Love the Powwow. I think they may have changed owners because the staff is young and fun. Great place to stretch those Karaoke muscles.
Free popcorn to help sober you up, coffee, and a pool table. The Karaoke system has a little reverb to help you sustain those notes.
The place can be a little dead, so depends on how interactive of a crowd you want.
Ah the pow wow. I've been here too many times to say I don't like it. It's always a fun experience when I go, people are drunk and singing karaoke. Sometimes it's really packed, other times its empty with old people, it varies but it's not a place you go to and hang out all night. it's kind of a last spot to drink at before you go home. Bartenders are ehh, I've seen better. Attire is anything goes. And it's really loud so if you take someone on a date don't plan in getting to know each other, just get drunk.
Review Source:I came here on a Friday night.
Apparently its a cool karaoke spot.
Wrong.
I instantly dropped 2 stars when I walked up front to the security guard. He was being creepy by the entrance. Just looking like a big dumb retard. I was about to walk in and he looked at me like I was dumb and just motioned for my ID.
I guess when you're stupid you can't really talk.
I told him I didn't know he was security because he was in street clothes and he didn't say anything. I asked him for his uniform and he told me he left it at home. The whole time I was just trying to lighten the mood. I'm a nice guy, you know?
So in I go. I tried getting a beer at the bar and the bartender was just damn dumb. Like I didn't exist almost. It wasn't even that busy.
Tell me why the dude in a Dodgers bomber jacket, looking like he stepped off the set of Blood In Blood Out... starts belting out a 80's rock love ballad?
I karaoke at this one spot where everyone is supportive. Doesn't matter how terrible you are. Here, once you're done. No one really claps. There's like an awkward silence. Not very cool.
Couple little kids dressed like they wanted to dougie out in the parking lot also threw me off. You know the type. Playing pool, thinking its cool, post it on FB and IG to make your friends jealous.
Someone decided to celebrate their birthday here.... I wouldn't, personally. Maybe if you live in the area and are a local/have history with this place.... but there was no excuse for this girl to be in heels and a dress at this place taking shots like this was a club.
Won't be back here again. Cool name though.
I recently came here with a group for Karaoke night. Â It's located in the city of Downey, Ca. on Firestone Blvd. It's a small dive bar with a karaoke with plenty of parking. Drinks are on the cheap side serving all Budweisers are $3.00 and mixed drinks at $5.00. I use to come here when I just turned 21 and totally forgot about this place.
Really chill spot for locals to grab a drink and sing there lungs out!!
First time I ever went here I walked in, sat for less than a minute and just walked right on out. The second time I went I was accompanied by a group and although I felt the need to do the same as the first time I gave this place a shot. The only thing I like about here is that I can have a drink, but I can have that anywhere else, for cheaper too. The karaoke list sucks, and the crowd is far from youthful.
I don't see any reason to return. At least I gave it a chance.
Wow. This place is an absolute dump. Sure, the beer was cold, but that's about all the bar had going for it. I visited for the first/last time about a week ago during the evening. When myself, and the two others I was with walked up to the bar to some open seats, we found out they were apparently reserved for regulars who weren't even there yet. Really? Awesome. So we order drinks much to the dismay of my wallet. Can you say overpriced? $8 for a jagerbomb? The jager wasn't even cold! Did I mention they don't take credit card? They make you pull cash out of the atm with a $3 fee! I won't be coming back. You can keep your terrible, obnoxiously loud karaoke and party on without me!
Review Source:I have been here so many times I lost count. Definetely Love this DIVE BAR!! Karaoke every night, except Fridays I think. It's a great place and sometimes you even get some awesome singers. It's obviously NOT for everyone. If your not into the hole in the wall comfortable dive bars then it's definately not for you. Drinks are cheap and we always end up having a great time.
Review Source:Not much I can say about this place, but boring... Really small bar, one bartender and diff an older crowd. Fridays gets sum peeps, but remember this is a bar, no dancing at all. Everyone just sings sad 92.3 oldies, its kinda of deopressing lol. I want to dance on Fridays, so this wasnt the place for me.
Personally I prefer a larger, better venue than the pow wow on Fridays
Ive been to the powwow every week for the past like 2 months and I love it. The bartenders and the DJ are the best. they handle everything amazingly. yes there are fights every blue moon. Ive only seen 1 to be honest. and the drinks are fairly priced. I would recamend this bar to anyone.
Review Source:Pretty cool spot to go play pool with strangers and test your skill.. Drinks are not too expensive but usually its an older crowd that frequents here.. Lotta bbw.. =) Â karaoke is typical here and often times the singers are fairly decent.. Nice place to go to if you just wanna have a chill time and are not in the mood to party like its 1999.. free cover charge. and the pool table is cheap like 75 cents or so.. If you win you keep playing for free.. if you lose you go back in line.. though usually not too many people are trying to play pool. Used to go here to play pool but lately have been going to downey billiards which is up the street a few blocks..
Review Source:Been to the Powwow Saloon twice now, both times with a group of pals. Drinks are cheap and the karaoke is a blast. It's a simple set-up, not elaborate like other places that dedicate themselves to karaoke, but that also means less pressure on those of us who get the guts to go up and sing. I don't recall there ever being a cover charge, so for that alone, it is worth four stars, Â unlike those other places that not only charge to let you in, but also have a two drink minimum.
The crowd can be diverse and slightly questionable, but hey, it's a total dive and that's the way I like it! Remember: cash only, and it can get crowded.
Pretty decent spot for a "Dive Bar." Â I've been here a few times with friends just to chill, grab a drink, and It's all right. Â Drinks are hella cheap... and strong. Â The crowd is pretty blah... No one special. Â No one has caught my eye there... Hahaha.
The Karaoke is funny... Most of the time no one can sing there, but sometimes you'll find someone who can. Â The only thing that sucks is that the wait is about 30 mins... but on there slow nights it's much less. Â I would totally come back.
Pretty decent spot to hang out with buds. Drinks are reasonable and strong! Karaoke singers typically are terrible! Which is ok for a laugh. The crowd is a bit rough and unfriendly looking. But we didn't have any problems. There was a super drunk super buff guy outside when I went. When we went outside so my friends could smoke, the buff guy gave us a 20 minute speech on why we should do steroids and work out a lot. It was only funny for about 4 minutes though. Otherwise it was a dive and it was a dive, also it was a dive. I'd go back.
Review Source:I have lived in Downey for years and had never come to this bar. The place looks kinda shady it is right next door to a liquor store as well. I came here last night after stopping at the new BJ's in stonewood mall. It was really crowded so my friend suggested the pow wow. Â It is a dive bar with really cheap drink, $6.50 for a goose and soda . That's a deal. Also the bartender was incredibly nice. They have karaoke every night if your into that.
Review Source:This place was... interesting.
I agree with the other reviewer below "Quasi-cholos, regular working class joes, and a redneck or two".
Quite a diverse crowd. This is good spot for cheap drinks. If you come with a group of your own friends the karaoke is fun and you can take over.
The woman running the karaoke was feisty which I found hilarious.
Definitely a good local spot but I wouldn't travel from afar to go here.
Nice dive bar in Downey, with a really good mix of people. Â Quasi-cholos, regular working class joes, and a redneck or two. Â Karaoke on Saturday nights seems to pack the place around 11pm-ish. Â Cheap beers and a full bar make good for the social lubricant inspired. Â Oh and lotto, too! Â You can get all the vices covered in one shot if you show up high! Â I won a buck on hot spot!
