded to tell her no and that we could leave and never come back. So I will take his advice and I will never be back and hopefully none of my friends will be either after this is posted on Facebook and twitter.

I've come to accept the fact that there really are only varying degrees of mediocrity in terms of "Mexican" food in Richmond, but please enlighten me if I'm missing something.  First of all, nearly without exception, the Mexican restaurants including this one have a menu with little variation. I have found that several have menus that are virtually identical. So within the sphere of this type of food, which we call Mexican but is actually America's expectations of Mexican, it's fairly easy to compare between the restaurants - the comparison being, who prepares this style of food the best. Unfortunately, it is not Plaza Azteca.  The physical structure/facility itself is nice. It is new and probably among the most appealing looks-wise.  The staff is fine; no complaints there. The food, however, is rather bland. Upon arrival you are brought the obligatory chips and salsa. The chips are standard but the salsa is unremarkable. The food - and we've sampled many dishes with my family of 6 on several visits - is very basic. No distinguishable flavors pop out at you.  I feel like the dishes are comprised of the same flavors and ingredients put together in different shapes, sizes, and presentations. In sum, for those who simply want chips, salsa, a cold beer and something randomly "Mexican", it's fine.  At worst, the restaurant is cookie cutter. For this style of restaurant, however, there are others in the area that make the same dishes more flavorfully, including the chips and salsa, which are sort of de rigueur in my book.

I really like the design of this place. Really cool looking. The food was good and the prices were moderate. I am not picky on Mexican food but it was tasty to me. They also server you chips and salsa while you wait.

We ate dinner here tonight.  My wife had the chicken spinach enchilada and I had the spinach enchilada.  We waited more than 30 minutes for the food to come out. When it did it was very cold. We sent the food back and the waiter just grunted at us.  The manager brought it back and made some lame excuse about it being cold and that was normal. But he told us it was hot, very hot.  They did not prepare a new meal but heated the existing meal.   And the plates were hot but my food was still cold. My wife's food was hot. So I sent mine back and told the waiter to take it off the bill. More grunts. We never got an apology and the manager never came back.

I will never eat here again.

Met my wife for lunch. Rarely do I get to join my wife for lunch during the work week, so this was a special treat. The chips came out and I really liked them. They were crunchy and thick. My wife didn't like them as much as she likes chips a bit lighter.

The menu came and I was a bit disappointed. How many mexican restaurants have the same predictable combinations. Speedy Gonzales - it's everywhere. At first, I was disappointed because the menu was VERY light for lunch choices forcing you to view the full dinner menu.

I had the fish tacos. I was anxious until they arrived. I was amazed about the presentation. Presentation? When did you ever think a Mexican restaurant cared about such things? Maybe Vegas. Here, they did! It looked great. The rice was different, the beans unique, the fish tacos were fabulous. It was as if they get their wholesale products from somewhere different from EVERY other Mexican restaurant. Not only was the food good, but the portions were large.

The decor is very nice. They did a good job making the place look authentic without that festive Cinco de Mayo ambiance most places wind up with.
    Chips good.

My wife had a chicken & spinach quesadilla with a cheese enchilada. She really enjoyed the main meal and also was amazed with the presentation.

The only thing that could have been improved was the service. The service was great at times and gone at the end when we wanted to check out. They also gave us the check and thought we would just pay at the table. Took a while to find out that we had to take the check to the counter near the door.

    Definitely looking forward to returning.

I have to admit that every time I have come here, this place is very clean. The food comes fast and the service isn't bad. The mixed drinks taste a little watered down. The food is so so, but I also compare it to the more established plazas in the Hampton roads area. It seems that you pay the same here but get smaller portions. I do like the fact that they have a little more on their menu to offer than other mexican restaurants in the area.

I had dinner here last night, and was very disappointed.  The service was very poor: it took a long time to get chips, our we had to go to the drink station with our glasses to get refill, eventually had to go to the front desk to finally get our bill and get out.

The food was marginal.  I had fish tacos which turned out to be a small, thin, overcooked piece of fish-jerky with some cabbage and a small container of onions and tomatoes.  Even the tortilla had an odd flavor!

Thankfully, there are plenty of good Mexican places in the area, and I will stick with them next time.

I thought the food was pretty bad. Enchilada sauce tastes like it comes from a can, cheese is plasticky, refried beans bland. No complaints for service, but I went there for lunch at 3 on a weekend and the place was essentially empty. Below average for mainstream sit-down Mexican food

It was a rainy night, I was starving, and I had a ridiculously long day. Plaza Azteca is maybe 50 steps from the door of the Hilton over the bridge and through the side door, perfect for my laziness that evening.

The food here is pretty standard for a chain, so be sure to keep your expectations in check. Chips and salsa are complimentary and you actually get two salsas. The regular salsa has a nice flavor and packs a little kick. On the other hand, the white salsa was not my thing. I ordered the burrito with shredded pork and chipotle sauce. The pork was a little dry, but the dish overall was good. The margaritas are good and strong, a medium is quite large.

Like the food, the decor is pretty standard. They have two large rooms for seating, one is more bar-like with bar seating, high tables, and booths around the edges. The other room just has a lot of booths. They also have patio seating.

So why 4 stars, the service I had was stellar. I wanted to watch the Rangers/Ottawa playoff game, but I didn't know what channel it was on. The guys searched desperately to find the game, but couldn't find the channel. Apologetically they put on ESPN. Throughout my meal they were very attentive and checked in, but not in an obnoxious or over bearing way.

While the food maybe 3 stars, the service is an awesome 5!
